"Defense is a big part of our game, and we have been really sloppy,'' McLaren said. "It is something we take pride in. We have to do a better job. When it is your strength and it works as your weakness, that's not good."
Bottom 1
Ian Kinsler hits a sharp groundball to Adrian Beltre's left. Beltre picks the ball, then bobbles it, and by the time he recovers and throws to first, Kinsler is safe.
Bottom 2
Brandon Boggs sends a line drive into left field in the vicinity of Raul Ibanez, but Ibanez is slow in pursuit, eventually diving and having the ball tip off his glove for a double. The next batter - Gerald Laird - bounces a grounder right by a backhanding Yuniesky Betancourt at short for an RBI single.
Bottom 3
With two on and one out, David Murphy chops a could-be 4-6-3 grounder to Jose Lopez, but Lopez sits back instead of charging the ball, and Murphy beats out the throw to first for a fielder's choice.
Bottom 4
With men on the corners, Felix puts a fastball in the dirt right behind the plate that bounces away from Kenji Johjima, allowing a runner to score and the other to advance to second.
Bottom 6
Gerald Laird hits a line drive single into left field, but Raul Ibanez fumbles the ball, allowing Laird to advance to second.
Bottom 8
With one down, Gerald Laird chops a grounder to Yuniesky Betancourt, but the throw to first pulls Miguel Cairo off the bag. Later, with two on, Ramon Vazquez sharply grounds a single into right to load the bases, but the ball sneaks under Wladimir Balentien's glove, allowing everyone to advance and making it a 4-2 ballgame.
----------
Eight miscues. Seven if you think Yuni didn't have a chance on Laird's single. Seven or eight miscues that cost the Mariners four or five outs and 13 or 14 bases. While we obviously can't know for sure, one could make a pretty convincing argument that, had the Mariners played good team defense tonight, the Rangers would've only score one run. Instead they scored five and won by a comfortable margin.
Generally when I criticize this team's defense, I'm referring to its overall lack of range, but these guys also seem to make way too many stupid little mistakes on routine plays. Tonight we saw the worst of both worlds. Beltre probably should've made that play in the first. A real left fielder catches Boggs' fly in the second. A better shortstop might then pick Laird's grounder and throw him out at first. A more aggressive second baseman turns Murphy's grounder into a double play. A catcher who knows how to block the ball instead of stab at it keeps Felix's fastball in front of him. Anyone older than 8 ought to keep Laird at first base there in the sixth. And, of course, the eighth just brought another pair of mental mistakes. This has gotten so far beyond bad that it's bordering on criminal, and the worst part is that, aside from things like fumbled grounders in the outfield, I can't envision a scenario in which it gets markedly better. God only knows what a Griffey acquisition would do to us. The only defensive highlight all game was a play that Felix turned in by himself. That's bad. This team is just hemorrhaging runs in the field that it can't afford to allow.
I guess it's not that big of a deal in the short-term, since the season's pretty much over and the team's record from here on out is of limited importance. But it bothers me to no end that a front office incapable of pitcher evaluation is similarly so incapable of evaluating defense. The gloves are killing us, and they've been killing us for a while. They're not the reason we're losing, but they're *a* reason we're losing, and yet this rarely gets mentioned as a problem.
Defense matters.
DEFENSE MATTERS.
I know I beat this drum all the time, and some of you are probably getting sick of hearing about it, but I'm not going to stop until more people understand just what kind of impact a team's defense really has on its record. It's huge. It's absolutely huge. And anyone who doesn't get that by now just doesn't get the game.
Biggest Contribution: RRS, +5.9%
Biggest Suckfest: Yuniesky Betancourt, -19.9%
Most Important AB: Johjima double, +13.5%
Most Important Pitch: Kinsler DP, +11.6%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): +7.5%
Total Contribution by Hitters: -57.5%
Total Contribution by Opposition: 0.0%
(What is this chart?)
We lost. Felix's command has completely and utterly disappeared. 121 different players have at least twice as many walks as our shortstop and second baseman combined. I'd love to see a nightmare tonight that could top the one I'm living during the day.

Heh
That’s pretty bad when RRS has the highest contribution…

It's too bad patient Lopez has gone away.
This team in general has just been sucking.

He's not impatient per se
He’s just not taking walks. He’s got 3BB but only 9 K’s…..basically he’s getting deep into counts just refusing to take a walk when he gets there. He’d rather foul off pitches till he can get a hit….

All-bat no glove all-time team
C Mike Piazza
1B Frank Thomas
2B Alfonso Soriano
3B Aramis Ramirez
SS Hanley Ramirez

CF Barry Bonds
RF Albert Belle (he sucked at Defense right?)
Would this team’s defense be bad enough to somehow cost them the playoffs?
BrettJMiller - May 13, 2008
If Albert Belle doesn't qualify
You could plug Jose Canseco into RF
Fin - May 13, 2008
Belle played right in Baltimore.

Given an average pitching staff, a team with no defense would allow 1000+ runs
they’d probably finish over .500, but the playoffs wouldn’t be a sure thing by any means.

Worst part of this is that this organization is convinced that this is a good defensive team playing bad defense. In realitly, it’s a bad defensive team playing bad defense.
In fact, the FO is currently convinced that this is a really good team that’s just playing poorly.
Oh yea, and so much for assembling a pitching staff that stops losing streaks. So far the only 2 wins of the month happened when Washburn and Batista pitched. Yes, our stoppers have been the 4-5 Cardiac Arrest.

Easy now.
Geoff hasn’t exactly been on a roll as of late, but he’s still a better beat writer than Hickey and Street.
That said, I can’t really blame Felix for not wanting to talk to the media today. He has had a rough couple of starts in a row. Aside from getting rocked in New York, he just hasn’t been getting run support. That’s got to be wearing him down.
BrianL - May 13, 2008
No, not easy now.
Fuck him. Fuck him.
I’m tired of his shit. He fucking argues with the blogosphere all the goddamn time. He says stupid shit. And now he’s fucking bitching because Felix doesn’t want to talk to him or the rest of goddamn media. Hey Baker, take a fucking hint you idiot. Saying he’s done very little in the game just because he doesn’t want to fucking talk to you? Bullshit.

I knew I should of screenshotted that shit.
Basically it was him bitching that Felix didn’t want to talk to him or any of the other media members and that he hid in the “off limits section” from them. He said something about them having deadlines and that in his “11 years of doing this” that he had never seen a 22 year old act this way. He also said that he’s got all the talent in the world, but has done nothing in this league. Said he was hiding, blah blah blah.

Then it became:...well ok you’re wrong Baker, but unlike the rest, you look like you’ll be able to learn and understand why.
Then after that:No, you’re wrong Baker. And you’re not getting it. What’s your problem?
Then:Ok, now you’re just being stupid.
Then:And now your being a dick to the rest of the sphere. It’s like you are arguing with us on purpose. Time to take you off the reading list.
Today:Fuck Geoff Baker.

Garces - May 14, 2008
Huh. It got taken down quickly.
But I saw it, too. And Goose is right—it was in a very childish tone and just sounded like whining because he couldn’t get a quote for his story.
Baseball depends on media, and vice versa, and I understand Geoff’s frustration to a degree, I guess. But Felix has the right to do whatever the hell he wants with the media, and if that means hide from reporters for a day, so be it. Calling him out as having “done nothing in this league” is pretty ridiculous.
Teej - May 13, 2008

Well he didn't get the full thing, but he got some of it.
Thank you Frosty Raptor!
Goose - May 14, 2008
I see where it comes off as whiny and a bit petty but..
It is his job. The players know that, and are asked to deal with the media. They do not have to be elaborate, long interviews, but they can be short or whatever as long as they talk to them once in awhile a la Bedard.
I think he is just saying it would be one thing if it was Pedro Martinez doing it, but Felix has barely thrown 500 innings in the majors and shouldn’t be acting like a prima donna.
I guess what I am saying is that while I don’t agree with him, I understand his frustration.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
It's not like some generic quote from Felix is going to make or break his game recap.
JI - May 14, 2008

ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Goose - May 14, 2008

Katal LM - May 14, 2008
I don't give a shit if it's his job.
It is a COURTESY that he is allowed in the PLAYERS clubhouse to talk to the players. He is a reporter. They are the players. He should cater to them and not the other way around. He should be grateful that he gets to talk to them at all. They don’t have to. Like you said, they are ASKED to. If they don’t want to talk to them. Oh goddamn well.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Fair enough, but one can still understand his frustration.
Perhaps he came to his senses, realized he went too far, and deleted his post.
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
Frustration doesn't mean you can be a little whiny bitch.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Ok..but you could say Felix is doing the same thing by whining in the corner.
It isnt hard to walk out and talk for 20 seconds, or say “i didnt have it today, end of story” and walk off.
He doesnt HAVE to. But he comes off better.
Thats about it i think.

Well, you personally,
but i could go and cut and paste responses of his to TONS of posts.
He made an entire post replying to questions and criticisms.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
I don't disagree with this.
But he cherry picks the questions. Besides Adam and occasionally faceplant, he tends to only respond to really easy questions, like “Is Vidro’s knee okay?”
CapSea - May 14, 2008
He has to cherry pick
consider the volume
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Don't disagree. That's not my point.
I’m disagreeing that if I write anything in the comments section, there is any likelihood he will write back to it. There is none because he cherry picks his responses to either easy questions or two members that have been there an unbelievably long time. Ergo, there is no reason to address my concerns in order to expect a response.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
I can't make a really informed comment since I do not read all of the reponses to his posts but..
I do see him respond to Adam a lot.
In his defense, the few times i have glanced through the comments Adam is one of the few coherent and reasonable posters. He does get a lot of “FIRE BAVASI!! WHY DONT WE FIRE HIM AND I WANT GRIFEFY BACK NOW!!!” ... that sort of garbage.
I think it also depends on when he reads it, when he is posting his next thing, if he feels like he has addressed the issue, that sort of thing.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
He responds to me
Maybe you should be more awesome.
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
I've probably written some of my best comments there. Using numbers even.
Since here you guys tend to cover everything, and it is largely unnecessary. I don’t expect a response, so I’m not saying I’m mad, pissed or disappointed. I’m saying there is no reason to ask him anything or challenge him on his blog because you’re not going to get a response. When I comment on there it is solely to explain a point, not to hear anything back regarding it.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
Seriously?
Of course not, but he could just answer with one word answers, passive aggressively showing that he is not interested in talking about it and then he could have excused himself after 3-5 questions.
Lots of players do this, it is not unusual when they do not want to talk to the media.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
The phrase "I don't want to talk to the media"
in my interpretation means “I don’t want to talk to the media. Nothing. Not one word.”
Goose - May 14, 2008
Right
But you are being paid a lot of money, and they just want to ask you some questions. It isn’t like they are appearing on Meet The Press, they are just giving some quotes to some reporters and talking about the game so their fans can figure out why one of the best young pitchers in the league had a WHIP close to 2 against the Rangers.
I just don’t agree, I think the guy can complain if he feels like Felix should talk to him, he has been doing it long enough.
personally, i dont care about what Felix did, i am just playing devil’s advocate.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
I know.
And I’m just putting myself in Felix’s shoes.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Yeah, I think it is easy to see both sides.
Maybe Felix will write a whiny bulletin on his myspace to even things out.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Felix has every right not to speak, and Geoff has every right to be annoyed
I think that’s what it comes down to here, pretty much.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Yeah
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
I'll concede that.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Also, as stupid as it seems
since player quotes are usually worthless, I’m sure that in situations like today Geoff’s under considerable pressure from his boss(es) to get Felix to say something. An article would look weird if it just skipped him entirely.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
And I understand that.
But he simply could of said something along the lines of “Felix, who struggled again today, wasn’t in much of a mood to talk to us tonight. Maybe we can get him tomorrow” Or something along those lines.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Eh
You aren’t going to write something like that and publish it though.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
So instead you write and publish an article
that has you whining like a little bitch?
Ok.
Goose - May 14, 2008
What are you talking about?
He is not publishing anything of the sort.
It was a blog post.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
On a Seattle Times newspaper website.
Goose - May 14, 2008
Good point
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Right, but the standard has been set long ago to talk to the media, if only for a moment.
There is a reason people get reputations like Bedard and Bonds. They are dicks to the media.
It is not an isolated incident, so the guy can complain if he wants to, if he feels like this 22 year old kid is being petulant he can write something about it on his blog. It isnt like he is calling him out in a story.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
I wouldn't exactly call Bedard a dick to the media.
It’s not like he’s insulting them—he’s just brusque.
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
Right, but you have to admit It is his reputation
It probably isnt justified, but like Baker has shown, it makes their job easier when players talk to them.

JAH - May 14, 2008
Which is s standard I've always disagreed with.
Their jobs comes with the privilege of being able to talk to these guys. If it’s obvious Felix doesn’t want to talk to them, then he should of moved on instead of pressing the issue and then whining on his blog about it,
Goose - May 14, 2008
That's cool, you can disagree with the standard
I guess I just do not think it is fair to rip him for complaining about it when that is just the way it is.
I’m sure it is nice to get a quote from the starting pitcher from the game, even if it is just for 15 seconds and frustrating if they are avoiding you.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
I would counter that
With Felix’s job comes with the privilege of being a major league baseball player, and he can get over himself for three minutes and do what is expected of him.
Garces - May 14, 2008
Geoff Baker doesn't bug all that much.
Although he seems to have a thing against young players.
He had a column a while back saying that Wlad and Clement NEED to produce. Well, yea….so does the rest of the team. Those two aren’t exactly A-Rod and Bonds.
Then, even before Felix’s start, he talks about how he “let his team down” last start and needs to rebound. He wasn’t worried about Bedard though, oh no.
So while Bedard gets a pass for his abysmal 2.0 inning outing (6ER) where he coughs up a 5-run lead, Felix gets taken to task for putting up 6.0 mediocre innings (3R, 2ER) in a game where he never HAD the lead….oh, I guess cause he’s not really talking to reporters. Whatever, Felix is stubborn. Even so, if you swapped the starts, we would’ve had a much better chance of winning yesterdays game (if only Baseball were that simple).
ThundaPC - May 14, 2008
I think he has a Canadian bias towards Bedard
Fin - May 14, 2008
Is that why Bedard is blurry?
CapSea - May 14, 2008
precisely
Fin - May 14, 2008
Haha, I like this
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
In Baker's defense
it can’t be easy to hang around this team and write about them every day when they’re losing. I imagine it can get stressful and incredibly frustrating, and when you have a player actively interfere with a job for which you have a deadline…well I don’t blame him for being annoyed. I don’t like the tone, but I understand it.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Yeah...
I agree with this, essentially.
I mean pointing out that Felix should, basically, respect them since he is only 22 is kind of the reason he is doing this… he is only 22 and is frustrated and embarassed with his performance.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Well, that makes sense.
Especially since, quite often, Baker will make reference to past Toronto Blue Jays teams and how the Mariners seem different from those teams.
Baker seemed to have a good time covering this team last year since they were contending. Now they have the worst record in the Majors.
ThundaPC - May 14, 2008
I understand that he's upset, but whining about it on the Times' blog is bushleague
Plus, Felix has accomplished more than most players do in their entire careers.
JI - May 14, 2008
I don't know if that is true, that is a pretty big statement
but, yeah, it is whiny and comes off pretty mingy. He can write what he wants though.

and I find out that Rex Fucking Huddler is the color guy in the game.
Fuck me.
BrianL - May 13, 2008
At least it's not Steve Lyons
Gotta be zen about this man.
Frosty Raptor - May 13, 2008
I dont play with sound i just listen to music
The game kicks ass though. Make sure you grab the roster updates.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
After viewing this game my dad is finally starting to come around to the fact that Raul is the worst left fielder ever.
JI - May 13, 2008
It's too bad because he is raking the ball. I really don't understand why they cant shift
Wlad to left and Ibanez to right. If he has that fragile of an ego then he can go fuck himself because he is being paid to perform, and he can’t play any fucking defense and it is costing the team games.
If it isn’t that and it is just McLaren scared to do anything then fuck him too, stop being a pussy, your team sucks you need to make some fucking changes before you lose your job.
This whole organization is fucking pathetic, sans the international scouting department. Fuck Felix right now too, he has the best arsenal in the league and he let up 6 hits and walked 5 batters in 6 innings. Fucking learn to pitch, if Greg Maddux had the type of stuff Felix did he would be untouchable. It isn’t just about trying to throw your pitches by people, you need to use your head.
Can’t believe i am going to watch this team all summer.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
We need a pitching coact who actually does something, like Dave Duncan
or Leo Mazzone.
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
coach*
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
The best hting I can say about having Dave Duncan
would be that the team would never sign a shit pitcher to a 4 year deal ever again.
JI - May 14, 2008
Yeah, no kidding. Someone who...I dont know...COACHES.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Mel Stottlemeyer's nephew tried to get me in on pyramid scheme last night.
Robert - May 14, 2008
They like to call that Multi-Level Marketing now.
Because somehow they think that is less annoying.
Sec 108 - May 14, 2008
Once I get to the third level
My loved ones and me will be able to quit our day jobs.
Robert - May 14, 2008
So what level is the nephew at?
Or is pitching it not a job? More of a hobby?
The Alaskan - May 14, 2008
He's never met his uncle supposedly
which is strange because they live in the same city.
Robert - May 14, 2008
Ibanez shouldn't play the outfield at all.
JI - May 14, 2008
No, but obviously the team is too fucking scared of him to sit his ass down or DH him
so stick him somewhere else. Put him at fucking first, just get him the hell out of left it is so awful watching him.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Raul is open to DHing.
JI - May 14, 2008
Uh, not from anything I have read. If you can show me what makes you think this, that would be nice, but..
all i remember reading is how he wants to play OF.
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
It makes too much fucking sense to slot him in at 1B
and bring up Reed to play LF.
He even has 1B experience—it’s not like he’s never played there before.
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
Or platoon Richie and Ibanez
Then I think we would have a real two headed best. Almost like our own Mark Teixeria
but no, we don’t want to hurt either one of their feelings now.
Fin - May 14, 2008
Yeah, feelings are more important than winning.
.
.
.
.
.
:(
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
It's a fairly new development
but there was an article or blurb earlier this year about him being tired and wanting to keep fresh
JI - May 14, 2008
Raul Ibanez anticipated being the DH coming into 2007
until the Vidro trade.
Matthew - May 14, 2008
I still assert that this was the crowning masterpiece to our legacy of stupid trades.
JI - May 14, 2008
I still say HoRam was worse
But, yeah, the Vidro debacle was almost equally stupid.
PositivePaul - May 14, 2008
I think the Tino Maritnez trade is underrated.
JI - May 14, 2008
Especially since it included Jeff Nelson at his peak
Sec 108 - May 14, 2008
End the season now please
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
That would save me lots of hours of futility this summer..
ASUBoyd - May 14, 2008
Game threads are more interesting when the team is h ilarious.
JI - May 14, 2008
Yeah.
And right now the team’s just sad.
Goose - May 14, 2008
I was kinda talking about our draft position and team playoff position in the AL East
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
MLB needs a draft lottery in Stasberg years
JI - May 14, 2008
Fuck that, then I'd have to wait off on buying a Strasburg 37 jersey until lottery order was settled
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
I hope the Padres feel the same way.
This weekend’s series has the potential to be the most awesome thing in the history of baseball.
JI - May 14, 2008
No mention of having the desire to lose over at the Padres SBN blog.
They must not want Strasburg as badly.
Fin - May 14, 2008
They're doing it wrong.
or their just jealous that their hated rivals want it more
JI - May 14, 2008
See, I'm really rooting for SD now
because it relives Strasburg pressure on us. If Pittsburgh or Washington or someone like that gets the pick, there’s a chance they could pass on him. No way does SD pass on the hometown who grew up a Padres fan and throws 101 mph.
Go Strasburg!
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
The Giants won!
they’re pulling away from us, those sly bastards.
MFAN - May 14, 2008
3 games back of the Dodgers!
I’m rooting for the Giants to take 2nd place. It would be hilarious.
Goose - May 14, 2008
I often wish LL had a IRC chat so these threads would actually load.
PhilKenSebben - May 14, 2008
(for you)
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
Actually...
Even though I’ve upgraded my system as much as I possibly can, I STILL avoid the game threads precisely because they take a metric f-tonne of forever to load, let alone refresh (and auto-refresh hasn’t ever jived with me).
IRC chat for game threads would be way, way better.
PositivePaul - May 14, 2008
A chat window would be a nightmare
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Apples are great huh?
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
It's not so much my Apple
As it is my Microsoft router, and the fact that at home I’m sitting about as far away from the thing as I can be without completely losing signal.
PositivePaul - May 14, 2008
Meanwhile, the Rays are in 1st place in the AL East!
Gomez - May 14, 2008
Damn it's too bad we're not in the NL
then we’d be the polar opposites – last place, different league, cross-coast division, incompetently run
