and I've been one since 1961, at age 8...we never really expect anything good to ever happen, since it rarely has. One NBA championship in 1979, and a shared National Championship in College Football have been the 2 shining moments in Seattle Sports history...well, at least we are not Tampa Bay
forth almost daily now between the two for about a month. It's been crazy.
Speaking of crazy, Conor Jackson just hit a two run bomb off of Peavy in the first. I think thats the first time we've scored against Peavy all season.
The D-Backs have all that great young talent developed in their minor league system: Drew, Young, Jackson, Quentin, etc. (One of the reasons I'm so optimistic about the future of my FIRST team, the Nats, is because we poached Mike Rizzo from you guys.)
The Pads have assembled a great roster through inspired acquisitions: Maddux, Young, Gonzalez, Bradley, etc.
Both have a genuine motherfuckin' ACE in Peavy and Webb (and the Pads also have the honky C. Young). As a Nats fan I also like seeing the rubber-armed Livan! succeed in his new home.
I hope the NLCS is a 7 game grudge match between the two teams. Honestly, I'd have to flip a coin between which team I prefer, but I suppose that the D-Backs' flaunting of their Pythagorean plus the presence of Livo makes me slightly prefer them.
They don't have a lot of veterans, as they cleaned house 2-3 years back and reduced their budget, so they didn't really have any choice but to play the kids.
The Mariners were really in content mode after 2001 cruising with the same roster. Ruskell has done a good job of bringing in new talent every year to fill weaknesses without handicapping him himself with the cap for future years. Brought in Kearney and Pollard this year, traded an overvalued Boulware for an undervalued Babin. Supper Bowl predictions are never easy to make, but this is a team who's #1 priority is a Super Bowl and fielding a lasting team, something the 2002-2003 Mariners could never claim
RB are a dime a dozen and are all products of there offensive line.

And we've got football/college football now. It will make the prospect of another meaningless September a little easier. Not much, just a tiny tiny bit.
The great thing about hockey for me is that I follow it in a completely different way than I follow baseball. I'm not analytical. I'm worried about things like line chemistry and mental preparation. I don't try to predict things, and where I might make snarky comments when the Mariners hit or allow a homer, every goal scored by or against the Sens draws a strong visceral reaction.
but I have to root for the Leafs if the Avs (liked them since mid-90s), Sabres (liked them since the Stars debacle, I felt sorry for them), or Lightning (Martin St Louis!) all suck.
Its not my fault though, I had no idea everyone hates the Leafs until it was too late.
I just hate the Stars and Blue. Oh and the New York teams. Screw them. Oh, and the Penguins! Booo. Crosby looks awesome though. I just hate Pittsburgh, so thats not a hard one to figure.
When one of my guys face them, im always worried about Blake more.
My guys are
Federer, Safin, Nadal, Ferrero, and Hewitt. Hewitt used to be my favorite, but the other 4 were kinda climbing the charts together, so I rooted for all 4...had no idea they would be as good as they are.
Gotta work on my eye though, as I claimed Federer would be the 3rd best of the 4, with Nadal behind him.
They really make tennis fun now. Then again, Virtua Tennis probably contributed a ton. Awesome game.
which means that they're really pissed. And you didn't see Oregon run defense last week. Neither team has a defense, so whoever has the ball last wins.
Our offense is what it is, our starting pitching is what it is, but the bullpen was solid as a rock for almost the whole season.
I'm not sure if it's the incredibly long stretch of games that did it or the addition of John Parrish and Rick White but for a while, it's gotten pretty difficult to feel comfortable with a lead.
I blame Parrish and White's veteran presence for making the rest of the bullpen suck. If having vets in the clubhouse can magically make other players better, the reverse should also be true.
"It's easier for hitters to get comfortable,'' Sherrill said of the impact not getting corner calls can have.
His 3-2 pitch to Wilson Betemit was called a ball and Sherrill walked up and talked to the umpire.
"He told me that Kenji (Johjima) moved his mitt too much,'' Sherrill said. "I think he needs to read the rules but what are you going to do?''
Sherrill added that his interpretation of the rules is that a pitch is called a ball or strike based on where it crosses the plate, not where the catcher frames it.
"It's Yankee Stadium, what are you going to do?'' he said with a shrug.
You can already have programs/robot call balls and strikes (though this needs to be better, witness Gameday) and fair/foul.
One they figure out a way to call safe/out, we've got our bases pretty much covered except for things like calling the infield fly rule, GR2Bs, balks, etc.
We're about 1 year away from actually being able to field test a one man umpire crew (where the one person just calls things I outlined above), and it'll take a few years to better the technology, but there you go.
Given baseball's rate of adopting new idea, I'd say this might gain traction sometime around 2078.
It's not like we're 6 or 7 games out. We're still only 3, we can make that up! Who knows what's going to happen? Maybe we'll sweep the Tigers and the Royals will sweep the Yankees! What would happen if America had given up the Revolutionary War, or WWII or the Spanish-American War? We never did, and you know what? We ended up being victorious. I say, when the going get tough, the tough get going. Let's not give up this season, UNTIL. THE. VERY. LAST. LOSS!
Sure, anything can happen in baseball. Such as the Mariners going from 1.0 game back to 7.5 games back of the AL West lead in a matter of days....going from 3.0 up from the Yankees to 3.0 down from the Yankees.
This team is accomplishing some amazing feats. Unfortunately, those feats are in the wrong direction.
M's still have an outside chance but if they're even to THINK about still making it to the playoffs that bullpen has to be rock solid real quick.
considering that the war was fought on our soil, I call that a win.
Otherwise you could call Vietnam a win for us. Since our goal for entering the conflict was to prevent the spread of communism throughout asia and for the most part it didn't.
That would have been immensely stupid, since it would have given the other powers a chance to expand into North America with our forces tied up supressing natives.
From the British point of view, the war was an object lesson to James Madison not to try to interfere with the Napoleonic Wars (by cutting food supplies to the UK). He didn't really get the point very quickly, and by the time it was over and done it was beggining to become quite expensive and aggravating to Whitehall.

I just tried to say another famous war, that we won and since we didn't win Vietnam...Coach Owens - September 5, 2007

War of 1812, Barbary Wars,
Persian Gulf, WWI, Mexican-American war, the "war" against the indians, the cold war...Matthew - September 6, 2007
I'm stunned that you guys think you won 1812
It's like some sort of historical mass hallucination.Graham MacAree - September 6, 2007
Isn't part of the reason Canada exists
BECAUSE the Brits won the War of 1812?Yeah, we really don't discuss that war in school, for whatever reason ;P
Gomez - September 6, 2007
our country still exists
considering that the war was fought on our soil, I call that a win.Otherwise you could call Vietnam a win for us. Since our goal for entering the conflict was to prevent the spread of communism throughout asia and for the most part it didn't.
Matthew - September 6, 2007
We weren't trying to invade or destroy the US
That would have been immensely stupid, since it would have given the other powers a chance to expand into North America with our forces tied up supressing natives. From the British point of view, the war was an object lesson to James Madison not to try to interfere with the Napoleonic Wars (by cutting food supplies to the UK). He didn't really get the point very quickly, and by the time it was over and done it was beggining to become quite expensive and aggravating to Whitehall.
Oh, and y'all invaded Canada too.
Graham MacAree - September 6, 2007
pfffft, whatever
it's what you get for trying to arm the people who were trying to rape of their land.Matthew - September 7, 2007
We didn't
"win" the Persian Gulf, as our objective was to capture Hussien and we didn't so, in retrospect, we didn't win.Coach Owens - September 6, 2007
The first one.
Our objective was never to capture Hussein. We stopped before we even went to Baghdad, because our objective was to free Kuwait.Don't get it confused with the latest gulf conflict (where we did capture Saddam, and that WAS the goal).
Thingray - September 6, 2007
No
the goal was to get rid of the WMDs.We have failed.
Corco - September 6, 2007
That's true..
I was trying to keep from getting too political. But the first Gulf War, we achieved our goal, which was to liberate Kuwait.
Thingray - September 7, 2007
Wasn't Rick White
in that war? I heard he's been through some.LongBeachDave - September 5, 2007
No, No.
It wouldn't be possible for White to be in the Spanish-American War, he was in the Revolutionary War silly!Coach Owens - September 5, 2007
