I think the lesson here is that, when a pitcher claims to have discovered a new key to success but won't elaborate on what it is, he's lying.

Ok I just finished watching the archived game
I’m not sure, but I think our manager asked our 4 for 4 two hole hitter to bunt Ichiro to second base. I just can’t believe that is possible. Was there something wrong with my game feed or did that actually happen last night?
thewyrm - April 26, 2008
Yeah we were really happy about that
Everyone thought that was great.
Jordan of Boise - April 26, 2008
Actually,
Turns out McLaren told Lopez to only bunt if Huston Street used a slide-step, in which case, I can only blame McLaren for putting complex ideas into Lopez’s simple mind. Oh, and Ichiro said that the bunt call was the right one.
Two points.
1) I don’t think this team will lose 90 games but boy did that feel like a loss only a 90-loss team would have. The opposing team scores its runs on a few walks and singles without doing much of anything else and we just let’em win. This game was an annoying combination of pitiful offense and bad luck. Both bunt attempts were fouled out and a diving Bobby Crosby prevents the tying run from scoring in the 9th (funny call by Sims, BTW).
So that makes 3-straight losses. Pythag says we should be 13-11 but instead we’re 11-13. Making up for 2007 pheraps?
2) I’ll give Batista a pass on his “secret”. He was clearly injured. And I’ll still give him the four or five starts he requests to see if his reinvention is for real.
As bad as this game was, I so badly want Bedard to come in hurling 9.0 innings of shutout ball (okay, at least 7.0 innings?) it’s not even funny. No more of this hip thing, man….mmmkay?
ThundaPC - April 26, 2008
Krueger was guessing
that Batista was shortarming the ball. Maybe THAT’s his secret :P
Gomez - April 26, 2008
That's what I thought as well.
And that’s also what may have injured him.. so….....
CapSea - April 26, 2008
I don't believe a word Bill Krueger says.
planB - April 26, 2008
It's easy, mkaaaaaaaaaaayyy!
qrsouther - April 26, 2008
Here's what happened
McLaren started relaying the customary ‘take 1st pitch’ sign for Loafie to Perlozzo, but sneezed, meaning his finger slipped up his nose, which is ‘bunt the first pitch’ sign, Perlozzo wasn’t the wiser, relayed the sign and Loafie did what he was asked.
Moral: MARK LORETTA GETS THAT BUNT DOWN.
Gomez - April 26, 2008
And Sam Perlozzo, afterwards
Sneezed and his middle finger slipped up, pointing towards Sputnik. McLaren took that as a “You did a good job, Squinty. Unlucky I guess, we’ll get em next time.”
qrsouther - April 26, 2008
If people argued that winning 1 run ballgames
was a repeatable skill, what does that make losing them?
DCMariner - April 26, 2008
As I understand it...
...it’s not; a team’s record in 1-run games tends toward 50-50, irrespective of their total record.
planB - April 26, 2008
Also, atleast we don't have a monopoly on boneheaded moves
http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2008/04/26/proof-that-the-baseball-gods-do-exist/
It’s nice escaping the M’s misery everynow and then by catching up with Poz.
DCMariner - April 26, 2008
All I can say in response to that move is. . .
wow.
thewyrm - April 26, 2008
At least you're not the Texas Rangers.
I think the Mariners will pull out of this and turn things around.
44FAN - April 26, 2008
at least you might fire your manager
Matthew - April 26, 2008
Uh, they're an Angels fan.
Coach Owens - April 26, 2008
well, technically, it's a single person
and, yeah, whatever, at least TEX will fire their manager.
Matthew - April 26, 2008
Maybe he has
an extremely high opinion of “44FAN” and innacurately assumed that such a thing exists as the royal third person.
Liebkartoffel - April 26, 2008
Thanks man
But it is still depressing to watch 3 straight crappy games like this. It’s ok because we have our 1-2 Punchâ„¢ tonight.
Fin - April 26, 2008
and tomorrow.
Fin - April 26, 2008
Or at least our 2
qrsouther - April 26, 2008
Oh, I'm sure we will.
Despite overreactions and some depressing games it’s essentially bad luck and underperformance holding this team back. Not having a healthy Erik Bedard every five days doesn’t help either.
ThundaPC - April 26, 2008
Smurf
CapSea - April 26, 2008
What happened to the upcoming game preview sections?
They used to be sidebarred on the right, below the fanPosts section… its not that big of a deal, but it was an easy way for me to see what time the next game was at.
Maybe I’m the only one who’s not seeing it, since I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, or maybe I missed it or nobody cares… just wondering
thenatural - April 26, 2008
I just put it back
Jeff Sullivan - April 26, 2008
nice
thanks
thenatural - April 26, 2008
Sorry in advance..
But Jeff, your Win Expectancy chart made me think of this:
Warning: Link contains Rap music, Explicit Lyrics, and Girls in Bikinis “Shaking It”
GhettoBear04 - April 26, 2008
Maybe i'm parsing....
Ichiro didn’t exactly say the Lopez bunt was the right call. He said it was the “obvious call.”
McLaren is a pretty obvious guy.
