An interesting NRI candidate held out for a Major League contract, and he finally got one. Pedro Astacio, whom Bavasi was said to be pursuing, will compete with Chris Young, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Juan Dominguez for a rotation spot with the Rangers.
In ex-Mariner news, Dave Hansen signed a minor league contract with the Cubs, and the Brewers - trying to make Wes Helms feel better about himself - gave Jeff Cirillo an NRI.

Cirillo/Helms
Actually, Helms is so awful, I'd take Cirillo over Helms, if only for the defensive upgrade.Corco - February 4, 2005
Cirillo, Hansen, then Pedro
Give Cirillo credit for trying to regain some credibility. If bringing back Lamar Johnson won't help him, why not go ahead and return to an old team, and perhaps a more comfortable environment (though a different stadium).Wish Hansen well. He was a fun commodity to watch, even if he wasn't all that spectacular. That pinch-hit HR he nailed was quite cool, especially with the spark of hope that it gave to the season, considering we didn't get a pinch-hit extra-base-hit in 2003 until like game 160 or so. Too bad we won't have room on the bench for him. He seemed to be a good fit here.
I must admit I'm a little surprised to see Pedro get an NRI and go for less than $1 million considering the pitching market. Not surprised to see Texas as the one dishing it out. Glad to see it wasn't us, though I might've preferred Pedro to Aaron.
