that Griffey (in the inevitable scenario in which he becomes a Mariner again) should have a contract stipulation that only allows him to serve as a DH.
Ritchie looked like the oversized and undercoordinated kid who gets recruited for freshman football and doesn’t know what position to play so they just throw him out there and say ‘hit someone’.
Not only that, the call of the fight by Dave Sims was positively sucktastic and pitiful.
Absolutely friggin EPIC. I was lucky enough to be at the game, in a luxury suite and we had the unfiltered direct feed from the Safeco Field closed circuit TV system in there – camera angles Fox wasn’t always using. From the replays I saw, I’m about 90% sure Felix clocked one of the Rangers – couldn’t see who – in the head, which is why Joh pulled him away on the 2nd base line. When he went into the dugout with his jacket on he looked like he definitely thought he was going to have to hit the shower. About an inning later (right after they pulled Gabbard), they showed the same Ranger (again, couldn’t tell who) bleeding from the mouth in the dugout and holding an ice pack to his face. We don’t need to stinkin Jose Guillen… Felix will shank you good and not get caught!
Richie charging the mound was aweosme in its own right. Laird set up something low – looked inside, around knee level – and the pitch missed by a good 4+ feet. It wasn’t as close to Richie as he made it out to be… From the replay all I could sense is that one got away from Gabbard. Richie just really seemed to be looking for a fight – something to vent his frustration and maybe light a fire. It made an otherwise awful game fun to watch, but the spark never caught anything.
Piazza only shifted to first when he was old and completely broken. Clement’s still young enough that he won’t be terrible. I’d rather see him behind the plate, but he’s not going to be a Piazza-level disaster at first.
Sexson will no be re-signed by the Mariners this offseason. Every player who has put up any sort of fight after Lou was traded hasn’t lasted on this team beyond the current season. Recent examples are Guillen and Ellison. Fighting doesn’t promote a “fan-friendly” environment. Sexson’s fate has been sealed, but at least he will leave us with a better feeling about him.
And whoever is the marketing director of the Mariners needs to be fired. Armstrong, from a quote in another thread, said earlier to day that they were trying to cater to women and children more. Who the fuck came up with this idea?! Women want to leave before the 5th inning and children have no money! We need to turn this shit around and signing Bonds, Canseco, Paul O’Neill, and Nolan Ryan, will light a fire under this franchise’s ass.
Is it possible
for us to be 5 games out already for 2009?
eponymous_coward - May 8, 2008
Excellent recap.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
I just got home. Was not able to watch the game.
Now that I’ve seen the score…. I think this probably would have been the most hilarious game to watch of all time. Sorry I missed it.
CapSea - May 8, 2008
I missed it too
Must’ve been an incredible game thread too.
Fin - May 8, 2008
When do pitchers and catchers report?
Fin - May 8, 2008
SPRING TRAINING STATS DON'T MATTER!!!!!!1
Matthew - May 8, 2008
I was simply asking when will the 2009 season start?
Fin - May 8, 2008
Wonder what our lineup will look like?
ThundaPC - May 8, 2008
With Luck
CF Ichiro
2B Lopez
1B Tex
DH Ibanez
3B Beltre
LF Griffy, Jr
RF Wlad
C Clement
SS Bentacourt
.... one can dream
IceStormV1 - May 8, 2008
No Griffey in left
Bad bad bad bad bad bad BAD
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Jr > Ibanez in left
and realistically, who else could we get?
IceStormV1 - May 8, 2008
Wlad is a better option in left than Griffey.
Far superior.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
a competent outfielder?
Matthew - May 8, 2008
Remember, This is under the impession that Bavasi will keep his job
IceStormV1 - May 8, 2008
This is a foreign concept to me.
Could you elaborate, Matthew?
BrianL - May 8, 2008
As an outfielder, Griffey is arguably the worst player in baseball
Jeff Sullivan - May 8, 2008
I get that he's bad
but what elevates him to the special status of “worst player”?
BrianL - May 8, 2008
I'm glad you asked
here’s the argument as presented by somebody much smarter than I.
Jeff Sullivan - May 8, 2008
Jesus H. Christ
That’s…That’s pathetic.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
I read things like "worst player in baseball" all the time about different guys
but when it’s MGL doing the typing, that’s when I start paying attention.
Jeff Sullivan - May 8, 2008
This cements my belief
that Griffey (in the inevitable scenario in which he becomes a Mariner again) should have a contract stipulation that only allows him to serve as a DH.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
I'm not convinced that his defense can be that horrible.
Not good? Yes.
I’m fully willing to concede that a /- 100 OPS corner outfielder with shit defense isn’t helping anything, but worst player? I very much doubt it.
I still think it would be fun to quantify just how terrible David Eckstein is.

Also, someone describe the awesomeness of the fight now.
I just saw it, but it’s not the same when it is not live.
CapSea - May 8, 2008
It was more surreal shock than anything.
ThundaPC - May 8, 2008
Seeing Bradley chew out Laird was awesome.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
I wasn't that impressed.
Ritchie looked like the oversized and undercoordinated
kid who gets recruited for freshman football and
doesn’t know what position to play so they just throw
him out there and say ‘hit someone’.
Not only that, the call of the fight by Dave Sims was positively
sucktastic and pitiful.
Thumbs down.
lyleleander - May 8, 2008
It was at least interesting.
I’m not sure if it was worth the unpleasantness that followed it, though.
Aaron Campeau - May 8, 2008
It was great.

Boring
This just in. M’s STILL BORING and will be even if they bring Griffey back. Those in the front office, time to fall on your tridents. Save face.
LA Mariner - May 8, 2008
How can you argue they're boring after what just happened?
They suck, but that certainly wasn’t boring
seattlebruin - May 9, 2008
The most hilarious part is that it's tagged "upcoming events"
JI - May 8, 2008
We're still in third :(
JLC - May 8, 2008
Dude that's better than now
BrettJMiller - May 8, 2008
Rather optimistic, don't you think?
SkipT - May 8, 2008
Richie for MVP
He has provided the only excitement since Tuesday..
angrybeltre - May 8, 2008
How long will Sexson's suspension be?
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Hopefully really long.
He can’t get back on my shitlist until it’s over.
Aaron Campeau - May 8, 2008
i'm not sure i can handle any more cairo
angrybeltre - May 8, 2008
I have a horrible feeling
we’re about to see the debut of Jeff Clement as a 1B.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
is that really so bad?
vkut79 - May 8, 2008
cuz we know the org doesn't have faith in him as a catcher pretty much
vkut79 - May 8, 2008
First time ever playing 1B
and it’s at the ML level. I’d say that’s pretty damn bad.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Can it be as bad defensively as Richie?
thejew4u - May 8, 2008
Worse.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
See: Piazza, Mike
JI - May 8, 2008
Stop with this comparison
Piazza only shifted to first when he was old and completely broken. Clement’s still young enough that he won’t be terrible. I’d rather see him behind the plate, but he’s not going to be a Piazza-level disaster at first.
pdb - May 9, 2008
My point is, that unless the guy is an infielder to begin with
you can’t just throw him out there in major league game and expect him not to embarrass himself. It’s a bad idea.
JI - May 9, 2008
I'd love to see a YouTube video of you
doing one of the Mavis Learn to Type things. It would be hilarious
seattlebruin - May 9, 2008
Aren't catchers considered part of the infield?
I’m just saying…
Wilder. - May 9, 2008
different skills
when was the last time you saw a catcher lay out on a dive to stop a ground ball?
johnbai - May 9, 2008
We should just call up the West Tennessee DIAMOND JAXX
let them play, and see if anyone notices.
Gomez - May 8, 2008
fuck it
call up wisconsin. see if anybody notices that.
angrybeltre - May 8, 2008
Put the Mariners in first!
I mean if we’re gonna day dream aboutu the future, let’s at least do it right.
DAMellen - May 8, 2008
He did
Jeff Sullivan - May 8, 2008
You know what's terrible about this season?
With Clement and Wlad already on the club, there’s no one else we can look forward to getting callups once the wheels finally fall off.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Reed!
Matthew - May 8, 2008
Woooo lefthanded Corey Patterson!
It’s terrible that Reed on the roster represents a rather marked improvement.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Corey Patterson bats lefty
BrettJMiller - May 8, 2008
Uhh..he sure does.
Woooo white Corey Patterson!
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Corey Patterson is probably a really white cultured black guy.
BrettJMiller - May 8, 2008
Why must you do this to me?
:(
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Because I hate everything and want other people to feel depressed too >:(
BrettJMiller - May 9, 2008
I think you just need a hug and a happy song.
Would you like a hug and a happy song? ::grabs guitar::
BrianL - May 9, 2008
Graham MacAree - May 9, 2008
awww
BrianL - May 9, 2008
After I hug it I kind of want to kill it.
BrettJMiller - May 9, 2008
Well I suppose we can call that progress.
BrianL - May 9, 2008

Hey, it's not that it's not cute.
But that famous hugging Lion is the only awesome hug right now where I would consider not killing the thing I’m hugging after said hug.
BrettJMiller - May 9, 2008
he's not hugging it, he's smothering it to death
pdb - May 9, 2008
free jeremy reed!
angrybeltre - May 8, 2008
Seriously, though
what does Reed have to do to get called up?
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Be more of a shitty veteran?
The Beer Baron - May 8, 2008
+2 days of facial hair
That should add the necessary “grizzled” adjective as well.
thejew4u - May 8, 2008
fuck the mariners
Corco - May 8, 2008
No no no
Fuck Everything.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
You're gonna do it again?
I figured you would need at least SOME recovery time from last night
seattlebruin - May 9, 2008
The L stands for Stamina
Jeff Sullivan - May 9, 2008
2009?
No way we’ll be competitive next year.
The Beer Baron - May 8, 2008
is there a scenario with this org that makes us competitive any year?
vkut79 - May 8, 2008
Yeah
I feel like we’re in a black hole
We need to just nuke this team and start over. Everybody goes except Felix
Corco - May 8, 2008
This team has the payroll to be successful very soon
if the right people are hired. We’re not to the nuking point yet.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
Howard Lincoln...
...Chuck Armstrong…
Omerta - May 8, 2008
And therin lies the problem, eh?
BrianL - May 8, 2008
With them here, I hold no hope for the immediate future.
Omerta - May 9, 2008
Perhaps Chris Antonetti cons his way into a GM position?
A meteor crushes both Howie and Chuck?
BrianL - May 9, 2008
And Lopez.
Slica - May 8, 2008
Felix, Bedard, Beltre, Clement, Wlad, Ichiro, Putz, and maybe Loafie can stay.
I guess there’s no reason to disassemble the bullpen either. But after that pretty much nuke everyone.
BrettJMiller - May 8, 2008
yuni and lopez can field. they're at least worth a thought about keeping
angrybeltre - May 8, 2008
You might want to read over the Yuni post
that appeared earlier today.
BrianL - May 8, 2008
nuke the bullpen and Lopez, Putz inclusive
we can trade them all for decent prospects
Corco - May 9, 2008
I vote for keep Loafie
if we lose him, we’ll lose LFoJL tag and lots of amusing bloop singles to right field as well as the Will Jose Lopez Swing at the First Pitch Watch
seattlebruin - May 9, 2008

Sexson will not be re-signed by the Mariners this offseason.

How about they sign David Beckham and the Jonas Brothers? Problem solved.
