Lookout Landing

59-47

I have to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to catch my flight to Seattle. So, naturally, JJ Putz decided to go and make sure this didn't end on time. But dear sweet Christ, sticking around was so so worth it. From a dramatic win over our biggest rivals in a game that felt lost so many times to Adam Jones' promotion, I can't remember the last time Mariner fans had reason to be so God damn happy.

Felix, you rocked tonight. Brandon Morrow, you did too. Yuniesky Betancourt, you rocked more. Jose Lopez, you didn't. And Jason Ellison, while I know this whole situation sucks, know that we'll always appreciate what you did while you were here. Never before has a backup outfielder meant so much to the future of a franchise, and I hope you're able to find a good home for yourself.

I'm going to go to bed so I can make this flight without being too much of a wreck. I'll see some of you guys tomorrow night in Tacoma at the first of our LL/USSM get-togethers. I'll be the tall guy with the shit-eating grin.

biggest suckfest: JJ Putz...
it just sounds unnatural, so strange
Tomorrow.
Jamey Wright vs Jake Westbrook early.

Root for the rangers, Cheer for Lofton, whoops, I mean um no, still fuck Kenny Lofton!

I think I will just stay up til that game starts actually, havn't pulled an allnighter in a while.

Missed the Felix Catastrophe, you think he was fakin a bit to throw off the Angels? I've seen pitchers leave for less many times.

I dunno
it seemed pretty genuine. It appeared that he just got the wind knocked out of him, so it was intense, but short-lived...
Just so you all know
I was at the game...and the atmostphere outside of the stadium after the game was AMAZING..people screaming, honking yelling...it was so awesome!!! WOOOO
I am feeling more jealousy
than at any other moment in my life...

it seems like this team could roll out a 10-12 game winning streak off of the emotion of this win alone

Yeah well I saw Adam Jones last game in Tacoma
....Yeah you win
Texas wins tomorrow
and we are the wild card leaders.  GO SALTY!!!
thats like
having your backup date to the prom already inline, its a good thing, but first choice is better ie the division
Unusual
Biggest Suckfest: J.J. Putz
Biggest Contribution: Brandon Morrow

Does not compute.

I see Coach is ignoring everything we told him
and still trolling at HH.

Your a dumbfuck Coach.

well
some peoples kids eh, i havent even been to HH only other teams blog i went to his tampas because i have a softspot for them with there tiny 24mil payroll
UGHHH..
Seriously Coach if you a problem with HH post it here, stop trolling.  Actually fuck it, do what you want, you don't speak for any of us...so whatever.
God damn it coach
Whose turn is it to rape him on a trade in BMO?
You guys said you won't mind!
No they didn't you idiot.
They were just screwing around. Did you see how we reacted to the two Angel fans in the gamethread? And they weren't even trolling! Imagine how pissed right the fuck off the guys at HH feel. Not that I give a shit, but I wouldn't want that happening here.

You had your chance for redemption Coach and you blew it. Loser.

Kind of hard to tell seriousness from joking
on the internet.
John Olerud sucked
haha
oh man that gets funnier each time
Not when you use common freaking sense it isn't.
Besides, who gives a fuck even if we said it was
ok for you to do so. That doesn't make it a non douchebag thing to do.
Your not going to any of the LL/USSM nights right?
his mom would
probably think it was a nambla meeting or something. plus he probably has a curfew aswell. and taking the bus and all that shit... to much for him
I was going to make a John Olerud Sucks sign
Either that or tell Wlad not to add him on myspace. By the way Coach it is just you, he added me today after the game.
he added my friend as well
or at least, that what he told me.
haha
cold as ice and funny as hell
He just added me in the last hour

not tryin to rub it in or be a dick
It's probably just the age thing. I deny all minors unless I'm sure I know them, friends of my brother, etc.
unless its a hot chick...
am I right guys, am I right??

</shamelessness>

anyways, just kidding, yeah I'm definitely the same way, and I can imagine a big time ball player would be even more picky about who he adds

I know what you mean
Hell, on Facebook I don't even confirm people I know half the time.
*Feels all honored and stuff*
ESPECIALLY if its a hot chick
I live in Missouri which has some of the most lax statuatory laws, but damn, those growth hormones in our food are doing wonders.

BTW, 17 is fine, 16 is cool if you're 18... I'm 23 so I'm not sure why I should even know that.

Excuse me Mr. Hcoguy
hmmm
think i did the one on the right.
they both
looked 18 to me
No matter how many times I watch that GIF
I always check if I can see more skin on those chicks
FUCKIN EH!
I watched it several times, yup. the one on the right really does look familiar.
haha me too
thats gotta hurt your pride
Did you even read this?
How not to be a retard
I hate my life.
I seriously do.
Why do you ask a question
Then do the exact opposite of what we tell you?
whats it all about Will?
could it have something to do with a desperate need for attention?? Daddy/Mommy didn't hug me enough?? me thinks i stumbled across the answer to the big question...

I promised myself I was going to stay out of this stupid discussion, but this guy just loves doing this shit, so it seems to be somewhat unavoidable.

i hear ya
but i do feel sorry for him a bit and trying to help explain the shit since he doesnt seem to get it. but it doesnt even go in one ear and out the other, it just bounces of his thick fucking skull
Its simple
to do one main key thing... dont go to HH just dont go there.  its not like your kicking an opiate addiction, those are hard.  all you have to do is simply not click onto a website. presto half your problem is gone
every time you think that
just think of Reggie Willits. The baseball player who never gets to swing the bat. That my friend, is hell.
not to mention
the ethnically ambiguous name that his crackwhore mother gave him.
Don't let it bother you Coach/Will
this one is one me.  I gave you props for getting under their skin and I shouldn't have.  I'd chalk up what I said to game thread emotion - I was so happy we won that I didn't care what happened.  You were still wrong for trolling, but I slightly (barely?) provoked you to do so.

Bottom line..don't take anything you read in a gamethread seriously.

Felix is funny...
talking about how he was getting pissed that they kept asking him if he needed to come out between each inning after the collision.
Parting shot before bed:
In an impossibly ironic turn of events, the Angels were done in by Reggie Willits swinging at a ball.
poetic
enjoy seattle... I wish I could. Not until the 10th, and I have to settle for the White Sox because of my vacation schedule... sucks
I am so ridiculously happy this series is over
because, try as I might, I'm just not strong enough to resist the urge to see what's being said over at Halos Heaven. The less said about that spasming contest of a blog, the better.

Of course, now we get to play Boston! Should be interesting. Oh, who am I kidding, we're going to stink more than the smell of bong water on the floor of Jeff Weaver's car.

They are angel fans
what do you expect? i havent been to HH ever because the only thing angels related i care about is them losing and i doubt i will get insight into that there.
I have never
Wanted a last place team wanted to win a meaningless August game more than I want Texas to win tommorow. I don't care if there are 55+ games left and it would be by less than .001 percentage points, I want to be in the playoffs for one night.
Totally
Amen, brother
Say
Weren't the Angels one-hundred and twenty zillion and Oh when leading after the 8th inning or something?
they werent leading
it was tied
Most (all?) teams have a stat like that.
Not teams with bad bullpens.
Hard to find stat.
Best I can come up with is this http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/newsstand/discussion/post_gazette_smizik4/

The Pirates, since 2001, are 377-21 when leading after 8. I don't think they have been noted as having a good bullpen, starting pitching, offense, defense, or ownership in that time period.

Yeah
Teams don't usually lose once they have a lead in the later innings.  Sure, bad bullpens blow games, but usually, teams hang on for the win.
This might just be...
the most hilariously bipolar team in the history of baseball.
I think that's just us
I dont believe this.
Im coming to the Coach's rescue.  You all suck.

Post 1:

I would look the other way if
Coach left his mark on that post.

Post 2 after Coach did exactly that:

Owens got under their skin
good job Coach!

by MFAN on Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 11:43:29 PM PDT

Your bad, LL.  Now shut up about it.

I was joking
but sure, I'll take the blame.
and in my defense
I typed that before he trolled over there tonight.  I meant that has in "Owens has got under their skin over the past two months".

But again, I'll take the blame.

Game thread emotion
I'm going to start using that as my excuse for
everything.

Do something bad at work? Game thread emotion.

Cheat on the girlfriend? Game thread emotion.

Kill a hooker? Game thread emotion.

Game thread emotion
Almost got me killed after the Colorado game last year.
From Baker's blog
Tired of players spouting the party line, as so many of them did after the Mariners stood still at the trade deadline? Well, here's a non party-line quote from Jose Guillen, who pulled me aside and told me he's absolutely "pissed off'' about the Jones promotion.

"I just hope they understand this isn't Triple-A,'' he told me. "This is the big leagues.''

"This is a totally different league,'' he continued. "I understand he's a good prospect and he's ready. But this team has been good. I just completely don't understand that move right there.''

9 infield hits
4 by the Angels, including an infield double, and 5 by the Mariners. Weirdest game ever. Also, someone needs to tell Lopez that he fell into a time vortex and that it is perpetually April.

Incidentally, if you dare to venture into HH, you'll see that now tit is being said that JJ is a bad closer, and in support of this he states the belief that the All Star Game matters. Good stuff.

We all know Rev's an idiot
Panther, bitch.
Jose Guillen is a dumbass.
Notwithstanding Guillen's impressive statline against left-handed pitchers (.396/1.147) and cannon of an arm, the guy has terrible range in right field (Zone Rating: .792) and is well-known as a petulant malcontent throughout Major League Baseball.

As it is, I wouldn't be against Guillen being placed on waivers with the objective of letting another team claim him for free. With Wladimir Balentien currently tearing it up with the Tacoma Rainiers, Guillen would probably be better served as a designated hitter for a mediocre team (e.g., the Minnesota Twins) than he would be staying here.

Of course, I'm the same guy who wants Richie Sexson to be immediately waived with the irrational hope that the New York Yankees might claim him; thus, my ideas should be taken with a grain of salt.

You've been dissing Guillen for a while.
An ~.800 OPS by a righthanded hitter in Safeco Field is quite welcome.

His defense is better than Raul's, and left field in Safeco is bigger than right field, so putting Jones in left makes a lot more sense. As for being a petulant malcontent, how has this negatively affected our team?

Truthfully, I agree with you.
Unlike Raul Ibañez, Jose Guillen isn't an over-the-hill has-been whose best days are behind him. Nonetheless, I'm still heavily perturbed by Guillen's ill-tempered surliness toward Adam Jones' well-earned promotion.

In any event, though, the Seattle Mariners would be best served with Wladimir Balentien in right field, Adam Jones in left field, and a platoon of Guillen and Ibañez at designated hitter -- with Jose Vidro being used as a pinch hitter -- however, that scenario will probably never come to fruition.

As I said in the diary
I'm not too concerned about Guillen's statements because I'm relatively sure he'll sing a different tune when Jones starts contributing to the team in positive ways.

However, it is August now.  We all wanted Jones up a month ago (or earlier) so his impact on the team would be bigger.  At this point, he's going to get into about 50 games, probably only about 175 at bats, and only about 400 innings of defense.  And that's assuming that McLaren actually plays him.

If Jones ends up getting the Ellison treatment, then there really was no reason to promote him.

No one falls for the...
"We'll pull him if you claim him" trick anymore, ever since some team put in a claim for someone and ended up with the check AND package.
Kevin Towers once made a huge mistake.
As is noted within the following article, the San Diego Padres carelessly claimed Randy Myers off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/news/1998/08/06/myers_padres_update/

Inarguably, that precedent makes it highly unlikely that an overpaid, underperforming hack like Richie Sexson would be claimed off of waivers.

Why use a fifth starter when you don't need one?
Especially when your fifth starter is Horacio "1K/BB " Ramirez. Any theories?
Especially this weekend
We could just skip HoRam and go straight to Washburn on Friday night.
Unless
This is a calculated decision to skip HoRam's start in Baltimore instead...but somehow I think that involves too much foresight.
I feel your pain..
I wake up at 4 am every morning to go to work.  The  moment JJ gave up that HR I knew it was time to get the coffee ready for the morning.
Damn damn damn
I had to leave at the bottom of the 10th to drive home. Now I'm home, 500 miles later. I wish I would've stayed.

Shit shit shit

I'll be honest
That moment of joy was preceded by about an hour of pain.
I'm kinda glad I missed the game
I was following via text messages and LL on my phone but the battery died after Putz blew the save. I was clueless to what was happening and when I got home and saw Jeff's post, I assumed that it meant Yuni had popped out with the bases loaded and Guillen was trying to kill him.
Here is my morning song
I really need to learn the html to post youtube

I love the white stripes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31Cz_vlwSx4

that WE chart is nuts
I'm counting those two threads under this one
as part of the gamethreads, so we have a total of 2056 posts for that game. New record.
Slight update
Cleveland up 2-0 over the Rangers in the 5th, still could go either way.

Yankees though?  Clemens is getting absolutely trashed by the White Sox...8-0 in the 2nd.

good lord
will the yankees please just die already
8-5
and it's 8-8
I hate you Yankees
White Sox
Oh how the mighty have fallen.
fuckin yankees
Nice to see Clemens trashed. That was a great contract...
HAHA Yeah
Screw Clemens.
My fantasy team am cry
Rajah ;_;

that'll teach me to miss the draft.

But, But, But, But, But, But, But, But, But...
<ESPN> Clemens' contract is the biggest bargain in baseball! </ESPN>
Clemens is old!
lol
So Indians win
Now we're rooting for the A's.
White Sox up 11-8 in the 5th now
Anybody noticed that Ichiro has taken a 3 point lead over Ordonez in the batting title race?
anyone watching the fsn replay
lets start a whole new game thread

JOHJIMA DOUBLE

BETANCOURT DOUBLE
okay i'll stop now
Just thinking...
Now that the Nats signed Young, what do you guys think of Nick Johnson.  He fills the same role as Broussard but we could use another LHB and he actually walks.
I usually feel bad about
cutting and pasting sections but screw ESPN and I don't want to make you guys read it all.  Its about the Mariners at the deadline:

There's no team we feel sorrier for than the Mariners. As a scout from another club put it, "They had more scouts out there seeing pitchers than most teams have out for World Series coverage." Name one pitcher whose name you heard in any rumor, and the Mariners either checked him out or made a serious bid on him. One GM nominated them as The Team That Was Most Likely to Have Traded for Mark Buehrle. But Buehrle foiled that plan by re-signing with the White Sox. Next on Seattle's starting pitchers list were Jon Garland and Matt Morris. But Garland turned out to be unaffordable, and Morris pitched so badly, he plummeted right off the radar screen of everyone but the Pirates. Last up: The Mariners hung in to the end on Dotel and on Tampa Bay's Al Reyes. But they wound up with none of the above. So can they stay with the Angels with their current staff? "It all depends on [just-reactivated] Mark Lowe and on Horacio Ramirez staying healthy in the rotation," one scout said. "They don't have a lot of room for error."

That's good to hear.
They were aggresive without being stupid.
I think this is putting it kindly.
"They don't have a lot of room for error"

I'm pretty sure we all knew that already though.

hmmm
"Horacio Ramirez staying healthy in the rotation,"

ESPN seems to be off again, how is Ho's health important?? If he gets hurt Baek or Feierabend steps in and there would hardly be any drop-off(actually it would probably be an upgrade).  Ramirez health is the least of my concerns with the team.
