I haven't been watching this game, thanks to work and all that fun stuff, but it would appear from the line score that our corner outfield defense is awesomely bad.
he’s not going anywhere. It’s the periphery we have to improve. I have high hopes for this Liebkartoffel character but right now it’s mostly potential.

Silva: I’m really hungry I could really use a hot dog, could you grab me one? Mac: Sorry Carlos, Vidro ate em’ all we’re going to have to take you out.
That was ball 4 Ichiro...
redwolf75 - May 14, 2008
wow, the Rangers announcers are basically calling Ichiro out
MFAN - May 14, 2008
Texans are racist.
hcoguy - May 14, 2008
Ichiro hasa league average 299 BABIP
Which is way low for his career. Any ideas why?
laxtonto - May 14, 2008
Because suck is contagious
esoteric - May 14, 2008
How many bunts are we going to hit foul?
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008

It’s that dull.

d) all of the above
CapSea - May 14, 2008
what are you, DOV?
Matthew - May 14, 2008
I don't understand this joke, dept.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
Well it's not A...
Why would you want to stay up and watch this team, I choose BC.
ColeFitz - May 14, 2008
laxtonto - May 14, 2008
Well.. that's true.
I was trying to make a “coffee because this team puts me to sleep” reference, but I suppose your point is valid.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
Eh, that makes sense
D it is.
ColeFitz - May 14, 2008
JI they're already discussing your impending free commenting status over there at HH
in this FanPost
I worked hard on this and Jeff closed comments in the old post so I’m posting it anyway, dead subthread or not
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
ITS A TRAP!
JI - May 14, 2008
No!! I said it went to HH!
:(
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
Obviously I'd like to return home to VEB one day

JI - May 14, 2008
You could always just demand a trade there using your 10/5 rights

seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
I dislike the idea of half my brain being retarded
Robert - May 14, 2008
We're not re-signing JI in the offseason?
CapSea - May 14, 2008
We have a blog option
I hear Jeff is in negotiations with other posters, though.
Garces - May 14, 2008
Look I want JI around here as much as you do
but no at the price he would command. Not wanting JI is wrong.
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
This blog does have a history of signing declining veterans past their peak.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a six year option already on the table.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
DO. NOT. WANT.
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
I want the Brad Wilkerson deal.
3 million to go away forever.
JI - May 14, 2008
I think there's a more lucrative six-year deal on the table, as Librocrat pointed out
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
I think RJ Anderson will take good care of me if I shave, cut my hair, and change my avitar.

Different sport, stupid.

You think you're better than Brian Jordan?
JI - May 14, 2008
I thought you said Robert Jordan
Cause I’m not dead yet thus making me better

JI is part of our core
he’s not going anywhere. It’s the periphery we have to improve. I have high hopes for this Liebkartoffel character but right now it’s mostly potential.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Call up Coach Owens!
Garces - May 14, 2008
Coach Owens has been a massive bust
we’re looking into trading him for Dewon Brazelton or Sean Burroughs.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
a bust?
that implies there were high hopes for him.
MFAN - May 14, 2008
He had a lot of energy, really carried a spark
unfortunately it hasn’t sustained.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Position change?
Robert - May 14, 2008
Bat boys aren't actually ont he roster.
JI - May 14, 2008
We could make him the kid that JT Snow saves
Robert - May 14, 2008
I approve of this idea.
JI - May 14, 2008
Change of scenery
challenge trade. In talks with LSB re: SaltyGoesYard
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
I think that's a huge coup for us.
Salty really brings a lot of sarcasm to the team. He’s a big bat. Bit inconsistent, but when he connects…
Matthew - May 14, 2008
Just don't get roped into giving up Liebkartoffel too
don’t give up anything more than a C prospect, like maybe F’nA’s
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
F'nA's is untouchable
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
That would be like trading the Mariner Moose.
JI - May 14, 2008
I think you're confusing valuable prospects with the physically unappealing again.
Matthew - May 14, 2008
F'nA's is a catalyst
real clubhouse guy.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
You need gritty guys like that.
You’re not going to win if you don’t have gamers on your team.
CapSea - May 14, 2008
Thanks, Matthew
Jeff’s a terrible GM, so all of us need to help with his personnel moves
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
Screw the future
Matthew and Graham might leave in free agency before Liebkartoffel is ready to contribute. Lets go for it this year.
Robert - May 14, 2008
LIEBKARTOFFEL CAN HELP IN THE PRESENT NOT THIS AGAIN
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008

Yeah, in his day

Just joking Graham!
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008

we should just call up Coach for that situation
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008

They're our AA minor league affiliate, right?

seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
Crap
Does that mean I have to head over to the PI blog?
Whatever you do don’t make me sign with Baker’s commentors
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
No don't worry, LL still owns your rights

seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
I don't think I can handle Baker land
It may make me give up the dream
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008

SBN is as good as it gets – would you rather flip burgers or comment on a blog?

CapSea - May 14, 2008
Agreed
Alex B - May 14, 2008
Only problem with this one is that it needs a few more frames at the end to capture the bounce

Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
Yeah
We need to get it in good shape for the 2008 highlight reel
Alex B - May 14, 2008
It seems like the only 1B options we have are WFB, Cairo, or Vidro
So should Vidro be playing first base? He’s not that great defensively and his bat stinks as well…Why all the complaining about Cairo if there is no clearly better alternative?
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
Cairo has never been able to hit
He’s a career backup MI who’s on the downside now.
Vidro at least hit well last year and for his career
LantermanC - May 14, 2008
How is his 1B defense?
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
Not as bad as Sexson's.
Similar range, and Sexson clearly has size advantage, but Vidro’s years as a MI actually help him play 1B somewhat acceptibly.
I’d rather have him there than Cairo.
PositivePaul - May 14, 2008
It's a problem of roster construction.
JI - May 14, 2008
Should have kept Norton
vkut79 - May 14, 2008

vkut79 - May 14, 2008
Cairo is not fast.
JI - May 14, 2008
Irrelevant when we don't get on base.
CapSea - May 14, 2008

Matthew - May 14, 2008
That's to be expected.
JI - May 14, 2008
I have developed a Gotterdammerung-style Mariners deathwish...
Now that it’s pretty much over for the season, I want to see us REALLY fail. Fail in all the worst ways possible. 30-3? I want to see us beaten 40-3. By the Pirates. Can you do that?
CapSea - May 14, 2008
Clement with a triple?
Awesome.. too bad I’m watching the game thread instead
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
it was a "defense-assisted" triple so you didn't miss much

NY: 19-21

Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
nope
getting beat by bad teams just reinforces the suck

eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
The field has nothing to do with this.
I’m not talking about his skill, only about his contribution.
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
I 100% agree with you
Matthew - May 14, 2008
Um
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
Right, and his skill is very good.
It just doesn’t look like it because Safeco kills .290/.340/.500 right handed hitters who play great defense at third.
eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
You have to take player-park factors into account
When you judge if a contract is worth it or not.
vkut79 - May 14, 2008

RAWR
Robert - May 14, 2008
It depends on how you look at money
For the Mariners maybe it’s not an issue, but for teams with less money, I don’t see how his contract is justified.
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
that's because you are worse at performance analysis than we are
Matthew - May 14, 2008
:) Yay
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
Ok, well let's flip this around.
Try to convince us specifically why Adrian Beltre is not worth 5/65. Convince us why he is worth less than that. I don’t think anyone can do it.
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
I think he is worth 11 million or so
I’m not saying it’s a horrible deal, just a bit too much.
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
So if Beltre's not worth that contract, tell me someone who you think is worth that contract.
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
A 3B or a position play in general?
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
If you can think of a 3B, great.
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
David Wright
LantermanC - May 14, 2008
Pretty sure he would be worth like 16 million
vkut79 - May 14, 2008

JI - May 14, 2008

MFAN - May 14, 2008

I bet he could get 10/200

LantermanC - May 14, 2008

CapSea - May 14, 2008

Matthew - May 14, 2008
He is too expensive for what he has contributed to this team
That’s what I meant
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
See but we're just arguing that he's been worth his contract except for maybe 2005
What makes you think he’s too expensive for his numbers?
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
I'm taking 2005 into account.
If he had a 2005 like he had 2007 then I would say the contract is fair.
vkut79 - May 14, 2008
And you're wrong.
eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
Then you're wrong.
CapSea - May 14, 2008

Was Tood Helton worth it?
JI - May 14, 2008
Depends
A lot of FA contracts start as bargains in their first couple years but eventually turn into overpays.
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
David Cone
JI - May 14, 2008
Ichiro 04-07

Randy Johnson
JI - May 14, 2008

I remember thinking at the time that the D-backs would regret it.
They didn’t.

Beltran, Beltre
MFAN - May 14, 2008
Also, the guy we signed to play RF in 2001 that was a FA from Japan was pretty good, too
eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
DOOD THAT WAS HIS ROOKIE YEAR HE WON THE AWARD!!
I love Ichiro, but that was easily the most undeserving ROY ever given out.
esoteric - May 14, 2008
For what reason?
Todd Hollandsworth says hello.
JI - May 14, 2008
I have no idea who that was.
Good thing we went with the guy we won the posting for from Japan to play RF instead.
Matthew - May 14, 2008
OK, right.
eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
Dustin Diamond in every Saved By the Bell spinoff
Lents Park Homer - May 14, 2008
glad we're getting owned by a guy with 1.0 career innings.
Matthew - May 14, 2008
experence matters not
JI - May 14, 2008
Gameday went straight from Cairo to Ibanez
Beltre so unlucky he doesn’t even get to bat
Lents Park Homer - May 14, 2008
Wow. When was the last time we had the lead? This feels kinda cool.
Alaska - May 14, 2008
Monday, 5-0...
Fuckin Bedard
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
Is ANYONE paying attention to the game?
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
huh?
CapSea - May 14, 2008
No, we're too busy pointing out Beltre doesn't suck at 5/65
eponymous_coward - May 14, 2008
It's on in the background
it’s game thread season.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
A little bit
We’ve got some old crafty veteran was in, and squinty did something, and the announcers were inane…. yeah, that’s about right
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
We're winning right?
JI - May 14, 2008
Something like that
you act like I’m paying attention either while trying to discuss your free commenting rights
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
All I know is the number next to "Mariners" is higher than the number next to "Rangers"
Not sure what that means.
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
Not for long.
We’ll be back in comfortable territory soon.
Faux - May 14, 2008
I'm busy redrafting 50 pages of biomechanical analysis of spinal disc herniations
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008
See?
That’s not steroids! You don’t know anything about it.

Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
It's much more fun than biochemistry
Graham MacAree - May 14, 2008

MFAN - May 14, 2008
Whatever, we knew it would come to this.
esoteric - May 14, 2008
Crap
I forgot to wake up today. looks like a missed a good game.
PhilKenSebben - May 14, 2008
What game
all I see is a game thread
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
lots of Gerald Laird and whatnot
PhilKenSebben - May 14, 2008
This is going well
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
I think so. We've named a ton of people who deserved their 3+ free agent contracts.
That is what you’re talking about right? That’s why we’re all here.
Matthew - May 14, 2008
We had to go through three other relievers until we got to our best one.
esoteric - May 14, 2008
We talked about LL personnel moves
seattlebruin - May 14, 2008
there goes the "doubles only" by M's pitching
Eyebrows - May 14, 2008
Remember the relentless flood of comments on Opening Day?
Yeah, so glad we’re past that.
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
So you're all grammar Nazis
Shouldn’t it be “Go-ahead run on with fewer than 2 outs” rather than “less than” two outs?
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
yes
Matthew - May 14, 2008
Thanks
These damn Rangers announcers are driving me nuts with that… I had a HS teacher who drove that into our heads…
Robert Lintott - May 14, 2008
Aw shit I guess this needs a new thread
Jeff Sullivan - May 14, 2008
But this is one of my favorite threads ever
Robert - May 14, 2008
Sorry if I missed someone else saying it but they're calling it "Mild Lower Back Tightness" for Silva.
BrettJMiller - May 14, 2008
RRS sighting!
JI - May 14, 2008
New thread up
