Besides, you were the one who tipped us all off to the Rays. Therefore, if anyone won any Rays related bets, you should donate a portion of your winnings to Jeff.
and I have at times struggled with the question “how far is the edge of the infield grass from the side of first base?”, and now I know the answer to that age-old query. NINE FEET. Thank you TBS. Or TNT. Whoever.
So. If he threw as hard as Maddux, he wouldn't have made it out of Junior college. Instead he got to the show. Stuff matters. It doesn't make you good, but matters a lot.
Sonnanstine can do and does more with his fastball, and he’s better at relying on his offspeed stuff. And Weaver doesn’t throw hard enough that he can rely on his fastball as much as he does.
Listen, I'll listen to stats. You guys don't like results based analysis and I get that. But I'm looking at peripherals too. Just not the ones you guys like.
LD% means nothing to me. Until we have hit f/x telling us how hard pitches are hit, LD can mean something different for every person. And all line drives aren’t created equal.
Listen, I like Sonnanstine, I’ve really come around. A lot (I hated him), but Weaver is every bit as good.
Homeruns, strike-outs, walks, hits (I understand your aversion to looking at hits)
but he’s consistently shown that he’s going to give up almost 10 hits per 9 innings pitched. 54 starts in his career is a pretty large sample size. He can get away with it because he walks absolutely no one, but it’s a consistent trend.
Looking at the numbers, Weaver gives up just over a hit. Walks more, but K’s more too. I don’t know, It’s close, I’ll admit that. I’d take Weaver. Looking at it more closely, I don’t think it’s as clear cut as either of us have made it out to be. I think they’re virtually the same pitcher.
But fly balls, while they go out of the park, also end up as outs more ofter than groundballs. And if you can be a fly ball pitcher, while not giving up homeruns, you're fine. Sonnanstine and Weaver have almost identical homerun rates for their career.
Giving up more hits doesn't matter so much if you're a ground ball pitcher.
Sonnanstine gets more grounders. For the most part, grounders don’t turn in to doubles or triples or inside the park homers. More hits doesn’t really matter…ground ball tendencies are good, even if they lead you to give up more hits than a flyball pitcher.
that Jered Weaver is one of the most unique pitchers in the history of baseball, or that he’s been the benefactor of good luck/a home park that suppresses HRs?
I've looked at the process. I've looked at the detailed numbers. He's not such an exteme GB pitcher that it makes up for the difference in K's. Yes he doesn't walk anyone, which is awesome, because if he did, he'd suck.
He gets hit had from time to time. He’s hittable if he’s off just a little. And sometimes he’s off. He’s got to be perfect to be effective. His stuff just isn’t good enough not to be. You can disagree and I’m fine with that, but that’s where we are. And how I feel about the situation.
And having a lower SLG despite more flyballs and line drives is luck, even if Sonnanstine allows a few less balls in play because those balls in play are less valuable to a hitter than Weaver’s.
I bet him that the Giants would win more games than the Padres in 1999 and came away with an autographed picture of A-Rod and Griffey in Mariner uniforms
Why would the scoreboard implore White Sox fans to wave their rally towels while the White Sox couldn't possibly rally by circumstance of playing defense?

Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Sonnanstine was better than Weaver this year.
Teej - October 6, 2008
They were the exact same pitcher.
I’ll take Weaver on the whole.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
We'll give you Jarrod Washburn and $6M for Sonnanstine
seattlebruin - October 6, 2008
tRA has them a decent margin apart.
I trust that over ERA and WHIP.
Teej - October 6, 2008
Not by much, if at all.
Weaver’s stuff is real unspectacular.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Weaver throws about 4mph harder. That's significant.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Daniel Cabrera throws way harder than Greg Maddux.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
So. If he threw as hard as Maddux, he wouldn't have made it out of Junior college. Instead he got to the show. Stuff matters. It doesn't make you good, but matters a lot.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
It matters more than it should.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Okay, but very few guys have Sonnanstine's command.
Which is why it matters a lot.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
In this case it doesn't matter because Sonnanstine's command makes him a better pitcher than Weaver.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
He's a tools whore.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
And his stuff isn't as good. Which makes it even again. Their numbers were just about identical.
Same amount of homeruns, Sonny walked less, Weaver gave up fewer hits, Weaver K’d a lot more.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
You're looking at the wrong things.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
You know, I actually agree with Tyler's main point here
that stuff matters a lot because it automatically puts a pitcher’s potential much higher.
However, Sonnanstine is way better. He throws strikes. 121 tRA+ this year.
seattlebruin - October 6, 2008
I agree that it usually matters, but in this case (Weaver vs. Sonnanstine) it doesn't, because Sonnanstine is demonstrably better.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
It's also straight as an arrow.
Sonnanstine can do and does more with his fastball, and he’s better at relying on his offspeed stuff. And Weaver doesn’t throw hard enough that he can rely on his fastball as much as he does.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Yet he gets better results than Sonnanstine.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Results?
Come on.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
And also, he doesn't.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
According to what?
Sonnanstine: 121 tRA+
Weaver: 111
Sonnanstine walks half as many batters as Weaver, gets more ground balls and allows more line drives. Weaver strikes more men out.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Er... LESS line drives.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Wrong
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008

P Brady - October 6, 2008

JI - October 6, 2008
Nobody said it did
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Listen, I'll listen to stats. You guys don't like results based analysis and I get that. But I'm looking at peripherals too. Just not the ones you guys like.
LD% means nothing to me. Until we have hit f/x telling us how hard pitches are hit, LD can mean something different for every person. And all line drives aren’t created equal.
Listen, I like Sonnanstine, I’ve really come around. A lot (I hated him), but Weaver is every bit as good.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
What reason do we have to believe that Sonnanstine gives up harder-hit line drives?
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
What peripherals are you looking at?
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Sonnanstine gets more ground balls, and that's huge think for me.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
But fly balls, while they go out of the park, also end up as outs more ofter than groundballs. And if you can be a fly ball pitcher, while not giving up homeruns, you're fine. Sonnanstine and Weaver have almost identical homerun rates for their career.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Fly ball pitchers who don't give up home runs don't exist
Groundballs are much much better to generate.
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
But being a flyball pitcher and not giving up a lot of home runs is being lucky.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
And grounders don't turn into doubles or triples too often either.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
I agree. But Sonnanstine isn't an extreme GB pitcher.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
But Weaver is an extreme flyball pitcher, so the difference is still very real.
32% this year is among the very worst in the league.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Can you be lucky for almost 600 innings in a row and it still be luck?
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Park effects
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
The Trop more of a pitcher park than LAA. And homeruns are similar.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
The Trop is ~HR neutral
Anaheim trims them by 13%.
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
According to Statcorner
Anaheim: HR/FB: 86.9
Trop: HR/FB: 98.8

Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008

joof - October 6, 2008
Yes
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Giving up more hits doesn't matter so much if you're a ground ball pitcher.
Sonnanstine gets more grounders. For the most part, grounders don’t turn in to doubles or triples or inside the park homers. More hits doesn’t really matter…ground ball tendencies are good, even if they lead you to give up more hits than a flyball pitcher.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
But his fly balls are as costly as Weavers.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
What I mean is, he gives up as many homeruns. I'd have to look at SLG% against, but I'd imagine they're similar.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Sonnanstine's SLG% against this season was .446. Weaver's was .416.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
A lot of that is luck
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
The fact that his and Weaver's HR were the same this year doesn't mean that's what it should be.
Someone pitched above or below their true talent level, perhaps. Or got unlucky.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
But it's been consistent throughout his career.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
You said that sample size was 600 IP, right?
Lots of weird fluky things can happen in 600 innings.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Yes, but that's still a big sample size.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Not when the results don't match the batted ball types, it isn't.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
It's a big sample size according to what?
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Is it more likely
that Jered Weaver is one of the most unique pitchers in the history of baseball, or that he’s been the benefactor of good luck/a home park that suppresses HRs?
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
You act like I'm calling him an ace. I'm saying he's better than Sonnanstine.
And I’m not saying it’s by a mile.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
But all the evidence points to him not being better than Sonnanstine
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Except their careers to this point.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Based on what?
You’re using results-based analysis. Look at the process.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
I've looked at the process. I've looked at the detailed numbers. He's not such an exteme GB pitcher that it makes up for the difference in K's. Yes he doesn't walk anyone, which is awesome, because if he did, he'd suck.
He gets hit had from time to time. He’s hittable if he’s off just a little. And sometimes he’s off. He’s got to be perfect to be effective. His stuff just isn’t good enough not to be. You can disagree and I’m fine with that, but that’s where we are. And how I feel about the situation.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
He could be a right handed David Wells
that’s a pretty fucking valuable pitcher.
JI - October 6, 2008
Wells threw harder in his prime and from a better hand.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
He had better hands?
JI - October 6, 2008
Yes.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Weaver is an extreme flyball pitcher, so yes, it does make up the difference in strikeouts.
And that difference is further diminished in the difference in walks and types of balls in play.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Not really.
I’m just saying that I don’t think Weaver is likely to enjoy the results he has enjoyed to this point in his career.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Yes, through his 461 inning career (not 600).
And having a lower SLG despite more flyballs and line drives is luck, even if Sonnanstine allows a few less balls in play because those balls in play are less valuable to a hitter than Weaver’s.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Fair enough. I want to know what I was looking at.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
It's pretty much out of the pitcher's control whether a batted ball goes for a hit or not.
Within reason, of course.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Also, tRA comparison
Weaver: 4.25
Sonnanstine: 3.91
Close, but I’d take Sonny
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Last year Sonnanstine started in front of one of the worst defenses I've ever seen
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
So did last years Kazmir and Shields and they were good last year.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Because they were very, very good.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Kazmir's BABIP was even worse than Sonnanstine's
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
I feel Kazmir striking all those guys out has something to do with that, as the defense is used less
joof - October 6, 2008

Oh I must have been confused by the ambiguity of this statement

Dewey N - October 6, 2008
My mind changed
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
I think silliness and adorability have a high correlation
Dewey N - October 6, 2008
The first move I made
was to make that picture my desktop wallpaper. It’s a thing of disturbing beauty.
pdb - October 6, 2008
in san diego orioles look a lot like parakeets.
pdb - October 6, 2008
Try this, Jeff.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Dammit - this:
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
This kid looks like Jeff Gordon.
Poor ugly fucker.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
This is why you have no new readers since early 2007.

Delightful.

JI - October 6, 2008
Ben Zobrist.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
Motherfucker had a .250 ISOp
JI - October 6, 2008
Motherfucker's HR/FB% is nearly the same as Pujols and he has 20 career minor league homeruns.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
He's a bad, bad man.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
That was one long popup.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Wow.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
I would have loved to see Thome bunt
Dewey N - October 6, 2008
Angels/Sox thread goes up at 5:15
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
P Brady - October 6, 2008
It's almost like there are different time zones.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
There's something besides EST?
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Yeah, it's called the rest of the world.
pdb - October 6, 2008
Rest...of the world?
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Yup. They've all got time zones too.
China, oddly for a country its size, only has one, but still.
pdb - October 6, 2008
How many does Russia have? 11
It’s rediculous and not even funny.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
This I did not know.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
The Olympics taught me many things about China
pdb - October 6, 2008
At least one of them is biased.

Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
Drive on the shoulder/sidewalks.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Radio?
JI - October 6, 2008
It's not on KJR today. Other Seattle station?
(I know Jeff is in San Diego – just curious for Seattle)
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
850. Good luck getting reception.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
I had problems getting KJR in when I wanted to listen to Sunday Night Baseball
on the drive back to Bellingham.
JI - October 6, 2008
Thanks.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
I drove to Tacoma and back yesterday.
Got reception around Federal Way on the way down. Never lost it on the way back. It was kind of weird.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Where is it based?
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Tacoma.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
My Awesome '96 Ford Contour shit mobile will pick it up.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
I'm sure rally ignition is what drove Friedman to acquire Jason Bartlett.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
I choose to remember Matt Thornton as a sucky pitcher.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
My cat is still limping from sleeping in the birdbath when it tipped over. :(
Better today though. Nothing broken thank god.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Right.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
As long as nothing's broken, this would have been entertaining to see.
Double06 - October 6, 2008
Nothing's broken, except the birdbath.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
Should have traded Clement for him.
BrianL - October 6, 2008
Thorton terrifies me.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
I don't care if he's good now, I can't shake the feeling that the offensive team will score runs when Thornton pitches.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
He terrified us for years.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
That's unfortunate, but he's really good now.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
I know >:(
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
?
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Reminds me of a team I know...
Slurvey - October 6, 2008
GAH I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DON'T SHUT UP REYNOLDS
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Muted.
BrianL - October 6, 2008
Buntington Bear thinks this is excessive.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
It's the Matt Thornton death spiral. I'm trying to jinx him.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
I meant Reynolds screaming for a bunt.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
Whoopsies.
And it was really fucking annoying.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Whoever tried to tell me Reynolds was good was an asshat.
JI - October 6, 2008
It was all about relative worth.
When you stood him up next to the other pudnuckers on ESPN, he seemed like a friggin’ Nobel Prize winner.
esoteric - October 6, 2008
You could be on to something.
JI - October 6, 2008
Did they commercial the west coast?
Tyler - October 6, 2008
There hasn't been a single commercial since the inning began.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
TBS HD did.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Woo runs
Double06 - October 6, 2008
LOS.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008

Slurvey - October 6, 2008

BrianL - October 6, 2008

BrianL - October 6, 2008

Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
God I love Gameday 3D.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Go for the gold, Longoria!
Eyebrows - October 6, 2008
TRADE LONGORIA
He’s unclutch and his contract is a long-term albatross.
esoteric - October 6, 2008
Your sig hurts me.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
His laziness has been on display for all to see today.
Hitting those drag-ass homeruns because he doesn’t want to actually exert himself on the basepaths.
esoteric - October 6, 2008
A small part of me was hoping the Rays would lose a crucial game 5
as Matt Thornton shut them down just for the hilarity.
JI - October 6, 2008
Why would the scoreboard implore White Sox fans to wave their rally towels while the White Sox couldn't possibly rally by circumstance of playing defense?
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Run prevention is important.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
Yeah, but you can't rally when you're on defense.
BrettJMiller - October 6, 2008
Not in the same manner anyway.
JI - October 6, 2008
The White Sox offense is old and bad and they won't score 4 runs
unless Thome goes yard twice.
JI - October 6, 2008
God he wasn't even running hard.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Griffey's final at bat?
Eyebrows - October 6, 2008

kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Swingandamiss.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Appropriate.
Eyebrows - October 6, 2008
Actually solo homeruns are bad too
JI - October 6, 2008
But not as bad as a double
because doubles don’t kill rallies. Duh.
Eyebrows - October 6, 2008
Is it me or does Swisher look stoned in his gameday picture?
Slurvey - October 6, 2008
Swisher Sweet spliff.
kevin_ess - October 6, 2008
Harold Reynlods: still afraid of the ball.

JI - October 6, 2008
Your sarcasm detector was slower than Griffey's bat.

Perhaps those two commetns were sarcasm.

His email account would explode. People email him, which is weird. I've never considered emailing an admin.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Go Rays!
Slurvey - October 6, 2008
I don't think Friedman has gotten any credit from the broadcast crew the entire playoffs.
JI - October 6, 2008
He hasn't.
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
From anyone in the press, really.
It’s 100% Maddon and heart and grit.

Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
It would.

RJ, this is by far the most hilarious thing you've ever done on DRB.
P Brady - October 6, 2008
I've done hilarious things before?
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
Yes
Tyler - October 6, 2008
The Rays are a bunting team?
JI - October 6, 2008
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS

Does anyone else think that LDS wins are hilariously celebrated?
Seems to me the only time you should go batshit crazy is if you come back from 0-2
JI - October 6, 2008
*over-celebrated
JI - October 6, 2008
Nah, I think it's fine.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Yeah. Especially when you've never been there before. Next year, it won't be as crazy.
Now, go Angels! I want another 12 inning game. I want the Soxs, but I want them after a 5 game series with a depleted rotation and pen.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
I don't care how it ends as long as it involves K-Rod giving up a walk off HR.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
Which means I want it to end in a very specific fashion.
Aaron Campeau - October 6, 2008
hahaha. Game 5 walk-off would be ideal for me. In the 14th.
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Wouldn't that be in Anaheim?
Graham MacAree - October 6, 2008
You don't ruin my dreams with your logic!
Tyler - October 6, 2008
Upton jogs in from center field to celebrate . . .
Teej - October 6, 2008
Leave that man and his beautiful dark skin alone!
R.J. Anderson - October 6, 2008
He certainly did come in pretty slow
Jeff Sullivan - October 6, 2008
