It's bringing in fucking Mateo in that situation. Even Fruto has a better chance of gettting out of that jam because he is capable of striking people out.
..before he got hurt he was featuring a 94mph fastball with lots of movement and posting a 7 K/9. Couple that with good control and a less then 2 BB/9 and you had a successful long relief pitcher.
Now? Hell he's barely posting a 5 K/9. He's useless without being able to miss bats.
Dave Cameron thinks it's a good thing to win now and rebuild the fanbase, as long as we don't do any stupid moves like Asdrubal Cabrera for Eddie Perez.
My counter arguement is that winning now would only force us to make stupid moves like Asdrubal Cabrera for Eddie Perez. I would rather maintain our ability to win with what we got and keep our depth (as Dave was advocating). But if that means not being in playoff contention, so be it.
I'd rather have a strong showing this year, pick up what we need in the offseason, and start fresh next season primed to take the division. This half assed contention thing because the division is weak is not a good idea.
Now what we've got to worry about is we have the same sorry team, the same sorry manager, and one less bargaining chip to offer the next time a real opportunity presents itself.
ought to do it. As fans we were all ready to believe that the Mariners had finally put things together, and now they'd be a good team. A bad stretch would expose that for the wishful thinking it now seems to be.
Barring a late-inning rally, we've now lost four of five. This could be that losing streak right here.
Oh, and is this where I get to say that I miss Jeff Harris? The horrible thing is that if he hadn't been sent to Tacoma to make room for Matt Lawton (another fine move), he wouldn't be hurt and would still be contributing.
was simply the victim of a numbers game at the start of the season, then the victim of a cheap and cowardly shot that caused him to be hurt. Jeff is probably hurt more by the perception that, because of his age, he is easy to move around with a low risk of being picked up by someone else. I think the M's are hiding him on the DL now.
I truly believe that if he wasn't hurt, he would have been the guy called up the first time Nageotte came up (remember those 3 hours?), and that would have stopped all of this foolishness of shuttling guys (Nags, Livingston, Fruto, Green) back and forth from Tacoma to Seattle. Jeff would have done the job and that would have put an end to it. If Jeff Harris was not hurt, I believe that Pineiro would be in the bullpen permanently (or traded). He is keeping his job simply because the M's don't have a solution (and maybe because Bavasi reminded Hargrove that if he takes Pineiro out of the rotation, he'll never be able to unload him).
If he isn't the dumbest manager in baseball history, then you may want to investigate if he is betting against his own club. Today's game looks to be shaping up to be the 2nd game in the last 3 that he has personally given away.
I'm sure I'm not the first, nor the last to tell you this: you need to take a long, hard look at how detrimental he is to the Mariners success.
At least then if he ever did make contact there would be a chance that he could pull a Sosa, and the M's would be forced to replace him in the lineup for the length of suspension.
Maybe we could all start corking bats and sending them to him....
But I guess this game debunks the Woods or Soriano to rotation rumors... But Grover also refused to state in the post game whether or not Pineiro was still in the rotation yesterday...maybe Cruceta or -sigh- Baek? Anyone but Pineiro, please.
And I only point this out because Dave Cameron over at USSM was hyper about our team because we were posting such a high run differential. Nevermind the fact that we hadn't been posting that all year, just as recent as a surging hot June.
