7/4: Open Game Thread, Part 2

Mike Hargrove and Julio Mateo ought to play soccer on a wet tile floor.

I can't believe fucking Mateo is still in.
How does this happen? In a close game even!
because
Hargrove is stupider than a retarded monkey.
Shoot me now
ugh.
This is hysterical.
Did anyone NOT see this coming?

Pennant race over.

Told you
Once the M's started playing AL teams... back to reality.
Thank God.
That was the most hilariously awful thing I've ever seen.
It's not Hargrove's fault?
My ass it isn't Physioc. Mateo sucks balls.
Mateo sucks
but when he sucks, you lift him, not allow him to get pounded.
What'd that ass-clown say!?!?!
He said
it's not Hargrove's fault that he went to the bullpen because the pen had such a good ERA the last month.
There is nothing wrong with going to the bullpen
there.

It's bringing in fucking Mateo in that situation. Even Fruto has a better chance of gettting out of that jam because he is capable of striking people out.

At least we have Eduardo Perez!
Yep, glad to see Hargrove made sure
that all Bavasi traded for was a cheerleader.
I'd like to remind everyone
that Julio Mateo is one of the most extreme flyball pitchers in the history of baseball, and he never strikes anyone out.
He used to...
..before he got hurt he was featuring a 94mph fastball with lots of movement and posting a 7 K/9.  Couple that with good control and a less then 2 BB/9 and you had a successful long relief pitcher.

Now?  Hell he's barely posting a 5 K/9.  He's useless without being able to miss bats.

Mike Hargrove
Good job of putting in the worst possible reliever in the worst possible situation.

YOU SUCK.

It turns faster when your manager is retard
shut up Hendu

Wacky, nothing...

I figure Hargrove has cost us at least 5 games so
far. I WANT TO CONTRIBUTE to a hit team.
On the plus side
at least none of us live in Anaheim.
I thought Hendu was gonna go on another romp
on how National Leaguers were a bunch of incestous pussies.
Lopez K's
Who cares? We can't win with Mike Hargrove at the helm.
Remember when Raul and Richie homered?
Yeah, dude.
Ibanez
isn't going to the All-Star team. It's just not going to happen.
And Vlad is
with his comically inferior batting line.
In Vlad's defense..
It's not his fault he's going to the All Star Game.
Oh, I know.
I just think it's funny that Raul has been a better player than the consensus "Best RF In Baseball."
And of course...
These are the same moron AL fans who voted in Robinson Cano and Mark Loretta over Jose Lopez.
Well
Brian Roberts probably deserves it more than Lopez.
I never said I agreed with it.
Ibanez
Way to show patience on borderline pitches and then get fooled by a breaking ball 3 feet inside.
So the fans start to pack Safeco again
because the Mariners came home a winning team.

Now they've taken a big crap at home.

So how long before the stadium is empty again?

It'll be a quick response.
The people who came back won't need much convincing that the team still blows.
Worse...
Dave Cameron thinks it's a good thing to win now and rebuild the fanbase, as long as we don't do any stupid moves like Asdrubal Cabrera for Eddie Perez.

My counter arguement is that winning now would only force us to make stupid moves like Asdrubal Cabrera for Eddie Perez.  I would rather maintain our ability to win with what we got and keep our depth (as Dave was advocating).  But if that means not being in playoff contention, so be it.

I'd rather have a strong showing this year, pick up what we need in the offseason, and start fresh next season primed to take the division.  This half assed contention thing because the division is weak is not a good idea.

You're completely right.
But it's hard to think that way when your team is winning for the first time in three years.

Fortunately we don't have to worry about that anymore.

Right.
Now what we've got to worry about is we have the same sorry team, the same sorry manager, and one less bargaining chip to offer the next time a real opportunity presents itself.
I figure one more losing streak
ought to do it. As fans we were all ready to believe that the Mariners had finally put things together, and now they'd be a good team. A bad stretch would expose that for the wishful thinking it now seems to be.

Barring a late-inning rally, we've now lost four of five. This could be that losing streak right here.

TV off
I don't think
I've heard Safeco fans boo more in a season than in this season.
OMG!
A better pitcher than Mateo!
When we come back and win this game
...wait, I forgot what I was saying.
I'm glad Hargrove
made Julio Mateo our goto guy in a critical situation............
Julio Mateo
has been our go-to guy in every situation every fucking day.

Hargrove won't let Putz throw more than 16 pitches but he's uses Mateo in 5 or 6 consecutive fucking games.

I forgave him for a while since Soriano was injured, but he's healthy now and there's no reason not to use Soriano.

Hearing the PA guy announce Mateo's line
over the stadium speaker system makes me break things.
Don't mind me...
I'm just doing my patriotic duty.

Doing a Little Holiday Laundry?
I love the towel. I wish it had a matching "Bavasi Throwing Out Hargrove" companion set.
A Needed Diversion
In honor of Carl Everett leading off the next inning, I offer the following link:

Oh, and is this where I get to say that I miss Jeff Harris? The horrible thing is that if he hadn't been sent to Tacoma to make room for Matt Lawton (another fine move), he wouldn't be hurt and would still be contributing.

Jeff Harris
I agree with you, KVA, I miss Jeff Harris too and wish he'd never been sent down and got injured. I hope he comes  up north soon.
Does anyone else fear
that Harris is getting the blackball treatment because he's a Mike Marshall disciple?
Jeff Harris
was simply the victim of a numbers game at the start of the season, then the victim of a cheap and cowardly shot that caused him to be hurt. Jeff is probably hurt more by the perception that, because of his age, he is easy to move around with a low risk of being picked up by someone else. I think the M's are hiding him on the DL now.

I truly believe that if he wasn't hurt, he would have been the guy called up the first time Nageotte came up (remember those 3 hours?), and that would have stopped all of this foolishness of shuttling guys (Nags, Livingston, Fruto, Green) back and forth from Tacoma to Seattle. Jeff would have done the job and that would have put an end to it. If Jeff Harris was not hurt, I believe that Pineiro would be in the bullpen permanently (or traded). He is keeping his job simply because the M's don't have a solution (and maybe because Bavasi reminded Hargrove that if he takes Pineiro out of the rotation, he'll never be able to unload him).

This club will not compete
until they get a competent manager
In retrospect
The Perez trade looks horrible. He only plays against lefties or if we go into extra innings and there is no player left on the bench but him.
Our club lacked a right handed Petagine
We lack a left-handed Petagine.
We Lack
Somebody wearing a #21 who can actually contribute to the team winning.
Game over.
And that did it.
I was gonna wait till the game was over to go to the BBQ, but fuck this noise.

I'm outta here.

Jake Woods is so awesome.
I can't imagine where we'd be without him.
Great
Nice to see us resuscitating the Angels' season. Real neighborly of us.
that was fucking luck
who cares
So this is how the M's/Angels thing works
The shitty one always dominates the decent one.
Cuban throwing out a fellow Cuban.
Watching this game is like picking at a scab.
Or biting down on a cavity.

Any other similes present themselves?

Spooning with Eddie Guardado.
Living in Anaheim.
Or of course
Spooning with Eddie in Anaheim and biting down on his scab.

Ok, I think I'm gonna be sick.

Wonder how long it takes for the Angels
to pass us and move into 3rd in the division.
for all the good it'll do
here's the email I just sent to front office:

Sub: Hargrove is a joke

If he isn't the dumbest manager in baseball history, then you may want to investigate if he is betting against his own club.  Today's game looks to be shaping up to be the 2nd game in the last 3 that he has personally given away.

I'm sure I'm not the first, nor the last to tell you this:  you need to take a long, hard look at how detrimental he is to the Mariners success.

A concerned fan

Let's set up an internet petition.
Never underestimate the awesome power of an internet petition.
Green ties
Not a good sartorial choice.

"Friends for Mike McGavin" -- whose friends are these? Are these the Super Friends? If not, why should I care that they're friends?

Man
I never anticipated Carl being this bad.
Why did Everett turn around to bat right-handed?
Just to prove that he can suck from both sides? Or did Gameday make a mistake?
I don't know.
I wasn't watching.
He should try a lighter bat
His was designed to be wielded by a sasquatch.
Maybe one full of cork
At least then if he ever did make contact there would be a chance that he could pull a Sosa, and the M's would be forced to replace him in the lineup for the length of suspension.

Maybe we could all start corking bats and sending them to him....

Hit a 7 run home run Choo!
You know what I love?
Things that aren't baseball-related.
Like puppies.
My mother just got a golden retriever puppy. She sent me a picture this morning. It's a tiny little bundle of awesomeness.
Can it pitch relief?
Couldn't hurt.

(wink emoticon)

It relieves itself all the time
or so my mother tells me.

I'm with you -- it can't hurt. Bring it out every day or two so it can take a dump on the mound, just like Mateo.

Teach it
to shit little donut-shaped turds. Then send Eddie out to the mound after.
Why would he want a doughnut?
Doughnuts are a scam!  When you get to the middle, where the "doughnut fillet" should be... YOU GET A HOLE!  I DON'T WANT A HOLE!
Soriano warming up.
How delightfully wasteful.
Great! Soriano will save us!
Must escape the mercy rule.
1-2-3 inning!
Eighth inning mojo!
I want to believe Moyer will win tomorrow
but chances are that Mateo will come in during the 7th and blow the game.
If you're really insane
you could make the argument that, if an offense as terrible as Anaheim's can put up a seven-run inning, so can ours.
Just to point out...
Our run differential has dropped from 30 down to 16 after this ballgame.
Yea
We just gotta figure out which one of their pitchers is like Mateo.
Angels announcers
still whining about that play at 1st.

YOU HAVE A SIX RUN LEAD YOU IDIOTS!

Saturday night
I was really, really pumped about this team.
A run!
Cue dumbass crowd applause!
Hargrove
really did a massive amount of damage to our team Sunday afternoon.
Soriano!?
What the hell?  What's the friggin' point?
Soriano?
This game makes me feel stupid.
Raffy in to slam the door!
If he throws
a (-5) run inning, we're right back in this thing!
Soriano!
Thank God he's still alive.
Niehaus on the radio as the inning ended:
"Three up and... I beg your pardon. One run..."
This team will go back to dominating
right after the All-Star break.  Now, we just need to survive and hopefully maintain .500.
And your reasoning is?
I'd like to agree with you, I just need some convincing.
Nice route, candyass.
Wow, that is one fat woman in the stands.
Between her thighs and her mullet, she took up half the screen.
Anyone got a radar reading on Soriano?
Well, they're not hitting him hard...
But I guess this game debunks the Woods or Soriano to rotation rumors...  But Grover also refused to state in the post game whether or not Pineiro was still in the rotation yesterday...maybe Cruceta or -sigh- Baek?  Anyone but Pineiro, please.
Awesome!
Riverowned.
Embarrassing.
Well, Ichiro could've caught that if he was
shifted to right...

Still not a good sign.

I feel sorry for Moyer right now
Going 9.0 innings tomorrow is almost mandatory.
Is it my imagination, or is Soriano homer-prone?
Not just you.
That's 5 this year.  He had three in May, I believe.  All within a week, if I recall correctly.
He's fly ball-prone.
For those watching
is Raffy's speed down? He doesn't seem to be himself.
It looks like he's lobbing it up there.
But MLB.tv won't show me any graphics, so I can't say.
I saw 93 at least once.
Hos body English is terrible.
Looks like he doesn't want to be out there. I haven't seen a radar gun reading, though.
I know what you mean.
The first thing I noticed when he came in was how disinterested he looks. There's a guy who's ready for the ASB.
In a way I don't blame him.
Pitching garbage innings with his talent? I'd be a little pissed, too.

Still, he's being paid more than enough to act like a professional.

Raffy
He's throwing 93-94 mph.
93, 94 on last two pitches.
*sigh*
I got here late, and now I'm sorry I came.
Run differential...
Down to 14.

And I only point this out because Dave Cameron over at USSM was hyper about our team because we were posting such a high run differential.  Nevermind the fact that we hadn't been posting that all year, just as recent as a surging hot June.

Well
+14 is still the best in the division.
Yes but...
The point is that it wasn't sustainable.  I don't know what in anybody's mind thought we had the talent capable of posting a +30 run differential.  We don't have Oakland's pitching to sustain the divison lead with a negative run diff and we don't have Texas' offense to keep their run diff on the positive side despite their pitching.

There are some things we can do to improve this club without going out and getting Eddie Perez or any other Rent-a-Player.  I just hope Bavasi realizes this and digs out the cancers (Guardado, Mateo, Everett, Hargrove) and replaces them with our own replacement level talent.

Christ, they can't do any worse.  WHERE'S MY DOYLE?!

Hargrove's Strategy:
Now I understand. Hargrove plans to make their hitters tired from running around the bases so much today. Tomorrow they'll be worn out.

Fire Mike Hargrove, or Set Hargrove on Fire, or something

Force-feed Hargrove Mentos and Diet Coke
His face would look like Mateo's.
How Appropriate
that Sexson and Everett could be the last two outs of this game?
"Optomist"
Someone who thought Richie Sexson had a chance there when he got up 3-0.
Perez sighting!
WHOA!
Perez gets to lefty-mash in BLOWOUTS! Now I get it!
Eduardo Perez
Perfect timing.
Perez on deck!
America! Fuck yeah!
Hey
It's Perez.
Remember Petagine's first AB?
Home run.

Remember how much he's played since?

Eduardo Perez is fucked no matter what he does.

OK, it's Perez time!
Which is to say, this is the last time we'll see him for a month.
Fun game.
Fuck Britain.
Perez
Wants to go back to Cleveland.
No Way
In Cleveland he was rotting on the bench, a platoon player who rarely got into games when it mattered. No opportunity to contribute to....

Never mind. You're right.

Our pitching is toast
Oakland/Detroit
still knotted at 1-1, bottom of the 7th
Hargrove and his smart bullpen management
go to hell Hargrove.

14-6???  What a waste.

Hargrove probably isn't going any where, but I hate him.

I'm not sure if I want to follow this team with this clown of a manager...

Ahh...  This sucks.

Fun from yesterday
That dude
Make him manager.
Oakland wins
in the 10th
