I have to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to catch my flight to Seattle. So, naturally, JJ Putz decided to go and make sure this didn't end on time. But dear sweet Christ, sticking around was so so worth it. From a dramatic win over our biggest rivals in a game that felt lost so many times to Adam Jones' promotion, I can't remember the last time Mariner fans had reason to be so God damn happy.
Felix, you rocked tonight. Brandon Morrow, you did too. Yuniesky Betancourt, you rocked more. Jose Lopez, you didn't. And Jason Ellison, while I know this whole situation sucks, know that we'll always appreciate what you did while you were here. Never before has a backup outfielder meant so much to the future of a franchise, and I hope you're able to find a good home for yourself.
I'm going to go to bed so I can make this flight without being too much of a wreck. I'll see some of you guys tomorrow night in Tacoma at the first of our LL/USSM get-togethers. I'll be the tall guy with the shit-eating grin.

ThundaPC - August 2, 2007
Hard to find stat.
Best I can come up with is this http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/newsstand/discussion/post_gazette_smizik4/The Pirates, since 2001, are 377-21 when leading after 8. I don't think they have been noted as having a good bullpen, starting pitching, offense, defense, or ownership in that time period.

Teams don't usually lose once they have a lead in the later innings. Sure, bad bullpens blow games, but usually, teams hang on for the win.Gomez - August 2, 2007

From Baker's blog
Tired of players spouting the party line, as so many of them did after the Mariners stood still at the trade deadline? Well, here's a non party-line quote from Jose Guillen, who pulled me aside and told me he's absolutely "pissed off'' about the Jones promotion."I just hope they understand this isn't Triple-A,'' he told me. "This is the big leagues.''
"This is a totally different league,'' he continued. "I understand he's a good prospect and he's ready. But this team has been good. I just completely don't understand that move right there.''
Robert - August 2, 2007
9 infield hits
4 by the Angels, including an infield double, and 5 by the Mariners. Weirdest game ever. Also, someone needs to tell Lopez that he fell into a time vortex and that it is perpetually April.Incidentally, if you dare to venture into HH, you'll see that now tit is being said that JJ is a bad closer, and in support of this he states the belief that the All Star Game matters. Good stuff.
Rollo Tomasi - August 2, 2007
We all know Rev's an idiot
Panther, bitch.TIF @ Lookout Landing - August 2, 2007
Jose Guillen is a dumbass.
Notwithstanding Guillen's impressive statline against left-handed pitchers (.396/1.147) and cannon of an arm, the guy has terrible range in right field (Zone Rating: .792) and is well-known as a petulant malcontent throughout Major League Baseball. As it is, I wouldn't be against Guillen being placed on waivers with the objective of letting another team claim him for free. With Wladimir Balentien currently tearing it up with the Tacoma Rainiers, Guillen would probably be better served as a designated hitter for a mediocre team (e.g., the Minnesota Twins) than he would be staying here.
Of course, I'm the same guy who wants Richie Sexson to be immediately waived with the irrational hope that the New York Yankees might claim him; thus, my ideas should be taken with a grain of salt.
AK1984 - August 2, 2007
You've been dissing Guillen for a while.
An ~.800 OPS by a righthanded hitter in Safeco Field is quite welcome. His defense is better than Raul's, and left field in Safeco is bigger than right field, so putting Jones in left makes a lot more sense. As for being a petulant malcontent, how has this negatively affected our team?
Rollo Tomasi - August 2, 2007
Truthfully, I agree with you.
Unlike Raul Ibañez, Jose Guillen isn't an over-the-hill has-been whose best days are behind him. Nonetheless, I'm still heavily perturbed by Guillen's ill-tempered surliness toward Adam Jones' well-earned promotion. In any event, though, the Seattle Mariners would be best served with Wladimir Balentien in right field, Adam Jones in left field, and a platoon of Guillen and Ibañez at designated hitter -- with Jose Vidro being used as a pinch hitter -- however, that scenario will probably never come to fruition.
AK1984 - August 2, 2007
As I said in the diary
I'm not too concerned about Guillen's statements because I'm relatively sure he'll sing a different tune when Jones starts contributing to the team in positive ways. However, it is August now. We all wanted Jones up a month ago (or earlier) so his impact on the team would be bigger. At this point, he's going to get into about 50 games, probably only about 175 at bats, and only about 400 innings of defense. And that's assuming that McLaren actually plays him.
If Jones ends up getting the Ellison treatment, then there really was no reason to promote him.
TIF @ Lookout Landing - August 2, 2007
No one falls for the...
"We'll pull him if you claim him" trick anymore, ever since some team put in a claim for someone and ended up with the check AND package.IcebreakerX - August 2, 2007
Kevin Towers once made a huge mistake.
As is noted within the following article, the San Diego Padres carelessly claimed Randy Myers off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/news/1998/08/06/myers_padres_update/
Inarguably, that precedent makes it highly unlikely that an overpaid, underperforming hack like Richie Sexson would be claimed off of waivers.
AK1984 - August 2, 2007

Now that the Nats signed Young, what do you guys think of Nick Johnson. He fills the same role as Broussard but we could use another LHB and he actually walks.Edgar for Pres - August 2, 2007
I usually feel bad about
cutting and pasting sections but screw ESPN and I don't want to make you guys read it all. Its about the Mariners at the deadline:There's no team we feel sorrier for than the Mariners. As a scout from another club put it, "They had more scouts out there seeing pitchers than most teams have out for World Series coverage." Name one pitcher whose name you heard in any rumor, and the Mariners either checked him out or made a serious bid on him. One GM nominated them as The Team That Was Most Likely to Have Traded for Mark Buehrle. But Buehrle foiled that plan by re-signing with the White Sox. Next on Seattle's starting pitchers list were Jon Garland and Matt Morris. But Garland turned out to be unaffordable, and Morris pitched so badly, he plummeted right off the radar screen of everyone but the Pirates. Last up: The Mariners hung in to the end on Dotel and on Tampa Bay's Al Reyes. But they wound up with none of the above. So can they stay with the Angels with their current staff? "It all depends on [just-reactivated] Mark Lowe and on Horacio Ramirez staying healthy in the rotation," one scout said. "They don't have a lot of room for error."
Edgar for Pres - August 2, 2007

Thingray - August 2, 2007
hmmm
"Horacio Ramirez staying healthy in the rotation,"ESPN seems to be off again, how is Ho's health important?? If he gets hurt Baek or Feierabend steps in and there would hardly be any drop-off(actually it would probably be an upgrade). Ramirez health is the least of my concerns with the team.
