Awful Name Value Team

C: Paul Lo Duca
1B: Paul Konerko
2B: Luis Castillo
SS: Mike Young
3B: Chone Figgins
LF: Pat Burrell
CF: Ken Griffey Jr.
RF: Jose Guillen
DH: Travis Hafner

SP:
Barry Zito
SP: Daisuke Matsuzaka
SP: Justin Verlander
SP:
Livan Hernandez
SP: Jon Garland
CL: Jason Isringhausen

If you set the replacement level at .292, and add a win above replacement for both the bench and the rest of the bullpen, this team would be expected to win between 65 and 70 games.

Star-divide

It's not the perfect awful name value team; it's an example of an awful name value team. You should see what happens when you plug Kenny Rogers or Jeff Suppan into that rotation in place of Verlander and Matsuzaka, who I only included because any GM who put together a rotation of Zito/Rogers/Suppan/Hernandez/Garland wouldn't be allowed out of the house. You have to maintain some semblance of reality, after all.

I can't believe Travis Hafner is finished.
From a .458 wOBA in 2006 to a .276 wOBA in 2008

Unfathomable.

At least Victor Martinez still has a job.
And that four year deal is just now kicking in.
With a 2013 option!

This is going to be so much worse than the Michael Young contract.

Nobodies perfect I guess.
Long contracts to DHs are stupid.
Hafner didn't exactly seem like a guy ripe for collaspe
And immediately after the contract was signed.

We know guys like Hafner tend to fall hard, but I never expected it to be this fast.

It's sad that us LGTers are just praying for 2007 again

And the best part is that no one has a fucking clue what happened.

I wonder how many games this team would win
His 2006 was epic.

I never thought that would be the end for him.

I'm guessing this is a reply to the wrong comment
If only that were indicated somewhere

I propose that this subthread be hidden now

or Jeff blamed for writing in a way in which my eyes did not pick up this sentence

I wonder in what sequence the keys appear on my keyboard.
It wasn't even under the stars.
And the ugly thought is that ...

our previous GM would would have placed (and in some cases did place) a premium value on every player on that list.

Especially since Young just won a Gold Glove.
In a shat on Monday, Chris Kahrl picked Figgins over Beltre

for whom she’d want on her team in 2009.

Shat is the perfect word there.
Chris Kahrl is not an analyst
What kind of name is "Kahrl" anyway?

Why not change it to “Karl” so it actually looks normal?

Do you have idea what her people have been though Coach?

Now you want to take away her cultural heritage.

*Sniff* What have I done?!?
I'm going to pretend that you're making a joke about Chris Kahrl's other name change because it makes me think you're an evil comedic genius.
I"m going with clueless, myself

it fits the Coach narrative much better.

You think one of the people in charge at BP

could figure out Beltre >>>>>>>>> Figgins

BP has/had exactly two redeeming people.
And one of them has basically traded baseball for politics
Seems like he's found his true calling.

Good for Nate. He deserves the plaudits he’s received this year.

Nice example of how the process of sabr stuff is much more important than the results; it’s so damned applicable.

Agreed. He really nailed it this year.
That's a call the average fan could make correctly.
On second thought, this is a bit of hyperbole.

I haven’t followed BP in a year and I know they have some new writers, so I’m not in a position to judge them.

The black helicopters came for you in the night?
They threatened to make him Mattina.
November resolution.

I’m trying to be nicer.

My drinking has increased.

Beer is more powerful if you haven't eaten yet
It was more than just Beltre.
McGoldrick (Los Angeles): Who has the most gas left in the tank: Adrian Beltre, Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Raul Ibanez, or Chone Figgins? Which ones would you want on your team in ’09?

Christina Kahrl: That’s not really a comparison of like to like, but I’d pick Figgins from among that crew, if only because speed guys seem to retain value wel enough. Beyond that, I’d take Beltre, but I can’t say I’m wildly enthusiastic about any of them. It’s easier to suggest that I’d put Paulie at the bottom of the pile, and work up from there.
Good golly
Women should never be allowed to talk baseball.
This is hilarious on at LEAST two levels.
I'm glad someone understands me.

That was quite the discussion.
And yet SBN still takes comedy away from us by allowing users to delete their own fanposts.
I'm surprised you remember this

You guys should have let me run with this though as I had not heard of her until that day. Pretty funny regardless. I’ll catch you tripping up one of these days.

When I saw that people weren't letting you run with it I was confused and more than a little disappointed.
My brethren at the Bay were nice enough to enlighten me

I don’t think I would have gotten off so easily at other sites.

I think it was an LLer that first pointed it out, actually.
Keep 'em in the kitchen.
Only when they're not giving birth.
That shouldn't be an issue for Ms. Kahrl.
Perhaps it was a failed attempt at satire?
At least Verlander has SOME chance of bouncing back, right?

Yes, his 2008 season was just awful, but he’s still only 25 and had success earlier in his career? I could see him bouncing back, maybe not to his dominant form, but at least to an above average pitcher. Or is he like Willis who had success due mainly to luck?

Willis would have been a good selection for this post
Hey look, I was right about something!
don't get cocky. kid
I'm a nerd

Luke: Got ‘im! I got ’im!
Han Solo: Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.

I'm not quite that nerdy

but I do think my snark would have been better had it been correctly punctuated.

Yeah but this team would hit so many home runs!
They would give up an ungodly amount of home runs as well
Then they'd get mad girls cause chicks dig the long ball.
So they'd be rich as hell and get mad chicks?

This doesn’t sound like the worst life of all time

You're scared of girls.
I know one person who would be interested in the clubhouse stories that come out of that team...
Jason Varitek would of been a better option that Paul Lo Duca.
Must...resist...being...a...grammar...nazi...
I'm not yet convinced that Varitek is completely done but he would've been fine too
But Jose Guillen is needed for proper clubhouse chemistry!
As

lucked as Dice-K was this year, isn’t there more proper selections ? I mean at least he hasn’t been bad. Carlos Silva?

...
