More as it comes in, but the return to Colorado isn't yet known. Official word is now Greg Smith, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez.
Matt Holliday is due $13.5 million next year in his last season before free agnecy. He will net Type A status though, so keep that in mind when we know what Oakland gave up. Still, this seems like an odd move for a team that just spent a year dumping everyone with value for prospects.

Well how about that

I bet the flip him for something younger and cheaper.
JI - November 10, 2008
Like what the Cardinals were rumored to be offering for Holliday?
Sky Kalkman - November 10, 2008
Well technically that just cheaper.
JI - November 10, 2008
that's
JI - November 10, 2008
Good gravy.
Aaron Campeau - November 10, 2008
It's all part of Beane's master plan.
.Taylor - November 10, 2008
They're just going to flip him for Sherril,
who they’ll flip for Lillibridge + 3 other B level prospects.
Faux - November 10, 2008
Shwuah?
BrianL - November 10, 2008
Is Beane going to turn around trade him?
a’la the 90’s Piazza trade from LA to Florida to the Mets?
TheEmrys - November 10, 2008
This is an interesting idea
He might have a deal worked out with another team who has a prospect he really likes a lot, and They wanted Holliday. I wouldn’t put it past Beane.
staplemaniac - November 10, 2008
Colby Ramus and Cunningham in the same outfield!
Robert - November 10, 2008
Huh.
royalcurve - November 10, 2008
Wait what?
Robert - November 10, 2008
I read this as "Matt Holliday is athletic"
Phil Hatzenbuehler - November 10, 2008
Same. It was unsettling.

I also did
tootthekazoo - November 10, 2008
Make that 3
SethGrandpa - November 10, 2008
Doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
Get a great player for one year, get the draft picks after this year. And maybe he’ll give them a shot to win this year. Seems like a no-loss situation for Beane
BrettJMiller - November 10, 2008
There's a very obvious loss
in that the A’s might not be anywhere near contention level and the prospects he has to give up are of much more value than 2 draft picks.
Matthew - November 10, 2008
He goes from hitters' paradise, to pitchers' paradise.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - November 10, 2008
And NL to AL
Matthew - November 10, 2008
And beer to Rome.

30 second rule.

Oh wait, that’s about the same thing.

JI - November 10, 2008
What the fuck
Corco - November 10, 2008
greg smith will get hit hard in coors
if he’s the centerpiece + some expendable OF…they didnt give up much
heck they wanted 2 guys pushing 30 and a middle reliever from cards
Asfan4ever723 - November 10, 2008
I have a hard time believing they could get anyone better than Ludwick.
JI - November 10, 2008
Look out Anaheim!
Hehehehehehe
Like mentioned above, I think Holliday may the centerpiece in another trade Beane has concocted. And it might be with another NL West team that Colorado would have rejected. And didn’t Beane do something similar last offseason? Arizona traded with the White Sox and then Beane traded with Arizona and got the White Sox prospect. Chris Carter and Aaron Cunningham were previously in Chicago, went to Arizona, and landed in Oakland in the Haren deal.
My speculation: Beane flips Holiiday for Matt Kemp, Andre Etheir, or James Loney (maybe even 2 of the 3). If Beane tried working out a 3-way trade, Colorado probably wouldn’t accept a Holliday
-—> LA deal.Wilder. - November 10, 2008
Rosenthal says you're wrong.
Matthew - November 10, 2008
I would cry and kill Ned Coletti
if he made that trade.
Unless it was something like Ethier and a prospect for Holliday, I could live with that given Ethier’s age and ceiling.
bluemax - November 10, 2008
Would anyone else be the least bit surprised if the A's get Furcal now?
Aaron Campeau - November 10, 2008
I hope it doesn't happen
JI - November 10, 2008
He needs to wear red or blue
JI - November 10, 2008
I hope it doesn't happen, but there's no way the A's are getting Holliday and calling it good.
SS is their most obvious need.
Aaron Campeau - November 10, 2008
Thirdbase?
JI - November 10, 2008
Okay, SS is their second most obvious need.
Aaron Campeau - November 10, 2008
No, SS is more obvious than 3B
The A’s have a sunk cost Eric Chavez at third base. Even if he’s only a 50% chance of a league average player, that’s better than Crosby, who is a 0% chance of a league average player.
PaulThomas - November 11, 2008
I don't know.
Kirsten Schlewitz - November 11, 2008
WHAT?????
SethGrandpa - November 10, 2008
So confused.
Teej - November 10, 2008
I don't care.
Since the M’s are out of contention this year, I wouldn’t be too bothered if the Angel’s signed CC, and Pujol landed in Oakland.
[erm to one year contracts though].
EnglishMariner - November 10, 2008
It would be a sad, sad season in Seattle.

That’s quite a haul
Corco - November 10, 2008
What the crap ass balls
Nick S - November 10, 2008
Not quite as amusing as the Wlad 1.000 OPS projection, but still funny:
JI - November 10, 2008
His Avg drops 10 pts and his OPS only goes down 26 pts.
Ha…not buying it.
A 10 pt drop in BA would result in a 20 pt drop in OPS (with everything else held equal). I just don’t get their logic behind this one.
One less HR….Who are we kidding? Evidence ESPN doesn’t have a fucking clue what park adjustments are.

It was a pleasure.
Double06 - November 11, 2008
Fantastic
We’re rebuilding in ’09 anyway. All this means is that the Athletics lose good-looking prospects + a good reliever.
Now I know how the other ALW teams felt when we sent away Tillman/Jones/Sherrill.
katal - November 10, 2008
and Butler.. and Mickolio...
CKel - November 10, 2008
Absolutely
Losing them just doesn’t upset me as much as Chris, Adam, and George.
katal - November 10, 2008
Hmmm. I think this is more like losing Feierabend, a worse version Putz and, I don't know, Mike Saunders.
No, Carlos Gonzalez isn’t terribly similar to Saunders, but still… Gonzalez should be behind Aaron Cunningham and possibly Travis Buck in A’s OF depth. He’s fine, but this isn’t at all like the Tillman/Jones/Sherrill/Butler/Mickolio situation. The closest equivalent may be what the Twins got for Johan Santana. Gonzalez is a plus defender and MAY be a good hitter, while Gomez is a meh bat and perhaps the best outfielder in existence.
To me, the Rockies’ haul is indicative of the fact that they had no leverage; it was either take a deal or let Holliday walk next year. Which makes me think the Ludwick rumors weren’t true.

I sincerely hope not.

What the fuck Beane?
Goose - November 10, 2008
Thinking about it, it doesn't surprise me that they traded CarGon.
He was never Beane’s type of player anyways.

Except Bonifacio blows.

Just pointing out that Greg Smith is actually really bad.
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2008
Everyone knew that already.
JI - November 10, 2008
he has an all time great pickoff move.... that's something...
mikeA - November 10, 2008
The Ryan Feierabend comparisons become more and more apt.
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2008
Going forward, I actually like Ryan more...
Feierabend had the better tRA* and is almost 2 years younger.
Neither strike out a lot, but Feierabend has decent control.
To be fair, Smith is one of those guys who may beat his peripherals; he’s got no stuff and has consistently been a pretty effective pitcher. But yeah, Greg Smith is not a prospect.
marc w - November 10, 2008
Holliday leaving after 09 will net the A's draft picks though, so vive le rebuild
In the interim, Beane gets a kinda sorta draw that can hit for one year which he can make some sort of feeble effort to build around.
