It's not good.
The Mariners are being coy about it, but the situation looks to be worse than they're letting on, and the fear is that if Bedard gets an MRI and a proper diagnosis, they'll have to shut him down for a significant amount of time. And if they don't do that and decide to play it day by day, it's an injury that could nag him all season.
There's really nothing we can do but cross our fingers that Bedard heals quicker than he's ever healed before in his life. Ever since we first caught wind of the trade rumors in December, we've known that he's fragile. Well, now we're confronted by his fragility, and we've no choice but to deal with it and hope for the best. In the meantime, man this sucks.
I guess in a way we kind of deserved this, what with everything the Angels are going through. I thought things were getting a little too easy.
Ironic that there were rumors about AJ's hip holding up the trade not too long ago. Good one, world.

Any idea on what the Ms are going to do?
MRI-wise?
Matthew - April 13, 2008
Not yet

What in he hell...
can possibly be wrong with a hip?
Broken?
Deep Bruise?
Degenerative Issue?
PLU Tim - April 13, 2008
Probably inflammation in the socket
I nearly broke my jaw several years ago, and ended up with a pocket of inflammation in my right side joint. It hurt very very bad, and I had to take anti-inflammatories for like a month. And that was in my tiny jaw socket, I can't imagine what a hip would feel like.
tootthekazoo - April 13, 2008
It healed though, right?
It's not nagging you, I hope.
Gomez - April 13, 2008
its only a flesh wound
Bearskin Rugburn - April 13, 2008
What a brilliant fucking trade.
JI - April 13, 2008
For the record this doesn't make the trade any better or worse
it was just one of the risks we were taking, and now it's come back to bite us.
Sure does suck though.
Jeff Sullivan - April 13, 2008
I agree that you can't use hindsight to evaluate a trade
however, one of the reason many of us were opposed to it was Bedard's crappy health history.
JI - April 13, 2008
Yes
This doesn't exactly make the optimists look real good.
Jeff Sullivan - April 13, 2008
I blame Canada.
JI - April 13, 2008
they just fell in love with the guy, had to have him,
so they looked past the injury concerns. i know the M's needed a frontline starter. but getting so fixated on one guy, to the possible detriment of sound judgment on his physical health, and definitely to the detriment of the terms of the deal due to Jones's big mouth/failure of the front office to keep a lid on it.
looks like it's really biting them in the ass now, like most everything Bill touches.
lemonverbena - April 13, 2008
This is always a poor approach
IMO unless you have a shit-ton of MLB ready pieces on the side, you always want to be on the heavy end of a 5 for 1 deal.
Gomez - April 13, 2008
Ironically enough
Look who else is healthy right now

This is my fault
I knew this was going to happen as soon as I drafted him in my fantasy league.

Way to go, douchebag.
BrianL - April 13, 2008
Moron it's your fault.
EnglishMariner - April 13, 2008
Well, this sucks
But on the bright side, how often do you hear of season ending hip injuries? Whatever is wrong with him it can't be -too- bad right? *knock on wood*
OlSalty - April 13, 2008
Paging Albert Belle, Albert Belle to the courtesy desk...
not that this is in any way similar, but hip problems can kill careers.
abelard - April 13, 2008
He was old and angry
and swung a bat with a violent, similarly angry motion for nearly a couple decades. Also, Ring Da Belle Bitch's hip was arthritic.
Gomez - April 13, 2008
Well, yeah
that's why I said "not that this is in any way similar.' I was just pointing out that hip problems have managed to end seasons, if not careers.

Snowman1025 - April 13, 2008
Well, I'm glad I ate well before reading this
If it's not a degenerative condition but an aggravated injury, I say eat it, shut Bedard down and let him heal up in full. If Baek sucks at this SPing business, you have a functional knuckleballer in Tacoma who has made quick, serious strides towards SP effectiveness.
But if this is just one of those things that's gonna keep popping up, then give him the best therapy you can and get every start and inning out of him you can.

Things I am glad to see when I wake up != this
Nick S - April 13, 2008
Oh man
when I turned on the radio in the car and heard Baek instead of Bedard I feared the worst. :(
bluemax - April 13, 2008
Bedard's Windup
I wonder if this is related to the extra turn he gets with his hips before he comes to the plate.
It seems to be an unorthodox way of getting turn, but I'm no expert.
tait644 - April 13, 2008
Shut him down
I'd rather have a healthy Bedard for the second half than a mediocre one for most of the year.
phil333 - April 13, 2008
Is something wrong with Beltre too?
Besides the hand thing? or is this just a normal rest day?
Mariner John - April 13, 2008

Matthew - April 13, 2008
Whatever it is
I hope it's not bad, and at the same time I hope they don't rush him back. We definately need him but we need him healthy.
