Please....
Don't go all PI-blog and start a "Shotgun" thing.

I rarely visit that blog anymore, which kinda makes me sad (it was the first blog I frequented ever).

Time to get some runs!
The King demands victory!
WE?
Anyone have a WE for the game? For Felix?
I was crunching a few numbers,
But then SQL Server DTS packages came down the pike...
WEC
I believe it's .185 for the M's after Sexson's DP, might be doing it wrong though.
TY
Thank you!
Ok 57 pitches
Eh
Yikes
USSMariner is down...
Cant handle the heat
It's not *down*
but it's incredibly slow.

Thank goodness for the SportsBlogs servers.

c'mon sexy!
a 2 run blast coming up...
or a 2 out hit
August Sexson
is starting to look too much like April Sexson.
or not.
DP or HR...same difference.
on another note
Lee Mazzilli just got fired by the Orioles.
bring him to the M's
and we can have a whole gaggle of crappy ex-Oriole managers. What's the story with the O's pitching coach -- Ray, is that his name? I've heard some good stuff about him.
This whole 1..2..3.. thing.
That was just for the first inning.  Let's get some OFFENSE, guys!
I knew it, according to Rotoworld
Contrary to Tuesday's report, it looks like the Yankees may have interest in Aaron Sele after all.
If they go after him, they'll put him in the minors and see if he can pitch his way out.
Sele couldn't pitch his way out of Everett
But let the Yankees find that out the hard way if they so desire.
Don't tell them they are making mistakes.
Nothing would give me greater pleasure than watching Nomo, Leiter, and Sele pitch for the Yanks and NY finishing 3rd.
Granted
It would be so cool for us if, when the Yankees came to town later this month, Aaron Sele was on the hill for the Yanks.  OUR TURN to rip him up.
I'm coming from NY to see that series
Hopefully I will see DA KING!
WEC
Down to .157 for the M's
But it doesn't feel like it
Down 2-0 is not that big a deal.
Chart
Is anyone actually running a chart? If not I'l give it a shot to find out Felix's contribution
I'll be plotting one
when I get home this afternoon.
Felix's pickoff move
is a pickoff move in name only.
How do you guys figure out the contribution
for pitchers? Its the only thing I'm having trouble on with this thing.
Every drop in WE for the other team after an out
is a corresponding rise in WE by the pitcher, unless a fielder makes a great play.  Likewise, hits by the other team are drops in WE by the pitcher, unless a fielder commits an error.
By the same margin?
Indeed
And when the fielder makes a great grab or commits an error, they get the credit instead of the pitcher.
whose better right now at 2B?
WFB or Boone?
That was actually
a fairly heads up play by Bloomquist, the Tigers had the hit and run on. Now of course I have no idea who made the call to have Morse cover 2nd instead of Bloomquist, but still...
70 pitches
Maybe goes 5?
Depends upon how the 5th starts for him I guess.
K/9 below 9
Ahhh, he's a failure!
the naysayers were right.
let's trade him before his value goes all Spiezio on us.
There's already people at USSM
saying that he isnt ready, a failure, ect.

LOL

They also said a month ago
That Willie Ballgame would regress to the mean and go back to sucking at the plate.  Still waiting....
WFB
"Willie Ballgame"'s line for the season:

.268/.311/.333

You're free to your own opinion of what that line means, but that looks like a pretty piss-poor hitter to me, and this is supposedly his breakout year.  Yikes.

Felix's Pitch Count
Stands at 70.
Decisions
Do they pull him in the middle of an at bat against a guy if he hits 80 while doing so?

I'm thinking no, but stranger things have happened - like walk-off balks and walk-off strikeouts...

The stated number is 'around 80'
So I'm guessing either a) they pull him when he's close to 80 or b) if he gets to 80 during an AB they let him finish.
Holy Groundballs Batman
Man, he's not just a groundball pitcher, but hitters are fortunate just to get the balls off of the ground against him.
Even Dave is getting tired of Speizo
Niehaus
What did Niehaus say about him?
Neihuas:
"I can't remember the last time Spiezo had a hit to left field for crying out loud"
I like it
when Niehaus calls a player out on his suckage.
Spiezio
Finding new ways to get out every day.
For Crying out loud....
haha

Even Dave is getting pissed at Speizio.

What did Dave say?
I've got the Tigers announcers.
Dave...
When Speez hit the GB he said "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!"
SOME OFFENSE PLEASE!
If the Mariners can't score 2 runs to get felix off the hook, I'm gonna go all Milton Bradley on someone.
Substitution
Someone not named Hansen for Spiezio at DH, plz.
Dave glowing over Felix as much as we are.
The consensus, and rightfully so
is that Felix is the best starter we've had come in since Randy Johnson.
I like Felix
first inning wildness aside he's been pretty dang good.
81 pitches
Whiffing Guillen is a hell of a way to end a successful debut.
Era stands at 1.80
Thats seems about right.
Is he done?
Or does he get another inning.
When...
is the next home game for Felix? I want to be able to see him and hear Dave as well.
I <3 Felix
A VERY VERY VERY VERY acceptable debut.

#1. Most important thing: Felix now knows that he CAN get out MLB hitters.

Hell yeah
And

2) He can get out of jams at the MLB level.

Nope.
1) His arm didn't fall off.
5.0 IP 3 H 2 R 1 ER 2 BB 4 K
Very nice for a 19 year old.
good start for felix.
81 pitches -- Limited the damage, struck some good hitters out, a little wild maybe but he's not headed to the DL. I'll take it.
"A pitchout might be a good idea here"
"If that batters bunting it's small ball, if not then the managers playing for the big inning."

No I don't play too much MVP...

LOL I hate those announcers
Sit down, MEAT!
or how about
This pitcher has NUN STUFF BIG BOOOIIIIYYYY!
i do my own announcing
it was always my dream when i was really little to call hockey games. so i do the announcing when i play MVP. THose guys are awful.
Growing up...
I always used to narrate imaginary LA Kings games to myself. I wanted to be a hockey announcer real bad, although keeping track of all the names and numbers must be a bitch.

And, of course, I'm an Ottawa fan...

Back before games had annoucers
I used to do my own play by play to FPS Baseball. The game had pretty in depth stats so I could prepare some awesome reports and what not.

Nice to see I'm not the only one.

Don't worry Matt
We're all dorks on this board :)
Offense
Please erupt, I really don't want Felix to get a loss for his first time out, and for such a strong outing.
Any incentive to keep watching?
Yeah I will. I love this team too much. Mateo - keep it close else this feed is getting zapped.
My incentive is hoping the offense scores at least
2 runs so Felix doesnt get the loss.

Wow I just thought of something, can this many people really have no lives?

No life?
Technically, I'm getting paid for this.
A good nickname for Mateo:
The Vulture
  1. He looks as ugly as one
  2. He vultures wins from better pitchers, like Jeff Harris a couple days back, and if he holds up and gets run support, from Felix today.
Felix...
Pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

Now what? It's just another typical Mariners game, at this point.

I hate MLB.com!
Headline on current M's home page:
"Hernandez makes debut in MLB.TV exclusive"

Except there's no disclaimer that it's BLACKED OUT in the PNW...

Why do they...
blackout games that aren't on TV in the market? Is it a KOMO exclusivity thing or something? I just don't get it.
Conspiracy Theory
There's that whole anti-trust exemption thing, which makes them a monopoly.  Think any business in a monopoly cares about customer service?

Just wait until they start charging for Gameday...

Off topic: Olivo
hit another homerun this afternoon.
LOL
That's genius.

You show the Mariners, Olivo.

Okay.
That's a little annoying.
Note to National League pitchers:
Throw him breaking balls.Trust me it doesnt matter how bad your offspeed stuff is or where you throw, just throw it.
Yet if he was in a Mariners uniform...
he'd be 0 for 3 right now.
Detroit...
is going to put false facades on the old buildings when the superbowl is in town.

That's really pathetic.

Ugh...
The fact that Super Bowl XL will be in Detroit is a joke in itself.

But putting false facades on their buildings? Give me a break.

(Football season, it's coming! Yeeeeeeeeeah!)

Not that strange.
Ugly women usually put on a lot of makeup before they go out in public.
True...
In related news, Detroit will be the worst Super Bowl host city in history. That's right, worse than Jacksonville. Worse than Houston.

If I had my way, the Super Bowl would be in the following cities, on a rotation basis:

San Diego, New Orleans, Miami, Phoenix (Glendale; home of the new Cardinals stadium, opening in 2006)

Please don't have it in San Diego.
The traffic sucks.
Sounds similar
to the Sports Guy's proposal after having to cover it in Jacksonville last year.
Similar, yes...
Believe me, I'm not being original here. It's just common sense, that's all. Detroit hosting the Super Bowl is a joke. Just sayin'.

Oh wait, this is a BASEBALL blog. Now that Felix is out, I could care less about this game, heh.

Ibanez!
Come on M's, tie it up!!
YES!
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAULLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
Did we just score?
Why is Raul rounding the bases?

<sarcasm>

Ibanez
Nice. Very nice.
You can put it on the board...
YES!!!!
I like Raul Ibanez.
He's good at baseball.
The video quality of this game
is like a handheld cam held by a dad filming his son's little league game
If Wiki was a better catcher...
we'd be tied right now!
The Red Sox
...Have 9 runs on 3 hits.

(!)

I can't wait...
for September, when Felix could go seven, Soriano pitches the eighth, and Guardado closes it out.
Soriano
How has he been doing lately?
Shoulder setback.
His rehab was put on delay.
WE?
What's our Win Expectancy stand right now?
.32.
Or, with Spiezio at the plate, .000.
I'm sure Rizzs...
just loved Niehaus mentioning "the beloved Ernie Harwell" just then.
Holy Smokes!
I used to work here!
Morse
Good eye, kid
C'mon
Pinch hitter.

Wait.  Didn't happen.

C'mon.

Spiezio. Don't. Suck!

Didn't totally suck.
-- He made contact on a pitch.
-- It wasn't a double-play.
Why is he not bunting!?!?!
Poll
If you had a week of BP and then had 33 AB's, could you get two or more hits?

I say that I could....  Maybe.

you think a little bit of luck...
could get you 3. I mean even Dobbs has 6 hits on the year.
Why why why why why
was Spiezio hitting there?

Is he the worst player in baseball? How many times have we had to ask that about a Mariner?

Christian Guzman
Isn't he thought to be the worst now?

Spiezio I'm sure is close to that bad - isn't he?

Why didn't he bunt?
Great bunt, Sandfrog. Good work.

Good talk see you out there.

why is he...
still at the plate with Hansen on the bench? Oh wait, that's so we can save him for an unimportant appearance in the 9th with 2 outs and nobody on! He's our "closer" on the bench.
I guarrentee I could get more than 2 hits in
the major leagues.This is pathetic.
Pedro Martinez
I think he has 3 or 4 hits on the year.
This would be a neat time
for Ichiro to remember what he does for a living.
not walking ichiro
CMON. Be clutch.
Ichiro!
Don't go 0-20!
Spiezio killed The Pump
You guys (well, maybe just 3 of you, heh) want to know the reason why I stopped doing the Pump?

I was sick and tired of having to keep up with Scott Spiezio's batting average.

Okay, that's not the only reason. But that's one of the main reasons, heh.

I always figured
you just ran out of different gas stations.
OMG Ichiro
Why are you sucking?
A Nice PM Pick-Me-Up
I feel like some Ovaltine.

"The jar is round, the cup is round.  Why don't they call is Roundtine?"

Correction
is=it
Which reminds me...
This is a registration-based blog.  Why can't we edit our own comments.  That's one feature I'm building in to my home-brewed blogging app (if I ever do anything with it, that is).  It's really not that hard to program...
Not sure.
I can't even edit my comments.
I'd like to arrange one of these
http://komotv.com/stories/38367.htm

At Safeco.

Tenino!
My grandparents live in Tenino.

I haven't been up to Tenino in over two years. The joys of living in Arkansas. Yeah.

Time to start...
the Spiezio batting average drink specials. What bar did that back in the Dave Valle days?
Sluggers
Was it Sluggers?
Sluggers
I guess not.
OT: Mazilli fired
Man that's harsh.
How bout that graceful...
Mike Morse?
Oh and Morse
Nice throw. Where's Beta?
Mike Morse
He's bad at defense.
Is it just me...
or is Niehaus having a denture problem lately? It sounds like he inadvertently whistles on some of his words that end with "S".
Respect the arm baby
Whew.
Putz
It'd be great if he pitched better.
If...
...they score here, its over.
And Still...
...I continue to watch.  Interesting.
Putz...
You....

PUTZ!!!!!!

Top of the order in the 9th
and it's my lunch hour, anyway. I can't turn it off.
Ibanez
Way to work the count!

Make something happen.

Oops.
Nothing happened.
Rotoworld is already reccomending
that Felix HAS to be picked up in all leagues.
Back-to-back homers...
C'mon, I dare you...
Awesome
That was rad.
Ballgame.
Damn offense, Felix didnt deserve the loss.

I give Felix a B+ on his debut. Here's to many more healthy years to come.

Damn.
Quick reflexes.

Whatever, we saw what we wanted to see.

As seen on MLBTV
Hassey: elbows Hargrove in the side Uh, skip, wake up.

Hargrove: snoring, mumbling Ubh bhurb brubb.  Where am I?

Hassey:  Detroit, skip.  Comerica park.  You're managing the Mariners.  8th inning, Morse on at first.  Spiezio due up.  We're down by two -- you think we should pinch-hit?

Hargrove: Stay focused.  Let's get this guy.  Just throw strikes, son!

Hassey: Skip?

Hargrove: You heard me!  Er, wait.  Send in Bloomquist.

Hassey: Uh, skip.  He's up after Ichiro. 0-3 so far today, as is Ichiro.

Hargrove: Where's Boone?

Hassey: He's at home with the twins.  We traded him to Minnesota, but they gave up on him too.

Hargrove: Gets up off bench & starts walking to the mound.  Taps his right arm.

Hassey: Chases after Hargrove... Uh, skip, we can't make a pitching change.  We're up to the plate.

Hargrove:Ignores Hassey, reaches Rodney... Stay focused.  Let's get this guy.  Just throw strikes, son!

.......

2005 M's.  What a Show!

Hilarious
BAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Thanks for cheering me up Paul.
My official entry
As tomorrow's game recap.

Of course, there's got to be some reference to Felix somewhere, but that deserves (and will probably get) it's own discussion.  The rest of the game could be summarized precisely thusly.

I couldn't resist
Had to doctor the picture from the M's home page.

Here's the result

was there
a pun intended?
Just watched the replay on mlb.tv
that feed blows. Is it always that bad??
Nope.
It was only like that because the game wasn't televised anywhere. It usually picks up a Fox feed.
