TEAM: 81 wins +/- 8
Brief commentary: Let's pretend, for the sake of simplicity, that it'll take 90 wins to win the Wild Card. In recent years that number has been higher, but as of right now I don't see many "great" teams in the AL, so let's run with it. A team whose "true ability" is 81 wins stands a 9.1% chance of winning 90+. For an 85-win team, that jumps up to 24.2%. The lower significance threshold (5% chance) is 79 wins - by which I mean that, if you think the Mariners, as currently constructed, are a 79+ win team, then they stand a statistically significant chance of winning 90 games and therefore at least getting close to the playoffs. That's cool, and there's no better time to be optimistic than Opening Day, so I'm going to go ahead and say that the 2006 Seattle Mariners are a legitimate playoff contender.
How do the community projections look? At least as far as the offense is concerned, the starting lineup is slated to post a .788 OPS (assuming equal at bats for all nine slots). If you take a few more liberties with bench projections and the like, you end up with a team that should score somewhere around 760-800 runs, which would place it firmly in the upper third of the league. Of course, this all goes to hell if someone gets hurt or traded, but those kinds of things are nearly impossible to forecast, so we'll ignore them for now. If you insist on taking those things into consideration, feel free to bring the projection down a little bit. Meanwhile, the starting rotation has a projected 4.25 FIP in a very disappointing 861.5 innings; clearly, the community thinks that we're going to need a rather significant contribution from a sixth starter, whoever that may be. Which makes a lot of sense, given that all five members of the rotation have their own red flags.
In the end, though, these projections don't really mean much of anything - they're going to be fun to follow, but with the season beginning in six hours, we finally get to stop thinking about our expectations and start thinking about what's actually happening. And as the White Sox showed us last summer, sometimes that can turn out to be a lot more rewarding than you thought.
It's nice to have baseball back.
Go Mariners.

AHH IT's hear
Thank you for this site. I come here every day and love chatting in the GDThreads, hearing analysis, yelling about Thornton (no more!), etc. Anyway, just thought I'd throw out a little appreciation on opening day since this could be a very long season. Hopefully not and the M's do something.7 hours to go. Let's go M's! I don't want this team trying to play catch up all season.
phil333 - April 3, 2006
and in true internet fashion
I start off the season not knowing how to spell here. Yay. Go M's.phil333 - April 3, 2006
On Opening Day
you can spell what ever you want however you want, and all will be forgiven.BTW...when I was looking at the line-up, I decided to be optimistic for the season (for now). It has the potential to be a very exciting line-up. Where is the weak spot on first look?...DH. No Wilson/Olivo/Borders/Rivera/Torealba/Gonzalez, Wilson Valdez, or Brett Boone to give us pointless at bats. The bench upgrade is amazing. Starting pitching scares me a bit.
Perhaps I am overly optimistic. It is my favorite day of the year. I think I can afford myself some wishful thinking.

Officially "East Coast Mariners Fan #2"
2I have yet to get my Felix Jersey - but at least you've got some M's support in the East! Last season I got to see the Mariners for the first time at RFK and had to leave the game early for getting into a screaming match with some stupid Orioles-turned-Nats-fan who was heckling a bit too loud. Orioles fans definitely get my vote for the worst fans in baseball.
I'm hoping I have a better chance of seeing another Mariners fan in DC than I did seeing another Seahawks fan in the District - and that was during the Superbowl!
But I just purchased Mlb.tv for the season!Go M's!!

As a heads-up for the curious
For Win Expectancy purposes, I'm going to remove the subjective defensive factor. Where a year ago I gave credit to position players who I thought made outstanding plays, this year I'm going to give that to the pitcher instead, because it's too hard to determine just how good of a play it actually was. I will count errors, but I'll keep these negative contributions and the total offensive contributions separate for each player.Jeff Sullivan - April 3, 2006
Is there a way?
Is there a way to get a rough pythagorean winning percentage from our projections?btw, I would like to point out that last year the White Sox won 98 games, yet their pythagorean wins had them only winning 91 games. What kind of chance is there for a team to win 7 more games than its pythagorean win percentage?
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 3, 2006
Re: Is there a way?
Any pythagorean record based on our community projections would require a ton of assumptions (people not projected, playing time, etc.), but I can say with certain confidence that because of the way our offense looks, the projections have the M's finishing above .500, if only by a little bit.As for the second thing, I don't really know how to answer that, since there's a ton of debate over what over/underperforming one's pythagorean record actually means. I can tell you that a team whose "true ability" is 91 wins stands a 15.3% chance of winning 98+, for what it's worth, but that doesn't really answer your question.
Jeff Sullivan - April 3, 2006

When I worked in Hartford, the three guys to the left of me had Yankee-fied cubicles, including the one guy whose entire workspace was a shrine to Paul O'Neill. There were a ton of Red Sox cubes as well, and in the middle of all that Northeasty baseball, there was my little Mariners cube, complete with Kingdome pennant and Ken Griffey Jr. poster from '96.It was a lonely life, but that was 2001, so it was great until October. At least I got to coast on the 2001 goodness for most of '02 out there...I used to live around the corner from the Half Door, and I'm sure they got sick of me insisting that they turn off YES for a while so that people could watch non-pinstriped baseball...good times.

BTW, I stepped outside during the USSM feed yesterday at Safeco Field, and saw two twentysomething, very happy and enthusiastic diehard Mariner fans camped outside the home plate gates waiting for opening day. They had hung two paper signs on the gate. One said "We (Heart) Niehaus" and the other said "Go Mariners! 172-0!" Heh.
