Everything okay? Anyone hurt?
This thread's going up in relief of Trei's thread below. Post your comments and questions about the new platform in here. While everyone's aware of the loading time issue, and it's going to be addressed by the developers, for the time being there's no sense in hanging out in a slow thread if you don't have to.
Me, I can't thank Trei and the guys enough for being so accommodating and taking our concerns to heart. I should also thank Graham for being so terrifying. Now that we have options to ignore avatars and make the screen wider, it's a lot easier to focus on the neat aspects of the new platform instead of spending all our time bitching about the annoying parts. I don't think it'll take long to get used to this at all, and I do believe we're better off now than we were last week.
Thanks to the devs for working on this literally around the clock, and thanks to you guys for not flipping a tizzy. One beer thread and everyone'll be comfortable all over again.

I do my best.

All of my tizzies are currently upright,
but are ready to be flipped at a moments notice if need be. Be warned
DCMariner - March 26, 2008
Maybe I'm blinded by the shiny new layout
but I can't figure out where the rss feed is for the fanposts.
timc - March 26, 2008
we don't have it displayed anywhere yet, but soon will
for now here is the URL:
http://www.lookoutlanding.com/rss/fanposts
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
thanks
I can sleep easy tonight
timc - March 26, 2008
Random and not very important
But clicking on a player's name on the roster just brings you to a pretty boring blank page. Can we edit this (if we can, I have no idea how)? It would be cool to mention player nicknames, community projections, and all of that.
Just some local flavour.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
any stories, fanposts and fanshots
that are associated with that player will be displayed on the page
when you create a new one of those, just type the name of the player into the field that says 'type player name here' and an auto-complete box will drop down where you can select the player you want your post to be associated with.
same goes for teams and games (using the attach event tool)
we'd like to add tools for y'all to easily add other information, but we're not quite there yet.
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Brilliant, thank you
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Yeah with these template fixes
I think I should be able to adjust and be happy with this within a week.
Thanks SBNDevs
Corco - March 26, 2008
Reading about a beer thread
made me think of something I recently tried for the first time. Anderson Valley Brewing Company. It was about $4 a bottle for a 22 or 24oz at a Beaverton, OR Hagen for the Oatmeal Stout and it was delicious.
I also realized that I'd rather buy one $7 24oz beer instead of a $7 6 pack. I don't know if it is an age or parent thing or what. I guess I'm not interested in getting wasted, but a little buzz with good flavor is what I like now.
Jed MC - March 26, 2008
I like flavor. And getting wasted
Which is why the perfect combination consecutive liter mugs - last time it was Newcastle followed by Blue Moon.
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
I don't get wasted because I have a pregnant wife who doesn't drive
and a 3 year old. Too much responsibility ... but your idea does sound intriguing.
Jed MC - March 26, 2008
Thank you
although it's hard to take credit for originality - I'm sure someone before me thought of the idea of consuming large quantities of beer and getting trashed.
Also, I'm 22 and like to pretend I'm still in college, so uh... not so much responsibility =)
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
How do I
embed a youtube video... or is that no longer an option?
johnbai - March 26, 2008
currently these are not allowed in comments while we try to improve performance in long threads
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
But it will comeback?
right? please god tell me its going to comeback
Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008
Oh my god
I can't live without your in-season weekly video previews!
Field Gulls will never be the same :(
BrianL - March 26, 2008
By the way, I'll re-state this:
for those of you who hate the term "FanPosts", keep in mind that we've grown accustomed to terms as silly as "Diaries", "Blog", and "Fantasy" baseball.
You'll get used to it in no time.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
I can stay pissed off for a long time if I have to
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
FanPosts is MuchStupider
than "Diaries" EverWas.
pdb - March 26, 2008
Here's the thing
Does the name really matter? I mean, yeah, it's kind of silly, but I come here for the content, not the fantastically named site components
Sportszilla - March 26, 2008
Yes
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Has anyone ever pointed out to you that your initials spell the word "gym"?
If not, let me be the first
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
One of my goals in life
Is to donate £1M to college on the condition that they name the building next to the gym the GYM building.
I hope it confuses people.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
As long as it's the engineering building
I think it would be funny for the ballers to head to the GYM building and instead of courts, find large, colorful posters about subjects like drag calculations at variable Mach #s/Reynolds#s and such.
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
Sure, but
Wouldn't it be even better to have them as far apart as possible? Not only do they get sucked into the world of engineering, when they realize their dumb mistake they have to walk all the way across campus to get to the gym building...
thejew4u - March 26, 2008
But it would also be funny when the engineers dragged their laptops to the gym
oh wait... I actually used to do that...
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
Gym?
What's a gym? Oh... a gym.
Wilder. - March 26, 2008
Fan Posts is fine
But Fan Shots seems kinda lame
johnbai - March 26, 2008
Agreed.
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
Eh. New format is okay.
That said, I think the transition has given me back spasms.
BrianL - March 26, 2008
Nice to see all the managers added below
but only Graham has his email listed there. Way to be fearless Graham, that's the backbone of leadership!
johnbai - March 26, 2008

As soon as I find a way to turn on widescreen I'll be pretty happy.

Ehhhh
Skeptical face.
BHP - March 26, 2008
LL 2.0
I would also like to thnk Trei and the gang for hanging out and checking out our feedback.
Now that I've played with it a little while I just wanted to comment on a few things.
Auto-Refresh: Man, this rocks. Being able to see comments without having to manually refresh all the time is an awesome change of pace and provides a different dynamic to game threads which are basically like chat rooms anyhow. Also good for hot topics. I've really gotten used to the 'z' command to check out new comments.
Also, nice to see new comments pop up as I'm preparing my posts. There's a big difference between seeing what is said at the time and seeing what is being said as it happens.
Mandatory Preview: I've talked about it a few times but honestly, just about any post that's longer than a few words I use Preview anyway and I ALWAYS use it when I post a picture or a link. On that front, this new system is a massive upgrade. For me, making previews optional would only be a marginal upgrade. I'm okay with this.
FanPosts: I don't really care. "Diaries" are no better than "FanPosts" to me. Don't bother me none. Next.
Auto-Refresh rate: Developers currently set this to 20 seconds. So far so good. Works great on non-game threads. I'll see how good this is on the opening day game thread with TEX vs. SEA. I still think everyone is better off with 10 seconds unless it bogs down the system but I'll see how it does myself first.
I'll probably have thoughts of the rest of the stuff as I use it more.
ThundaPC - March 26, 2008
I want to say this again because I think it's important:
When you link to a comment or subthread, instead of opening by itself, it opens and loads the entire thread before moving to the right comment.
We link to comments like this a lot, and having to load an entire game thread just to see 5 words of Robert being really angry is going to be a pain in the ass.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Agreed.
Without this a lot of our discussion will be hampered.
Also, lack of embedded videos = not as much fun. Over at Field Gulls it's going to be extremely hard to do the weekly video previews. I know that doesn't pertain to this site, but it's still an annoyance.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2008
Since I do the video previews
I may drink myself into a coma because of this
But the new comment thingy in the bottom of the screen is pretty cool
Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008
So far, not bad
It feels slicker and smoother. The comments handling - autorefresh, and the keyboard shortcuts - is really nice.
I actually don't mind the yellow highlighting of new comments. It's not really a screaming yellow, it's more of a soft post-it yellow, which is pretty typical for "alert" messages. Anything darker than the yellow might make the text hard to read unless you invert the text, which might be pretty annoying.
It's also nice that I've done all of one Dia ... I mean, FanPost, and yet my login was reserved.
Graham - nice avatar choice.
Chris Hafner - March 26, 2008
Since we can ignore avatars
am I allowed to upload one now? I have avatars turned off, but I really don't like the default one on my profile page and I'd like to change it.
Incidentally, I ask permission because when I rejoined the blog there was a fairly strong warning about using them...not that it seems to have stopped some people. >_>;
TheOptimist - March 26, 2008
At the risk of incurring Jeff's fury ...
From what I read in the other thread, the fact that readers can opt out of seeing them makes uploading one okay. Or at least so it seems. Like you, I hated the one on my profile page.
Chris Hafner - March 26, 2008
But ...
Even if this is true, I call for immediate beheading, incineration, and defenstration (all at once?) for anybody who uses an animated avatar.
Chris Hafner - March 26, 2008
I have no problems with that.
TheOptimist - March 26, 2008
One more thing about FanShots...
I notice that I can post an img URL, but I can't post a link to the original. I upload a lot to Flickr these days, and I'd like to just keep files managed there, but according to the Flickr TOS, I need to be able to link back to the original. I s'pose I could put the link in the description, but it'd be nice if the IMG URL field allowed for limited HTML (i.e. A HREF).
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
I use flickr all the time too
And I didn't even know that was in the TOS. What they don't know won't hurt 'em...
chaney - March 26, 2008
No 300c limit on diaries, WOOOOOOOO!
JI - March 26, 2008
that's a bug, not a feature
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008

PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
I'm not sure that works anymore
you'll need to adjust that entry accordingly
JI - March 26, 2008

several dozen people. :P
TheOptimist - March 26, 2008

Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008

PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
I hate picketing, I just don't know how to show it.

BrettJMiller - March 26, 2008
Question
Can you claim two accounts from the old format, and then merge them into one account on the new one?
JI - March 26, 2008
yes
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
From the same blog?
If so this is going to be helpful to those users who didn't realize that putting three capital Ks in the screenname was a poor decision
JI - March 26, 2008
yes, BUT
everytime you claim another old blog account it's going to overwrite the information in your LL blog membership box on your profile. so if you do plan to do this, you should claim your "main" account last. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you really, really want to claim all those other comments and diaries.
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
I claimed two accounts from old LL
didn't seem to effect anything.
Matthew - March 26, 2008
I know who you are!!
*intense spooky horror move stare*
BrettJMiller - March 26, 2008
Weird back arrow behavior
If I am on the page, watching comments come in, click on somebody's profile, then click "back" to come back to the comment thread, the page I come back to is an older version of the page I left.
In other words, the comments I'd previously seen flood in are missing when I come back. Then they show up again as new a little while later.
I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.12 on XP SP2.
Chris Hafner - March 26, 2008
I just did the same thing
but when I came back, comments that were new, or yellow, were just white now. I'm opting to use the right click "open in a new tab" feature if I want to open someone's avatar from now on.
johnbai - March 26, 2008
Yep, not a big deal ...
Just wanted to let people know.
Chris Hafner - March 26, 2008
If you're using Firefox (sounds like you are)
you can just click down on your mouse's scroll wheel and it automatically opens whatever you're clicking on in a new tab.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2008
Hey, that works in Explorer too!
Thank god Microsoft steals every good idea out there!
johnbai - March 26, 2008
Or, with no wheel
click the left and right buttons simultaneously, in Firefox or IE
david h - March 26, 2008
Command-click, too
Or for you Windows slaves, ctrl-click...
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
yeah I had this happen too
though it's not really that big of a deal. I can always just tab open someone's profile, rather than navigating away from the current page.
Eyebrows - March 26, 2008
and I fail at the reply button
this was re: Weird back arrow behavior
Eyebrows - March 26, 2008
I'm not going to lie
This whole blog system is pretty impressive
Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008
but only if you fix the embed problem
Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008
Sweet!
I love this new uploading of comments! Is this AJAX?
(FYI: I know almost nothing about programming)
Wilder. - March 26, 2008
This isn't AJAX, it's Iowa
pdb - March 26, 2008
IOWA IS AWESOME
THEREFORE AJAX IS AWESOME
Corco - March 26, 2008
I hear Iowa's roads
all lead directly to Michigan.
pdb - March 26, 2008
Iowa, huh?
Never heard of it. What is the difference?
Wilder. - March 26, 2008
Whoops!
The site may have changed, but old habits haven't.
Wilder. - March 26, 2008
the difference is
one's a programming language and another's a Midwestern state. It was a Field of Dreams reference.
pdb - March 26, 2008
See, I told you I know nothing about programming.
Can you say ignorant and gullible?
Wilder. - March 26, 2008
This is kinda nitpicky, but at the top
where it shows the number of comments, it doesn't auto update with the comments - I have to manually refresh to see how many comments are actually in the thread.
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
I was just noticing the same thing
pdb - March 26, 2008
Banner ads
This is a lingering problem from the old site, and I thought it went away with the new upload, but apparently not: it just took a while to show up.
When I'm on my work browser (IE 6.0), LL will randomly crash my browser while loading a page. When this first happened, I originally pegged the problem as a bad script in one of the ads, Jeff originally assumed it was an external poll that had been posted, but it's actually continued since then, to where I stopped loading this blog at work because re-opening my browser and re-logging into things was so annoying. This only happens on IE 6.0. I've managed to get far enough this time to load the main page and post this comment, but I'd be that another 4-5 page loads and it'll happen again.
And now, here it is again. Perhaps, among the other tasks, someone can look into the flash ads and see which of the ads would cause such a thing.
Gomez - March 26, 2008
New FanPosts are also hard to spot.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2008
Yeah, they need a highlight too
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
I think this was brought up in the other thread
but I'll make sure we've got a feature request ticket logged for it
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
I'm already a fan of the new layout.
Thank god the development team has fixed a lot of the annoying bugs.
Just a few more tweaks and we'll have ourselves a nice little place here.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - March 26, 2008
Now that I haven't pitched a fit, I want a pony.
Is there a way to build the comment section so that clicking on the new comment count ("4 new" or whatever the number happens to be) on the main page takes you to the first new comment, instead of to the first comment in the thread?
By the way, Trei, I really, really am impressed with the transition and how it's been handled - if I could only get the wide view to persist I'd be a happy bastard indeed.
pdb - March 26, 2008
we've heard that request before
and I personally like the idea too - would be super cool. I'll log a feature request ticket for that.
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
oh, and
could you make the "new" behavior consistent between FanShots and MainPosts - currently you can't click on "(x) new" in main page posts at all, where clicking on "(x) new" in the FanShots takes you to the first comment.
pdb - March 26, 2008
we're aware of this one, and it'll be changed soon
thanks for pointing it out
Ryan Gantz - March 26, 2008
So far so good, from my standpoint
I had a bit of a problem when registering, it was my own fault, and Trei and the guys got to it lightening fast and fixed it for me.
First impressions are important to me. I didn't think anything would take away the bitter taste of this new layout but my first impression of Trei and his crew has more than done that.
Excited to see how this thing develops!
CKremer - March 26, 2008
This really blows a lot less than I thought it would
JI - March 26, 2008
Dammit.
I just hit "c" on another site, expecting it to take me to the next comment...
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
why do you visit other sites?
leaving the warm embrace of LL for the outside world scares me.

Baseball isn't my only drug...
I tried to wean myself off baseball by using photography, but that didn't work so well. Now I'm freebasing both of them together...
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
yeah me too...
oh, wait... photography... nevermind, i thought you said something else
thenatural - March 26, 2008

Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
sorry guys
i know this is going to ruin your lives forever, but i will not longer be known as 'Scruffy Righty' due to the whole universial ID thingy.
it was a fun ride. this is my new name. and because i can just visit you guys from a drop down menu under my name now, i might visit more often because i don't actually have to type www.lookoutlanding.com in my address bar anymore. it's just a simple click away.

todd wellemeyer sucks
the bullpen will pitch more innings than wellemeyer will in 75% of his starts.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
He averaged less than 5 innings a start
actually, it could be the worst roation in Baseball.

stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Let's see
Wainwirght, Loshe, then three of (Thompson/Wellemeyer/Mulder/Joelle/Clement)
Allegedly Reyes finally won a spot, but I won't believe it till I see it-- and if true it won't hold up against TRL's massive ADD problems.
JI - March 26, 2008
wet dream about this for a second though
end of the year rotation
1. vintage carpenter
2. vintage mulder
3. vintage wainwright
4. vintage clement
5. vintage reyes
that would rival the best rotations in baseball.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
That seems perfectly reasonable
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
hahahaha
nothing against Larry because he's pretty good, but you need a second blog to run (or at least co-write for, comment at)
JI - March 26, 2008
huh?
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Many would not take that as sarcasm.

nothing against Larry because he's pretty good, but you need a second blog to run (or at least co-write for, comment at)

stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
VEB lacks the dry sarcasm, and heavy pessimism that I am so accustomed to.
also, as a general rule, they don't like to take pleasure in other people's misfortune either. It's a real in-between-hop.
JI - March 26, 2008
yeah
VEB is kinda a classy place.
i wish sometimes people would just lay back and let us cuss and make fun of people. but the second you do that the whole community gets on your ass.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
yes
also I hate explaining why Anthony Reyes wasn't nearly as bad as everybody thinks, why ERA is useless, and why it is extremely unlikely that he'll repeatt a 1.030 OPS with runners on...
JI - March 26, 2008
They wouldn't last two seconds over here.
Even if I wasn't awake.
The replies stop threading properly what.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
yeah they would.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
wtf?
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008

Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008

stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
What's happening? Why aren't the replies threading?
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
This needs to be fixed.
I predicted this would be a problem when they went to a fixed-width layout.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
We'll find a fix of some sort
There can't be endless indention, so we have to stop somewhere. The current limit is what we had set before we introduced the wide layout.
How do y'all think it should behave when you get down into 20 reply territory?
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
The old system worked great.
Conversations
died out only
when replies
became
impossible
to read due
to them being
strung out like
this.
Or
like
this,
which
was
a
sort
of
organic
limit.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
what Evan said
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
I wish they'd flip him to Seattle...
For Baek +
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
Reyes? What would we do with him?
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
kill em
and i dont' like this lack of threading properly.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
we stop threading at a certain point
that's what you're seeing
we may need to tweak this for the wider layout
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
that would be appreciated
JI - March 26, 2008
i'm out
i'll be back later to tell you why brad thompson is better than bedard.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Ugh. No kidding...
The blogger formerly known as Corco, though, discovered this last night...
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
Flip Washburn for him.
Sorry.
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
Take a step in the ol' way back machine and not trade Jones for Bedard?
JI - March 26, 2008
you bet!
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
I have the feeling
that before you leave you'll have given us a wonderful new meme to play with.
BrianL - March 26, 2008
why?
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
No vintage Pineiro????
JI - March 26, 2008
uh, no.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Pineiro's 2001 was pretty good...
And 2002 wasn't bad.
//roids.
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
and don't say that man
it's march. optimism rules!
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
I propose that I join your bond so we can form the NL Alliance.
IIRC their is a Cubs fan around here that we could recruit as well.
Goose - March 26, 2008
Huh
I didn't realize if you turned off Avatars it turns off all avatars. So the people that hate them can completely ignore them
Scruffy Lefty - March 26, 2008
Stats page
this may have been brought up elsewhere by the hivemind, but can we make the stats page customizable somehow? This is a dorky blog that revels in each and every stat that makes Woody Paige cry. It's sort of weird to see a LL stats tab with BA/OBP/SLG. Maybe have a second tab with tRA/xFIP for pitchers and baseruns/fielding stats/GPA/whatever for position players
marc w - March 26, 2008
we definitely want to open it up like that
in this first round we've just setup the basics, but we'd really like to expand that out
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
hey
do the wide screen formats and no avatar updates apply to all blogs or just this one?
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
all SB Nation blogs on the new platform
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
thanks
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Win Expectancy charts need a home too
pdb - March 26, 2008
tRA will be tricky for you to do, I imagine...
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
NOT A REAL STAT
JI - March 26, 2008
Hey, Marc brought it up
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
WE SHOULD HAVE A PLACE FOR PHIL RODGERS POITN SYSTEM TOO
JI - March 26, 2008
You're just bitter ;)
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
so... once again...
thanks to Trei and all of the other developers, for staying up late as hell last night and then getting up early today to help us out and accommodate all of our requests... after hanging out in the game thread this morning for most of the game, I'm pretty much used to everything. I love most of it, the rest of it I'm getting used to, and theres very little I outright don't like at all.
thenatural - March 26, 2008
I have question
Is it possible to claim my old account and integrate it with, or does it even matter?
InSpokane - March 26, 2008
yes, you can claim an old account if you haven't already
if you want to claim the UID, join date, comments and diaries associated with it
but it looks like you already did that on LL eh?
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
got it thanks.
see I just opened a new one with out claiming my old. I really don't
all of theinstructions.InSpokane - March 26, 2008
So...
Aren't we supposed to be mercilessly ridiculing anyone with an avatar?
Maybe I didn't get the memo.
And my thanks to the SBNation staff for constructively responding to feedback.
eponymous_coward - March 26, 2008
if you have an avitar, I can't see it
JI - March 26, 2008
Fire away...
Or just turn them off...
PositivePaul - March 26, 2008
Yeah, I got THAT memo.
However, I'm satisfied enough with the switchover that my ability to ridicule is diminished.
Perhaps McLaren can make a boneheaded personnel move?
eponymous_coward - March 26, 2008
Unfortunately, Arthur Rhodes will not be going north.
JI - March 26, 2008
But Miguel Cairo will.
Someone needs to use him as an avatar.
eponymous_coward - March 26, 2008
Now that we can ignore them
I don't care what you people do.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
New complaint...
Second entry in 'news' reads as follows:
"Seattle Mariners 2008 Preview
That plus the addition of pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre and a better than average bullpen spearheaded by closer J.J. Putz has fans in the Emerald City thinking playoffs once again."
I'm sure everyone sees the problem with this.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
blame sportsnetwork
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
It's kinda hard when it's appearing in LL
Any way we can fix it? It's actually a ghastly piece of writing.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
it's clearly just a news feed
and their byline is on the article
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Test
So this is sort of like Slashdot now?
bluemax - March 26, 2008
Minus the Paultards.
BrianL - March 26, 2008
Also
I hate that I had to change my name. Fuck Matt over at the Bulls blog for stealing my name.
bluemax - March 26, 2008
because matt isn't common or anything.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
I'm not saying it isn't
but just because there are other Matt's in the world doesn't mean my friends don't know me as Matt, you know what I'm saying?
It'd be one thing if I had always been bluemax here, but I feel like I lost a bit of my identity.
bluemax - March 26, 2008
yeah, i know what you mean
losing the name scruffy righty was an emotional realization for me.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Things I hate.
1. FanShots. Why do we need to break up the content that was previously all in Diaries? Now I need to look in two places.
2. Auto-updating comments. First, that little pop-up at the bottom of my screen is distracting. Second, I now CAN'T TELL which comments I've read. On the old site, I could load the comment page, even if it was hundreds of comments long, read them, and then refresh to find the new ones. Now if new comments get added above where I was reading, I can't find them (because everything is still yellow). But if I refresh, that new comment isn't yellow because it was added while I was viewing the page.
The auto-updating comments are - AAAAGGH! - and the little pop-up message repositions my screen every time it happens, even while I'm typing a comment. STOP THAT! It did it again. And again. That's five times just in the last minute.
My point was, the auto-updating comments make it vastly harder to read a high-traffic thread, especially if you haven't been there the entire time. Game threads are going to be a disaster.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
And why isn't my comment new?
I just wrote it. It's appearing on the page for the very first time. Why isn't it shown as new?
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
Your own comments don't get shown as new
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
HA!
beat you to it!
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
That's a novel definition of 'beat'
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
says you.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
because you wrote it
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
It's still new.
How am I supposed to find it if it's not shown as new?
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
How can you lose it?
It's in the same position right after you hit POST!
ThundaPC - March 26, 2008
Until that Auto-update message repositions the screen.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
I believe in your settings
you can disable the auto-update.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
yeah you can.
i like it though.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Sweet!
I'm doing that now.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
Evan, you can disable auto-update in your settings
or above the comments in this thread. Then when you refresh you'll get new ones all at once. And either way, the Z key works well to scroll through the new ones. Does that help?
Ryan Gantz - March 26, 2008
It helped more when Jeff told me two hours ago.
I've already done it, and it's wonderful. Great feature.
The best new features are always the ones I can turn off.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
i had decided to sleep, sadly
and didn't notice until a few minutes after I posted that Jeff had answered below. So it goes.
Ryan Gantz - March 26, 2008
Im starting to like that popup
that comes up saying new comments, click on it an it brings you to the new comments
wadswerth - March 26, 2008
And lose track of where you were on an otherwise entirely yellow page.
Yeah, real helpful.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
the c button
is going to really suck when we're in game thread mood.
InSpokane - March 26, 2008
I don't see the point of "C", using "Z" makes much more sense to me.
JI - March 26, 2008
yeah Z is the meal ticket
wadswerth - March 26, 2008
thanks
much better.
InSpokane - March 26, 2008
I managed to create two SB Nation accounts
Any way to merge them? I've claimed 2 blogs with one and three blogs with the other.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
can you send us a request
at bugreport@sbnation.com with all the relevant info - we'll try to get you fixed up
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Incidentally
This is the other one of me.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
even more so than Carl Hubbell
JI - March 26, 2008
d'oh
stupid reply button
JI - March 26, 2008
Apologies if this was mentioned before
But I went to Matthew's Opening Day Event post to bump it, as it's now down the page... and just noticed you can't bump threads. Can this be enabled?
(BTW I'm posting away from work for the moment, browser's Firefox. No crashes, so the ad crashes are definitely an IE thing.)
Gomez - March 26, 2008
I was going to ask about that
But I never figured out how to bump threads anyway, so I figured I might just be being stupid.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
If you click to edit a post
look under the Publish button.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
Aha
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Oh HEY
There we go. Problem solved, carry on.
Gomez - March 26, 2008
I don't mind fanshots
Its a neat idea. If we could just have pics in the fanposts as well things would be neat-o.
CKremer - March 26, 2008
you can still put pics in fanposts
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
I'm still hitting F3 waaaay too much
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
I've lost my screenname in the transition
and I don't really know why.
Sure, it's easy to steal the name of another semi-obscure philosopher, but I'm still annoyed by this.
abelard - March 26, 2008
what was your name before?
did it tell you that someone else was using it on another blog?
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
It was JDS
and yeah, it sid someone on the Orioles blog was using it. Was it just first-come, first-serve on old names?
abelard - March 26, 2008
the names were reserved
based on a formula that took into account how long you've had the name and how active you are
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Ah
that's fair.
abelard - March 26, 2008
Probably the last person to log in and check this out by now
But I have to say I'm impressed thus far. Great work Trei & team!
thejew4u - March 26, 2008
Replies need to thread better
They stop threading when they get more than 19 tiers deep.
If you'll recall, I predicted this would happen when we were first told of the fixed width. This is a major problem - it makes it impossible to follow discussions when thy get realyl tangential.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
x
I honestly can't believe the collective bitch-fest from this community regarding this upgrade. I'm a Rangers fan and swing by here occasionally after reading LSB. I've always respected the quality of dialog that took place here, and wow, the tantrums that we saw (see?) were really beneath all you guys.
Have a terrible season ;)

way to bring the LSB mentality and civility to LL. I like and respect you guys (not your team), but thought I'd mention what I thought here.
I wasn't being personal or troll, or at least wasn't trying to be.
alon91 - March 26, 2008
What's with the 'x' in the subject?
seattlesundevil - March 26, 2008
I've gotten in the habit of doing
I'm not writing an email. Having a subject line for short comments feels awkward, so I just x it out and leave the comment in the body.
Just a preference thing.
alon91 - March 26, 2008
but you can post without a subject
or without a body
JP - March 26, 2008
Yea - that's what I was implying
But it definitely came out a bit snarky haha not intended!
seattlesundevil - March 26, 2008
I thought it was really funny.
JI - March 26, 2008
you're just mean.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Well done for noticing
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
but why?
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
I don't like idiots?
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
like me i suppose.
stlcardinalsfang - March 26, 2008
Thank you for your contribution
I don't really see how a member of LSB could possibly be critical of another community's behavior, but what do I know?
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
Nothing.
Ha. Sucker
brayden04 - March 26, 2008
LSB
That was my point. Our community sucks. It's undeniable.
Your community is, on the whole, smarter, less trollish, more insightful, wittier. I'm absolutely jealous.
And I'm calling you all out on being babies and handling the transition poorly.
alon91 - March 26, 2008
I think we've handled this quite well today
leading up it was a lot uglier, but then leading up we didn't know that we'd be able to ignore avatars and make the screen wider.
Jeff Sullivan - March 26, 2008
It's because Mariners fans are way bigger nerds than you are
and we actually use computers to their full potential.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
x
I live in San Francisco. I have a computer science degree. I work in technology. I'd take my chances, head-to-head against anyone in a nerdiness competition.
I was more addressing the overwhelming sense of entitlement that was happening here. These changes are meant to benefit your community, and the staff was clearly concerned for your needs and at least attempted to resolve any gripes.
Sure, it's not perfect, but it's a fucking blog, and it's technology. Do you really expect things to stay the same? Do you really expect it to be perfect at roll-out?
alon91 - March 26, 2008
Who the fuck would give you a degree?

seattlesundevil - March 26, 2008
I'd like to see that nerdiness competition.
Where's Corco?
My point is, we appear to stress the blog format in ways the SBN guys didn't really predict, and that doesn't really surprise me. I have that problem all the time in my day-to-day life (I'm a DBA).
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
Whew.. all caught up
Good to see everything that we talked about last night / early in the morning will be addressed. The SBN team rocks.
seattlesundevil - March 26, 2008
Hey clockwerks...
I've been having problems with CXZ working after I vote in a poll.
Jennifer - March 26, 2008
right, I saw yer report about that on AN
we weren't able to reproduce it reliably, but will try again
would you remind me what browser/OS you're having this problem in?
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
IE 7
Jennifer - March 26, 2008
Thank you.
Also, not to be a whining heifer, but I noticed this problem this morning:
I'm having issues with Preview and Save in FanPosts. Preview: the popup screen says my popups are blocked. They aren't. Then it eats my text. Save: Page says it's unavailable, then it eats my text. Is is user error?
You guys are awesome.
Jennifer - March 26, 2008
I saw that in yer DLD today
still working on trying to recreate that as well....
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Yes, you guys are awesome.
Jennifer - March 26, 2008
this page just took 26.422seconds to load
that's going to be a problem. What's the ETA on performance upgrades?
Matthew - March 26, 2008
It's only at 5 seconds or so for me right now
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
That's about what mine is at right now too
Not too bad.
seattlesundevil - March 26, 2008
Same here, load times aren't too bad.
BrianL - March 26, 2008
compare load times with avatars on and off. Matthew, I'm guessing you have avatars set to display?
you can change this in Edit Settings
JP - March 26, 2008
god no
anyways, it seems to have just been an isolated case. now it seems to finish leading ~5sec and for reference, I was talking a complete load, not just time until content loaded.
Matthew - March 26, 2008
Minor suggestion/bug...
Sorry if this was already covered, haven't read through the 700+ comments in the FanPost(s) and Blog(s) covering the new format.
When I go to the top and open the My Blogs menu, if I click More SBNation Blogs it takes me to what appears to be my profile page. This could already be the intended functionality, but I'd love it if that would just shoot out a new menu to the right which breaks out the SBNation family blogs by sport>league/division>blog.
thejew4u - March 26, 2008
I'd love it if the NEW designation
in the FanPosts sidebar could be written in a colour, maybe red, so it would stand out. It's a lot harder to find FanPosts with comments I haven't read than it was with the old Diaries system.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
I know I can hide avatars so I don't see them
but can I remove the avatar from my profile so other people don't see one associated with me?
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
you don't have one set
and in that case the default is used for those who see avatars. you can't change/remove that.
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Okay.
So I need to find one I like even if I have them turned off, got it.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
I think they did a great job
It looks really good.
phil333 - March 26, 2008
Z problems
So when someone posts a comment near the top of the thread while I'm at the bottom, and I hit Z, the comment becomes unmarked but I don't jump up to where it is It's been happening pretty consistently for me.
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Yeah, I have the same problem
It's the only bad thing about Z
seattlebruin - March 26, 2008
we'll check it out
Trei Brundrett - March 26, 2008
Graham, is this happening in Opera
i presume?
Ryan Gantz - March 26, 2008
Nope, Firefox 3 Beta 4
I switched because I couldn't use the longer threads in Opera
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
I'm having the same problem.

Welcome to the funhouse, LL :)
Poppy - March 26, 2008
Okay, so heres an idea...stay with me
We have auto refreshing comments, yes?
-BUT-
What if we had auto updating the front page, where it says XX comments, xx new.
where the number of comments and new ones auto updated, as well...on the front page.
no?
yes?
PShwa - March 26, 2008
Already been reported/requested
great idea.
pdb - March 26, 2008
*this is me being late*
glad someone else thought of it, means it wasnt as crazy as i thought.
PShwa - March 26, 2008
As to your discussion of the auto-update feature in game threads...
A word of warning (since, IIRC, your game threads get pretty active)... as I discovered in the super-busy AN game thread
last nightthis morning, if you are moving through new comments with Z or C, it often misses new replies that were added to older comments "upthread" from where the majority of the activity is happening. There were several comments I had to go find by scrolling up.Poppy - March 26, 2008
(and since I was using Z,
they had already been unyellowed when I found them, so it was a pain in the ass)
Poppy - March 26, 2008
Yeah, we've noticed that
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
LOL
I'm sorry, I completely missed that you just brought up that exact same thing. I scrolled down too fast after reading Evan's comments.
Poppy - March 26, 2008
New thing
Diaries are sometimes showing the wrong number of comments when you refresh the main page
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
Another new thing
On the old site, if I was reading comments and followed a link somewhere, when I returned to the comments using my BACK button I would get exactly the same page I was reading without losing the NEW designations on messages farther down the page.
But here, presumably because the yellow shading is all java-y or something, if I do that now (say to check out someone's profile) and return, all of the comments are now marked as read, even though I haven't refreshed the page.
That's not great.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
middle-click is your friend
it's an easy habit to get into and it loads links in a new tab (assuming you're using FF).
pdb - March 26, 2008
I hate tabbed browsing.
Tabs take away viewable area.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
why do you hate happiness?
Matthew - March 26, 2008
I hate new features that markedly change old features
It's like features have externalities that the developers don't take into account.
I've actually disabled tabs and hidden the tab bar in IE7.
Llewdor - March 26, 2008
I don't get the obsession with viewable area
to the extreme some people have it here. I despise things like google or yahoo toolbars because they suck, but tabs are incredibly useful and so is my bookmark taskbar. All together they give me two lines less of text that I can see at any moment. That's nothing.
Matthew - March 26, 2008
Tabs have another problem.
Tabs prevent me from seeing all the things I have open in one place. If I have several applications running, they're listed in the task bar. But if I start using tabbed browsing, the pages I'm accessing aren't listed separately for easy navigation.
Llewdor - March 27, 2008
Losing 10 pix is that important to you?
The easiest way to manage tabbed browsing is to not have 3456487 tabs open - keep it under 8 and they all show up on one nice, small row. And F11 maximizes the screen anyway so you don't even have to deal with that if you don't want to.
pdb - March 26, 2008
Yes it is.
I auto-hide the Windows task bar for the same reason. I never keep icons in the quick-launch bar. I use the Windows Classic display because the UI elements are smaller when they have square corners.
Llewdor - March 27, 2008
Ok
Now there's some weird stuff going on at the bottom of the home page. Doesn't look like it's on purpose
Graham MacAree - March 26, 2008
eh
not so bad now. Although I've got to lose the Avatar
Buzzard - March 26, 2008
I like how the other FanPosts
have a link on the right side of the page with the new comments, etc. Is it possible to add something similar for the posts from the front page?
Also, if you mark a comment as being read with the z or x command, shouldn't the number of new comments listed at the top of the page decrease accordingly?
Jed MC - March 27, 2008
My gripe about the new design
It seems like the new layout crams too much information into such a small part of the screen (I have a widescreen monitor at a high resolution). It's just way too busy and there's such a small part of the screen now that is dedicated to actual content that I have to constantly scroll to read articles, "FanPosts" and their comments. It's literally 5" of the screen on the homepage that has the main article text on it. The site needs to be able to adjust its content width to fill an entire screen like USSM and any other respectable site does. That'll make the outlay seem less busy and add more whitespace that the site is now sorely lacking in.

I just noticed the Narrow and Wide options on the side...
which does help, but the site still aught to be able to adjust its width or have more width options since there's still a lot of wasted space filled with gray.
