Brad Penny's Shoulder

It's no secret that Penny's shoulder has been a problem off and on all year. Apparently, it was worse than ever today. "In the bullpen today, I knew I probably shouldn't have went out there," Penny said. "But that would have put the team in a horrible position."

Penny got shelled and is now undergoing an MRI on his shoulder. When will athletes learn that, in a majority of cases, playing through pain is stupid? I know it must be incredibly hard for them to sit games out, but come on guys, eventually you have to see the pattern here right? Missing 30 games now is always better than missing 100 games later.

When a player actually does the sensible thing he gets called a pussy
Hopefully if he's hurt they'll bring Kuo into the rotation.

That would really help my [ABORTION]

I doubt this happens.

Torre thinks Kuo is too fragile to be used more than once a month. Expect Park Chan Ho to the rotation.

With pitchers, I think a lot of it has to do with ego.

If they go out playing injured, and have a good start or close, they are even more of a hero.
Frankie Rodriquez was trying to close a tight game earlier in the year playing on two badly injured ankles, which are vital in his style of delivery. He blew the save that night. I think this is unfair to the team and the fans to play knowing you are not able to perform adequately. These failures are remembered long after any string of successes a pitcher has.

Missing 100 games later AND

getting shelled now. This isn’t like my senior year of high school when I played through an injury and made myself worse. If I didn’t play then, I didn’t play ever again. These guys have a few more years. There’s no ticking clock. Relax.

Ok I'll argue the other side

I’m pretty sure all pro atheltes today are in some pain. You accumulate bumps and bruises from playing sports and for the most part it is perfectly fine to push through the pain. Sometimes soreness is normal and sometimes soreness is a sign of an injury. The difference sometimes is difficult to tell.

Well

at least now there is an explanation for why he was striking out so few guys and giving up so many homers. The team is better off without him right now.
