While that play just now is more symbolic of the way the season was just a complete collapse and even our best players can’t save us from embarrassment.
Let's be honest, folks: did anyone REALLY think we were going to actually win a game?
And man…if the clubhouse was rough to be in over the last few days…imagine what it’ll be like today. I predict many people throwing many other people under many buses.
One of the few constants the last few years has been Ichiro’s complete and total awesomeness. If he’s going to be dogging it like this, I’m not really sure why I’d want to watch anymore. I will, because I’m stupid, but I’ll enjoy it even less.
but you’d be hard pressed to have what happened to JJ happen to an opposing pitcher in Safeco, for him to be down in pain, and for the camera to show the crowd… and show half the people in the crowd laughing or smiling…
Are you just being argumentative because you're pissed (we all are) or are you really this dumb?
Not only did Mac make the right move, it was a non-obvious right move. If anything he should be saluted for breaking out of the stupid “CLOSER IN NINTH ONLY” box and bringing J.J. in to hold the lead. J.J.’s failure to perform can’t be placed on Mac – J.J. was rested and pitching in exactly the sort of situation he is theoretically supposed to excel in.
I didn't "know" or predict that JJ would fail in that situation...
I just thought it stank of desperation on McLaren’s part. If we’re talking about 2007 JJ, then sure, none out in the 8th on plenty of rest makes tons of sense. But this is the ‘08 Putz. Get through the 8th and let him slam the door in the 9th.
A dispiriting loss to say the least, but I’m surprised that I would be jumped on so much for expressing an opinion on the manager’s strategy.
Have fun with your little echo chamber the rest of the way.
I just watch baseball because it’s better than doing most other things. This team has become boring to me, so at least if they suck with different personnel I’ll see something new.
Maybe it's just me, but are we giving Ichiro a bit too much shit?
The way I saw the play (and I watched the replay), he fucked up the play, and he definitely looked frustrated, but he was running toward the fence and Wlad was right there to pick up the ball. It’s not like he could have slammed on the brakes and went back to the ball any quicker than Wlad got the ball in his hand.
The spiked throw and the ridiculous tumble are just….....you can’t get that from anyone else. Manny wouldn’t even pretend to try and make a play like that.
FSN shows Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers games but won’t show Seattle Sounders or Tacoma Rainiers games. Anybody have any idea why Puget Sound got the snub for Portland?
I looked into the requirements for becoming an umpire in the minor leagues. Apparently you pay $4000+ (which includes room and board) to go to an umpiring school in Florida for 5 weeks in January/February, and if you finish with high marks, you’ll get recommended for assignments in Rookie ball or short season A ball, and the work pays starting around $1800 a month, which ain’t much. From there, you work up the chain, trying to get promoted to full season A ball, then AA, AAA (which pays around $3800 a month)... then, if you put in about 8 good years, you might get promoted to the bigs, where umps make anywhere from $80K to $300K a year.
So: a) no wonder umps are so ignorant, because who would be willing to go through that just to call balls and strikes… and b) if all my other prospects in life ever somehow run out….
I didn’t see Ichiro unsure of whether Wlad was taking it or not. Ichiro doesn’t care. He’s established a clear pattern of taking anything he can get to. I saw Ichiro loafing it to the ball and then being burned when it carried further than he thought.

I dunno', I think lawn dart has already taken care of that.
Aaron Campeau - May 25, 2008
Yeah, the lawn dart sums up WHY we lose.
While that play just now is more symbolic of the way the season was just a complete collapse and even our best players can’t save us from embarrassment.

BrianL - May 25, 2008
I don't hate him
He just shouldn’t be managing a Major League baseball team.
lemonverbena - May 25, 2008
You're placing a lot more blame on McLaren than he deserves.
BrianL - May 25, 2008
No you can't. It was actually an uncharacteristically smart move on Mac's part.
Go with your supposedly best reliever in the highest-leverage situation, even if it’s not the 9th.
Ain’t Mac’s fault that J.J. shit the bed.
esoteric - May 25, 2008
Exactly.
It was surprisingly smart of McLaren. Putz hadn’t pitched in a while, and it was very high-leverage.
Teej - May 25, 2008
yeah, you're all the geniuses.
nice game.
lemonverbena - May 25, 2008

Graham MacAree - May 25, 2008
well next time maybe you can tell us what the future is
we’re obviously beneath your clairvoyance
JLC - May 25, 2008
Are you just being argumentative because you're pissed (we all are) or are you really this dumb?
Not only did Mac make the right move, it was a non-obvious right move. If anything he should be saluted for breaking out of the stupid “CLOSER IN NINTH ONLY” box and bringing J.J. in to hold the lead. J.J.’s failure to perform can’t be placed on Mac – J.J. was rested and pitching in exactly the sort of situation he is theoretically supposed to excel in.
esoteric - May 25, 2008
JJ was the one who blew it
It might’ve been a bad idea if JJ had to go two innings, but he couldn’t even hold the lead for one.
OlSalty - May 25, 2008
I didn't "know" or predict that JJ would fail in that situation...
Have fun with your little echo chamber the rest of the way.
lemonverbena - May 25, 2008
Of course it was desperation
McLaren is desperate to win.
Jeff Sullivan - May 25, 2008
Was Vidro really just trying to bunt?
joof - May 25, 2008

mont_mariner - May 25, 2008

But he’s looked really wild and Pujols hit an RBI double.
Graham MacAree - May 25, 2008
Maybe it's just me, but are we giving Ichiro a bit too much shit?
The way I saw the play (and I watched the replay), he fucked up the play, and he definitely looked frustrated, but he was running toward the fence and Wlad was right there to pick up the ball. It’s not like he could have slammed on the brakes and went back to the ball any quicker than Wlad got the ball in his hand.
I guess I don’t see it as really giving up.
Teej - May 25, 2008
I agree
Ichiro seemed genuinely surprised that ball carried so far
marinator - May 25, 2008
He was coasting to the ball is my beef.
If it was a one time thing, I’d shrug it off, but it hasn’t been.
Matthew - May 25, 2008
I hate to use the term "body language"
but Ichiro could’ve at least pretended to run for the ball even if he knew he had no chance.
JLC - May 25, 2008
He should at least have shown Raul how to tumble gracefully
Alex B - May 25, 2008
fuck that
the Raul Ibanez tumbling .gif had me in tears for several minutes. If we’re going to lose, I want more hilarity.
JLC - May 25, 2008
The one that makes me LOL every time
is the ball down the LF line that goes right by his stumbling ass.
Gomez - May 25, 2008
That one is decent, but it lacks absurdity
The spiked throw and the ridiculous tumble are just….....you can’t get that from anyone else. Manny wouldn’t even pretend to try and make a play like that.
JLC - May 25, 2008
He'd just point at it waiting for the Centerfielder to throw it in.
joof - May 25, 2008
That was by far the most satisfying HR I've ever seen Beltre hit
JLC - May 25, 2008
The tumble is both hilarious and deeply sad
Alex B - May 25, 2008
I really love the last .5 seconds of the .gif
The Tigers baserunner rounding first base is priceless.
JLC - May 25, 2008
I also love the way he never stops running on "Bad Angle"
He knows he’s fucked it up from the moment the ball leaves the bat
Alex B - May 25, 2008

Alex B - May 25, 2008
Here's to another falling off a cliff we-chart
mont_mariner - May 25, 2008
So out of curiosity last night

Aaron Campeau - May 25, 2008
Surprisingly, he went pretty easy on Ichiro.
Said he should have taken charge of that flyball, which is true.
BrianL - May 25, 2008
I don't think that's the case.
I didn’t see Ichiro unsure of whether Wlad was taking it or not. Ichiro doesn’t care. He’s established a clear pattern of taking anything he can get to. I saw Ichiro loafing it to the ball and then being burned when it carried further than he thought.
Matthew - May 25, 2008
On the plus side at least Washburn didn't get a win
