Carlos Silva has basically been the exact same pitcher in 2008 as he was in 2007, give or take a few minor little things. He's been throwing the same pitches, he's been throwing about the same speed, and he's been getting the same results. And while he definitely got a few bad breaks this afternoon, you'd be hard-pressed to find a luckier ERA than Silva's 2.79 through his first six starts. It was completely unwarranted, and while it fooled a few people into believing that he'd become a new pitcher, it was the same trick Washburn pulled a year ago, when his ERA stood at 2.64 on May 11th. And we know how that one turned out.
Carlos Silva isn't horrible. He could easily become horrible if he loses even a fraction of his command, but for now he's an innings-eater with ~average run prevention abilities, and despite what some people might've had you believe, he's not going to be anything more than that. Today was a pretty good reminder.The goods are all right, but the bads can be pretty damn ugly.

I thought that was the primary rule in fandom barring a valid exception. That’s why I’ve started to follow the Canucks! Who didn’t make the playoffs. And they’ve never won a Stanley Cup. Awesome.

Vancouver seems too far for me to consider that a home team.
I just never understood how NHL overlooked Seattle, especially when the Seattle Metropolitans won the Stanley Cup in 1919. So when your friends Seattle has only 1 championship, they actually have 2.

David Stern has decreed that Key Arena is a disreputable venue
So I guess it’ll be quite some time before the NHL comes to Seattle (or Portland). Which is something I don’t understand. How does Nashville freaking Tennessee have a hockey team and not Seattle?

When they renovated last time, part of the deal was to make hockey friendly. That didn’t happen for a number of reasons and without an arena there will be no hockey in Seattle. Except for the T-birds

They purposely made Key Arena unfreindly to hockey because the owner at the time (not schultz), didn’t want competition for winter sports in Seattle.

That's my recollection too.
But the stupidity goes deeper. The WHA wanted to place a franchise in Seattle, but Seattle, said noooo, we’re holding out for big, handsome NHL to take us to the dance.
When the WHA folded, the strong franchises jumped into bed with the NHL. Seattle almost certainly would have been one of the survivors, based on size and (then, anyway) a fairly robust hockey tradition.

problem with this theory
is the geographic rivalry issue. What if in 2011 Seattle does get a team? Vancouver is going to become it’s natural rival. So know you have to switch from rooting for the Canucks to passionately against them.
It’s why the idea of becoming a Portland fan after Seattle leaves the NBA is ludicrous to any actual Seattle basketball fan.

I live in Oregon (no sales tax suckers) and I won’t start rooting for a MLB team when the Rose City finally gets one. I suppose I’d have to treat the Canucks the same way. All the more reason to move to Canada, I suppose.

I couldn't name more than a couple teams.
HD/widescreen does more for hockey than it does for anything else on television. I can follow action nearly as well as I can follow it at the game. I still don’t the rules, players, or the teams, but I enjoyed what I saw of the Pitt and the Dallas game today.

I recently reread Dave's post on how Silva is a landmine.
And a bunch of people calling him crazy for thinking Silva would get anywhere near even 8 million, let alone 10. Then Matthew called them all idiots. That was an entertaining thread.
A few more games like this and I’ll win 1.50 from like 7 people. I was worried for a minute.
