Weird
That three true outcomes holds up more for relievers than starters. Function of how rested a pitcher is, perhaps?Graham MacAree - December 15, 2006
Velocity
Relievers don't have to pace themselves, so they can put max-effort into every pitch. Thus, they throw harder and with more movement.Higher velocity and more movement leads to more swings and misses, deeper counts, and in turn, more walks and strikeouts.

Cheers
Thought it'd be something along those lines. I'll take a closer look at the averages over the past few years once I relearn SQL.Graham MacAree - December 15, 2006

I didn't really know that K/9 is that high for both pitching groups.Edgar for Pres - December 16, 2006
