Two Things

1) The Indians appear set to sign Kerry Wood to a two-year deal worth ~$20m, possibly with a 2011 option. All he has to do at this point is pass a physical. The Indians were never going to be players for JJ, but by taking a closer off the market, they've put pressure on teams like Milwaukee, St. Louis, and especially Detroit to get one of their own before it's too late. Expect Zduriencik's conversations about JJ to get a lot more interesting.

2) With Ben Sheets having one foot out the door and CC Sabathia officially out of the picture, the Brewers need rotation help, and they're going to explore their options. The Mariners, meanwhile, currently have more starters than they can use. Jarrod Washburn's name may come up, but the real dark horse here is Erik Bedard - the Brewers tried to get Bedard for JJ Hardy last July, and while Bedard's stock has dropped since what with the surgery and all, it's possible Doug Melvin may come calling again. I don't think Bedard's going to get dealt, nor do I think that now would necessarily be the right time to try and do so in the first place, but that's just something to keep an eye on. Where there's a possible solution to an obvious need, there tends to be a phone call or two.

SBN 2.0 can eat me

the bastard cut out the sub-comment of

“delicious”

I thought the offers for Bedard last July were insulting?

Or were they insulting in comparison to what we gave up for him to begin with?

We're never going to get anything done if we compare that deal to any future deal.
We could package Felix in hopes to get equal value.
He'll never pan out, it's been three seasons.
Oh god please make think happen. please oh please oh please
3:00 p.m. — Latest on Putz, Fuentes

Mariners closer J.J. Putz remains a popular trade target.

The Tigers are interested in Putz and the Cardinals have offered center fielder Rick Ankiel and a prospect, according to a rival general manager.

*I know the Joyce trade is better. Shut up.

Sorry, Bavasi doesn't work here any more.
  • Also, no.
The prospect turns out to be Rasmus.
You are a respected voice around these pasrt and saying things like that is unfair.

It might confuse people.

That makes a shit ton of sense
I would do super backflips for a week
That would certainly solidify our outfield
Hell, I'd throw in Wlad
I'd throw in Wlad+.
I'd give up Wlad, Rowland Smith, and a B-/C+ prospect
I don't know if I'd go that far, but close.
That would be so so so so awesome.
mean spirited antagonizing of a downtrodden fanbase.

But man I would wet every pair of pants I owned if it were true.

Ankiel and Rasmus for J.J.?

Am I high or this is a deal that any GM would take in a second?

Oh wait, Matthew was being an asshole.

Dammit man, don’t kid about that. It’s hard to tell when you’re kidding.

It was in response to JI's subject line.
"the Brewers tried to get Bedard for JJ Hardy last July"

Reason number 354656534512345 why BIll Bavasi richly deserved to be fired. If that was an actual trade possibility, there were exactly two correct responses to that trade:

[ ] YES
[X] HELL, YES!

If that was true, we'd have to trade Putz

Only room for one JJ on a team

He'll have to put his middle name on the back of his jersey instead.
Would have been nice to get Hardy for Bedard, but talk about selling low.

After what we gave up to get Bedard, I would rather see what he can do for us in the first half of 2009.

Spontaneously combust?
Maybe that cyst will do more damage than we think.
Dave Dravecky

(note: I cannot see actual video on campus. I don’t know if it works or not.)

shut up shut up shut up
It's time to forget about what we traded to get him

Remembering that isn’t going to help any future negotiations.

Going down with the ship isn't a good plan at this point
You would make a horrible captain.
I'd take two lifeboats before anyone sounds the alarm for abandoning ship

One is for sitting, the other for putting my feet up.

and you'd want a third for toting all of the ship's lifejackets and food, so you don't get hungry.
A healthy Bedard is worth more than Hardy
That's more of what I was going for.
A healthy Bedard is a mythical creature

known only in legend.

I would be more likely to commend Bavasi for turning down a trade for a team that fired him the month before.
I was wondering when somebody else was going to notice/say something about that.
Jeff, where did you get the Hardy/Bedard trade note?
crap. hit send too fast.

all I found from last summer was a Stark note that “Clubs that have checked in with the Brewers say they’re being so aggressive in their hunt for a big-time starting pitcher, they might even be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks "in the right deal.” " and nothing that actually linked the two players and/or teams as a trade possibility.

Email
be interesting to know just what all else might have made up 'the right deal' at the time

and what his DL stint before the deadline might have done to impact what they wanted

Rick Ankiel

One of the things that interests me about St. Louis and JJ rumors is the possibility of adding Rick Ankiel— I know he’s a free agent after next season, but that might be enough time for us to get some of our outfield prospects up to speed.

It would be nice if we could get him and some other high-level prospect.

Of course it would be nice

because it’s asking way too much. Pretty much a pointless trade for both teams.

Really?

The Cards, obsessed with roles (read Three Nights in August) would get a great closer, and we would fill an outfield void for next year. I have no idea how the Cards are stacked for outfield depth, but there is a need on both sides.

Ankiel for Putz hurts the Cardinals

and is pointless for the Mariners unless, of course, you think the Mariners are going to compete next season.

As a simple fan, I would love to watch Ankiel for a year.

But yeah, it doesn’t make much sense for the future. Betting on him to give us a draft pick or two when he leaves would be quite a stretch. He just squeaked in as a Type B for his offseason.

I still find it anmazing that the Cards are shopping him

considering he’s LaRussa’s favorite son.

Yeah, he’s super talented and could be healthy andgood here a year, but then what?

Are we gonna sign Ben Sheets and make over the middle infield? It doesn’t work unless there a bunch of other retooling done.

I don't understand it either

I know we have outfielders coming out the ass in St. Louis, but which one of them are going to come up and be ready now? Duncan is a bust either way you look at it, Rasmus would need the better half of this year to be fully prepared after being injured most of last season. This leaves the Cards with Ludwick, Schumaker and Mather if they trade away Ankiel, which doesn’t sit well with me

From what I've read

Duncan’s injury is pretty serious and he can’t be counted on to play in the majors this year.

And Duncan is an outfielder

as much as Jeff Clement is an outfielder

Agreed

Just give us Ramus instead.

Give us Felix
Erik Bedard is really good.
Not any more
Shut your dirty whorish mouth Robert

go find a box to unpack

I know some boxes Robert will never unpack.
He's gonna get stuck?
They're encased in blister packaging.
I think this metaphor needs a little more work.
Metaphor?
You didn't use like or as
I don't think it needs either
It's not a simile
Go write a series preview jackass
Series Preview: Robert vs Blister Packaging
I almost impaled my self on a XBox packaging
How did you manage that?
Marlins Apparently Offered....

….Jeremy Hermida.

Presumably for one of our AA/AAA catchers. That’s not a horrible thought.

If the catcher the Marlins want isn't Clement, then hell yes I do that deal.

Marcel has him pegged for a .788 OPS, and Bill James has him down for .822…not to mention UZR had him at only 3, and +/ has him at +7 from 2006-2008, so it’s possible he’s at least an average fielder. I’d swap Moore or Johnson for him…maybe even throw in a lesser prospect, like a relief arm. Maybe give them Gaby Hernandez back or something.

Stupid internet formatting a strike I didn't want in there. It should read that UZR had him at only -3

And plus/minus has him at +7

.
Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald says the Ms and Rangers initiated the Hermida talks, and they didn’t get far.
That would have been pretty kind of Texas to give us a player from another team, though.
Dammit, I read to fast again.

I need a Taylor H rule.

.
Baker says the Marlins wanted catching prospect Adam Moore from the Ms in a Hermida deal.
I wonder if they'd jump for Johnson + some Thoroughly Mediocre RHP.
Adam Moore is going to be a very nice player or trading chip

At this point I think I’d rather hold onto him to see where Clement ends up.

Royals close to reacquiring Horacio Ramirez

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/royals/story/931290.html

The Royals plan to give Ramirez, a left-hander, an opportunity to win a spot in the rotation.
Yayyyy Ho-Ram. Now lets hope KC trades for Yuni to field all the balls that opposing hitters scorch off of Ramirez.
Trade Talks on JJ are starting to stall

Joyce was the only name that ever got me really excited anyway. Well, Joyce and Rasmus. But Rasmus sounded too good to be true from the beginning; if Rasmus name ever got mentioned in this context, I’m sure it was about removing St. Louis’s log jam.

Trading Rasmus for Peavy would be dumb

So I’m sure he’d be available for Putz.

Seriously, Rasmus = Adam Jones as far as the Cardinals are concerned. He’s not going anywhere for an injury reclamation project.

According to whom?
PI apparently.

I saw a story about it mentioned on Rotoworld earlier.

there's a lot of time between now and ST
Who mentioned Rasmus
You did, remember?
`

what?
`

Please delineate in terms I can understand
No thanks.

I’ll leave it for Jeff to get.

I get the joke, but I will not share it with him.
nooo

:(

Aww take some pity on the guy

Here’s a hint:

I understand derivatives, summation, elements, and science working

but I don’t understand how its supposed to be funny

try

d=m/v

So Matthew is calling me dense?
I thought he was saying "OH"
Os, Osmium highest density metal
What relevance does this have?

He wasn't serious

http://ussmariner.com/2008/07/27/jarrod-washburns-success-is-sustainable-and-he-should-command-a-high-price/

This is so confusing.
Offbeat comments in comment threads get taken seriously and eventually become rumours
I read that the Mariners have had preliminary discussions

about trading JJ Putz, Adrian Beltre, Jeff Clement, and Wlad Balentin for Ryan Braun and Bill Hall.

That's a weirdly fascinating trade
This would be very interesting

However, you still have Braun in the outfield, and he may as well have the same skillet for defensive skills as Raul

Raul at 25, yeah

But not Raul at 35

?

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2008/12/8/686861/winter-meetings-open-threa#10556653

SKillet!
No, I meant to put skillet
Spell check is a sexy but dangerous wench
Plus, your a dick
why don't you go fry some bacon in that skillet?

mmmm bacon.

Butter your BACON!

Bacon your Sausage!

Peace offering.

awwwww

Thought the differently colored head and arms make it look like it’s losing circulation

I find it more cute that way.

Plus it reminds me of Gir for some reason.

Better

What a horribly racist product.
But incredibly funny
As much as I think this may be crazy...

That may be giving up too much.

I don't think I'd pull the trigger on it
We'll be all the way there once Dave starts taking us to school

for our bad evaluations of completely made up trades.

God damn it would be easy to start

legitimatemlbtraderumors.com

With the LL machine behind me, it would spread as quickly as tRA

id rather start illegitimatetraderumors.com

that would spread WAY faster.

first rumor – Yankees trade A-Rod to the Padres for Peavy. There. A rumor.

No one will believe that
nah yankee fans are idiots.
You're missing the point.
You don't say.
I was being sarcastic.
We're all such pricks I can't even tell any more.
I heard the prospect was John Jay
I heard it was Pujols
Liar. They wanted to trade Ozzie Smith
No, still wrong

Bob Gibson

Bullshit the prospect is Tyler Greene

Those of us who are lovesick for Richie Sexson will be pleasantly surprised.

In other news, the Nationals have made Mark Teixeira an 8/$180 offer.

No possible way that could work out badly!

I <3 Jim Bowden
This is the ultimate test to see how crappy of a place Washington D.C.

Alright Stoneman's replacement GO GO GO
UPDATED 6:51 p.m. — Latest on Fuentes

Free-agent left-hander Brian Fuentes appears headed for a three-year, $33 million contract, major-league sources say, but the question is which club will give it to him.

The Cardinals might rather trade for the Mariners’ more inexpensive J.J. Putz, and the Brewers and Tigers also would figure to pass on that large of an investment in a closer.

J.J. Putz is a hot topic at winter meetings. (Otto Greule Jr / Getty Images)

That would leave the Angels, who likely would draw criticism if they paid Fuentes, 33, only $4 million less than the Mets awarded Francisco Rodriguez, 26, over three years.

Fuentes is less accomplished than Rodriguez, and the Angels would forfeit a first-round draft pick if they signed him. They could have kept Rodriguez without losing the pick.

Then again, Angels manager Mike Scioscia has always liked Fuentes, and the Angels tried to acquire him from the Rockies at the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

As for Putz, the Tigers and Cardinals want him in part because of his affordability. Putz will earn $5.5 million next season with a $9.1 million club option for 2010 that could increase to a maximum of $9.6 million if he meets all of his appearance-based incentives.
Ideal winter for us:

Angels sign Fuentes and Raul, trade for Michael Young.

I’d give up sex for the rest of 2008 if this happens.

You've already given up sex for the entire year.

2009 and 2010 as well, or so I’m told.

But Super Bowl XLV is going to mt sexmore so it will be worth it
Too easy
I throw up an alley-oop for the people here and these are the responses it ends up with?

Y’all are pathetic and need to go back to humor boot camp.

We're afraid of you.
Future hint:

I’m not so stupid as to unintentionally leave myself as such an easy target. However, if the best you can come up with is vocal filler or a put down that would make an 11-year-old cringe, don’t bother.

Still too frightened to try.
I'm afraid that you're misanthropic enough to do it just to ban people.
Speak for yourself.
Yes?, No it didn't, that's been a thread for three seasons so don't act like it wasn't coming.
Well, JI's finally gone insane.
Yeah that would suck.
21 days without sex is nothing

Ask Robert

He's becoming dangerously insane because of this with his trying to correlate the lack of sex with sports winning percentage

Haha Robert, you can't crash my computer
I never dreamed this avatar would be this useful
I am willing to triple the worth of Matthew's offer by throwing in a shiny nickle
So apparently JJ Putz ----> Mets
Didn't they just sign a closer?
Via Rosenthal

8:46 p.m. — Mets trying to land M’s Putz

The Mets are working to acquire a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez — and that setup man would be another closer from the American League West.

J.J. Putz could be headed to the Mets in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians, according to major-league sources.

Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first-base prospect Mike Carp would be in the deal, as would Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.

It is not yet clear which players are headed where.

Aaron Heilman. :|
