The Mets are working to acquire a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez — and that setup man would be another closer from the American League West.
J.J. Putz could be headed to the Mets in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians, according to major-league sources.
Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first-base prospect Mike Carp would be in the deal, as would Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
It is not yet clear which players are headed where.
Matthew's Addendum: Mike Carp is a name we've bandied about before as wanting from the Mets, back in good times when we thought Jarrod Washburn was to be no more. Obviously, we wouldn't know where the proposed deal sends which players and likely there would be other names involved, but the general sense right now is that Carp and Heilman would end up with us. I am nonplussed for the moment.
-----
Jeff's note: My read is that, were this to go down, we'd actually be landing Franklin Gutierrez as the centerpiece. And that would be absolutely a-ok with me. Gutierrez's offense could stand to improve, but the straight defensive improvement over Raul would seriously be on the order of like 35-40 runs. There are worse trades to make.
-----
Matthew's note to Jeff's note: Getting Franklin Gutierrez certainly makes more sense from a roster standpoint and would actually be the better haul. I certainly hope that's the deal, though I wouldn't mind getting Carp as well as he's an interesting enough 22-year-old LH 1B with patience
-----
Jeff's note to Matthew's note to Jeff's note: I can already feel myself getting too invested in what's probably going to be another rumor that doesn't go anywhere.
-----
Update from Rosenthal:
Under terms of the deal, the Mets would get Putz, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green from Seattle. The Mariners would receive reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets. They'd also get Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians and minor leaguers. The Indians would get reliever Joe Smith from the Mets and infielder Luis Valbuena from Seattle.
If the trade is completed, one problem for the Mets could be that Putz wants to remain a closer. Asked earlier in the day if Putz would embrace a setup role for another team, his agent Craig Landis said "no."
From the Mets' perspective, the deal would be Heilman and Smith for Putz. Chavez and Reed would be an exchange of backup outfielders, Smith and Green an exchange of right-handed groundball specialists.

Graham's note to Matthew's note to Jeff's note to Matthew's note to Jeff's note: Bill Bavasi?

Well... this is kind of unexpected.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Seems a little light.
P Brady - December 10, 2008
If we get Gutierrez
GO GO GO
JI - December 10, 2008
Why the fuck do the Mets need Putz?
hmmm
JI - December 10, 2008
They are going to split the saves oppitunities in order to maximize trade value for the two next winter
Robert - December 10, 2008
Odds are one of them gets hurt bad.
JI - December 10, 2008
I think the odds are better that both of them do.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
They're not
JI - December 10, 2008
Well J.J. was hurt for almost all of last season and K-Rod has always had one of the riskiest windups of all-time.
That screams potential major injury from both of them.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
And yet, you think the odds of A AND B somehow surpass the odds of A OR B?
Matthew - December 10, 2008
You bastard that was my comeback
JI - December 10, 2008
Is JJ even fully healed yet?
Didn’t we think he was at the beginning of the season? Heck, he may already have a serious injury.

Hmmmm.
If JJ has already suffered one and K-Rod suffers one during the season. JI said odds are one of them gets hurt bad during next season…. Does JJ’s injury count?
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
Stop ruining this thread.

I should have saved my preachy retort for this thread.

That's my thinking
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Is first base prospect Mike Carp any good?
JI - December 10, 2008
Mildly
Gutierrez would be the key.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I would like that much moreso than Heilman.
Matthew - December 10, 2008
That would be pointless
JI - December 10, 2008
Why would we trade for Heilman?
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Because it's nearly Christmas
and therefore time for us to be shit upon?
Matthew - December 10, 2008
He's a veteran relief pitcher.
That’s pretty much a rule for the Mariners. They have to get at least one veteran relief pitcher every offseason.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
Not anymore1
Robert - December 10, 2008
That's what my instincts told me.
Carp, Chavez, Heilman —→ Cleveland?
JI - December 10, 2008
Putz and K-Rod is a potentially redicolous back end of a bullpen.

kentroyals5 - December 10, 2008

APV - December 10, 2008
On Gutierrez:
+/-, UZR, and PMR all have him as being either the best or one of the best defensive right fielders in baseball, and that’s with 284 games of experience. His glove is phenomenal.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
213 of experience in RF
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008

JI - December 10, 2008
Could we trade him and not be royally boned?
JI - December 10, 2008
Frying pan for a glove
I’m going to stop using skillet as it’s often confused with ‘skillset’
Fuzz - December 10, 2008
With this I agree but let's take this one thing at a time
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Big picture big picture big picture
JI - December 10, 2008
Pictures are only allowed to be 250 pixels wide.
Matthew - December 10, 2008
Adding Gutierrez improves the big picture
I’ll worry about Wlad another time.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I can't help get antsy when were on the verge of something that doesn't suck.
JI - December 10, 2008
He also takes tons of pitches.
And yet rarely walks.
Matthew - December 10, 2008
Interestingly his contact rate improved quite a bit this year while his numbers declined
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
So we'd be buying low?
Go, Jack, go!
JY - December 10, 2008
Trying to understand Gutz’s offense is going to be a frustrating exercise. His swing has undergone major restructuring during his development and he struggles to maintain a consistent approach. At times he has major contact problems and a long swing, at other times he seems to have great control of the plate but a lack of power. He has power potential, as evidence by the monster HRs he occasionally hits, but he hasn’t been able to do it consistently.
APV - December 10, 2008
Won't Gutierez's already so-so offense
suffer from moving to Safeco?
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
You don't get Franklin Gutierrez for his bat
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
He can sorta hit homers
JI - December 10, 2008
22 in 800 ABs
meh.
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
A little bit
But he’s never really flashed plus power.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I'm gonna project 2007 out to 650 PAs
stick my fingers in my ears and call it good
JI - December 10, 2008
Sure, but it's still part of the total package.
There’s no Designated Fielder position.
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
How the fuck can he be a worse hitter than Reed?
JI - December 10, 2008
If he'd played last year in Safeco
he probably would have been.
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
2007 happened too
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Career OPS+
Reed 83
Gutierrez 86
They’re about even.
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
In career OPS+, yes
JI - December 10, 2008
Gutierrez's projected wOBA is a good 15 points higher than Reed's
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
The total package is that he's at least a league-average player and quite possibly more than that
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Yeah, he's not bad
But I’d rather have Joyce, assuming that option actually exists.
Rollo Tomasi - December 10, 2008
I'm guessing that ship may have sailed
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Is 'sunk' the more appropriate term if this deal includes Valbuena and Putz to get Guiterrez?
kentroyals5 - December 10, 2008
On the Mlbblogs site
they have the Mariners giving up Valbuena and Reed as possibilities in this deal too.
I’d hate to lose Valbuena as he’s one of maybe 3 hitters in the organisation with some plate discipline.
marinerdan - December 10, 2008
Reed can go somewhere and we can get one of those players back
JI - December 10, 2008
yeh I don't care about Reed

kentroyals5 - December 10, 2008
I like this a lot less if it Valbuena + Putz
for Gutierrez
Better throw in Lopez or betancourt and try to get back another shiny part.
JI - December 10, 2008
It's gonna turn into a 5-1 to get Guiterrez...I see it coming...
kentroyals5 - December 10, 2008
Bavasi's gone.
Now we have Z. Won’t happen anymore, right?!
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
They're just working on a deal that would include said players right?
Nothing is final yet….
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
Rosenthal now saying the Mets are trying or working on a deal for JJ, means a lot less than a "deal is close"
Scrupio - December 10, 2008
Yeah, he changed his language.
It used to read that the teams were close.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
Gutierrez, Heilman and Carp
I REALLY don’t like Heilman. I might actually like the deal better if he were not involved.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
That doesn't make sense
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Heilman is fine as long as you aren't paying him a metric assload of money
JI - December 10, 2008
I just really don't like Heilman
tait644 - December 10, 2008

JI - December 10, 2008
Well
He’s a one-pitch guy who always complains about not getting his shot, yet he’s never done anything to warrant getting said shot.
Plus he’s ugly…
tait644 - December 10, 2008
I don't see why you wouldn't want him in the bullpen.
JI - December 10, 2008
What's the point?
He doesn’t add anything.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
Not to us, but to Cleveland he's a good buy low gy
JI - December 10, 2008
He was an average to above-average reliever for years before 2008.
He wants to be a starter, though, so he might throw a fit.
Teej - December 10, 2008
Don't know if we'll get Heilman, do we?
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
I would imagine the deal would include Heilman, G, and Carp
UZR LOVES Gutierrez.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
So Cleveland would just get Chavez?
Seems like a bad deal for them. Shapiro wouldn’t do that.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
There must be some other players involved.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
I don't see any reason why Zduriencik would target Heilman

Apparently they offered 5/80 for Burnett.
If putting themselves on the line for 7 years at 23 per for an overweight pitcher with a ton of miles on his arm the last two years isn’t the most insane thing you’ve ever heard, the offer to Burnette might just beat it.

That actually isn't incredibly far-fetched

Nats Nats Nats
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
Hey, visitor from LGT here.
What do you guys think of Valbuena? Obviously he’s still really young, but what type of player do you see him developing into, like on a scale of 1 to 10 Asdrubals? Opinions seem a little divided at LGT right now, not sure what to make of him yet.
LGT33 - December 10, 2008
Luis Castillo with less speed
JI - December 10, 2008
http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2008/9/30/625014/september-wasn-t-a-total-w
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I’ll repost that over at LGT, thanks much.
fleerdon - December 10, 2008
Well...
In many organizations he may not be all that highly thought of. In ours, he’s about the only play that ever sees ball 4.
Right now he seems to have above average defense and singles/doubles power.
PLU Tim - December 10, 2008
Many thanks for the feedback. I hope you guys get a good return for Putz.
LGT33 - December 10, 2008
Heilman would be heading to Cleveland
According to the Newark StarLedger.
Slica - December 10, 2008
I like it less if we don't get a third player
and Heilman ain’t a bad guy to get
JI - December 10, 2008
Hey, fellas, stopping over from LGT:
Gutz might be the best defensive outfielder in the game, at any position. His bat is a total mystery — he has pretty great batspeed but struggles with breaking stuff. Wicked fast but not a fabulous SB threat. Can probably hold down a starting spot on his own with his glove, but it’s good to have a lefty to platoon him with. Seems like a good teammate, never heard any complaints.
Can anybody give me the ETA on Valbuena in the majors?
fleerdon - December 10, 2008
Early to mid 2008?
JI - December 10, 2008
Probably needs...
a full season in AAA.
PLU Tim - December 10, 2008
At least half of one
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
This thing could be huge:
Goose - December 10, 2008
Holy shit.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Rosenthal just updated his blog with this
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Would that mean no more Tuesdays with Sean Green?
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Moved to a new network.
Goose - December 10, 2008
Jeff, would you guest-post on the Mets bolg with new Tuesdays?
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
NO! TWSG must live on!
Benne - December 10, 2008
NO
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I'm so sorry :(
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Endy Chavez and Heilman HOLY SHIT
JI - December 10, 2008
Dammit.
brayden04 - December 10, 2008
SEAN GREEN NOOOOOO
JI - December 10, 2008
WTF?
Scrupio - December 10, 2008
Endy Chavez in left, Gutierrez in center, Ichiro! in right.
Holy fuck.
Goose - December 10, 2008
Is Endy good enough to make up for his bat?
Teej - December 10, 2008
He is
JI - December 10, 2008
It could be the most impotent offensive OF in the league
but damn, could they run some balls down.
tait644 - December 10, 2008
Nothing would ever fall in for a hit.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Chavez would presumably take over as the fourth OF because I think Zduriencik wants to give Wlad a full-time opportunity
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Not a bad option though
JI - December 10, 2008
Better than Willie..
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Late-inning Raul replacement . . .
Shit.

JI - December 10, 2008

seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Fuck this noise >:(
Just as TWSG was getting really good.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Can we have Smith instead of Heilman?
tait644 - December 10, 2008
So... what? We are lookin at
Heilman, Chavez, Carp, Gutierrez, Indian minor leagers for Putz, Reed, Green and Valbuena? Wow.. Z isn’t wasting time
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I don't think the Indian MiLs would be worth much
if they are only getting Smith and Valbuena
tait644 - December 10, 2008
Wait what
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
Good God this is fun when you have a semblance of confidence.
Teej - December 10, 2008
There's more!
PLU Tim - December 10, 2008
God dammit we're already thin on Kingdome ceiling tiles as is.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
The tile will be dropped on each Indians fan's head.
Teej - December 10, 2008
OH MY
Woodinville_12thMan - December 10, 2008
Why does everyone love Valbuena so much, he's not even a top 5
spect in a bad M’s system. The guy has never hit enough to be more than a league average MLB player down the road, at best. These guys are replaceable
DarkLou - December 10, 2008
I think at this point we're more pissed about Sean Green.
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
Well...
1) He’s left handed.
2) He’s plus with the glove.
3) He has a clue at the plate.
and 4) if second doesn’t work out, he’s capable of being a utility guy.
JY - December 10, 2008
He might be better than Yuni right now and he's set to be a good value at second base for a number of years
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I bet Zoinks won't stop with the outfield
JI - December 10, 2008
I haven't heard a whisper about re-arranging the middle infield
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I hadn't heard a whisper about having a +40 outfield either
JI - December 10, 2008
Am I the only one who thinks 'spect' is annoying?
I mean, you are taking out three letters. What is the time saved in typing prospect instead of spect? .05 seconds?
brayden04 - December 10, 2008
I thought it was a typo.
Yes, that’s annoying. I’m against any abbreviation that takes place on the wrong side of the word.
I will now go throw my ’za in the oven.
Teej - December 10, 2008
Haha
brayden04 - December 10, 2008
League average guys who play for free aren't easily replaceable.
I’m not quite as high on him as others, but he’s extremely nice to have around, if his glove really is as good as it has looked.
Teej - December 10, 2008
Holy shit
Why tonight. I’m still at work and instead of working I’m watching this god damn rumor
Scruffy Lefty - December 10, 2008
Hey me too!!
Makes work MUCH more entertaining.
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I have to head to work in 2 hours.
Come on Z, hurry up and get this done or kill it.
Goose - December 10, 2008
This seems very possible to fall apart..
SOOO many moving parts.
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I was really looking forward to playing video games tonight.
My life is tough.
Teej - December 10, 2008
WSU / Gonzaga!
JI - December 10, 2008
Not on down here. Sucks.
Teej - December 10, 2008
Don't even need cable here
JI - December 10, 2008
I have far too much work to do for this to carry on much longer
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Seconded.
JY - December 10, 2008
If you mod me

JI - December 10, 2008
Working at home is unhealthy.
Teej - December 10, 2008
I was playing Red Alert 3 when I got a text from a friend.
So much for that.
Goose - December 10, 2008
Let me get this straight
The Indians are giving up Gutierrez, and minor leaguers for Joe Smith and Valbuena?
Don’t expect much from the minor leaguers. And does Shapiro put A. Cabrera at SS?
tait644 - December 10, 2008
Unless Peralta’s moving to Third, no
Gradyforpresident - December 10, 2008
That's actually been discussed
tait644 - December 10, 2008
He’s playing there in winter ball.
Voltaire - December 10, 2008
poor andy
Gradyforpresident - December 10, 2008
Anyone notice a potentially HUGE problem here?
Sean Green AND Putz gone = Morrow in the bullpen chances double.
Slica - December 10, 2008
Especially if we are getting Heilman who is demanding a trade so that he can start
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I’ve seen a report that put Heilman with the Tribe. Any more news on this?
Voltaire - December 10, 2008
That was from the Newark Ledger reporter.
But there have been too many varying reports to have an idea of whats really happening.
Slica - December 10, 2008
Not true
Heilman would probably close
JI - December 10, 2008
Sucks for him
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
He's Aaron Heilman
If he doesn’t like it he can fuck himself
JI - December 10, 2008
We were getting Heilman before Green's name was inputted into the equation.
Plus he doesn’t even want to. Very confusing trade. I hatre speculation!
Slica - December 10, 2008
Green is a ROOGY
it’s not like he’s really worth anything more than comic relief
JI - December 10, 2008
While he may replaceable...for now its still 2 people out of our pen.
Who knows what plans are for Heilman.
Slica - December 10, 2008
I can't see any way in the world he starts
If we keep him
JI - December 10, 2008
We can have Batista close!
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
Yes, that is bad.
But Heilman could theoretically relieve and if we’re getting both Gutierrez and Chavez, we might be trading one of them or one of our outfielders in the minors for more relief help.
JY - December 10, 2008
Plus there's a decent chance Heilman > Putz next year
JI - December 10, 2008
Plus we could be picking up an arm in the Rule 5 anyway.
One that doesn’t suck for a change.
JY - December 10, 2008
Corco?
Robert - December 10, 2008
YES
with Sean Green out of the way Roy Corcoran can really take his awesomeness to the next level
Simon Phoenix - December 10, 2008
Wednesdays with Roy Corcoran just doesn't have the same buzz.

Voltaire - December 10, 2008
That last bit is news to me
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Honestly..
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Wishful thinking perhaps.
Maybe I hold out hope that the new administration looks at present middle infield duo and sees two former top prospects who still have potential despite erratic play.
JY - December 10, 2008
I dunno.. I have read a couple places about some other unnamed minor leaguers coming our way
What a fun night!
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
For now.... *Knock on wood*
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
True dat
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008

seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
There are two things wrong there.

seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008

Slica - December 10, 2008

Not sure of the dollar amount, though.
Teej - December 10, 2008
I have a bad feeling about this deal.
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008

OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
Is cautious optimism ok?
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
I wonder if this means we're more likely to sign Fields
BrettJMiller - December 10, 2008
That's an interesting aside..
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Another good point.
That would alleviate the bullpen panic. I believe Z was supposed to be talking to Boras about it sometime soon.
JY - December 10, 2008
Well let's see. If we sign Fields, this is how our pen looks:
Fields
Heilman
Corcoran
Jimenez
Lowe
Batista
Not terrible.
BrettJMiller - December 10, 2008
I'd revise that.
Add in a Rule 5 kid, maybe subtract Jimenez, or replace him with Thomas.
JY - December 10, 2008
Rosenthal
Goose - December 10, 2008
wee?
Scruffy Lefty - December 10, 2008
Beat me to it..
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
so did we do good?
Scruffy Lefty - December 10, 2008
Please someone tell me if we did good or not.
I’m too conditioned to expect awful things from trades.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
And I'm tired
Scruffy Lefty - December 10, 2008
...It's done?
BrianL - December 10, 2008
And USSM hasn't crashed yet.
JY - December 10, 2008
Give it a minute or two.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Yay?
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
There is some confusion as to whether Chavez goes to Cleveland or to the m's
JI - December 10, 2008
I don't know how to feel.
also RIP Tuesdays with Sean Green.
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
Just when it started to get great!
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Tuesdays without Sean Green ought to be interesting.
Man: …
Man: You there Sean?
Man: …
Man: :(
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
I hear you...
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
There would be three pauses.
He’s not waiting long enough.
JY - December 10, 2008
Yeah, you're right. :-\
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
They're the Mitch Hedberg of LL posts.
ningwers - December 10, 2008
I'm okay with it ending there.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
It's been fun.
krb - December 10, 2008
Goodbye, Sean :(
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Was this posted before? Because thats awesogreat.
Slica - December 10, 2008
Yeah it was posted in the very last TWSG :(
BrianL - December 10, 2008
If we end up with Endy when the dust clears
This is a massively good deal for us.
JI - December 10, 2008
Late inning defense of Endy, Gutz and Ichiro?
Holy crap
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Washburn's trade value goes through the roof.
JY - December 10, 2008
Crap simulpost.
Eyebrows - December 10, 2008
Endy=Reed
they are basically the defensive player
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
Endy is better
no massive platoon split IIRC
JI - December 10, 2008
Endy is way better than Reed.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
The Cardinals are my new Mariners!

JI - December 10, 2008
K-Rod,Putz,Green is an absolutely insane bullpen.
Goose - December 10, 2008
it'll be a shock to the Metses Fans
Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
msb - December 10, 2008
They'll still lose the division next year in the last week of the season.
Somehow.
Goose - December 10, 2008
Provided JJ doesn't flip a tizzy
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
He could flip a tizzy and still pitch well
Holy fuck did his free agent prospects just get fucked over. I fhe pitches well he’ll be two years removed from the job.
JI - December 10, 2008
Angry JJ should be enjoyable to watch
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.
Sorry JJ.
Goose - December 10, 2008
How does Gutierrez compare to say, Adam Jones?
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
In the near term, favorably
JI - December 10, 2008
Worse bat, better glove, similar overall value right now
AJ has higher upside.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Way to be more specific
JI - December 10, 2008
Anyone else think that Z is going this route, at least in part,
to make his pitchers look better? Maybe he can get something for Washburn when he’s sporting a 3 ERA in June.
Eyebrows - December 10, 2008
I don't have a doubt in my mind.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
if wash has a 3.00 ERA in june......
Woodinville_12thMan - December 10, 2008
Is Gutierrez basically a .750 OPS guy with elite defense?
If Heilman can bounce back to pre 08 form, he has value
DarkLou - December 10, 2008
Dave did a good piece at Fangraphs.
Seems like Heilmann’s decline came when he tried to add a third pitch.
Teej - December 10, 2008
So does this basically end our offseason?
Beltre talks seem to have cooled off as of late – maybe that’s because of the Putz talk though?
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
We have a middle infield to fix
JI - December 10, 2008
Shortstop*
Slica - December 10, 2008
Silva, Batista, and Washburn
still need to be dumped
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
One of these things has a snowballs chance in Satan't butthole of happening.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
In the span of a week
We went from Raul being the weak link in the OF to Ichiro.
Robert - December 10, 2008
Trade the bum.
JY - December 10, 2008
Rec'd
JI - December 10, 2008
My first baseball related rec :)
Robert - December 10, 2008
Dooooooown gooooooes USSM
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Goodbye JJ
I’ll miss you… no more AC/DC at M’s games now either…
My heart has been thunderstruck… =(
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
That's the feeling keeping me from enjoying this influx of young cheap decent talent.
Im gonna miss JJ, alot.
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
Apparently Branyan listens to AC/DC.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
Hell’s Bells right? now that could be interesting but Thunder drowns out the sounds of bells…
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
BOOM goes USSM.
Faux - December 10, 2008
THUNDER!
Goose - December 10, 2008

Slica - December 10, 2008
Late
Scrupio - December 10, 2008
This is another Mariner autograph of mine to be traded
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
They'll never do it to Edgar
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
I wonder what team needs a new hitting coach
Robert - December 10, 2008
We do...
I don’t want this new guy.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
What do you have against Cockrell?
JLC - December 10, 2008
I don't trust new guys.
Since Perry left how many new guys have we had as hitting coach? Isn’t Pentland the only one to remain here for more than one season?
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
So you would prefer to bring Pentland back?
JLC - December 10, 2008
makes him question his nascent sexuality
Bearskin Rugburn - December 10, 2008
They did it to Fernando Vina and Josh Brown
JI - December 10, 2008
I have a suicide pact with mine.
Robert - December 10, 2008
Same here.
Slica - December 10, 2008
I'm a little surprised that Cleveland is doing this deal
It seems like they are getting the worse return.
Edgar for Pres - December 10, 2008
We have a glut of AAAA OF’ers. With the addition of Brantley and La Porta (in the CC trade), we really needed to get SOMETHING out of one of them.
Franky G has had plenty of chances. We will dearly miss is amazing defense .. but the bat just hasn’t caught up.
You guys will see it. He will have a three game stretch where the ball FLIES off his bat and you will begin to think he could be a .280 25 homer guy … but then he will go into an inexplicable 0-27 slump over the next two weeks. I’m not exaggerating either, he will post a couple 0 fer 20+ AB slides in a season. But his defense is THAT good that you almost forgive him for it.
Toxicadam - December 10, 2008
That will be a welcome sight after the Ibanez debacles..
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
If his defense is that good I will.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
Josh Fields?
did we ever end up signing him?
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
Not yet...
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
No, but Jack's talking to Boras.
JY - December 10, 2008
Not yet
still have until June.
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
this deal...
makes signing him a priority
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
Not really
I rather take the pick, and dumpster dive for a closer next.
Robert - December 10, 2008
Yup.
This doesn’t change the fact that a draft pick is more important to us than a reliever.
Teej - December 10, 2008
No it doesn't because shitty teams don't need bullpens.
Graham MacAree - December 10, 2008
So Putz doesn't get to stay as a Mariner or go to his hometown of Detroit.
Whoops!
ThundaPC - December 10, 2008
Or be a closer.
JLC - December 10, 2008
Yeah... this is a shitty day for J.J. :-(
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Or Close.
Oh dear.
ThundaPC - December 10, 2008
Late.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
At least he is on a winning team?
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
That is going to be a fun clubhouse.
ThundaPC - December 10, 2008
Thank goodness for small favors.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
Hahaha
Eyebrows - December 10, 2008
Oh you silly person, Wahoo2009.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Riiiiight
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
So LGT is kinda stupid...
JI - December 10, 2008
To be fair
that’s from MLBtraderumors.
Eyebrows - December 10, 2008
They called the Joyce for whoever deal a steal for the tigers.
And a potential Hamilton-Volqeuz deal
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
Sounds like the type of person that circles the box instead of shading the box in on a Scantron.
JLC - December 10, 2008
That's assuming they don't just eat the Scantron first.
ningwers - December 10, 2008
Pravda
JY - December 10, 2008
Another outlet saying no additional prospects.. Somewhat curious
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
It did seem a little out of place for the Indians to give up all that though.
Eyebrows - December 10, 2008
Eh. Typically the PTBNL-type prospects that get thrown in on deals aren't really known (actually PTBNLs) or aren't really specified until it becomes official.
JLC - December 10, 2008
ESPN News reported extra prospects.
Teej - December 10, 2008
Announcement expected at 9:30pm
Per Baker.
ThundaPC - December 10, 2008
GU destroyed WSU tonight and this trade caused me to miss most of it
JI - December 10, 2008
Close until blown out in the second half
Scrupio - December 10, 2008
I had the tv on, it was ~tied
indulged myself here for a few minutes, looked up and they had a 30 point lead.
JI - December 10, 2008
WSU's great defense....
just got absolutely crushed by the Zags in the first 10 minutes of the second half. This game went from close to a blowout in about 5 minutes.
Zags are really really really good.
PLU Tim - December 10, 2008
Hooray for defense!
This’ll really help out Silva and Washburn, no?
Dewey N - December 10, 2008
Washburn especially
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Less Silva. This outfield defense would make Jeff Weaver look awesome though.
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
Remember Paul Abbot / John Halama?
Yeah, they were good with a Winn,Cameron,Ichiro OF
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Winn wasn't here yet.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
Guh... You get my point. Flyballers heart great OFs
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Franklin makes the point just as well.
I love this a lot.
Aaron Campeau - December 10, 2008
Very cool having a trade that I am not up in arms about
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
And I misspelled Abbott.. I'm losin it.
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Nothing would help Silva.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
maybe some
amphetamines?
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
Yay Dave said what I said
Dewey N - December 10, 2008
This leaves a weird feeling in my stomach.
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
yuck
bon_ton - December 10, 2008
No more JJ Landing Strip night :(
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
Learning to hate him is going to be strange
Jeff Sullivan - December 10, 2008
Felix hit a grand slam off the ace of his rotation.
RafaelCarmona22 - December 10, 2008
Well at least he went to the Mets and not Cleveland so we won't see him shutting down the Mariners much.
Coach Owens - December 10, 2008
I kind of want him to be "Not quite right" J.J. now
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I'm gonna feel bad watching him slouching in the dugout when his team blows a 4 game division lead in the final weekend of the year.
Goose - December 10, 2008
Funny thing is, if he bounces back, he's better than K-Rod.
I don’t expect him to repeat 2007 or anything, but if he stops walking guys . . .
Teej - December 10, 2008
If he finds that splitfinger...
Lord have mercy on K-rods soul…
Slurvey - December 10, 2008
Than don't
Robert - December 10, 2008

Putz in!
Game not quite Over.
ThundaPC - December 10, 2008
ah, Puckett.
he was “enamored” when he heard the Ms might get Ankiel for JJ. he still is obsessing about Gutierrez’ numbers, but at least acknowledges the Ms need bodies.
He’s a Professional Baseball Reporter.
msb - December 10, 2008
Still not as awful as Mitch in the Goddamn Morning.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
at least Mitch doesn't pretend to know anything about the Ms.
msb - December 10, 2008
speaking of crap baseball reporting
KIRO’s Bill Swartz amazingly bad blogging from the winter meetings. Man they better sign Drayer soon.
ooh … just in per Elise— journeyman outfielders at best, a struggling reliever which is not as good as what you gave up in Green, and you gotta hope Carp improves
msb - December 10, 2008
Figures all the mainstream personalities hate this trade.
BrianL - December 10, 2008
Makes me like it even more
patsfan - December 10, 2008
So to recap
We have a barely over league minimum 1B platoon for 09 with a solid prospect waiting for 10. We have two great OF gloves added. We’ve lost a closer coming off a poor season, a 2B prospect, and a ROOGY. I’d say B/B+.
Bearskin Rugburn - December 10, 2008
Reading the comments on Baker's blog is hilarious
You’d think it was the Soriano – Ramirez trade all over
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
Bryan LaHair is fucked.
BrianL - December 10, 2008

Bearskin Rugburn - December 10, 2008

Akin to Baker blog commenters?
seattlesundevil - December 10, 2008
I haven't been brave enough to go over there.
lessee:
this is the continuation of all the bad trades since Varitek….
he had the opportunity to bring in a power hitter in Ankiel and failed….
we are STILL bottom-feeding…. 1976 all over again, a pretty feild and some jive, no-name ball-players
msb - December 10, 2008
So we might as well not exist?
Mariner John - December 10, 2008
This trade is going to be ridiculed by local writers and fans, I think.
Teej - December 10, 2008
So the extra minor leagues all seem to be pretty junk
Although I’m thrilled to have Maikel Cleto. Finally, we have what we need to compete with the Angels.
Bearskin Rugburn - December 10, 2008
Where are those names?
HARRYP09 - December 10, 2008
