I was out last night but saw enough of last night's [COATHANGER] to know what happened. Nice work, Mariners. Nice work.
Well, Jeremy Reed is still in Tacoma, but somebody in the org got promoted. It's probably not who you think, though. Whoever it was did figure prominently in a win.
It wasn't Michael Saunders, though he and Mike Wilson are starting to heat up in West Tenn. Mike Wilson also did something rather weird for him at the plate... he apparently drew a 4th ball before drawing a 3rd strike. I'm baffled myself.
It wasn't Triunfel, though he's also starting to heat up... not that it's hard to heat up in the middle of the High Desert. Ricky Orta heated up in the wrong way, more like a car with a busted radiator, and he needed help.
It wasn't Joe Dunigan or Gavin Dickey, though both are starting to thunder at the plate.
Find out who. On to the wrap-up!

A: Wisconsin 6, Great Lakes 0
WIS: 11-17... GLK: 14-17
Nathan Adcock: 7 IP, 5 H, walk, 9 K
Travis Mortimore: 1 IP, walk, K
Ryan Moorer: 1 IP
Juan Diaz: 2-4, R (272/337/321)
Gavin Dickey: 4-4, triple, 3 R (457/500/629 in 35 AB)
Joe Dunigan: 2-3, 3 run HR, 4 RBI, K, SB (235/333/457)
Alex Liddi: 1-4, solo HR, K (227/299/340)
Scott Robinson: 3-4, double
Now THAT is how to respond to getting your butt kicked. Nathan Adcock pitched easily his best game of the season, Joe Dunigan continued his nuclear May and Gavin Dickey vies for more playing time resumes his comeback from injury with an impressive 4 hit game.
Groundballs: 11
Flyballs: 3
Line Drives: 2
Pop Ups: 1
Walks: 1
Strikeouts: 9
A+: Lancaster 6, High Desert 4
Mavs: 15-17... Jethawks: 14-18
Ricky Orta: 3 IP, 6 H, (5 R) 4 ER (2 HR), 2 walks, 2 K, hit batter
Harold Williams: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER (HR), 2 walks, K
Julio Santiago: 2 IP, walk, 4 K
Aaron Cotter: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K
Jamie McOwen: 2-5, solo HR, 2 R, 2 K (275/342/358)
Carlos Triunfel: 3-5, R (253/295/343)
Travis Scott: 0-4, sac fly RBI, 3 K (325/385/523)
Carlos Peguero: 1-4, RBI, 2 K (280/302/464)
Greg Halman: 1-4, triple, RBI, K (264/314/456)
The Mavs did get 3 runs out of the gate, but the Jethawks jumped all over Ricky Orta, taking him deep twice and chasing him after the 3rd inning. Orta was looking to stretch out a bit, but this was not what he had in mind.
Groundballs: 1 (plus 1 bunt)
Flyballs: 7 (2 HR)
Line Drives: 3
Walks: 2 (plus 1 hit batter)
Strikeouts: 2
Lancaster would not surrender the lead. I will not elaborate.
AA: West Tenn 5, Mississippi 2
WTN: 22-10... MIS: 9-23
Rich Dorman: 7.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER (2 HR), 5 K
Jason Mackintosh: one out
Mumba Rivera: 1 IP, 2 K
Prentice Redman: 1-4, double, R, K (222/372/400)
Michael Saunders: 3-4, solo HR, 2 R, 2 RBI (324/402/541)
Mike Wilson: 1-3, RBI, walk, K (257/358/514)
Jon Nelson: 1-4, double, RBI, K (273/356/377)
Jeff Dominguez: 1-3, solo HR, K (196/274/286)
Rich Dorman gave up two line drive home runs, but had yet another fine outing. Granted, a lot of flyballs found gloves and he got squared up a lot, but AA is Rich Dorman's bitch, which is great except it's two levels too low.
Groundballs: 8
Flyballs: 10
Line Drives: 6 (2 HR)
Pop Ups: 1
Walks: 0
Strikeouts: 5
Mike Wilson singled home a run in the 4th, and Jeff Dominguez kicked off a 3 run 5th by leading off with his 1st HR of the season. Prentice Redman's one out double set up a Michael Saunders RBI single. Saunders got picked off, but Marshall Hubbard sungled, Mike Wilson... WALKED?!... and Jon Nelson doubled in Hubbard to make it 4-1.
Saunders also homered to lead off the bottom 7th, giving West Tenn a 5-2 lead that Dorman and the bullpen held up.
AAA: Tacoma 5, Iowa 2
TAC: 17-14... IOWA: 13-18
Chris Jakubauskas!!: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 walks, 3 K
Cesar Jimenez: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, walk, 2 K
Roy Corcoran: 1.1 IP, 1 H, K
Yung Chi Chen: 2-5, R, K
Matt Tuiasosopo: 1-4, double, walk, K (255/331/373)
Jeremy Reed: 3-5, double, solo HR, 2 RBI, K, SB (375/432/598)
Mike Kinkaide: 1-2, solo HR, walk, K (214/323/357)
Shawn Garrett: 2-5, 2 doubles, R, K, SB
Rob Johnson: 3-4, double, R, RBI, SB (258/318/289)
Oswaldo Navarro: 2-4, RBI (296/407/366)
Welcome to AAA, Chris Jakubauskas! Owning AA for a month finally paid off in a promotion, and he gave the Rainiers a solid performance, pitching into the 6th and not allowing a run, despite several line drives. Still, his performance is encouraging enough to look like he can hold up the back end of that Rainiers rotation.
Groundballs: 9
Flyballs: 2
Line Drives: 6
Pop Ups: 1
Walks: 3
Strikeouts: 3
Jakubauskas had help. Jeremy Reed, curiously starting in RF today (/fanning rumor flames), homered in the 1st to make it 1-0 Rainiers. Rob Johnson's one out ground rule double in the 5th set up Oswaldo Navarro... well, so did SS Andres Blanco, who watched a pop up drop to allow Johnson to score and make it 2-0. Mike Kinkaide homered with one out in the 6th to make it 3-0. Shawn Garrett reached in the 8th, stole his 1st base of the season and later scored after Rob Johnson stymied Blanco with a hot grounder to make it 4-0.
Cesar Jimenez got hammered in the 8th for 2 runs and Roy Corco had to bail him and the Rainiers out, escaping with a 4-2 lead. But Jeremy Reed's one out double in the 9th scored Yung Chi Chen to make it 5-2, and Roy Corco had it in the bag in the bottom 9th.

I don't want to start being "that guy"
but can we please stop referring to games as abortions? I don’t really care about anybody’s stance on the issue (and this is NOT an invitation to start discussing it, as that topic doesn’t belong here), and I don’t say it from a political standpoint of my own – I just think there’s better ways to refer to baseball games…

Kinkade apparently injured himself
on his HR trot, and he was replaced by Brent Johnson in the next half inning.
Mike Wilson’s 11% BB rate places him ahead of Mike Saunders and even Jeremy Reed (better than any rate Reed’s had since 2004).
Reed started in right because the Rainiers seem committed to giving Bryan LaHair games in LF. I still don’t really understand why; I can’t imagine he’d be good out there, and it’s not like moving him to a corner OF spot from a corner IF spot greatly changes his value. It’s not like it gives him a better path the majors, either – he’s a penniless man’s Raul Ibanez.
I’m happy for Jakubauskas – it wasn’t a great game by any stretch, but hey – no runs. He left runners on left and right, but that’s obviously preferable to the alternative. I can’t tell who the R’s dropped. The Rainiers roster is singularly unhelpful, as they show the same roster they’ve always shows, albeit with Jakubauskas moved up… as a coach.
marc w - May 7, 2008
RE: LaHair
That does seem odd, especially considering that LF Mike Saunders seems to be knocking on the AAA door. The only possible reasons I can think of are (1) to increase BL’s trade value and (2) to make a Ibanez-to-1B or DH move (which we all know is ridiculously unlikely).
Anyway, it’s nice to see we have some talent in AA that may only be 2 or 3 years away.
So, when do we give Reed another chance? I can’t quite wrap my head around Cairo still being on the roster when there’s someone doing this well in AAA, who can also do pinch-running duties.
The Alaskan - May 7, 2008
Yeah, Reed looks transformed
I’d really like to talk to a scout about this, but I am not the person who commonly chats with scouts.
On LaHair, yeah, it may marginally increase his trade value, but we’re talking about moving from ‘box of baseballs’ to ‘cash considerations.’ I mean, even if Ibanez moves to 1B, you’d probably put Reed in LF before LaHair. Flexibility is a good thing, and it’d be nice to have another OF option, but I keep thinking he’ll be a 1B/OF in the way that Ben Broussard was…. that’s not all that helpful.
marc w - May 7, 2008
One idea...
I know, I know… Still - Churchill would be a good person to ask. Even better - bug him about it in a scouting report request.
PositivePaul - May 7, 2008
Dickey playing time
He isn’t vying for more time. After missing two weeks on the DL, he is being eased back into the lineup by playing every other day…For now.
Note on Dickey: He has at least one hit in all eleven games he has played this season.
RattlerRadio - May 7, 2008
Hey Chris
what can you tell us about Scott Robinson? Another guy coming off the DL, rehab or something? Or is it just that he signed late from the indy league?
marc w - May 7, 2008
Robinson
was a 2002 draft and follow by the Astros. Last season he played with the Macon Music and won the MVP of the Independent South Coast League. Seattle signed him in December of ‘07.
Robinson is an bit older than normal for a player in this league. He joined the Rattlers from extended spring training at the start of the last road trip. The Rattlers needed a first baseman after Avila was back to the desert.
Robinson down in Arizona waiting for an opening and he was happy to get a chance to play some baseball.
Interesting note about him. He plays the field as a lefty, but is a righty when he has been called on to catch in the past.

Can Michael Saunders play CF?
redwolf75 - May 7, 2008
Yes
that’s his normal position, though he’s yielded to Prentice Redman and the like at times. Seems like he still plays there about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time.
marc w - May 7, 2008
Does he project to be a decent major league CF,
or will he most likely have to move into a corner as he fills out and matures?

Hahaha.

BrianL - May 7, 2008
Rumors?
Is Reed getting called up or traded? I’d heard he might get traded. If we’re calling him up, what’s our lineup?
DAMellen - May 7, 2008
Oh no, nothing yet
I was joking about how people will see a change in how a player is deployed and immediately get suspicious.
Given WLAD’s green in RF, people are thinking that if he flatlines at any point that the M’s will bring up Reed to play RF with him, though that belies the point that Reed almost always plays LF/CF.
Gomez - May 7, 2008
That makes sense
But espn actually says on their rumors page that San Diego isn’t happy with Edmonds and is interested in Reed. Wonder what we could get for him… Any thoughts? Do they have anybody we’d want?
DAMellen - May 7, 2008
Jake Peavy
seattlebruin - May 7, 2008
We'd inevitably get lumped with Tony Clark
He’s a veteran left-handed bat, see?
Alex B - May 7, 2008
Why must you make me sad?
You’re not very nice.
BrianL - May 7, 2008
Sure
but I’m not sure that the M’s have much leverage here. No one’s gonna offer much for Reed knowing that he’ll be free at the end of the year. Some teams may want him now, but there are always options – and they can point out that he’s blocked in Seattle by the likes of Wlad or Raul.
The M’s could possibly get someone well down the Padres ‘spect list, and while there may be bargains there, it’s not likely to be anyone all that special.
Best case scenario: we get, oh, Mitch Canham, the catcher from Oregon State’s nat’l championship team(s).
Worst case scenario: we get the single A equivalent of Tug Hulett
Mid point scenario: a semi-intriguing arm from their DSL/VSL list.

that has almost Tri’s potential, right?
Coach Owens - May 7, 2008
Italian
We have separate countries and everything over here in Europe. It’s great.
Alex B - May 7, 2008
Wait, did you get permission to have countries again?
when did this happen?
Uh, Liddi is an Italian 3B, but I don’t think any scout would say he had Triunfel’s potential. He has great power potential, but for now, that’s got him in the same boat with a number of players: Greg Halman, Kuo Hui Lo, Carlos Peguero, etc.
Liddi’s the youngest of these, but he’s also not quite produced at the same clip (esp. this year). Lots and lots of strike-outs.
marc w - May 7, 2008
I didn't know he was Italian. So you can shut up.
Coach Owens - May 7, 2008
You get cranky when you haven't had your nap, don't you?
Graham MacAree - May 7, 2008
Also, searching 'Alex Liddi'
Gives you the following at #1: “Mariners | M’s Farm Report | From Italy to Wisconsin, for love of …”
Graham MacAree - May 7, 2008
Why search when you can ask Graham?
seattlebruin - May 7, 2008
Breaking News: Google's attempt at world domination scuppered by Graham
Alex B - May 7, 2008
Where searching for Graham yields at #1:
“Graham Corporation designs and builds vacuum and heat transfer …”
Sec 108 - May 7, 2008
Uh no. But making me sound stupid just because I didn't
know Liddi was Italian does.
Coach Owens - May 7, 2008
Go and take a nap then
Alex B - May 7, 2008
You know what? I'm not having this discussion.
Coach Owens - May 7, 2008
That's okay.
You can continue the discussion after you get your juicebox.
BrianL - May 7, 2008
You're going to have to do better than that
my friend.
Coach Owens - May 7, 2008
Have you had your juicebox yet?
I really don’t want to pester you until you’ve gotten it.
BrianL - May 7, 2008
You kinda are stupid though
Graham MacAree - May 8, 2008
Zito's ERA dips back under 7.00
Alex B - May 7, 2008

JI - May 7, 2008
Indeed
I hope that’s allowed under the TOS.
Alex B - May 7, 2008
Back to 7.31
Normality restored, all is calm.
Alex B - May 7, 2008
