The Mariner front office can't evaluate hitters. They love to stock up on aggressive, free-swinging types who put the ball in play and rarely walk, seemingly ignorant of the fact that the most important things a guy can do at the plate are get on base and hit for power.
The Mariner front office can't evaluate pitchers. They have zero understanding of replacement level, they put too much stock in ERA, and they buy into labels like "proven winner" and "innings eater" instead of trying to figure out what a guy can provide to the team with his actual performance.
The Mariner front office can't evaluate defense. Raul Ibanez is the everyday left fielder.
Our only source of happiness at the moment is the hope that sometime down the road there'll be people in the front office who are the complete and utter opposite of the people in there now.
Is that unhealthy? I think that's unhealthy.

Of course it's unhealthy
What kind of idiot roots for his team to lose? Me.
Although, I suppose it would be more unhealthy to delude myself into believing that this organization will ever accomplish anything the way it is currently constructed.

Someday?
Not until Lincoln/Armstrong leave. This problem stays so long as they do.
tait644 - May 24, 2008
Back before the start of the 05 season
We had Howard and Chuck speak at the the stadium employee orientation and they told all of us that :
“People dont go to games to watch their teams win, they go to have fun. People dont remember the final score of of their first ballgame but they remember how much fun it was to meet the moose and watch the hydros. And that’s the lasting memory that we want to give them”
I just about put a bullet in his ape head.
Robert - May 24, 2008
I hope you're not serious.
R.J. Anderson - May 24, 2008
:(
Robert - May 24, 2008
He told me the same story on the way to Canada this weekend :(
BrettJMiller - May 24, 2008
At the start of '05 they thought the losing of 2004 was a
thing of the past.
I’m hoping that after so many losing seasons since then, they’ve started to change their paradigm.
Katal LM - May 24, 2008
You have no idea how serious they take those ballpark surveys
Robert - May 24, 2008
Hear that, Corco?
Katal LM - May 24, 2008
What did you work as?
That’s the insider info we need to pretty much back the argument that they don’t give a shit about winning but just to make money.
Fin - May 24, 2008
The sad part is they aren't even doing that.
They’re spending $100+ Million on this team. If they only cared about money, there are much cheaper ways to fail.
Zu Long - May 24, 2008
Fielder
Basically doing teenage bitch jobs around the stadium but since I got some inside info every now and then I can confirm our worst fears are in fact true.

Basically doing teenage bitch jobs
If only Washburn jokes were still funny.

Willie hit on my girlfriend once
Robert - May 24, 2008
It's always the scrappy guys.
I know a guy who’s girlfriend banged Jorge Cantu while they were dating.
R.J. Anderson - May 24, 2008
Point taken from this
Don’t get close to any of the players. They will hit on your girlfriends. Isn’t Willie married too?
I knew a ballgirl who not only Yuni hit on (or should I say, asked out), but also some of the players spread rumors about having sex with her and that threatened her job security. I mean who are they going to believe, the FOF or a easily-replaceable ball girl? I think she said she never wanted to work there again after the experience.
Fin - May 24, 2008
I remember the score of my first baseball game
...well no I don’t but I remember that Erik Hanson threw a shutout and it was awesome, and Kreuger lost the next day and it blew.
JI - May 24, 2008
We lost to the Yankees 5-2
The team had traded Randy Johnson the night before and I missed A-Rod’s two run HR because of the idiot ticket taker couldn’t do his job. My second game, Clemens shut us out 12-0. I should have taken this as a warning.
Robert - May 24, 2008
I was at that game.
JI - May 24, 2008
A guy in RF hung a banner that said
HEY WOODY SUCK MY JOHNSON
it was awesome
JI - May 24, 2008
Maybe it wouldnt matter if we remembered the score if they were less stupid
Robert - May 24, 2008
That trade was awesome ever though we were all pissed.
..as awesome as it could be under the circumstances anyway
JI - May 24, 2008
Yes but not pissing Randy off would have been less stupid
Robert - May 24, 2008
I know.
8 years and I never got to see him pitch, if I had gotten into baseball a year sooner I would have gotten to see his no hitter. Fuck me for being six years old. >:(
JI - May 24, 2008
God bless you retrosheet
Hanson!
Kreuger >:(
JI - May 24, 2008
I remember Randy Johnson losing to the Orioles (and possibly getting lots of strikeouts?)
But at the time I really didn’t give a damn about baseball.

I just hope our new GM wears a Bill Bavasi mask so we can trick Fontaine into staying.
Teej - May 24, 2008
But where would Bavasi take him?
There aren’t a lot of teams looking for dumb GMs at the moment. I’d worry about Engle before Fontaine anyway.
discovolante - May 24, 2008
I don't worry that Bavasi would take him
as much as I worry that Bavasi’s firing might spur Fontaine to go work somewhere better. From what I understand, the two are very close.
Note: I know jack shit about this. I just like the idea of someone wearing a Bill Bavasi mask.
Teej - May 24, 2008
I don't think Fontaine is that big of a loss in the overall picture.
Matthew - May 24, 2008
I would be discouraged by the loss of his awesome mustache
Robert - May 24, 2008
Fontaine's a cool guy
but yeah, gameplanning an org’s scouting and player development isn’t a ninja-like science.
Gomez - May 24, 2008
Any chance that Engle goes when Bavasi does?
Katal LM - May 24, 2008
He was here before Bavasi
so I doubt there’s much connection.
Matthew - May 24, 2008
I don't think this team's baseball philosophy will change until Yamauchi/Nintendo of America surrender control
Frosty Raptor - May 24, 2008
No
Howie and Chuck just need to disappear and their replacement would need to be someone who is willing to let baseball people run the team and stick to the business end.
Yamauchi-san is not necessarily the problem. Of course he wants the damn team to maximize their profit margins. The problem is that Howie and Chuck think they know how to build a ballclub, and they don’t, but they have ownership of the ballclub and they get to meddle.
Gomez - May 24, 2008
Is Yamauchi even still around?
Regardless, I’ll give you three guesses as to who demanded the Johjima extension. Hint: it wasn’t Bavasi.
Jeff Sullivan - May 24, 2008

Fin - May 24, 2008
He didn't spell anything wrong. It was content,
And all he did was change the blame. He originally seemed to be saying Yamauichi was to be blamed for everything. Then he reworded it to ensure that Yamauchi was really only to be blamed for Kenji.
CapSea - May 25, 2008
At least Johjima is good
And at least [COATHANGER] is only demanding we offer such extensions to good players.
Gomez - May 24, 2008
Problem is
the from what I can tell Howie and Chuck are pretty good at making money. I also don’t really think Howie and Chuck care if they can build a “winning” ballclub because they are just trying to make money. Sure it’d be nice to win a lot of games but they don’t want to take the risk of losing a lot of games (although this has bit them in the ass a couple times). Mediocre teams can make a lot of money in baseball. They probably won’t get fired until they lose a lot of money and I doubt this is gonna happen unless we turn into the next KC Royals.

Alright, so I'm still a bit confused by this distinction
Is it:
A) The Mariners don’t understand that Ibanez is bad at defense
or
B) The Mariners acknowledge Ibanez is bad at defense, but don’t realize the consequence of having a truly awful defense
I’m guessing it might be a little from column A and a little from column B, but holy shit have they seen Ibanez play defense in Yankee Stadium recently?
JLC - May 24, 2008
I don't think they know
I think they see him as an adequate left fielder.
Fin - May 24, 2008
I think it's a little of both
Combined with a healthy dose of not giving a shit about the team winning, only getting kids and non fans into the ballpark.

Raul Ibanez is an example of the fact that they don't get how important defense is
