Happy US Tax Day! Who got shafted? I'm happy to report that I did not.
I'll tell you that a couple of org players had to pay the karma taxman, and that two games were in doubt until the final out, while we split the two that weren't. I'll leave it to your willingness to click through the jump to find out which.
Also, you know Jeff Clement's having a hot April when he goes 2 for 5 and his batting average goes DOWN. And as MfaninAlaska mentioned in a previous thread, WLAD took a tomato can deep for his 3rd bomb of the year. Did these performances have a big impact?
On to the wrap-up!

A: Fort Wayne 5, Wisconsin 3
Robert Harmon: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 walks, 3 K, wild pitch
Jacob Wild: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 5 K
Justin Souza: two outs, 1 H, 2 walks, K
Ryan Moorer: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, walk, 2 K
Travis Mortimore: 1 IP, walk, K
Daniel Carroll: 1-5, RBI, K
Alex Liddi: 1-3, double, 2 R, walk
Korey Feiner: 1-3, solo HR, walk, K
SSS alert: Robert Harmon sucks.
Groundballs: 4
Flyballs: 2
Line Drives: 2
Walks: 3
Strikeouts: 3
Down 4-0 in the 3rd, a Korey Feiner solo shot (I knew they kept him around for a reason!) got the T-Rats a run and Juan Diaz single cashed in another in the 4th.
But then the T-Rats flatlined, and Fort Wayne put on their robe and Wizard hat and cast Inning 8 Luis Martinez Triple to cash in another run and make it 5-2. The T-Rats made one last-gasp effort in the bottom 9th. Alex Liddi and Joe Dunigan drew walks, and a Juan Diaz groundout moved them into scoring position. Alex Meneses popped out, but Korey Feiner drew a walk to load them.
Daniel Carroll smoked a grounder to short, and SS Andrew Cumberland had no play, allowing Liddi to score and keeping them loaded with two outs. But Calvin Beamon's grounder did not stymie 3B Andrew Parrino, who snagged it and stepped on the nearby bag for the game ending force-out.
A+: Lake Elsinore 9, High Desert 5
Nick Hill (!!): 3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER (2 HR) 2 walks
Harold Williams: 3 IP, 3 walks, 2 K, balk
Joe Kantakevich: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 walks, wild pitch
David Asher: two outs, 2 H
Aaron Cotter: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 walks, K, hit batter
Kuo Hui Lo: 1-5, triple, 2 R, K
Johan Limonta: 1-4, R, sac fly RBI, K
Chris Minaker: 2-4, double, R, RBI
Travis Scott: 2-4, 2 RBI
Matt Mangini: 0-1, 3 walks, K
A gusting left to right wind made it difficult for Mavs pitching to find the strike zone, as they allowed a combined 10 walks!
And I'd have to wonder if the impatient, aggressive hitting of the Mavs in this wind was a factor in the 9 K's that Lake pitchers rung up.
Military Man Nick Hill got the surprise start, not long after I told somebody that he was doomed to a life of relief. Well, after this start, he may stick with relief, though pitching in a 33 mph cross-wind is sure one hell of a handicap. I won't even post BIP numbers, because between the crosswind jacking up pitchers' control and carrying flyballs out of reach, I'm not sure it's fair to use this performance to judge any pitching performance. Oh, and Nick Hill's day sucked... but then again, so did most of- WAIT, how did Family Warrior Harold Williams string together three hitless innings?
A line out, four flyouts (and Nick Hill's first flyball left the yard), three walks... it's inexplicable how Harold managed such great fortune. Familial karma?
Anyway, Lake had the early 4-0 lead, until the Mavs awoke in the 6th. Chris Minaker doubled in a run off Dylan Axelrod, and Travis Scott lined a two out single to cash in two more and cut the lead to 4-3. In the bottom 7th, Kuo Hui Lo lined a one out triple to right, and Johan Limonta sac flied him in to TIE THE BALLGAME.
But Joe Kantakevich got pounded in the top 8th. Sam Carter led off with a gorund rule double, and a JK wild pitch eventually cashed him in to make it 5-4 Lake. Javis Davis walked and Jesus Lopez smoked a single through the hole to RF, only for Jamie McOwen to misplay for two bases. Davis Asher came in to stop the damage, only to allow more. Robert Perry sac flied Javis Diaz in, 6-4. Eric Sogard singled, and Cedric Hunter singled to cash in Lopez, 7-4.
The Mavs got some help with runners at the corners and one out in the bottom 8th, when Rolando Valdez uncorked a wild pitch to let Greg Halman in and cut the lead to 7-5. Matt Mangini drew his 3rd walk of the night, but Leury Bonilla and Jamie McOwen went down quietly to end the threat.
Aaron Cotter came in to hold down the fort and allow a bottom 9th rally, but for the 2nd straight game, he got hit. Sam Carter doubled with one out, then Cotter gave up back to back walks to load the bases. Then Jesus Lopez doubled to let two runs in 9-5, though Cotter took the relay from Kuo Hui Lo, and threw out Jodam Rivera at 3rd. Cotter did plunk Robert Perry and walk another batter, but Cedric Hunter lined out to end the threat.
There would be no rally.
Leury "Latin Campaneris" Bonilla watch: he appears to have settled in at 2B, starting there for the 3rd straight game. He went 1 for 4.
AA: Mobile 8, West Tenn 7
Rich Dorman: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 walks, 3 K
Brodie Downs: 1.2 IP, 6 H, (4 R) 3 ER, walk, K
Mumba Rivera: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER (HR), 2 K
Michael Saunders: 2-5, 2 R, 2 K, SB
Mark Kiger: 1-4, 2 R, RBI, walk
Adam Moore: 2-5, RBI
Marshall Hubbard: 2-5, 2 RBI, K
Prentice Redman: 1-4, RBI, walk, K
Ronnie Prettyman: 2-4, triple, solo HR, 2 R
Luis Valbuena: 0-2, R, sac fly RBI, walk
To expedite things so I can get some sleep, I'll omit BIP data for now.
With the game tied at 1, Rich Dorman left the game in the 4th after back to back hits, and Brodie Downs' luck ran out, as he imploded in the 5th, was left out there to die and continued his slow implosion through the 6th. Once he was finally yanked before the 7th, the score was 7-1 Mobile.
West Tenn rallied late. Valbuena led off the top 8th with a walk, Michael Saunders smoked a single to right, Mark Kiger walked to load the bases for... Adam Moore.
And Moore, who hasn't had the hottest of starts but has been effective, smoked a grounder to 3rd that 3B Cesar Nicolas could not play, scoring a run, 7-2. Marshall Hubbard's groundout made it 7-3. Prentice Redman's groundout made it 7-4 before Jon Nelson struck out to end the frame.
Then Cesar Nicolas atoned in the bottom 8th by taking Mumba Rivera deep to make it 8-4 in the bottom 8th.
In the 9th, Ronnie Prettyman hit a one out solo shot to make it 8-5. A Mark Kiger single punched in Saunders to make it 8-6, and a Marshall Hubbard two out single made it 8-7. But Nicolas' homer was the difference, as Prentice Redman went down on strikes to end it.
AAA: Tacoma 14, Fresno 6
Robert Rohrbaugh: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER (HR), 4 walks, 2 K
Scott Shoemaker: 1.1 IP, walk, K
Cesar Jimenez: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 K
Bronson Sardinha: 3-5, triple, R, 3 RBI
Jeremy Reed: 3-6, R, 2 RBI
WLAD: 2-4, double, solo HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 walks, K
Jeff Clement: 2-5, 2 run HR, 2 R
Yung Chi Chen: 1-5, double, R, RBI
Bryan LaHair: 3-4, 2 run HR, 3 R, walk
Matt Tuiasosopo: 1-5, R, K
Rob Johnson ("DH"): 2-5, R, RBI
There was no score, until the Rainiers spent the 4th inning treating Julio Mateo like he treats his wife. By the time they finished having his way with the Starts Vulture, it was 9-0 Rainiers. Even after Rohrbaugh got bombed for 6 runs, the Rainiers sitll had a comfortable 11-6 lead after 6 and cruised from there.

Jeff Clement is so dreamy.

Remember his interviews during his September call-up?
He’s the new Dan Wilson, except, you know, he can hit. With Adam Jones gone, Clement is the next Face of the Franchise.
G_ - April 16, 2008
Any word on Triunfel?
Mariner John - April 16, 2008
Triunfel expected back soon

saltydog75 - April 16, 2008
oops, wtf
saltydog75 - April 16, 2008
God, Wlad and Clement are RAKING right now.
FYI:
Jeff Clement – .419/.500/.721, 4 2B, 3 HR, 7 BB, 6 K, 43 AB
Wlad Balentien – .289/.383/.632, 4 2B, 3 HR, 6 BB, 8 K, 38 AB
After a slow start, Wlad is lookin’ pretty good.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 16, 2008
They ain't no Mike Morse, though
Jordan of Boise - April 16, 2008
Slow start = "at home"
Raking = “went to Colorado Springs”
Ok, it’s not that simple, but have you seen their SSS home/road splits?
It’s hard to fathom just how atypical Cheney Stadium is for the PCL.
marc w - April 16, 2008
Good point.
Those splits are scary.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 16, 2008
Still...
...good news as far as we’re concerned, right? Particularly for Clement?
rtang - April 16, 2008
Oh sure
It’s more funny than anything.
Though Clement wasn’t exactly a world beater at home last year either (though his splits weren’t as bad as Reed’s), and it would make me happier if it was clear that he could hit for power in places that aren’t exactly launchpads.
That’s not a knock on him (and as much of a hitter’s league as the PCL is, there are still more HRs hit in the majors), but you know, Tacoma’s not a terrible proxy for Safeco while Colorado Springs is a good proxy for the OLD Coors field, and Albuquerque is a proxy for a softball field.
marc w - April 16, 2008
I'd expect Safeco to be much more Clement-friendly than Cheny
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
That's fair
I’d love to see the park factors by RH/LH or by RF, CF, LF like you get with the big league parks.
If all goes to plan, he, like any other good MiLB hitter, should hit for more power in the big leagues. But I’d really like to see him hit the crap out of the ball in a tough environment, even if Safeco would be friendlier.
Jones hit for more power/OPS in Tacoma than he did on the road, which was just another sign that he was ready. Wlad’s splits are fairly even (better on the road, duh, but not extreme), and I think that should bode well. When Clement hits for an .850 OPS or so at home, yeah, that’s great – he’d be ready to hit in Safeco.
(yes, these benchmarks and precedents are utterly arbitrary, and I apologize for that)
marc w - April 16, 2008
Tui liked Colorado Springs...
PositivePaul - April 16, 2008
Yeah
that was the most extreme, though that’s just because Tacoma didn’t treat him well in the opening homestand.
marc w - April 16, 2008
keep in mind
the weather was pretty ugly opening things up in Tacoma as well… so not only was the park don’t good for hitters but the weather wasn’t either.
MfaninAlaska - April 16, 2008
Eh, it wasn't terrible
The wind wasn’t blowing in consistently, they played one game in rain, temps in the 50s-low 40s. If anything, the weather’s been worse on the road.
marc w - April 16, 2008
If Clement is ready for the show
this year or next, what does that mean for Johjima? Will we simply not re-sign him or do we ask him to back-up or platoon Clement?
thewyrm - April 16, 2008
We trade him for a broken starter.
Or a “veteran cather with experience”, i.e. can’t hit, catch, or throw out runners. I’m thinking Varitek.
Faux - April 16, 2008
Sorry.
I didn’t mean trade Johjima, I mean we’ll trade Clement. We’ll let Joh walk and refuse the draft pick.
Faux - April 16, 2008
Johjima walks
Every indication is that the Mariners are serious about Clement. If Joh isn’t traded this July, then we’ll let him become a Type A this fall and enjoy an extra draft pick in June of ‘09.
Katal LM - April 16, 2008
I've been saying this for a while
but why not keep Joh AND Clement and alternate them between DH and Catcher? We keep both bats in the lineup for the entire season, and we keep them both well rested all year. The only downside would be Burke’s severe loss of playing time.
Rollo Tomasi - April 16, 2008
The standard response I've seen from more knowledgeable people than me
is that Joh’s bat doesn’t really play too well at DH and neither does Clement’s. Their value comes from their bat being at C. They are both an upgrade over Vidro, but a better-than-Vidro bat shouldn’t be the qualification for DH.
Jed MC - April 16, 2008
It should be if Vidro's the only other option.
If playing Kenji and Clement at DH is the only way we’re going to sit Vidro, then we should play Kenji and Clement at DH.
Llewdor - April 16, 2008
If we're going to sit Vidro
then it’d be RAD to get Ibanez’s glove out of LF.
marc w - April 16, 2008
Good point - I was thinking more about next season than this year.
Jed MC - April 16, 2008
I will be shocked if Griffey isn't our DH next year
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
read: fulltime outfielder
Matthew - April 16, 2008
we have a winner!
MfaninAlaska - April 16, 2008
I'd love that personally. If he's in the OF, not so much.
Thingray - April 16, 2008
Oh, I fully endorse it
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
Griffey (DH) and Texiera (1B)
your 2008 offseason approved signings.
Though I wouldn’t mind seeing a Bonds-Griffey split between DH and RF.
Matthew - April 16, 2008
That would make pitchers piss themselves.
Rich Harden would have a torn bladder.
CapSea - April 16, 2008
If Griffey and Ibanez were in the same OF
I think Ichiro would die from exhaustion.
My [far fetched] hope is that upon Griffey’s [alleged] return that Raul is no long needed as The Face Of The Franchise and his ass gets kicked to the curb.
JI - April 16, 2008
My far-fetched hope:
Ichiro CF
Lopez 2B
Griffey DH
Teixeira 1B
Beltre 3B
Clement C
Balentien RF
Reed LF
Betancourt SS
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
Reed in LF? You still have some hope for him I'm guessing?
Thingray - April 16, 2008
Not really, but I like having a good outfield defense
Also, the rest of that lineup is so absurdly awesome that I don’t really feel the urge to go out of house for a replacement.
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
Combine this with the Bonds-Griff platoon
and we have an offense I’d buy season tickets for.
Matthew - April 16, 2008
What makes you think Bonds would be an effective hitter a year from now?
I want him here as much as anyone but I don’t think we should expect another .280/.470/.570 repeat.
JI - April 16, 2008
He'll be well-rested.
pdb - April 16, 2008
This would make me so happy.
CapSea - April 16, 2008
Yeah, if the 2009 M's ran out that lineup
I’d have the season ticket deposit dropped immediately.
Gomez - April 16, 2008
Clement
Given his part timing, I’m led to speculate if maybe, with Adam Moore climbing the ladder, if they’re not considering part-timing those two once they reach the bigs, and then having Clement spend time at 1B/DH, a la Victor Martinez. That’s just guesstimated speculation, though.
(the blog’s being wonky today. I posted this comment earlier. It wouldn’t post. I posted it again. It double posted. I deleted the 2nd comment, and then it deleted both comments.)
Gomez - April 16, 2008
Best. Signature. EVER.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 16, 2008
I'm as excited about Clement
as the rest of you, but Joh is my favorite Mariner. I hope he sticks around as our DH/Backup Catcher.
thewyrm - April 16, 2008
wouldn't be much of a DH
but would be one hell of a backup catcher. Nevertheless, I expect he won’t be done as a starter until a few years after his time with the M’s is up so my guess is he goes to the NL East.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 16, 2008
A really really expensive backup catcher
Graham MacAree - April 16, 2008
Bavasi makes all sorts of crazy deals
I’d rather pay Joh a monkey of cash to be our #2 Catcher than pay Vidro to be our full time DH.
thewyrm - April 16, 2008
monkey ton I meant
thewyrm - April 16, 2008
I want a monkey of cash.
pdb - April 16, 2008
"Hey, look everybody! It's the cash monkey!"
Or: “Dude, my fundage is low, I need to hit a cash monkey.”
Thingray - April 16, 2008
is that anything like a brass monkey?
Matthew - April 16, 2008
I'm going to start calling the ATM the "cash monkey" now
it’s much more awesome than my prior term, the GodWall.
pdb - April 16, 2008
It is a good nickname too.
Barry “Cash Monkey” Zito
Jed MC - April 16, 2008
Is there nothing the Cash Monkey can't do?
pdb - April 16, 2008
Get batters out
Gomez - April 16, 2008
Don't bet against the Cash Monkey
he flings some nasty stuff.
pdb - April 16, 2008
LOL
Typos can be fun
thewyrm - April 16, 2008
Or goes back home to Japan.
