Why do people find the over/under so hard to understand?
“An over-under or over/under bet is a wager in which a sportsbook will predict a number for a statistic in a given game (usually the combined score of the two teams), and bettors wager that the actual number in the game will be either higher or lower than that number. For example, in Super Bowl XXXIX, most Las Vegas casinos set the over-under for the score of the game at 46.0. A bettor could wager that the combined score of the two teams would be either more than or less than that number (as it happened, the combined score was 45, so anyone who had bet the under won).”
And he’s already rich. If you were rich and assured to make a ton of money no matter where you went, would you take more money to play with a bunch of losers?
It may have. He was an injury risk, we had no right fielder, and no good set-up man for putz. There was the potential for it to make us better, and it didn’t.
that a given method of prediction can be described as more or less reliable based on its past success/failure in prediction. Predictions aren’t by definition unreliable.
Even if this team is a .500 team right now (they’re not), that does not mean they are going to win 81 games. Just because you flip a coin 5 times does not mean you will get 5 heads and 5 tails. There are variations, etc.
This is a really bad team. Their badness is close the realm that was believed possible before the season started, minus a few disappointments. Like a weighted coin we are more likely to get a loss. Say, 65%. But just because we are supposed to lose only 65% does not mean we can’t lose 70% or lose only 50%
Similarly, even if we are a .500 team, That does not mean we cannot still lose 100 games and just be really, really unlucky.
By their nature they are only someone best guess, not a record of the future.
There are good predictions and bad predictions, just because some people make lousy predictions, it does not mean that all predictions are faulty or even unlikely.
If I chop off your head you may die. But it is possible that the 100000000 other times in history that someone had their head chopped off happened to coincide EXACTLY with a person’s death, by sheer coincidence, though the two are unrelated.
I do it all time so I can dock the window on top of the browser
It doesn’t work if you have silverlight installed (or at least I don’t think it does). You open the game as usual, as soon as the game loads you right click--> properties and copy the address. you then past the address into WMP: File—-> open URL. You must do this quickly because the addresses change constantly. I think it works on archived games but I am not sure.
McALLEN, Texas (AP)—During three years in the low minors, John Odom never really made a name for himself.
That sure changed this week—he’s the guy who was traded for a bunch of bats.
“I don’t really care,” he said Friday. “It’ll make a better story if I make it to the big leagues.”
For now, Odom is headed to the Laredo Broncos of the United League. They got him Tuesday from the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League for a most unlikely price: 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style.
“They just wanted some bats, good bats—maple bats,” Broncos general manager Jose Melendez said.
The Sci-fi elements didn’t bother me one bit. Name one Indiana Jones movie that hasn’t involved paranormal artifacts, why does it bother people so much that aliens replaced religious mysticism? Same thing, different time period.
“Playing on this team and seeing what is happening around me, I feel that something is beginning to fall apart,’’ Ichiro said, through a translator. “But, if I was not in this situation, and I was objectively watching what just happened this week, I would probably be drinking a lot of beers and booing.’‘
I think he'll be gone by the end of this series

hence why they have O/Us on the boards before the season for MLB team wins, players home runs, etc.

CapSea - May 23, 2008
Lots of bad talent
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
wait was there talent in the first place?
Kind of hard to believe that, even with massive luck, that a non-talented team could win 88 games
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Do you remember 2004?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
yeah, we sucked and lost a lot
We are much better now, so should be winning much more
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
In what way?
JI - May 23, 2008
hmmm starting rotation and offense
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Offense was worse on paper
rotation was better, defense was worse
The faulty assumption is that the players talent level remain consistent from 2007 to 2008.
JI - May 23, 2008
I thought the defense was supposed to slightly better
Wilk > Guillen, bounce back from Yuni, etc.
It didn’t turn out that way, but still.
MFAN - May 23, 2008
Yes, we were wrong about that
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
The 2003 Mariners won 93 games
the 2004 Mariners had a very similar roster.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
So you can't predict reliably
“that’s why you play the games”?
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
That's why it's called a predicttion.
JI - May 23, 2008
predictions can be reliable

vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Show me where in the rule book it says the home team can't change the rules?
CapSea - May 23, 2008
if that is in the rule book, I can do that in theory
Showing that the sun will rise tomorrow cannot be shown because it hasn’t happened yet.
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Good call, you're right.
And so, your point would be that we made a prediction about this team, and it either happened or it didn’t.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
My point is more general
that a given method of prediction can be described as more or less reliable based on its past success/failure in prediction. Predictions aren’t by definition unreliable.
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
I forget
what are we talking about?
JI - May 23, 2008
that predictions aren't necessarily unreliable
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Duh?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I know, I'm not sure why people disagreed before
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Baseball team predictions, however, are unreliable
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
they shouldn't be :(
vkut79 - May 23, 2008

they aren't historically awful

vkut79 - May 23, 2008
This subthread just lapped itself.
JI - May 23, 2008
Here:
This is a good read when discussing how most of these stats are predicted.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
They could still be a .500 team.
Unlikely, but I don’t think anyone thinks this team will lose 100 games.
Teej - May 23, 2008
I think people are missing the coin flip analogy.

I didn't know the data was faulty
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
ok the data wasn't faulty
The numbers never lie, only our interpretations of them do.
Many people had faulty interpretations of the data.

Yep this sub-thread should probably end. We’re arguing about stuff we all agree on.
vkut79 - May 23, 2008

No?
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Then, I'm lost as well.
CapSea - May 23, 2008

CapSea - May 23, 2008
You can't photoshopp a bib, a plate with a rock on it, and fork and knife
on to a moon walk photo?
JI - May 23, 2008
It's Paint, not photoshop.
And I can, but not in a time frame that warrants using it.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
I think it has good potential for hilarity
but I think a hand drawn cartoon would be better.
JI - May 23, 2008
I draw well.
No scanner though :(.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
it's not a fact
it’s extremely likely, but there is a chance that earth or the sun could be wiped out
JI - May 23, 2008
that is why predictions can be more or less reliable
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
By their nature they are only someone best guess, not a record of the future.
There are good predictions and bad predictions, just because some people make lousy predictions, it does not mean that all predictions are faulty or even unlikely.
JI - May 23, 2008
there is no such thing as a record of the future anyway
Reliability can be assessed based on past trials
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
exactly
JI - May 23, 2008
With that logic, nothing is a fact.
If I chop off your head you may die. But it is possible that the 100000000 other times in history that someone had their head chopped off happened to coincide EXACTLY with a person’s death, by sheer coincidence, though the two are unrelated.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
2 + 2 = 4 is a fact.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
"The sun will rise tomorrow" is a prediction.
JI - May 23, 2008
Correct
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
not a very bold one
but yeah I was wrong, technically it is a prediction.
MFAN - May 23, 2008
It is also wrong. The sun does not rise.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
now you're arguing semantics
JI - May 23, 2008
I am, you are correct.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
Hooray for David Hume!
Philosopher that you can use to piss everyone off in some way.
joof - May 23, 2008
That's a fact that you're rewording.
And you are right. They can be. But the sun may not rise tomorrow. That would be pretty embarrassing for you, huh?
CapSea - May 23, 2008
You can't call something that hasn't happened a fact
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Right, it's not a fact
We cannot predict baseball with the same accuracy with which we predict sunrises. Is that your point?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
That wasn't my point
My point is that predictions can be more or less reliable, they are not always unreliable as someone pointed out, be definition
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Of course?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I know I'm arguing obvious things
People enjoy disagreeing though. Funny.
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
There are always going to be outliers
this is one of them. And if you don’t think people had these concerns before the season then you weren’t reading.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I didn't realize there could be that much variation
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
There were a lot of people who pegged this as a 70s-win ballclub
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Including most stat-based systems.
I know PECOTA thought we sucked.
Teej - May 23, 2008
You can predict reliably
Outliers like this one are not the norm. You won’t be right 100% of the time but you’ll be right most of the time.
OlSalty - May 23, 2008
We were better in 2003 than we were in 2004
OlSalty - May 23, 2008
Look at the 85 royals, 87 Twins, and the 06 Cardinals
report back once you find the common thread
JI - May 23, 2008
the common thread by the way
is that the Cardinals deserve to win one more World Series with a really shitty team
JI - May 23, 2008
lack of talent%
CapSea - May 23, 2008
lack of talons
Nick S - May 23, 2008
Lack of water (lack of water....)
Got to free yourself (lack of water….)
Gomez - May 23, 2008
Lack of 100% belief
Alex B - May 23, 2008
We're pretty bad.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
So we go from 88 wins to this after making improvements to the team?
That happens why?
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
karma.
Alaska - May 23, 2008
We lost luck to free agency
Alex B - May 23, 2008
We did not make improvements.
We made replacements, and then declined.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
How can a decline this huge happen without any clear reason?
If declines like this can happen without clear reason, how can anyone predict anything?
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
What do you mean "without any clear reason"?
Players got worse. That’s a pretty clear reason.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
well yeah but why did they get worse? age? okay
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Age, injuries, regression
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
And they were lucky.
Now they are less so. They got older and they’re not lucky = bad.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
Reason: They're all old.
Who could predict it? Me, I predicted it. As did the stats that said we were way the hell lucky last year.
Next question: This bad? No one predicted this bad a decline!
The answer: Untrue. We had a lot of question marks that had a wide range of outcomes. They all happened to fall into the bad range.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
Age collapse, for one
OlSalty - May 23, 2008
Wasn't a true 88 win team.
Defense got older/worse. Most of the offense got older/worse. Lost Sherrill.
Eyebrows - May 23, 2008
The team added two players (Bedard and Silva) who are technically an improvement.
The rest of the team got older, worse and way less lucky.
Teej - May 23, 2008
Because shit happens
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
God is punishing us for being sinful.
JI - May 23, 2008
"non-talent problem"
That’s your answer
Alex B - May 23, 2008
The talent plays the games
They’re the problem.
Gomez - May 23, 2008
Beltre, Ichiro and Geoff Baker are all going to skip the flight home, change their names and start new lives in New York.
Teej - May 23, 2008
I mean, they have to fire somebody after this ...
this is getting beyond embarrassing.
The Ghost of Spike Owen - May 23, 2008
I say we sell low on Bedard.
JI - May 23, 2008
I hope it is me.
I deserve unemployment for having to watch this shit.
CapSea - May 23, 2008
Don't know what firing anyone would accomplish
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
The Washington Capitals say high
Edanger6 - May 23, 2008
If baseball were like hockey I would've been way happier with that brawl
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Diickey is going to lead the team in inning depite starting zero games.
JI - May 23, 2008
I was going to wait to work on this until after the game but given the circumstances
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Rec'd.
Coach Owens - May 23, 2008
My images are cleaner than yours.
JI - May 23, 2008

Jeff posts dirty pics
Alex B - May 23, 2008
I'm going off the 400k feed
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
me too
the smaller the picture the smoother the video
JI - May 23, 2008
When I loaded the 400k for this 2007 game the picture was huge >:(
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Easy, big fella!
Coach Owens - May 23, 2008
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
It's probably just your recording tool.
If you have problems with the frame rate (which this one doesn’t) you can paste the game feed into WMP and shrink it down even further.
JI - May 23, 2008
Recording tool = CamStudio
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
LOL WINDOWS
PhilKenSebben - May 23, 2008
interesting
maybe it has something to do with the settings???
JI - May 23, 2008
I think it's the gif size
mine are smaller
JI - May 23, 2008
89 MPH!
seattlebruin - May 23, 2008
Beautiful
Alex B - May 23, 2008
I like the version that shows Felix rolling around on the ground laughing.
One of the many reasons Felix is my favorite Mariner.
Teej - May 23, 2008
Yeah I just didn't want the .gif to be too long
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
When did this happen?
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008
Last August 21st in Minnesota
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
It's glorious.
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008
I am utterly mesmerised by this picture
It just sums up our season perfectly
Alex B - May 23, 2008
Last season
:(
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Oops, I didn't notice the date
The Lawn Dart can be this season’s contribution to the time capsule
Alex B - May 23, 2008
oh man we suck
Nick S - May 23, 2008
Yea, that's good news.
They get to go right back out and do it again tomorrow…
ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
Also, I'm very very late to the topic
but I like the 75 word rule, Jeff. Be able to fill in the blanks, people.
Gomez - May 23, 2008
I hope you and others will help me berate future violators
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I'll give it my best shot
Gomez - May 23, 2008
Can we get BrianL to violate the violators?
Alex B - May 23, 2008
I am quite resiliant, do your worst.
JI - May 23, 2008
That goes for you too!
Coach Owens - May 23, 2008
Way to go Dickey!
A well pitched inning from the Dictator!
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008

DICKEY COCK PUNCH!
Alaska - May 23, 2008
hopefully dickey's era can go below 5 today! : )
Alaska - May 23, 2008
Hah, scoreless inning!
Take that, Yankees.
Alex B - May 23, 2008
Baker has an update
weee
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
cool, I didn't realize Jeter played the game the right way
MFAN - May 23, 2008
I should've read his update before posting this
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Don't you love Jeter?
What are you, a terrorist?
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008
Frosty Raptor - May 23, 2008
According to this ratio it should be 8-13
Mariners- 8 hits, 2 runs
Yankees- 13 hits, 13 runs
Seriously, WTF mariners?
Alaska - May 23, 2008
Sadly the Mariners' power output is down there with Chernobyl's
Alex B - May 23, 2008
No XBH.
Mariner offense is back to being 3-4 singles to score a run, just like the bad old days.
eponymous_coward - May 23, 2008
LaTroy Hawkins pitches, is named like a crazy person
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
GO TO COMMERCIAL PLEASE
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I would laugh if this was cut-off by the pepsi rappers
MFAN - May 23, 2008
GOOOOOOD BLEEEESS DEREK JEEEEEETER
Alex B - May 23, 2008
Wow. I'm in the Alaska Airlines lounge at SeaTac.
M’s game got turned off sometime around 9-2.
Good news: today’s soup is Cheddar broccoli with chicken and rice.
eponymous_coward - May 23, 2008
Also: guess who's not watching Mariner games in Vegas this weekend?
Somehow, I don’t think I’d take watching Washburn throwing the suck pitch over girlwatching at the Wet Republic pool.
eponymous_coward - May 23, 2008
We went from God Bless America to Snoop Dogg
America sucks.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
What a shit day, Rome was in the basement, then this.
I need to play some MVP ‘05
PhilKenSebben - May 23, 2008
Digital oracle of the baseball gods
I had Bedard on the mound the other day in MVP Baseball 2005 and he suffered a broken nose on a routine grounder to the shortstop.
Dudes at EA must be clairvoyant.
Frosty Raptor - May 23, 2008
Ben Broussard is the batting champion for me.
but i also have richie hitting .330
PhilKenSebben - May 23, 2008
Time to make another gif
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I don't think I'd be a fan without them.
JI - May 23, 2008
I need to get mlb.tv or start recording the games on my dvd-r
PhilKenSebben - May 23, 2008
They are considerably more entertaining than the games.
eponymous_coward - May 23, 2008
You could make a good version of the VIDRO SCORES gif
JI - May 23, 2008
Working on another one
How do you import into WMP?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I do it all time so I can dock the window on top of the browser
It doesn’t work if you have silverlight installed (or at least I don’t think it does). You open the game as usual, as soon as the game loads you right click--> properties and copy the address. you then past the address into WMP: File—-> open URL. You must do this quickly because the addresses change constantly. I think it works on archived games but I am not sure.
JI - May 23, 2008
I used to have a FF add on that did this automatically
but I can’t remember what it’s called
JI - May 23, 2008
Got it to work, thanks
new one coming up shortly.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I can't believe those instructions were coherent.
JI - May 23, 2008
Needs better fps (although this is deliberately slow-mo)
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Go
Options-—> Video Options
JI - May 23, 2008
WHY DIDN'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS SOONER
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Didn't bother to look?
JI - May 23, 2008
Nope, nevermind, 200 is the max
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
i don't have mine set to the max
but I think some adjustment is necessary
JI - May 23, 2008
It's not the capture that's the problem
it’s the AVI—> GIF conversion.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
The better the source the better the gif
if ithe video looks fine, the gif should look good to.
JI - May 23, 2008
*too
JI - May 23, 2008
You will have mail in 1 minute
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
ok I loled
JI - May 23, 2008
What the balls?
why is it slow?
JI - May 23, 2008
The video itself is from a slow-motion capture
but then when I convert it it gets even slower.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
yeah, exactly
wtf???
When I speed it up the picture gets all wonky.
JI - May 23, 2008
i don't know what's up?
Is there a good regular speed angle of this?
JI - May 23, 2008
Unfortunately no, it wasn't captured at regular speed
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
When I tinker with and get it up to a more correct speed
the image has black snow all over it.
I think you may want to find a better program.
JI - May 23, 2008
Than CS or APE?
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
APE
(I approve of this acronym)
JI - May 23, 2008
I'll poke around this weekend
Wonder if anyone’s torrented any of these programs…
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I disapprove of your morals.
JI - May 23, 2008
A few months ago I stole gum to see if I'd care
I didn’t
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
I bit torrented Cannibal!
I may watch it if this game doesn’t go on forever.
JI - May 23, 2008
I recommend this
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Being eaten alive is more fun than watching the Mariners.
Teej - May 23, 2008
Also I gave this movie to a coworker for the weekend
I look forward to chatting with her on Tuesday.
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
if only she were Japanese
Matthew - May 23, 2008
Yeah they have teepees
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
What, you don't believe me?
Matthew - May 23, 2008
...so this game is taking forever
and I never got around to it.

Nick S - May 23, 2008
Shit, is that actually out?
Might be time to go get a PS3.
Teej - May 23, 2008
Not yet
It comes out next week I think. I’ve got MGS3 – Subsistence going right now. Can’t afford a PS3 anyways. >:(
Nick S - May 23, 2008
Uhh
it doesn’t come out until next month.
bluemax - May 23, 2008

CapSea - May 23, 2008
Matsui is a circus out there!
Was he always that bad?
Also, get used to Vidro as our #3 hitter.
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008

Does anybody see a t-shirted Mac on the bench wearing a fake mustache?
Frosty Raptor - May 23, 2008
Frak it
That would be Mac wearing the ‘stache, not the bench.
Frosty Raptor - May 23, 2008
Is the score 2-13 or 3-13?
ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
@ to Q
JI - May 23, 2008
:O
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
2-13

ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
Yep Maclaren is gone very soon
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
There were some of those extra hitters our team has to face
Smegmalicious - May 23, 2008
Okay so we will be 10.5 games back soon
Yay double digits!
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Fucking cameraman!

vkut79 - May 23, 2008
This game just hurts
it is actually painful to watch
wadswerth - May 23, 2008
I'm pretty sure our pythag already says we're a (-12)-174 team
how much worse could it get?
joof - May 23, 2008
we had a lot of close losses earlier
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
Our pythag doesn't actually matter
Graham MacAree - May 24, 2008
aw shit Zito won
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
He's never gonna make it to 20.
JI - May 23, 2008

vkut79 - May 23, 2008
What hasn't gone wrong this season?
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
I'm going to search for a job bbl
Gomez - May 23, 2008
Ibanez actually has some solid offensive numbers
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
He's still a good hitter.

Teej - May 23, 2008
Over already?
JI - May 23, 2008
fitting ending
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
I feel sorry for the people still emotionally invested in this team.
ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
13 runs on 13 hits for the Yankees
10 of those hits were singles
Wow

All of those runs were earned also
Crazy luck
vkut79 - May 23, 2008

JI - May 23, 2008
I'm tempted to get it tonight
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
The first slice or so will be good until the crust cheese solidifies.
JI - May 23, 2008

vkut79 - May 23, 2008

Must not be aware that Detroit is currently losing 8-4…
ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
He knows that New York and Detroit are in last place right
Jeff Sullivan - May 23, 2008
Detroit is the team that is supposed to score 1,000 runs.
...or something.
ThundaPC - May 23, 2008
Still find it hard to believe that a team can underperform that much
vkut79 - May 23, 2008
stuidedst prediction ever

I took it from a Hero’s fan board.
Fin - May 23, 2008

JI - May 23, 2008
I think this is more fitting for when you win next...
“Hey, Mariners won a game!”
Sylar - May 23, 2008
We'll have to stow that away, I am not seeing any use for it in the near future.

Holy shit, Kevin Kennedy and Steve Lyons?

BrianL - May 23, 2008
Someone needs to go slap him in the cock
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - May 23, 2008
I hate to say I told you so, but man, I saw this one coming.
He’s death to everything he touches at this point. He’s single-handedly trying to ruin every good thing he’s ever done in his life.
Matthew - May 23, 2008
I'm really glad he put a bunch of shitty CGI into Star Wars
that doesn’t date it or anything
JI - May 23, 2008
I loved it, actually
The Sci-fi elements didn’t bother me one bit. Name one Indiana Jones movie that hasn’t involved paranormal artifacts, why does it bother people so much that aliens replaced religious mysticism? Same thing, different time period.
OlSalty - May 23, 2008
Ichiro: Still hilarious
BrianL - May 23, 2008
Ichiro deserves the Nobel Price for Awesome.
He seems like an awesome person to drink with.
Matthew - May 23, 2008
Agreed.
I wish I spoke Japanese better. I might find his interviews even more amusing/hilarious/awesome.
BrianL - May 23, 2008
Ichiro
great or greatest baseball player alive?
