Series Preview: Seattle Mariners @ Atlanta Braves

Seattle: 25-47
Braves: 36-38

GAMES

Game 1: Erik Bedard* vs Jorge Campillo
Game 2: Jarrod Washburn* vs Jair Jurrjens
Game 3: Carlos Silva vs Tim Hudson

Through nearly 500 pitches as a starter Jorge Campillo has managed 60 swings and misses for a 12.1% rate. That's higher than Erik Bedard last year or Felix ever. He also has an incredibly low line drive rate all resulting in a 2.48 tRA. We'll get an upfront seat to witness it tonight, but Jorge Campillo has pitched as one of the best pitchers in the majors leagues so far this season.

Getting groundballs and missing a decent amount of bats paired with reasonably enough control has Jurrjens profiled as a solid two or three in a rotation.

Hudson's groundballs are down a bit from last year's incredible rate of over 60%, but he's managed to up his strikeout rate in compensation keeping his overall line the same.

Star-divide

Likely Starters:
C Brian McCann*
1 Mark Teixeira^
2 Kelly Johnson*
3 Chipper Jones^
S Yunel Escobar
L Brandon Jones
C Gregor Blanco*
R Jeff Francoeur

This is a very underrated offense lead by the always underrated Chipper Jones. They possess a 112 OPS+ as a team and as of late they've managed to ditch some of their more under-performing members.

CONTEXT

Knick knack patty whack another dog thrown to the bone. Johnny Mac goes away and we get to enjoy a whole new unknown person in nominal charge. What majestic sweeping changes might we see? Who wants to bet on none?

Are we still supposed to root for losses now that the team has fired the two more visible managers? I say yes. For one, we still want a shot at Strasburg or whomever becomes the consensus best talent next year. For two, enough losses might get Lincoln in the hot seat. For three, barring that, we don't want the upper front office to become complacent with Pelekoudas and Riggelman.

THIS SERIES BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Sweetwater IPA
Sweetwater Brewing. Atlanta, GA

A full on IPA with loads of hops. It's a light drink, but Atlanta is a hot town and the rule of thumb is that the hotter the weather outside, the lighter the beer inside (the bottle).

Was not impressed with Sweetwater when I visited my son in Atlanta three summers ago.
I disagree with the hotter it is outside, the lighter the beer.
The hotter (spicier) the food, the lighter the beer. I'll accept that one.

I always drink Raj with Indian food.

Atlanta's food is not spicy.

It’s hot and disgusting there, but the food is not worth a light beer.

Not sure I'm with you there

For spicier food I like something with fuller body to supplement the flavor. Light beer is flavorless with spicy food because you can’t taste it over the food. Just like I don’t want a rich stout, IPA, etc with a salad or cut of fish, since it would overwhelm the taste buds and make the food effectively tasteless.

I'm not saying it's how you should drink;

just how beers are typically produced. It’s why summer seasons are almost always light and winter beers are darker.

This works for me.

I tend to gravitate towards stouts and porters in the winter, while moving towards the lighter beers like pale ale and the like in summer.

except

Big Time’s summer barley wine. I forget what they called it.

And that's light=color

Hefeweizen is a pretty thick beer tastewise, but it’s light in color.

Summer = Weissbier
Can't argue that.

Or maybe you can, I’d be curious to see the counterpoint.

Yes, more national TV exposure for the team!

Also means I get to watch for once, since I don’t want to pay for MLB.tv to watch the Viva Strasburg M’s

Except you have to watch them do the damn chop.

I loathe, despise and detest the Braves.

=( I love the Braves...

I grew up rooting for them because the Mariners were never on TV (or playing games for that matter) after September

I love the braves too because they gave me a team to root for during the playoffs when I was growing up.

Plus I love pitching.

I'm sorry, I can no longer be friends with either of you.
I hate the Braves..can we be friends?
Perhaps.

The only other baseball requirements I have involve teams that all Mariners fans should hate.

Lets see

Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, A’s, I can’t think of another team for the Mariners to hate?

Padres, Royals

How did you forget our BITTER BITTER RIVALS to the south and our only competition for Grass Creek, WY?

I can't believe I forgot the RivalsĀ®

With our long storied history between us and them.

Also I would love to figure out who the people of Grass Creek, WY actually cheer for. Probably either the Rockies if they are cheering by vicinity, or Yankees or Red Sox.

Growing up in Memphis, you had to pick the Braves or the Cards.

I picked the Cards. Even though my attachment to them died out years ago, my hatred for the Braves remains as strong as ever, albeit for much different reasons.

Practically being born in Busch Stadium means that I have residual love for the Cardinals.
They're a team I root for and all, I just don't follow them closely.

I was actually a closet Astros fan growing up because I thought their uniforms were the shit, but my Aunt would’ve beat me if I confessed to rooting for anyone besides the Cards.

o rlly
That must be intentional.
JI is getting sweet on you now

BTW, here is a typical Cardinal fan for you.

Photobucket

He already is attracted to my excellent punctuation.
I choose to be ignorant of this.
Considering the spelling I though it was you JI
Note the kid in the yellow shorts

I’ve seen this pic before and assumed that that’s the “morans” kid. Take note of his shirt…

If this is "Oh really?"

The story is that my mom had skybox seats while pregnant with me. She had to climb the stairs in Busch Stadium and after the game she had to go to the hospital in labor. I came three weeks early. I really wanted to see that game.

No one appreciates when I type like a 12 year old girl.
I really wanted to see that game.

Your plan still failed. >:(

I know.

They lost, too. To the Mets.

Born a sucker.
I would think my presence on this site already made that well known.
Good point...I was wondering how you fit in so well here.
I went to college in STL

and I hate the Cardinals and Cardinals fans. They’re loyal as hell, but kind of hickish, and a bit ignorant. Scott Spiezio?? Please, if he was clutch on the Mariners, I’d STILL hate him. Pineiro and Franklin? C’mon, losers. LaRussa? God I hate him. Too much Ozzi Smith worship, not enough Stan Musial worship. Thats all for now…

Too much Ozzie[sic] Smith worship, not enough Stan Musial worship

Huh? Stan Musial has his own fucking statue.

Ah the irony in correcting that spelling.

Yeah, I see myself in the mirror and think, “kinda hickish. bit ignorant.”

I used to play as the Braves all the time

on Hardball 3 growing up.

Chipper!
Justice!
Lemke!
Blauser!
Smoltz!
Maddux!
Glavine!

I think I knew more about them than the Mariners for several years.

What about Pendleton?!!!
Terry Pendleton!

Oh man I forgot about him. And Crime Dog! Steve Avery, Brad Clontz, Mark Wohlers, Kent Mercker!

Why, why, why are you mean?
I've learned that I enjoy being mean

its not really a personal thing against other people. I just enjoy being mean.

John Rocker must be your favorite Brave ever.
The only way I could like John Rocker less is if he had played for the Mariners
Ugh no

I was never a Rocker fan.

That's one dude who has more than a few screws loose.
Did you see the panel he was on with Baker?
Heard about it, but I didn't see it.
He's not a dumbass like Kruk or Steve Phillips.
So he's a smart asshole?
He seemed to be somewhat intelligent.

Baker thinks he’s a pretty smart dude.

Takes all kinds I suppose.
Being a smart bigot is worse than being a dumb/ignortant bigot.
I used to know a ton about them too, since they were always on TBS.

Now that there is baseball and baseball highlight shows on 5 different channels at any given time, I don’t follow them as closely anymore.

Not sure I ever ROOTED for them, I just loved baseball so I would watch any game that was on TV.

I used to watch them all the time because that was the only way to see the Expos on TV.
These are names that cause rage to boil within me.

Every single flippin’ one. Every one.

How can you hate Greg Maddux?

He was downright amazing. A true master of pitching.

I can understand hatred of Glavine though. I hate him too. And the Atlanta fans. Cannot even sell out playoff games? Unworthy.

Well the Mariners are in a once-in-a-lifetime race for Strasburg

and they can’t even sell out their stadium. What a shame…

It's easier/cheaper/less psychologically damaging to watch it in a bar
The alcohol cushions the blow.
That and the antics of drunk Robert
All I've got is the alcohol.
Except for that one hilarious evening, me too.
I actually have a morbid curiousity regarding drunk Robert.
I sense a money making proposition
I read that as "I sense a monkey mating prostitution..."
Another money making proposition
I saw monkey, too.
That's racist.
I'm impressed that was said without gifs

You’ve earned a rec, my friend

I sense fear. On my part.
I've only roofied myself
Seriously?
Did it look like a tic-tac?

Or was it intentional?

Did you feel used afterward?
Damn those delicious 1.9 calorie mints...
Chugging random beers in public places=Bad idea
That is fantastic.

Was this at Safeco? Please say yes.

Yes

It was the last thing that I remember for about 5 hours. But hey at least got to miss Willie bat so it wasn’t all that bad.

Maddox is about all I can give on.

I also would love to punch Jones in the face.

Just Chipper?
Well no.

But I don’t want to scare y’all with my rage.

Plus Maddux looks like a normal dude

pot bellied, glasses, etc etc. I remember being okay with getting glasses in the 9th grade because I knew Greg Maddux wore glasses. I think I tried to get a similar style to him for my first pair.

I'll never forgive them for abandoning Milwaukee
Fuck the Braves.
I can't tell if JI hates the Braves or has an unhealthy attraction to them.
If it's the former JI is allowed to be my friend.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL199610170.shtml

Is there a reason you're reliving such pain?
You borught it up.
Oh so you were proving you could be my friend?
Any chance I get to rant about things that make me angry I take.
It's so impressive how you spell correctly when you're angered.
I hadnt noticed.
Fuck Tony LaRussa for not starting Ray Lankford.
Tell us how you really feel.
Actually Lankford was injured

it only makes me slightly less angry.

Ah, after seeing the new tagline, I understand what "LL - Deciduous" meant
wouldn't we be vidrophobic?

Why are we attracted to the absorption of Jose Vidros?

It will be cool to finally see the M's at Turner field.
Where is the best place to find tRA for all MLB pitchers?
Well

You should start here

Does Grahm have 2008 stuff somewhere? Or does he just compile it on a case by case basis and at the end of the year for everyone?

He's got a classified spreadsheet somewhere that auto calculates it

He’s told us he inputs the data by hand though

muhahahahaha
Can everyone please join me

for a brief moment of what the fuck with regards to Jorge Campillo?
...
...
Ok thanks that was great. I feel better.

Can I get an amen?
Ummm yeah pretty much

To make myself feel slightly better about life, I’m going to live in a bubble protected by the belief that his success is 100% related to the league change and he would be terrible in the AL.

yep

He wasn’t that bad for us though. He just couldn’t throw more than like 5 pitches without his arm falling off

Blue Jays hire Cito Gaston??

Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while

WTF?

I liked Gibbons. I thought he was a good manager. He was creative with his bullpen, he got in afistfight with Ted Lilly. What’s not to like?

Cito’s an idiot. He though Joe Carter was good.

And Ernie Whitt was awesome.

He kept pointing out obscure rule violations to the umps.

So would you take Gibbons here?
Yeah, I probably would.

Gibbons generally handled pitchers like he knew what the hell he was doing. He did tend to leave them in quite a while, but when Roy Halladay’s on your staff that’s a winning strategy.

Before Ryan blew out his elbow Gibbons often brought him in in the 8th. Gibbons used his starters as relievers on their throw days when he had cause (Halladay has 2.1 innings of relief this season).

As far as hitters and lineups go, he didn’t have much to work with, but he didn’t ever bat Eckstein 3rd. And when Hillenbrand sucked Gibbons didn’t play him (and then challenged him to a fight).

Such good points, I'd make them again.
Chipper, Chipper, Chipper, will he bat 400?

That’s all we heard when the Braves played the Angels. That and the hilarious accident when Chipper fouled a ball off the batting cage in BP and it ricocheted back and hit him in the eye, throwing himself out of the starting game that night.

Best night of my life.
You need better nights
Obviously.
Although Chipper has been on the DL a lot in his career.

So I suppose you’ve had a lot of ‘good nights’

The best nights are when his arrogant face gets smashed.

See, anger.

I have a feeling you'll give us some solid GTE when(if) this team is in contention.
She has a pretty high ceiling
High ceiling for what?
GTE
Fine. I admit, I don't know what that means.
Game Thread Emotion
Ah. Oh, I'll bring it.

I am full of fantastic insults.

Our top GTE remains EnglishMariner's "Fuck My Pussy"

You’ve got a long way to go, rookie.

Probably not what you'll hear from me.
That'd just be awkward
But it was a classic thread.
I'm all for the original thread.

It’d just be awkward if NOLA said it.

Yeah that wouldn't work so well in your situation...
Don't worry, I have plenty of clever, witty remarks just waiting.

Now if I could only have a chance to use them.

It might count as Corcobaiting if you said it.
Don't really want to go there.
Smart decision.
HAHAHA
You're mean too.
I wasn't laughing at you

I was laughing because I assumed that the confusion was my fault

Ok. Retracted.
It's usually a safe assumption

Plus I just laugh a lot. I think it comes from not taking myself very seriously.

Chipper Jones

Great hitting 3B, or greatest hitting 3B?

Career line is better than Mike Schmidt's, though his OPS+ is 145 compared to Schmidt's 147

So by raw stats, yeah, Chipper is better, but based on the league averages of the day, Schmidt was just a litttttle bit better than his competition compared to Chipper.

Regardless, I don’t care if you people hate Chipper Jones. That guy’s awesome. Motherfucker can hit.

I have all the respect in the world for Chipper Jones.

I think he’s a total d-bag, but he’s a helluva’ hitter and the most underrated player of his generation.

the most underrated player of his generation.

...besides Jim Edmonds.

Jim Edmonds was rad, but I'm not sure he was underrated.
*as underrated.
Jim Edmonds was the best player on the Cardinals from 2000-04,

and McGwire and Pujols got all the attention.

He was the second best player in the NL in 2002 and 2004 (only behind Bonds) and didn’t receive serious MVP consideration. This guy is one of the greatest centerfielders to play the game and he won’t even end up in the HOF.

You may very well be correct.

I partially retract my previous statement.

Beltre was better in '04?
Why does he secrete d-baggery?

I’ve never understood this, but it’s something you just know by looking at him.

He reminds me of my family that decided to stay in the south.

Those people suck, so I assume he does, too.

wait... why's Chipper a d-bag?

Am I missing something? Seems like a nice enough guy to me. Kind of ugly though… that’s probably NOLA’s closet reason for disliking him. Ashamed of liking an ugly dude.

He's not ugly...
Um no. Otis Nixon. That's an ugly dude.

But I echo acblue—he looks like a dumbass good ol’ boy. Those are the faces I long to punch.

Does he, or does he not

perpetually have a cold sore? Always looks like he does to me.

Yeah, Mike Schmidt was awesome

It’d be interesting to see who was better at reaching base compared to their peers.

Schmidt played better D.
Jones is pretty mediocre defensively.
