I know it's irrational and all
But I hate Jose Vidro more than Rene Rivera right now.
I hate that he's fat.
Eat a salad.
Won't eating a salad
Make you more fat than not eating a salad?

It's like people saying they saved money when they went shopping. It's really odd.

Well I'd rather he not fast and die.
That's needlessly mean-spirited.
If he did it -really quick-
He'd fail his physical. Still disinterested?
Hmm.
Am I the only one . . .
who thinks Jose Vidro looks a lot like Larry Flint? sorry - not really quite sure how to post pictures.

Alright....how about, "eat celery"?

Raw celery is essentially undigestible by us human folk....therefore it costs more energy to pass it through the gut than the body can retrieve from it...

Just keep the peanut butter or cream cheese off of it...

We have an unsuitable number
of fat guys on our roster.
I think the problem lies more in the talent issue
but I'm willing to concede that the team plane might need reinforced floors and a stronger engine.
That's wasted fuel
That costs this team money.  Wasted fuel and restaurant money.
Fine.
We can just reinforce the floors and leave the engines alone.

Of course, that would mean the plane wouldn't have enough power to sustain flight, but... ahh, oh well, I'm sure it would be fine.

At least it's the same now
Fruto is gone.
O HAY
that's actually a good point.
On the subject of averages
Is there any way to find this data, but split according to handedness? That is to say, the averages for a left handed batter at a certain position, or the averages for a right handed starting pitcher?
Not as far as I know.
DH = Lowest average?
Jeff, why is it the DH's have the lowest averages of all the positions. I see they have the best power numbers, so I suppose they strikeout alot, but I would imagine that the "Designated Hitter" should be batting higher then the shortstop

Oh, and poop on Vidro. Mature, eh?

I imagine Carl Everett
brought the league average down at least .080 points
Off the top of my head
it could be one of two things:

(1) one-year fluke (I'm having trouble calculating data for prior years)

(2) DH is where teams put mashers who draw walks and hit for power because those guys generally aren't real good athletes. And one of the consequences of being a guy who draws walks and hits for power is that you get deep into counts and therefore strike out a lot, dropping your average

Yeah, here we go.
The overall average strikeout rate is 17.0%. Last year's AL DH's whiffed at a 19.2% clip.
DH = Lowest average?
For what its worth, my reply would be two-fold...
 1. First, you're probably seeing random variation...
 2. Second, remember that the DH figures include numbers from both leagues (don't forget inter-league play). When just eyeballing the league breakdown for DH over the last several years, the NL  seems to bring down the DH numbers.  It makes sense I suppose considering the differences in roster formulation between the two leagues.
I didn't include the NL
for that specific reason.
I didn't include the NL
Oh....so thats what you meant by AL only....

>>>>>>slapping forehead<<<<<<<<

is it just me
or do way too many AL teams really f' up the DH slot... how often do you see just a random 4th outfielder or a 3rd baseman getting a night off or something like that

too many teams have biases against real DHs, so they're left hoping than a few nights of Frank Catalanatto mixed with whoever's getting a night off will work

See:

made Bigotsaurus look good last year.
Thanks guys
Those are some good thoughts---
I suppose that Im just longing for the days of Edgar
DH = Lowest average?
The positions are ranked by OPS below. In general, there are no mysterious surprises using OPS as the offensive metric for comparison. The defensive spectrum seems to hold...the best hitters were at the easy end of the spectrum and the worst hitters were generally at the premium defensive positions. Basically, the spread can be broken into three groups: DH/1b>>other corner positions (LF/RF/3B)>>middle positions. I'd argue that while C was higher than 2b (a break from what the defensive spectrum would predict) really, they aren't different production-wise in a practical sense (so I wouldn't make a big stink about it). So really, while the ave issue for DH is a curiosity, I wouldn't emphasize it too greatly.  Clearly the DH position has some of the best hitters overall and as we all know, AVE isn't a great metric for evaluating offensive worth anyway.

DH: .841
1B: .841
LF: .804
RF: .803
3B: .796
CF: .757
C:  .739
2B: .738
SS: .735

everyday
What ticks me off about this is that after Edgar, the Mariner brass seems to really hate the idea that the DH position can be rotated to rest people and keep some bench players sharp at the plate with some hacks.  Of course, Vidro will get his share of at-bats since Mike Hargrove doesn't use bench players anyway.

Between Soriano-for-Ramirez, this Vidro trade, and the Seahawks imploding, it's a real great time to be a sports fan in Seattle.

a Die In A Fire Update:

27 die in fire at Pakistan wedding party

By KHALID TANVEER, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 2 minutes ago

MULTAN, Pakistan - A fire erupted in a wedding tent in eastern Pakistan, triggering a stampede and the collapse of a wall that killed 27 women and children, police said Sunday. The bride was among the dead.

Mike Hargrove, it turns out, was not among them.

May they rest in peace and perhaps join the Natives underneath Safeco in haunting the Mariners.

Foiled again!
