28-34

The funny thing about following a team like Seattle is that, where a little hot streak can get you excited and put you in a good mood for a few days, the losses don't really sting, because you're never expecting the success to last very long. Particularly the losses against arguably the best pitcher in baseball. I shouldn't think any of us will ever be accused of overconfidence. The Mariners are just good enough to keep you from becoming a bitter, irascible malcontent, but just bad enough to keep you honest. I'd call it a happy medium.

Biggest Contribution: Raul Ibanez, +12.1%
Biggest Suckfest: Joel Pineiro, -29.2%
Most Important Hit: Ibanez single, +9.5%
Most Important Pitch: Castro double, -10.9%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -30.7%
Total Contribution by Hitters: -27.1%

(What is this?)

The day game took place while I was at work, and whenever I try to watch the archived footage I find myself wondering when Joel decided to go from the well-cultivated chin tickler to the full-on face carpet rather than paying attention to the game itself, so in lieu of trying to write a recap about stuff I didn't see I decided to plug the entire active roster into MyHeritage.com's face recognition program instead. The name on the left is the Mariner, and the name on the right is his closest celebrity look-alike as determined by the software:

Adrian Beltre: Pedro Martinez
Yuniesky Betancourt: Eminem
Willie Ballgame: John Wyndham
Carl Everett: ...Pedro Martinez
Felix Hernandez: Forest Whitaker
Emiliano Fruto: Juan Pablo Montoya
Eddie Guardado: Juan Pablo Montoya?
Raul Ibanez: Mark Webber
Ichiro: Ichiro (I guess that's appropriate)
Kenji Johjima: Hideki Matsui
Jose Lopez: Arvydas Sabonis
Julio Mateo: Toshiro Mifune
Gil Meche: Robert Zemeckis
Mike Morse: Shaquille O'Neal
Jamie Moyer: Sergio Vieira de Mello
Roberto Petagine: Condoleezza Rice
Joel Pineiro: Olusegun Obasanjo
JJ Putz: Burt Reynolds
Jeremy Reed: Cristiano Ronaldo
Rene Rivera: Sonny Rollins
Richie Sexson: Michael Schumacher
George Sherrill: Ron Howard
Rafael Soriano: Tim Montgomery
Jarrod Washburn: Gary Oldman
Jake Woods: Matt LeBlanc

To answer your questions, no, the software doesn't work very well, and yes, it's free. I think those two facts are related. Of course, by about the second comparison I realized that the hats all the players have on in their profile portraits throw everything off, but by that point I was already committed to the idea, so I had to run with it anyway. On the plus side, the whole Yuniesky Betancourt/Eminem thing just made my Friday that much better. For what it's worth, I always thought that the goateed version of Joel Pineiro bore a striking resemblance to Prince, but I'm afraid that particular Joel is gone forever, and so is his arm. But then, when he puts this much stress on his shoulder every time he throws a pitch, I guess we shouldn't be too surprised.

On the off chance that you were actually paying attention to the game today, let's hear what you thought. Otherwise, Washburn/Escobar tomorrow at 7:05pm PDT.

Oh well
That game was no big surprise.

Last day of exams, then I'm free to watch baseball for the next 4 months (woo).

I would of considered it a minor miracle if we had
completed the sweep today as it was. But yeah generally go into a Santana start expecting to lose.I mean hell he had an off day, and still throttled us.

That being said a few notes.Ibanez is starting to catch fire, as is Sexson. And that can only mean good things. Jose is starting to settle into a slump.Hopefully it doesn't last long.

Oh and add Yubet to the fire list.At this rate he'll be hitting .300/.320/.430 in a week.Which would be spectacular.

Oh and one more thing
NO MORE JOE MAUER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good god, I fear him more than any other hitter when he's facing the Mariners now.Even more than Vlad. That guy is fucking insane against us.This is how teams in the NL must feel when the have to face an entire series against Albert Pujols.

Santana was lousy
It seemed like the Mariners has baserunners every inning. Pineiro was just much worse.
Sorry
I didn't watch the game, but did Johjima make a bad play or something?  What's the pick for???
That's Rivera
He had two pass balls.
oh...
I thought Rivera's D was pretty bad a while ago when he played.  Is this just the lack of playing time, or...?

I thought he was a good defensive catcher with no offensive skills?

He was always a terrible hitter
so he automatically developed the reputation as being solid defensively.
Fun with Numbers...
Ichiro and Mauer this series:

.679/.710/.964/1.674

I've never seen 2 players play so well in the same series.

Ichiro...
30 for his last 54 (.556).
good lord
Another way to put it:
Ichiro is a career .334 hitter.

The odds of a .334 hitter going 30-54 (or better) are 0.000669133116943943. In other words, there's a 0.067% chance that Ichiro is about to begin such a stretch over any given 54-AB period.

That probably doesn't sound as impressive as it is.

And he was the weak performer of the two
My face recognition match
Tom Stoppard... however, a very close 2nd: Kim Jong-Il.

The photo I used cut off the top of my hair.  I'm sure the Illmatic would've been first had I used a complete headshot :(

LOL
Now I have to watch Team America again.

Me: "That's not Kim Jong-Il! That's Gomez!"

Texas loses
I'd like to see a WE% for the game... losing a 10-1 lead...
I'm sure it's similar to
the game when Cleveland came back on the M's in 2001.
Re: Texas loses

(Source = Fangraphs)

Great game
by Zack Greinke's Home and Garden Magazine Brother... notice Sr. DeJesus' name all over that graph.
Could someone explain the Home and Garden joke?
I've seen it mentioned several times now and still have no idea what it's about :-)

Ta.

It's in reference
to comments Zack Greinke made in a weird ass interview I found.  He mentions trading Home and Garden magazines with David DeJesus.
My embarassing matches
With one picture it was Jennifer Jason Leigh and another it was Wesley Clark.
Is it me, or is this boring
I don't know about the rest of you, but I am pretty bored by this team right now.  The draft is over, and there is still another month to six weeks before the serious trade rumors start.

Meanwhile, the M's are heading into the interleague schedule interspersed with a lot of games against the Angels.  It seems like everything might be uphill for the M's, as they will play a lot of games against NL West clubs that are suddely pretty good.

Am I the only one who is bored as hell?

I am just looking forward to seeing roster moves in the next month.  Wins against the Royal and Twins just don't mean much.  I am looking forward to:

-Dan Rohn's debut as the M's skipper

-The triumphant return of Doyle

-the interview after Carl Everett gets DFA'd.

-veteran for prospect trades in late July

-PT for guys like Livingston, Cruceta, Baek, and Petagine

-September appearances by Adam Jones, Travis Blackley, Jeff Clement, and....the guy you would least expect to see in Safeco.....Michael Garciaparra!

-Ichiro making people talk about the possibility of .400 again.

I hate to sound like the eternal pessimist, but this season just seems like a boring preface to 2007.

Until we get double-digit games back...
in the pennant race, none of that's gonna happen, except maybe (and I stress MAYBE), Dan Rohn taking over for Hargrove. Unless they fall 10+ games back by the deadline, I expect none of that to happen.
I also hate to say this, but...
I am torn right now, because the M's are still in it late in the season.  But I actually hope that they do fall back a bit.

An ill-advised playoff run could be the worst thing for the M's.  The team is not a legit contender, and their position in the pennant race has everything to do with the entire AL West sucking.  The M's need to keep retooling.  I like the fact that they are a better team this year, but would hate to see them jepordize the future to make a playoff run.

Yeah know what would be fucking crazy?
Let's say we end up with 82 wins this year(not out of the question) and end up winning the division by like 2 games or something because this division blows.

What if get just happen to go on a hot streak in the playoffs and proceed to win the world series? That would be awesome, hilarious, and fucked up at the same thing.
