Leone up, Mads down
Good for Leone, but the rest sucks. I hope Leone will start at short for now, but I highly doubt it.
Is that really the starting lineup?
One thing I don't like about Hargrove is that he never does anything. The same 9 guys every day, except Wilson got a start and Winn/Ibanez flipflopped at DH once.
options
Who, exactly, would you like to see in the lineup?  Bloomquist?  Dobbs?
Leone
Leone at short would be a good option. Willie earned a start over Valdez at short, too, I think.
Re: Leone
I don't think Willie earned a start at short by playing center field for two innings.

It'd be nice to see Leone get the start, but we all knew that wouldn't happen.

More than anything
I am glad to see Leone back in the Majors with Seattle. I honestly thought he was done after he was optioned a couple days ago. Even if he rides the Tacoma shuttle as the guy who comes up to save better players options, it's good to see him back up.
Don't get too used to him.
He'll be back on the shuttle in a few days.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to him when Pokey and Bucky are healthy. If the team goes with a five-man bench, then Leone will probably be the 26th man, ready for promotion when someone gets hurt.

Re: Is that really the starting lineup?
That's what I got from Sportsline. The Texas lineup looks right, so I'm buying it, unless MLB or Yahoo shows me something different.
MLB Gameday!
HA! It has his Tacoma line! It says he's hitting .333 with a home run and 2 walks this year....
ot: stolen A3
The ad that's currently running about the Stolen A3 is pretty clever.  It's supposed to look like someone's blog but it's actually an ad paid for by Audi.  If you do a whois on the domain the registrant is GMD Studios which touts itself as a 'new media production firm' - basically: Internet ads.

Still, as far as ads go, it's not bad.

Re: ot: stolen A3
I was trying to figure that one out myself.
Re: ot: stolen A3
It's been done before.
Bloomquist
Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I feel like if this was last year Melvin would put Bloomquist into the lineup based on his one decent night and keep him there for the next ten games.
Mariner Housewife
How long has this page been up?

I just gave it a link on the right.

MLB.TV
Nice to see the Seattle broadcast back.  Tom Grieve makes me want to swallow my own tongue.
Re: MLB.TV
What, you mean you don't want to listen to him talk about Trading Spaces anymore?
re: MLB.TV
It was nice to hear his favorite show is 24.

I should give Tom a tiny bit of credit, and I did when I originally posted my vitriol for him last not on USSM - he had a nice little bit about starting service time as late as possible to get the most value out of your players when talking about Beltre.  It's common knowledge to a BP reader, but nevertheless it's nice to hear from a TV color guy.

He still sucks, though.

re: MLB.TV
I think what got me was one of the announcers saying, "Oh, here's a graphic..." and the other guy coming back with "the viewers can read about Mike Young themselves."

It's like these guys don't even want to be on the air. Or at least, not for Rangers games.

re: MLB.TV
I'll never forget the first year I got MLB Extra Innings (the first year Time Warner in NYC had it - the second half of 2001 I think) and heard Tom Grieve's voice fo rthe first time.  I did an aural double take - "what the hell is that?  make it go away!"

I've hated the Rangers ever since.

Moyer's changeup
I think it's faster than his fastball.
re: Moyer
Fairly just made a comment about Jamie that I wonder if anyone's ever looked into.  He says that Moyer usually throws more pitches in the first inning since he's feeling out the umpire, trying to figre out exactly where the strike zone will be.

It seems unlikely to me, but I suppose it's possible.  Has anyone ever looked for any evidence to back this up (or refute it as the ramblings of a madman)?

re: Moyer
I think it's more likely that he throws a lot of pitches in the first because most starting pitchers throw more pitches in the first, before they settle into a groove. But hey, I'm not Moyer, so I couldn't tell you.

I haven't learned anything from the ump so far, for what it's worth. Inconsistent zone.

re: Moyer
Can't be any worse than last night.  Can it?
Re: Moyer
Was last night really that bad? I thought it was an incredibly enjoyable game.
re: Moyer
I miscommented, creating a new thread when I meant to reply.  I was talking about the consistency of the umpire's zone, which last night was atrocious, even if helped us with Spezio's walk.

Last night was an enjoyable, if angioplasty-inducing game.

Ahh
Very understandable. Last night's zone was inconsistent, but it contributed directly to the win, so it was highly beneficial.
re: Moyer
That wasn't too bad.
Aflac Trivia Question
Okay, so is there a history with this whole "Clyde" thing, or what?
Clyde
Just a name that Neihaus came up with.  It went something like this:

Neihaus:  I think he looks like a "Clyde".
Fairly: Clyde it is.

Re: Clyde
Heh.

It's like a bad joke that never goes away, ever.

A lot like Ron Fairly, actually...

Wilson Valdez
Does not have a good arm.
Richie Sexson
Has a good glove.

At least, he did there.

Re: Valdez
I'm impressed with his defense thus far.
re: Valdez
I'm not impressed, really, but he's been adequate.  With his bat he'd better be a plus defender.  He's gotten outs and hasn't made too many mistakes.  His range looks decent, although his arm isn't a strength, so it really doesn't matter how far to his right he can get the ball, he's not going to get a lot of outs from deep at short.

He got that one, though, well done.

Moyer
It's like Texas has never seen an offspeed pitcher before in their lives.
Moyer
I'm not complaining, although those walks are scaring me.
Gamecast blows...
I hate work.
Re: Gamecast blows...
Use MLB Gameday, if you're not already. It's faster than MLB.tv.
Re: Gamecast blows...
I'll have to check that out...
Re: Gamecast blows...
I'm surprised you weren't. It's easily the best Gamecast program on the internet.
Re: Gamecast blows...
I didn't know about it because I never have to use a gamecast program. Normally I am either A) at home or B) have a radio.

I don't EVER follow other teams in the MLB on something crappy like Gamecast.

Re: Gamecast blows...
Must be nice to be you.
Re: Gamecast blows...
All I know is that I am not you...that alone puts a smile on my face.
Re: Gamecast blows...
It's going to be a fun trip in June.
Re: Gamecast blows...
Yeah, I set up a tent on my balcony for you.

Enjoy.

Okay, Boone.
There's your token good play. Time to take the rest of the day off.
What in God's name...
Is that ad on the mainpage advertising?
Dammit, Boone.
Get a friggin' glove.
Re: Dammit, Boone.
His day was done last inning.
Nice drive Ichiro...
Machine.
Beltre
Y'know, I'm glad we have this guy around.
Re: Beltre
Me too.

Just wait until he gets comfortable and starts pulling the ball.

Beltre
He just hit a ball that was low and away, looked like a slider.

Nice to see him actually make contact on one of those.

Re: Beltre
I made a note of it.

Beltre's been doing some reading. Heh.

re: Beltre
You're changing the world.

I saw one replay, and it looked like the ball might not have been as far outside as I'd at first thought.  I think he got fooled a bit and ended up reaching for it.

Still a nice piece of hitting.

Sexson...
...that's power.
Uh, Gameday sucks.
It hangs more than Gamecast. Thanks for nothing, Jeff.
Re: Uh, Gameday sucks.
Gameday rules. Go to hell.
Surprisingly...
...this isn't the most boring game of the day.

This one is.

re: Boring
I'm enjoying watching Moyer, even if I know it doesn't bode well for things down the line.  He doesn't have much at all today and he's held a great lineup to two runs through five.
re: Boring
I wouldn't call it a great lineup; a lot of the Rangers' offensive success is a function of their home park.

Still, Moyer has been fun to watch, if only because he's even closer to the brink in games like this than usual.

I, for one, am glad that we don't have yesterday's excitement right now...

Incredible.
Sandy f'ing Alomar.
Gameday is hung for the 192nd time today...
What's going on with Blalock?
Re: Gameday is hung for the 192nd time today...
Heh...

Bottom of the inning. Valdez singled, now Reed's up with one on and two out.

Here we go...
Two outs, so what?

(I'm kidding, I'm kidding.)

Fever Pitch!
HBP, so what?

I've got Cirillo on the phone.  I'll patch him through for you.

Fever Pitch
This movie insults me as a baseball fan, a sports fan, a Nick Hornby fan, and a human being.
Re: Fever Pitch
It opened last Friday!
re: Fever Pitch
So it's been in theaters a week too long already.
Re: Fever Pitch!
The Garces?
You know it
Yep, and Astacio should have aimed higher.
Here we go!
Reed will try to bunt, then it's slugger time!
YEAH!!!!
Sucks about Soriano, but YEAH!!!!!
WOW
That looked painful on the blurry mlb.tv
ok maybe not
The replay looked a lot les spainful than I thought.  I thought he got clotheslined.
I don't know about you guys
But I'm liking Valdez.
Re: I don't know about you guys
I haven't had a problem with him. Not a long-term solution, but he hasn't embarrassed himself.

And welcome to the site.

re: Valdez
I think he's been an adequate stopgap, which is more than I thought he'd be.
re: Valdez
Plus, we share the same first name, which is nice.

I've been reading for a while, Jeff.  Congrats on the successes.

Man...
I REALLY HATE WORK.

I want to watch this.

Brocail!
Yay!  I love when pitchers that suck come in with men on base and very good hitters coming up.
Beltre
Another ball low and away that Beltre hit - only this time he hit hard.  He was all over it.
WOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO
Hitting, timely hitting!
re: hitting
Don't forget pitiful throwing from the outfield.  How pathetic was that attempt to get Sexson?
Sexson...
...that's power.
God, Boone.
Just go away.
Dear lord
Can't one of these be easy?
Ye gods.
This is all Boone's fault.
GOD DAMMIT.

Trade Boone?
Anybody ready for Boone to go away?  Anybody?
Jesus
Someone get me those girls phone numbers.
Well, this is encouraging
When I think "clutch" I think "Dan Wilson."
Re: Well, this is encouraging
What a worthless at bat.
Can we carry three catchers?
One of the worst ABs I've ever seen.
I'm home now...
Sure glad I made it time to watch Wilson strike out and now...Dobbs!
Beautiful swing, Dobbs.
Ass.
WHAT A SWEET SWING.
WHAT A PLAYER.
Bad Coaching decision
You know, if instead of pinch-hitting for Olivo, Hargrove would have just let him bat, we could have pinch hit for him now in the 9th.  Just a thought....hindsight is 20/20 though, but come on, is spezio really an upgrade over Olivo?
On the plus side
It's always fun to watch Boone trash himself.
Re: On the plus side
I'LL GIVE HIM SOME HELP
Re: On the plus side
Let's hope you swing better than Dobbs.
Hey, uh, Reed...
Stop being a pansyass and put a charge into one. One double won't cut it.
Good.
Now...Beltre...BE CLUTCH.
PLEASE BELTRE
DON'T LET IT END LIKE THIS.
hmm
It hurts to hope.

I just demoted Guardado
In MVP 2005.  Let's hope he enjoys San Antonio.
What an abortion.
What a horrible horrible game to lose. Thanks, Everyday Eddie.

Go get injured or something.

Re: What an abortion.
I think you got to fault Boone at least as much as Eddie tonight.  That was terrible.  Honestly, it made me crap my pants.  Thanks Boone.
Re: What an abortion.
Makes me even more surprised that nobody killed Buckner.  This is only the 5th game of the season and I was ready to take a bat to Boone's knee.
Re: What an abortion.
Hey maybe that way he has to field the ball with one knee on the ground, so no more balls will get on by him.
Re: What an abortion.
No. I am not going to fault Boone as much as Guardado.

Yeah, he allowed a runner on with 1 out, but he didn't give up TWO 2-run homeruns in the 9th.

He's not being paid $5m to make sure shit like that doesn't happen.

Re: What an abortion.
If boone makes that out, Blalock doesn't hit a two run homer.  That leaves us 6-4 with two outs at worst.
Re: What an abortion.
And as a pitcher, you have to adjust.

Errors happen, pitchers have to realize that fielders just aren't perfect. In no way, shape or form is this all Boone's fault. Obviously, it didn't help, but Guardado gave up two bombs. One with two outs.

Re: What an abortion.
I am not saying this is all Boone's fault, I think he shares a large part of the blame, equal to Guadardo.  Without the runner on, the whole dynamic of the inning is different.  In a three run game, with two outs and nobody on, Blalock isn't going to look yard.  With a runner on and one out, he is. Yeah Guadardo needed to adjust, so he is as at fault too. I am saying that an error in that situation was simply unacceptable and cost us the game as much as Guadardo's pitching did.   But alas, we all have different opinions, which makes Baseball such a great sport.
Well
It's good to see everyone in mid-season form around here, heh.

And boy am I glad Guardado opted for rehab instead of surgery.

It's pretty bad...
When the only dependable arm in your bullpen sucks ass.

I miss rafael soriano so much...
