The M’s can spin off Washburn to a pitching starved team whose GM suffers from Sabeanitis. It’s not like R.A. Dickey would do any worse, and at least he’d last longer.
Is it me or does Richie look like he has Tyrannosaurus Rex arms swinging at the ball? Seems like all this year he has pulled in his elbows and then swing. How could that possible generate any kind of power ?
Is the development of Felix Hernandez a sign the M’s as an organization have finally turned the corner in harvesting home grown pitching or did he bludgeon through system incompetence on the strength of his talent? Because I can’t think of a recent solid Mariners starter who came up through the system. Sure, Pineiro and Meche had their uh…moments, but they’re both freaking head cases. And then there’s the long line of Andersons, Blackleys, Nageottes, Cloudes…etc.
It just seems like the M’s are grossly exceeding the defect rate for starting pitching and It’d be nice if Aumont made it to the bigs in one rationally thinking piece…
Remember how Graham and I wanted to sign Milton Bradley? He’s got a .922 OPS, which is pretty impressive considering he wasn’t supposed to be healthy for another few weeks.
And the best position player in the AL West’s OPS is .986.
Not that long looping swings are good for hitting a baseball, but Ernie Els generates a lot of power in his golf swing with a seemingly “lazy” motion. In golf they mention having effortless power instead of powerless effort – I.E. Griffey or Palmeiro
and you don’t adjust your bat speed. Your bat speed remains constant. If you have a quick bat, you can punish hard throwers and soft throwers. If you have a slow bat, you can only punish soft throwers (unless you correctly guess when a hard thrower is throwing a fastball).
I can see it now.
If the offense doesn’t score enough runs to win, Wlad is going to get blamed.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Wlad fitting in already.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
Nice try Raul.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
That was pretty

why is a one-eyed cat happier than a two-eyed cat?
thenatural - April 30, 2008
It's from the original lyrics to "Shake, Rattle and Roll"
And for the ‘50s, the lyrics are filthy
rickpo - April 30, 2008
God damn these guys are old school
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008

Goose - April 30, 2008
Say what?
I’m getting the CLE feed.
Fett42 - April 30, 2008
what did he say?
Corco - April 30, 2008
He was talking about Griffey and 600 homers.
He mentioned both Bonds and Sosa as members of the 600 club.
Goose - April 30, 2008
that is bad news
Corco - April 30, 2008
Bud's secret police should remove him soon...
Kind of like the purges.
dkulich - April 30, 2008
Sosa's nickname should be Corko.
CapSea - April 30, 2008
I disapprove
I may cheat but I do it legally
Corco - April 30, 2008
Can we surrender this early in the game.
A 1-0 deficit is possible to come back from, but 2-0…. this team is in serious shit.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
We have never come back from a 2 run defecit this year.
Fett42 - April 30, 2008
Seriously??
Game over.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
but... but...
Wlad is going to hit at least two homeruns tonight.
AtomicGarden - April 30, 2008
So is Grady Sizemore...
and Ryan Garko, Casey Blake, and Franklin Gutierrez.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Wow, from pounding the strike zone to a 4 pitch walk
in one inning. Way to stay consistent, Washburn.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
he's consistent in his inconsistency

deacvision7 - April 30, 2008
That makes up for the bullsmurf hit, to be honest
seattlebruin - April 30, 2008
seriously that was unbelievable
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Seriously, even Slampig would have scored on that hit.
What was Blake doing?
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
It would look like this, though.
Faux - April 30, 2008
Exactly.
Sliding into home is stupid. If you come in standing up, the catcher is going to hesitate and he is more likely to miss the ball, even if your intention is not pound him into the ground.
But on a bloop hit like that, Blake should have been halfway to homeplate by the time the ball landed.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Blake would've been safe if the throw weren't 100% perfect
which it was
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Yeah, but he should have been in the dugout before Ichiro even got a throw off.
Amazing arm by Ichiro, but slow ass baserunning on the part of Blake.
I won’t complain, though. I am happy things turned out the way they did.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
this is why leadoff walks are really stupid
Matthew - April 30, 2008
I always forget what a cannon

TheOptimist - April 30, 2008

The M’s can spin off Washburn to a pitching starved team whose GM suffers from Sabeanitis. It’s not like R.A. Dickey would do any worse, and at least he’d last longer.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
Sabean did just send a veteran lefty to the pen.
He could use another one.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
I would personally buy and hand deliver him a fruit basket
when I’m in SanFran if he took Wash off our hands.
Matthew - April 30, 2008
There's only two of those teams left and one of them's us
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008

deacvision7 - April 30, 2008
Wlad is coming up!
seattlebruin - April 30, 2008
No matter what Wlad does, it will be in vain.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Richie, you can't catch up to anything at your belt
just take those pitches and hope they get ruled high
Matthew - April 30, 2008
T-Rex?
Is it me or does Richie look like he has Tyrannosaurus Rex arms swinging at the ball? Seems like all this year he has pulled in his elbows and then swing. How could that possible generate any kind of power ?
nwtrev - April 30, 2008
Okay, having Wlad in the lineup is nice, but was anyone expecting to win this game anyway? It’s Jarrod Washburn vs. somehow-freakishly-good Cliff Lee.
OlSalty - April 30, 2008
Knowing that theres no way Lee continues to pitch as well as he is
I was holding onto some hope… but yesterday’s game made me forget about how awful our offense is
thenatural - April 30, 2008
I wasn't expecting to win a game this series.
Then last night happened. But yeah, this game is over.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
I am now
(not really)
ralphie81 - April 30, 2008
Wlad infield hit.

bluemax - April 30, 2008
Nice hustle Wlad
He’s swinging ahead of everything so far but he’ll adjust.
Omerta - April 30, 2008
I'd rather see him swinging ahead of pitches
than be Richie-late.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Well there's a difference between being slightly ahead and egregiously late
ala Sexson.
Omerta - April 30, 2008
WLAD!
deacvision7 - April 30, 2008
woo hoo a hit!!
MFAN - April 30, 2008
CRUSHED!
Teej - April 30, 2008
I still have no idea why people think young players are huge ?s

JI - April 30, 2008
WLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD
Incidentally how’s he looked in the field tonight?
Fett42 - April 30, 2008

Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Welcome to the Twilight Zone.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
so more than one?
JI - April 30, 2008

Jesus Cristo
Fett42 - April 30, 2008
Not many chances.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008

sammy - April 30, 2008
he hasn't had a ball hit to him in the air yet, I don't believe
basebliman - April 30, 2008

And what do we do with Beltre?
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
I don't know man
I’m method GMing, trying to visualize deals like Bavasi would…
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
Needs more Everett
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
goddamnit ichiro.
sammy - April 30, 2008
We should have traded Ichiro while his value was high.
Maybe we can still get Justin Upton in return?
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Didn't the Dodgers offer Gary Sheffield for him during Spring Training '01
Best move Pat Gillick never made.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
Really?
Omerta - April 30, 2008
Not possible.
Ichiro would not be trade eligible until June 1st after signing a contract.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Are you sure?
Is that a requisite for all free agent signings?
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
Yes.
This is not the NBA with sign-and-trade capabilities.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
le sigh
deacvision7 - April 30, 2008
doom and gloom

Eric Wedge is giving Travis Hafner a mental break?
Maybe that’s F’nA’s problem. His mental break never ended.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Why am I watching this game
Fett42 - April 30, 2008
Go to hell Washburn.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Again Washburn gets no run support
Omerta - April 30, 2008
Hardly any of our starters are getting run support.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008

Omerta - April 30, 2008
Baek is warming up.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008

basebliman - April 30, 2008

TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
That was bad
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Watching Washburn and Baek work together to go 6+ innings

Fett42 - April 30, 2008
That was a Beltre at bat, only without the underlying ability
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
I like the new non-crazy Beltre.
JI - April 30, 2008
But seven in one game?
Then again, how do you explain the other six?
Faux - April 30, 2008
dave just said:
“swung on and a hiiiigghh.. swung on and missed i should say”
time to hang ‘em up.
bholdr - April 30, 2008
Ks are nice for good pitchers.
This is just counterproductive for Washburn.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
Man that is an ugly slide-step.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
At least can say Washburn has been a good 4th starter.
Too bad our offense sucks.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Spoke too soon...
Sigh
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
You can?
Happybelly - April 30, 2008
The divine power(s) that be have decreed the Indians hitters must suffer (somewhat)

Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
Fuck this.

SethGrandpa - April 30, 2008
Or for Vidro.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Garko sucks. He'll somehow find a way to hit into a triple play.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
You only need 2.
And it’s possible he would have, but Wash didn’t give him a chance.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
I think I'll watch one more Wlad at bat, then I'm done with this game.

bholdr - April 30, 2008
You mean,
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Maybe I will work on fixing this up instead of watching the game.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
I rushed home to see Wlad
I seem to have forgotten what the other 24 players are like
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Beltre is good.
JI - April 30, 2008
I knew I was smart
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Blowers: "Right now he needs to get a double-play ball"
Why does he HAVE to get a Double-Play ball? Why not a strike out and a ground out? Why not a pop-up and a fly-out? Why not 2 Ks?
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
Blowers has poor language skills.
JI - April 30, 2008
GTA 4 time?
I think so.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Insurmountable
Omerta - April 30, 2008
We hit that point when we were down by two runs.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
hmmm
I thought Ichiro was gonna pull that one in
thenatural - April 30, 2008
You're way too optimistic
ralphie81 - April 30, 2008
I disagree
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Baek is still a Mariner?
JI - April 30, 2008
BYE
basebliman - April 30, 2008
More fun
Happybelly - April 30, 2008
Fuck..and the Wizards beat the Cavs...fuck tonight in the face with a hammer
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
...
How is that…I mean how would that wor….nevermind.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
I just turned this game on....
FUCK YOU WASHBURN YOU FUCKING CUNT
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
We'd still lose if Washburn had only given up that solo HR in the first...so I dont blame him
Ok..I do…but this offense is built so poorly. And Vidro lost his job, but he can still bat 5th when he does play.
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Like I said I just turned the game on
So Cliff Lee may be good (or our offense blows, or both) but my first instinct looking at this score is to say fuck Washburn.
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
That wasn't even a bad pitch.
Slider on the outside corner…
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
This looks just like Cleveland's 9th inning yesterday.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
our team is an anus stuffed with used douchebags
sammy - April 30, 2008
Our team is the city of Cleveland?
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Just tuned in,
Yay Washburn!
Thank God the Flyers aren’t letting me down. Yet.
dbroncos31 - April 30, 2008
On the plus side, Wladimir's up from AAA.
So’s Clement, but WLAD’s starting.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
Course, the way this game's going, Clement will probably be in before too long.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
Yeah I saw that.
I like the single, dislike the double play.
Dislike the no-Clement sighting. He’s hitting a pinch-hit HR later
dbroncos31 - April 30, 2008
Why do we give a flying fuck about the Cavs game?
JI - April 30, 2008
I really really hate half the Wizard players with a passion
And I thoroughly enjoy watching Lebron play.
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
You enjoy watching him piss and moan after each and every play?
BHP - April 30, 2008
I'm not talking about the entire San Antonio team
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Point taken. Lebron as an individual is worse than Duncan and Co. as a group.
BHP - April 30, 2008
See Manu "I have pussitis" Ginobili
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Yeah that's gonna have to stop or he'll be my least favorite player
And seriously FUCK THE SPURS.
dbroncos31 - April 30, 2008
Hate the refs for encouraging it to happen
Matthew - April 30, 2008
I just hope the Hawks lose to the Celtics
Bill Simmons does not need another upset to bitch about for the next six months.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
I love Bill...but he deserves it...all Boston fans deserve it...they've gotten to cocky with the Sox and Pats.
SethGrandpa - April 30, 2008
I hope for the reverse
Matthew - April 30, 2008
C'MON!
bholdr - April 30, 2008
pile on boys, at least make it hilarious
JI - April 30, 2008
What the fuck at least get a couple runs off Lee.
This guy’s luck needs to take a walk
dbroncos31 - April 30, 2008
this is fucking rediculous
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Mercy rule inning
dbroncos31 - April 30, 2008
The wrong Mariner pitcher is seeing his ERA balloon
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Washburn?
JI - April 30, 2008
Needs to happen to Silva so that idiots shut up
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Silva>Bedard
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
at least they'll start to see that Washburn is really shitty
JI - April 30, 2008
WE HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH EVIDENCE OF THIS
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
but he had 7 K's
thenatural - April 30, 2008
SILVA TOO BUT MORONS ARE MORONS
JI - April 30, 2008
I HATE MORONS
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
YES THEY CAN BE GRATING
JI - April 30, 2008
Whenever I see a moron I long to hide in the hidden open thread
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Can we drop Baek and bring up R.A. yet?
SethGrandpa - April 30, 2008
Wilkerson doesn't get to that ball....
Sorry I’m bored already.
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
nice catch by WLAD
MFAN - April 30, 2008
Graham was smart enough to sleep through this one.
JI - April 30, 2008
These don't even look like terrible pitches
but I haven’t been paying too close attention.
Matthew - April 30, 2008
Then where am I supposed to get my opinions from?
JI - April 30, 2008
Get Bowden on the phone...
Baek, Washburn and Cairo for Nick Johnson or Lastings Milledge. We’ll throw in Harold Reynolds too.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
If only...
SethGrandpa - April 30, 2008
Bowden fleeced us.
JI - April 30, 2008
It'd be pretty cool.
If we can come back and tie this game….like they seem to do to us every blue moon.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
I'd be happy if they just scored some runs off Lee.
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
It'd take us three games to get to 8 runs...
Maybe 4
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
Hey look, the innings over. >_>
TheOptimist - April 30, 2008
Bah. To hell with this game.
Goose - April 30, 2008
You lasted longer than I did
and I got home in the fourth.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Free Feir and Dickey
SethGrandpa - April 30, 2008
What's the date we start worrying about fantasy teams more than our teams?
dkulich - April 30, 2008
Opening day
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Whenever you want
just don’t talk about them here.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Oh yeah sorry Jeff...
forgot about that rule.
dkulich - April 30, 2008
Maybe I should open a new fantasy baseball diary
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
False
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
No you shouldn't.
JI - April 30, 2008
GTA 4 makes me wish I had a 360...
Fuck this game…
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
If it makes you feel any better
I could play it when ever I want but have interest in doing so.
JI - April 30, 2008
Have the money but am way too much of a tightwad.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
roomate has a 360 and a big screen
but I don’t typically don’t play any post SNES video games
JI - April 30, 2008
Lucky bastard.
If my roommate had that I’d be mooching it off ‘em at this instant.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Yes good let's talk about bouncyball
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
BAHAHAH, how appropriate
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
HAHA AWESOME
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Right idea,
Wrong part of the field.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
unlucky today Beltre
Matthew - April 30, 2008
Yeah, NBA playoffs
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Fuck Cliff Lee
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Fuck George Bu....rton.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Go Flyers.
dkulich - April 30, 2008
So Cliff Lee is having a mighty strange fluke of a month
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Best shape of his career.
dkulich - April 30, 2008
Good K-BB ratios though.
JI - April 30, 2008
His peripherals are extraordinary
I just can’t figure out why.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
If you don't know, I don't know.
JI - April 30, 2008
Combo of him being unlucky last year and lucky this year
e.g., the jump in talent btw ‘07 and ‘08 isn’t much, if any
Matthew - April 30, 2008
amazing
no serperation b/t FB/CB?
no new arm angle?
etc
JI - April 30, 2008
err more seperation b/t FB/CH
JI - April 30, 2008
those are scouting observations
I cannot answer those. I deal with numbers only.
Matthew - April 30, 2008
[insert snarky remark about how numbers people never watch the games]
JI - April 30, 2008
He'd be better if he didn't give up that home run
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Yeah, like Joe Morgan- wait
Gomez - April 30, 2008
he's throwing more strikes
but missing a few more bats, but not many over ‘07
Matthew - April 30, 2008
Also throwing more FB's at the expense of CH's
hmm
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
I saw somewhere...
He changed something about his 2-seamer and its more of an out pitch now.
dkulich - April 30, 2008
Mariners Offense
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Was that warning track?
BHP - April 30, 2008
Yeah
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Wlad next inning!
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
So Baek still sucks fat, fat hindquarters
BHP - April 30, 2008
8-0
let’s talk about Jamey Carroll’s fundamentals. Those seem relevant.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
I wish we had Kaz Matsui
it’s be entertaining to listen to the announcers reference “anal fissures” without being able to say “anal fissures’.
JI - April 30, 2008
time to give the bench some playing time...
bholdr - April 30, 2008
Has Baek missed a bat since he came in?
thenatural - April 30, 2008
Baek's absolutely terrible in relief.
However, has been decent in both of his starts.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
And in relief the other day
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
With no one in the park..I think he thinks its a bullpen session
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Way to move him over, guy who looks like AK's sister
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
GIVE ME KNUCKLEBALLS
JI - April 30, 2008
Weirdest promotion ever
thenatural - April 30, 2008
OK that drum needs to stop
I’m trying to nap here
seattlebruin - April 30, 2008
poor Mac can't get an ounce of sleep tonight in the dugout
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Okay, we need a thread devoted to new Jefficons
This is the double-cockpunch.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
Jeff is too excited about that
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
I would be excited if I got to touch JJ's
errr…. nevermind
JI - April 30, 2008
Who's the first cockpuncher?
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Took this from the official LL images.
Didn’t want to try and attempt to edit out the other guy.
Wilder. - April 30, 2008
But who's the first dude?
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Pinch hit Clement here....
PLLLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEE
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
Lee's getting a big zone today it seems
That 1-1 pitch has been a ball for Washburn.
Matthew - April 30, 2008
PR Bloomquist!
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
PR Clement!
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
Turbo!
dkulich - April 30, 2008
3-2 send Turbo!!
ColeFitz - April 30, 2008
Huh
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
whoopdie shit
JI - April 30, 2008
You know what the Mariners like? Grittiness
You know what’s gritty? Outperforming your pythag
You know how to outperform your pythag? GET BLOWN OUT A LOT THANKS WHAT A CRAPPY GAME GUYS

CapSea - April 30, 2008
I think I can recall each AB.
Double, flyout, pull home run, double play, infield single, opposite field home run.
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Seriously,
That just made my day.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
YAY

PhilKenSebben - April 30, 2008
I just blew my wlad
Bhamster - April 30, 2008

One more home run than Wilkerson had all Year. He can go o-fer the rest of the year and he had a better season.
CapSea - April 30, 2008

armedpp - April 30, 2008
No, Kenji. That won't work as well for you.
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008

BrianL - April 30, 2008
I want me a Balentin jersey
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
You'll get the buyer's remorse
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Better than the buyers or Morse
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Just ask the Jose Cruz fans
youth and production mean nothing when you need middle relief help
JI - April 30, 2008
plus he'll probably change numbers
JI - April 30, 2008
I was referring to the typo in the name but that also works
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
I'm not real good with typos.
JI - April 30, 2008
I'd love to read things with your eyes
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
That sounds erotic for some reason
eyes are fine, getting things from my brain to my fingers is another story.
JI - April 30, 2008
I'd love to read things with your neurotransmitters
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Oh god
I just synapsed all over myself
thenatural - April 30, 2008
I audibly expressed my merriment
Gomez - April 30, 2008
I'm going to pretend I don't know what anybody is talking about.
JI - April 30, 2008
Thats probably the safest bet
thenatural - April 30, 2008
BUT JOSE CRUZ JR WAS A BUST !1!!!
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
LIES
he would be perfect in our outfield
let’s trade kenji for him & put him in left
darmok - April 30, 2008
Be more of a spaz Jensen
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
WLAD HURTS THIS TEAM BY KILLING RALLIES BY HITTING FUNK BLASTS
joof - April 30, 2008
WHAT A SELFISH PLAYER
We need a team of selfish players, like Barry Bonds.
Gomez - April 30, 2008

JI - April 30, 2008
THE THIRD BASE BEHIND THE PLATE
seattlebruin - April 30, 2008
Well...
My day is complete.
CapSea - April 30, 2008
If Clement comes up and hits a homer today
I’ll consider it a success.
BrianL - April 30, 2008
Sims on Batista's thoughts: 'I didn't want that groin muscle rolling down my right leg.'
Uh
Gomez - April 30, 2008
lol!
Omerta - April 30, 2008
Thats not his groin muscle.....errr
kentroyals5 - April 30, 2008
Hey, did you guys hear that A-Rod was on the DL?
.....
ThundaPC - April 30, 2008
I thought we all already knew he was on the down low?
Matthew - April 30, 2008
You've been sitting on that joke for 6
A: days
B: weeks
C: months
D: Aztec months
E: years
F: decades
G: Washburn contract lengths
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
6 Miguel Batista pitches with runners on base
Matthew - April 30, 2008
My God you're patient
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
JI - April 30, 2008
oh whatever
you know you laughed
Matthew - April 30, 2008
at Jeff's retort, yes
JI - April 30, 2008
(I do the inverse of that joke and it never gets laughs
and yet I continue to do it)
JI - April 30, 2008
explain the inverse. I'm curious.
Matthew - April 30, 2008
some one say "keep it on the DL"
and you say “disabled list?”
and then
[crickets]

So was this thing about Clement's "slow bat speed" incorrect?
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
Don't know
this sure does come up pretty often for something meant to be so innocuous.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Don't watch the speed of the bat.
Watch the way the wrists react when the player realizes they are making contact. A ton of a players power comes from their wrist action.
Sec 108 - April 30, 2008
Ernie Els says Hi.
Not that long looping swings are good for hitting a baseball, but Ernie Els generates a lot of power in his golf swing with a seemingly “lazy” motion. In golf they mention having effortless power instead of powerless effort – I.E. Griffey or Palmeiro
Edanger6 - April 30, 2008
Wasn't it either Dave Cameron or Jason Churchill that started this "slow bat speed" thing?
redwolf75 - April 30, 2008
It was a scout with whom Dave spoke
and it was (is) a completely reasonable point.
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
reasonable in what way?
Susheel Ramasahayam - April 30, 2008
That Clement was feeding on soft-tossing lefties who'd never make the show
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
How does that make his bat speed slow?
I ask this out of complete ignorance
Susheel Ramasahayam - April 30, 2008
It would mean that his bat was slow enough that he could only punish soft-tossing lefties
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
Was he not doing so well against hard throwers?
I would think that one would adjust his bat speed depending on who the pitcher is.
Susheel Ramasahayam - April 30, 2008
That was the theory
and you don’t adjust your bat speed. Your bat speed remains constant. If you have a quick bat, you can punish hard throwers and soft throwers. If you have a slow bat, you can only punish soft throwers (unless you correctly guess when a hard thrower is throwing a fastball).
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
isn't there an objective way to measure bat speed?
Susheel Ramasahayam - April 30, 2008
Not that we have access to
Jeff Sullivan - April 30, 2008
its all subjective then?
I just can’t wrap my head around someone who can hit a 92mph pitch 400 feet, having a slow bat. I guess its possible.
Susheel Ramasahayam - April 30, 2008
I'm not the resident physics major...
But a lot of distance on those swings is supplied by the fast ball as it introduces itself to the bat.
Frosty Raptor - April 30, 2008
The point was that he
lost bat speed, or that he’s always had substandard bat speed?
