Lookout Landing

Stomach Punched

If it feels like we're losing is extraordinary fashion a lot more often this year, it's because we have been.

April 1: WE = 87.2%
Done 3-1 entering the bottom of the 8th, the Mariners gain three runs thanks to errors by the best middle infield in baseball Michael Young and Ian Kinsler and got the lead run across thanks to a wild pitch. They had the bases loaded with 2 outs too but a Brad Wilkerson pop out ended the threat for further runs. Never the less, it seemed safe with J.J. coming up. Nope. A single and a Josh Hamilton homerun put the Ms to bed with a 5-4 loss.

April 6: 94.9%
Felix tossed 8 shutout innings in his second start of the year, giving way to the pen in the 9th with a 2-0 lead. The M's had 2 outs in the ninth with the bases empty, albeit down to a one-run lead when single, single, walk, wild pitch, single ended the game.

April 18: N/A
Torii Hunter

April 23: 82.6%
The Ms put a couple runs up early against Daniel Cabrera while Carlos Silva cruised through five. Silva hadn't allowed a hit through the first four frames than escaped massive danger in the fifth when Aubrey Huff couldn't figure out how to run. It felt like we had been granted a reprieve. Then the sixth inning rolled around. Single, triple, RBI groundout. Bam, game tied, except we already knew it was over. A Nick Markakis first pitch HR off RRS in the 8th sealed the deal.

April 24: 92.4%
Ms race out to 5-0 lead. Give up trying to score. Let Orioles climb back in. Orioles take lead. Ichiro ties game back up with 2-run bomb! Three batters later Brian Roberts no-doubts Sean Green in the 8th.

April 25: N/A
Batista is wild, hurt, puts us in early 3-0 hole and departs in the 2nd. Baek comes on and tosses 6+ innings of 1-hit relief while the Ms gasp to get back into the game. They climb within one run and load the bases with one out for Yuniesky Betancourt who takes a 1-0 pitch off the plate away at below his knees, and bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.

April 27: 88.2%
Ms grab an early 2-0 lead, Felix looks uncredible through 3 and settles into a groove through 7. Then; walk, double, walk, single, walk, single, K, single and it's 4-2 A's.

May 1: 83.2%
J.J.'s clearly not healthy. Fuck this season.
I even thought this just felt like a win. I smiled knowingly when Richie hit it out in the 10th. I had felt confident the entire later innings. I was confident with J.J. I was sure he was going to come up and put the fears instilled in that Oakland game to rest. And for one batter he did. Kudos to Batista, Rhodes, Morrow, Richie and Ichiro.

That's why we play the games.
I hate playing games

more simulations please

we have .475 winning ercentage in those too!
But at least they're done quickly
That would be a sexy improvement
That's right, it would.

| >:(

if only it were still spring training and none of this mattered.
In hindsight I loved spring training and would welcome more of it
No, you wouldn't.

They were below .500 there, too.

I think what you mean is “moved to the Cal League”. I’m pretty sure Vidro and Kenji could hit .250 at High Desert…

I wouldn't care if they were below .200 in spring training

that’s the beauty of spring training.

Easy solution: call the regular season "summer training".
Fuck playing the games.

Give me Strat-O-Matic.

I want to talk about my Strat-o-matic team

I find it to be fascinating.

My Strat-O-Matic team

just shut out the Mariners.

Well.

This was fun.

If by "fun" you mean "having a tire iron in the groin"

then yes, this season has been bunches of fun so far.

Stomach Punch?

More like a cockpunch. A double cockpunch.

Those blowout losses of 2007 are looking pretty good right about now.
Appropriate:

Though I can’t tell if we’re the girl or the guy.

The baby
I think we're more the gazelle

Are you kidding me? We get eaten by a guy falling sideways?!

You know who has it worst in that comic?

The guy who has to listen to the girl’s bullshit. Nobody cares about your personal romance.

One other reason I love Lookout Landing:

You assholes introduced me to XKCD. Easily the funniest internet comic on the planet. And it would suck if it were done in anything other than stick figure style.

I love those comics

and I think this is true for “Ability to Enjoy Watching Mariners’ as well as programming:

Windows ME...

::shudder::

Windows 2000...

:shudderer::

Windows 2000 was a great OS.

Incredibly stable.

Fine.

Windows Vista

::shudderer::

And to cap it off, I’m on a vista computer right now. Note to self, next time, “newer” does not mean better.

Now that is a pig of an OS.
Tell me about it. Cry.
Upgrade to XP.
Not bad enough to warrant that drastic of a measure.
It's worth it.

Trust me.

My computer has 2 gigs of ram and a pretty good processor, so I don't experience

anywhere close to the slowdown of some other people I know with vista. I’ll survive.

Still worth it.
Vista almost made me switch to Linux

Almost.

I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago

paid extra to have XP as the OS versus Vista.

I wonder how many people who bitch about Vista actually have a clean install
Rule of thumb on Windows OS's

Always use the OS that the machine shipped with (system packs are possibly OK, depending).

Full version upgrade paths are never adequately tested (because the number of potential hardware/driver/etc. combos approaches infinity) and the bugs are considered lower priority to fix (because maybe 10% of people do a version upgrade).

My comp shipped with vista, and it's basically fine.

I however get why others are bitching about it.

Cause other people are bad at knowing whats wrong with their computers
More like...

... people think OMG NEW OS MUST UPGRADE.

You know what? Your operating system doesn’t stop running when a new version comes out. In general, you SHOULDN’T upgrade critical software without a highly compelling reason, which is another rule of thumb for computer software in general. Not even the people who WORK with it for a living can 100% predict what’s going to happen on a particular machine’s combination of drivers+peripherals+hardware.

I just wanted to sound Mac.
Well...

I have experience with Windows and Mac, so I can tell you how each of them suck in unique ways.

Well...

the engineering effort for Vista was a giant botched abortion. Not a lot of engineering discipline to keep focused on features getting done in a timely fashion, there were giant amounts of work that basically got ripped out, at one point they scrapped the new kernel for the Windows Server 2003 kerne because the new kernel sucked so badly, and so on, there are some “Oh, HEY, let’s make it look like Mac OS X” things in it, etc.

That and they basically had to take a bunch of people and throw them at various Windows security initiatives and XP SP2… well, it was just ugly.

I'm excited to start trying Windows Seven soon
My comp shipped with Vista, and it has lag issues

It often works fine, but there are too many periods where it doesn’t.

As long as you decrapify the install, sure.
So... Morrow for closer?

At least we’ll expect the walks.

I think I'm going to console myself

with an episode of the A-Team.

I'm going to watch Three Sheets
I'm going to become three sheets
Screw the Mariners. I just want to know how everyone's fantasy team is doing
I drafted the Mariners 25 man roster.

I’m not doing too good.

Don't deny it, we all know you're watching Mona Lisa Smile...
I actually have not seen that. Watching Alpha Dog right now
Solid movie.

Shitty reviews, but I liked it. JT isn’t a bad actor

JT is actually one of my favorite celebrities. He looks like 1 of only 2 funny people in the Love Guru (the other being Tosh)

and he’s been nothing short of hilarious when he’s hosted SNL. Also, I like Ben Foster, so that’s good. I’m about 30 minutes in to Alpha Dog and I still don’t understand the plot

So how much longer till everyone else realizes that LFOJL is actually female?
When it's no longer funny to make fun of him/her
I thought thats why we kept Coach around

And why Jeff has you here

I like to think Jeff keeps me around for my winning personality and rugged good looks
Commiseration purposes re: Ottawa, mainly
Boy did we that this season
You look like Mike Fisher and type like JI

dammit ningwers, just be yourself.

MFANitis is spreading to the rest of LL
The Fish beard was a tribute

The stupidity is pure Nick

That's ice cold
Felix Day is on Saturday

If I make it through tomorrow night alive, I’ll give you more than enough chances for revenge.

New York is a hell of a town.

Waking up next to Felix Saturday morning?

I'm going to scour Craigs list tommorow night

M4WWW
Big boned hispanic 22yr old looking 4 bitches to teach how to sit the fuck down.

*looking for loyal peons
coincidence?

As soon as I was finished with the title of your comment, my Pandora playlist changes songs.

Now playing: Fat-Bottomed Girls

just four?
Its a game night
gotta fly straight
Time to pretend that my MLB 08 The Show team is the real one!!!!

The M’s are like 50-3!!! Beltre has a 1.300 OPS!!! Felix is 11-0 with a 0.00 ERA!!!!!

Fuck this team!!!!!!

Maybe these heartbreaking losses now means soulcrushing wins later?????

Please, God?

What kind of difficulty do you have it on?
Am I the only one that thinks it isn't fun at all when things are that easy in games?
wrong

playing them on hard involves too much time investment

I like to see how many runs in can score in a game. It’s not if you win, it’s how much can you win by.

I concur

one time I got a triple-triple with Kobe Bryant in NBA Live 05 – 100 pts, 100 ast, 100 stl. It was not easy, lemme tell ya

Obviously you don't remember 2001.
I prefer wins more than I want excitement

Get enough wins, and the excitement comes no matter what.

oh, you were talking about the video game

nvm

Yeah

I used to like when I’d get a sports game and I got enough of the hang of it that I could play a competitive game against the CPU… but hated when I got so good that I was routinely beating the CPU’s ass.

I have shit reaction times so I strike out once an inning. It prevents me from getting really good
Only once?

I struggle to score two runs in a game. I’m an awesome pitcher, though, and my relievers constantly whine about not getting enough work. So I win a lot of 1-0 games (I suicide squeeze every chance I get).

I actually made this up. I only have a player in Road to the Show mode

Franchises take way too long…RTTS is great because its pretty quick.

Also, normally I start out on whatever the default is and then adjust as I play.

Except on my PSP, where I only care about enjoyment as I only play it on trips and stuff

I'm not sure I want to be involved in a soulcrushing win

Does it involve King Awesome hitting a homerun that derails the train outside Safeco resulting in a unstoppable avalanche of death and mayhem as the cars plow through those unfortunate enough to have left the game early?

Hey, if it wins the game....
Simulated seasons within a baseball game is just as fascinating as your fantasy team*

*Unless its baseball mogul.

In other news, Viagra appears to be a cure all for jet lag...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/business/businessspecial/30circad.html?em&ex=1209873600&en=100f64933082ffc6&ei=5087%0A

Is that jet lag in your pocket or are you just happy to see us
Does it cure not being able to hit?

If so, order the M’s a case or three.

Oh, they'll be able to hit SOMETHING....
And in Washburn's case

it’ll be underage, right?

I really hope that this one run games thing turns around, because we've lost some ridiculous heartbreakers this season

and they seem to get worse every time. Never the typical fall behind, fall further behind, lose losses… but the take the lead, hold the lead behind good pitching, inexplicably surrender lead in the 8th inning type games.

God I want this shit to stop. Of course, we’re not going to do any better in close games until we start scoring runs either.

At least all of the starters except Washburn have looked decent to good

remember how last year through August

we had lost like one game when we had the lead in the 8th inning? We’ve lost like 4 already this year.

So, basically, 2008 = Year of Cockpunch

Awesome.

I think the worst thing about this team

is that the potential to be good is actually there. Last season was just a pleasant surprise, but this year we have very good starting pitching, and their personal results so far have been excellent (besides Washburn and Bedard’s little stint on the DL).

Even the offense doesn’t seem entirely hopeless. As bad as it’s been, adding Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien to the mix could provide a huge shot in the arm, since Wilkerson and Johjima haven’t hit at all this season – I think they have the potential to at the least not suck, especially given how slow Ichiro has started and that he always picks it up in May.

A few bounces here or there, or some less shitty offense, and maybe we’re 4-5 in one-run games instead of 1-8. 4-5 means were 16-13 overall, and not in half bad shape given the slow start of the O and bullpen meltdowns and Bedard on the DL and Wash looking pretty done.

Oh well… I don’t think the rest of the season will be this painful. Hopefully we can either get a little luckier or start getting blown out so I can stop watching the game in the third inning when we’re down 14-3.

My favorite part of last year were the death spirals and subsequent random revivals

This year it just seems like a slow but steady death.

So I was just IMDB surfing to waste time and I think I found one of the greatest names of all time:

Moon Bloodgood

I saw her in 8 Below

Not only was it a chick flick.

It was a dog flick.

Born in: Anaheim

go figure.

Big McLargeHuge
At this rate.

We’re on pace for about 43 more stomach punches this season.
