With preliminary word in that Felix came out of this all right, I feel like I should offer an explanation of the community's response to those who may not have been watching. This was the most insane we've gotten in months, after all, and in a meaningless game that Felix survived without major injury, some of you might find our reaction a wee bit histrionic.
Here's the deal: Felix is all we have. I know we've talked about it a million times before, but on a team that's no good and borderline unwatchable, Felix is the one thing that keeps us coming back, the one thing capable of raising our spirits. The one thing. Yeah, Jeff Clement's hanging around, and Erik Bedard's pretty good when he hasn't like stubbed his toe or accidentally nicked his hand with a hammer, but Felix is the guy that stops you in your tracks and makes you think that anything is possible. In a midsummer squall, he is our beacon. If there's one thing left about which we can still get excited, it's Felix, and we can't imagine how empty life would be without him.
So with that in mind, today was to be something extraordinary. You could just feel it over the course of the first few innings. All the necessary elements were in place. We had a bitchin' shiny matchup between two of the most talented pitchers in baseball. We had the King on top of his game on the hill, getting Met after Met to put the ball on the ground. And we had the impossibly mind-destroying Felix grand slam just to raise the bar and prove that we still don't know the first thing about what Felix can accomplish. The story had already been written - Felix would shut out New York on the road and win with the support of his own home run. All that was left to do was watch the whole thing unfold before our eyes, and it was all we could do to contain ourselves in the meantime. This was set up to be the game that made worthwhile the entire season.
And then It happened.
This wasn't about Felix getting seriously hurt. It was never about Felix getting seriously hurt. That was in the back of our minds, of course, but what fueled the rage was the understanding that, in the blink of an eye, we had been robbed of our fairy tale. This wasn't at all how things were supposed to go. Felix was supposed to hit the home run, shut down the opposition, and be carried off the field a hero. Instead he was carried off wounded, carried off against his will, without so much as a win for his efforts. In a flash all of our exuberance was stopped in its tracks, and where one minute we were preparing to celebrate the achievement of a season, the next we were forced to deal with the reality that the greatest Mariner moment in years and years had been - in true Mariner fashion - followed by tragedy. This was everything we've been talking about. This was the universe once again demonstrating its refusal to allow us any sort of sustaining delight. And people generally don't take too well to rude and untimely reminders.
In the end, it's not as bad as it felt when it happened. Maybe we're just taking our cues from Felix, who was all smiles in the locker room after the game. I'm not sure. I'm certainly not anywhere close to as angry as I was a few hours ago. After all, we still have the King Felix grand freaking slam, and that'll live forever. But while things have settled down, I will defend to the death our right to get emotional. It was absolutely justified at the time, and if you disagree with that, we're not the problem - the fault is yours for not understanding just how much Felix Hernandez means to me, to this team, and to this entire community. Felix is the Mariners, and I pray to the high heavens that I never turn into the kind of fan who doesn't appreciate the significance of that.

I'm glad I chose to watch this game
Felix’s slam was the most badass thing I’ve seen.
Mariner John - June 24, 2008
Nothing tops the Felix GS this season
For the week Seattle has had sports-wise, we needed that one moment of euphoria.
Maybe the Mariners lose 106 games. Maybe the Sonics leave town. Maybe Julius Jones, Matt Hasselbeck and Lofa Tatupu destroy their ACL’s walking out of a cheesecake factory before their Pre-Season game against the Raiders.
But we will always have King Felix at 4:32 PM PDT on 6/23/08 against Johan Santana, hitting a Grand Slam with his eyes closed. It’s like the Jordan Snipes 88-foot shot to win a game only it’s ours.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
I just want to say Jeff, I randomly gave you applause
While sitting alone in my living room, I busted in to applause. Long live the King.
seattlesundevil - June 24, 2008
Jesus Jeff, you outdo yourself yet again.
I may have only started posting irregularly since last August, but I’ve long been lurking at this site for this very reason, you have a way with words and you know how to touch the soul of the die-hard Mariner fan.
As for Felix: Long live the King.
Omerta - June 24, 2008
F.E.L.I.X
Felix Hernandez hit a Grand Slam off of Johan Santana.
Goose - June 24, 2008
Amen.
And doesn’t it just feel like he’s building to a no-hitter? I honestly wouldn’t be surprised. I’d be pumped, excited, exuberant, cocky, everything but surprised because when Felix gets in one of those grooves like he did for the first three innings today where it’s just groundball after groundball early in the count of a K if it goes a little longer, he just makes it look so damn easy.
He’s been getting into more and more of those grooves lately and has even stretched some of them out to four and five innings. What’s left is for him to figure out how to survive when his control slips for an inning or two as it always seems to at some point and ride out that way with some better pitch sequencing.
Get the man signed already. Give him what he wants and then give him more and add more years onto it.
Matthew - June 24, 2008
Bud Smith threw a no hitter
so i like Felix’s chances.
JI - June 24, 2008
Needs defense
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
Come to think of it, that was a good defensive team
Even if Pujols was in left, and what was left of McGwire was playing first.
JI - June 24, 2008
I'd love to see some research comparing say Felix's chances of tossing a no hitter
with our defense versus Boston’s defense. If I remember correctly, in Buchholz’s no-hitter last year and Lester’s no hitter this year, Crisp and Ellsbury, respectively made fantastic SC Top 10 worthy catches to rob guys of hits.
There must be a reason that Varitek has caught four no-hitters. Guess it could be luck, but at some point you gotta figure that team is doing something right, and looking at their current lineup, the only really bad defensive player is Manny. The rest of em range from meh to very good.
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
Now that I know he's healthy, I am still giddy over Felix's slam.
Seriously, that’s one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. Felix has to be the greatest man currently alive.
BrettJMiller - June 24, 2008
What's most impressive about it...
Opposite field, first pitch, or the fact he caught up to and owned 94 MPH heat?
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
The fact that it was Johan fucking Santana throwing it to him, I think.
BrettJMiller - June 24, 2008
Agreed
He hit a homer off Johan Santana. It was like a big-ol’ “fuck you” on behalf of all American League pitchers.
Orlando Rays - June 24, 2008
For the record Carlos Beltran did nothing wrong
However I reserve the right to hate him for a while, much like Brian Roberts and JD Drew.
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
Our love for Bocok and Fahey balances these things out.
JI - June 24, 2008
Both are serving time in the minors though
Fin - June 24, 2008
You know, the first thing my dad said to me was "it was a clean slide"
I knew he was right, but I still told him I wanted to see Carlos Beltran die a painful death by the end of the night.
Rational thought takes a back seat to any sort of Felix related GTE
BrettJMiller - June 24, 2008
My hatred towards Brian Roberts is done.
Getting one of his young relatives to cheer for J.J. Putz was retribution enough for me.
I’m with you on Beltran—although, really, my first reaction was to yell at Felix to get off the friggin’ plate (and out of JC’s way).
JD Drew can still go to hell…
PositivePaul - June 24, 2008
Yeah, after a few views,
Felix put his foot right between Beltran and the plate at the last second. And from the top view, you can even see Beltran’s foot almost going around Felix’s, but obviously not far enough. It was perfectly clean.
Teej - June 24, 2008
Man, I hate NY
I would love to visit New York soon, but more than that, I would love to burn media that covers NY teams to the ground.
This is the biggest cuntface game story I’ve read in a long time. Completely down-played the Felix slam, as if a Special Olympian hit it. OMG, you throw a high 93 mile an hour fastball to a strong PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL player, and its a fluke that he made good contact.
“The ball hit the bat; the bat didn’t hit the ball”. Fuck you Ramon Castro.
batura - June 24, 2008
I view mlb.com websites for the teams as propaganda anyways.
So I just choose to ignore it.
Fin - June 24, 2008
Fuck them.
That article pissed me off much more than it should have. ”’C’mon’”? Fuck you, writer. The man took a piss all over your team, but it was all luck? Bullfuckingshit.
Ramon Castro can choke on a dick.
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
Roman Castro (and many of the mlb.com writers) are terrible at their jobs.
It isn’t worth getting pissed off.
BrianL - June 24, 2008
I know.
The weird thing is I wasn’t mad last night. As I told LFoJL, I was in total shock for like 2 innings after it happened. So my anger is coming now.
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
I think Felix will be the first one to tell you it was a fluke
but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
Felix is so good he doesn't need to open his eyes to hit Grand Funk Blasts.
There has to be a terrible Jedi joke here, but I don’t want to compare Felix to Mark Hamill.
Jed MC - June 24, 2008
I'd rather Felix's right arm stay intact
Graham MacAree - June 24, 2008
Dude
It’s Marty Noble. He’s like the worst beat writer ever. And it’s MLB.com.
JohnPeterson - June 24, 2008
Standing ovation, Jeff.
Aaron Campeau - June 24, 2008
I heard about Felix' slam over the phone.
My first reaction was “say that again?” My second reaction was “My God, LL’s got to be going mad right now.”
Then I was informed that Felix had to be taken out of the game before 5 innings, and my first reaction was “say that again?” followed by “My God, LL’s got to be going mad right now.”
The next thought that entered my head after all this was “Allright, who the fuck is responsible for the slide? Public Enemy Number One.”
Two Rs and Two Ls - June 24, 2008
So yeah,
I remember when Felix was first exposed to Interleague play. Several times I would think to myself, “Man, how awesome would it be if Felix hit a homerun here.”
Yea, this is about a million times better and virtually untoppable.
ThundaPC - June 24, 2008
Y'know what's really fucking sad?
That’s the first time you’ve pulled out the “AIR whomever” picture all season.
The Typical Idiot Fan - June 24, 2008
Just for giggles and facepalms
This season’s top 10 hitters as ranked by WPA:
So that’s 4 pitchers, 2 ex-Mariners and 1 AAA utility guy.
Mariners Baseball: Feel The Force.
Alex B - June 24, 2008
Flex would look good in a Rays outfit.
Just saying.
Sylar - June 24, 2008
He's ours and you can't have him, dammit!
BrianL - June 24, 2008
We don't need pitchers, we need bats
Preferably RH bats.
Orlando Rays - June 24, 2008
Um, I seem to think the guy that homered off Santana last night was a right handed bat
that being said, Felix is ours and you cannot have him =)
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
But we/I
really, really, really, really, really want him.
Tyler - June 24, 2008
OK, you can have him
for Longoria, Kazmir, Upton, Pena and $50M in cash. Oh and PTBNL, who will be David Price
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
There's a reason Carlos Zambrano isn't a position player
It’s the same reason Felix isn’t either.
Orlando Rays - June 24, 2008
Shut up, Felix can do whatever Felix wants
just like Babe Ruth said – he could hit .700, but they’d all be singles!
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
It wouldn't hurt.
JI - June 24, 2008
My wife was talking to me when Felix got hurt.
Her mouth kept moving, but I didn’t hear a word – I was too focused on listening to Dave on the radio. She just shook her head and walked away. A couple minutes later when I told her what was happening and why I was frowning, she said “I’m sorry – Felix and Ichiro are the only reasons to listen to the game.”
Jed MC - June 24, 2008
I propose a new LL graphic
To show how awesome Felix is:
Orlando Rays - June 24, 2008
It looks like he has something in his eye.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - June 24, 2008
Felix is ours, and whomever is left in the M's f.o. needs to give him an extension f-ing yesterday
The price just keeps going up, you fools.
lemonverbena - June 24, 2008
So while i agree with all this stuff about GTE,
I still wouldn’t mind Beltran being sent to Darfur.
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
Also, Jeff,
if you were GM, what would you offer Felix?
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
$60m/5yr with a 2014 option
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
So that
buys out 3 arb years, 2 FA years with an option for a 3rd?
I like it.
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
The team does not
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
The team is very dumb
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
Yes
You wouldn’t believe what they’re offering.
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
I'm kinda glad I don't know.
dbroncos31 - June 24, 2008
Will the current regime attempt anything?
Robert - June 24, 2008
Don't know yet, probably won't try to negotiate much midseason
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
For any non LL lurkers
we have a specific rule covering this situation already
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
That might need to be amended for Felix.
I don’t think everyone had calmed down ten minutes after the last pitch.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 24, 2008
Obviously there can be extenuating circumstances under time of heavy duress

Kenji Johjima is now the backup, contract be damned. No word yet on whether or not a position change is in Kenji’s future, or if it means Jamie Burke is now expendable. At the very least, it means that the Clement @ 1B idea has finally been crushed.

Let's put it this way:
If Clement runs away with the catcher job the rest of the year, I find it hard to believe Johjima would be put back there, given that a fair number pitchers don’t like throwing to the guy.
Unfortunately, thanks to whoever it is who called the shots on signing Johjima (I strongly suspect it was done at a level above Bavasi’s pay grade- please note that Kaz, Ichiro and Joh have gotten midseason extensions, the only other guy who’s gotten that is Raul, I think), he has basically zero trade value, and is back to hitting like crap again.
eponymous_coward - June 24, 2008

Best non-Felix part of the game:
8th inning. The wave is going around the park and one section isn’t doing it. So all the dumbass Mets fans around me ignore the game and are yelling at the section to do it. So finally the section joins in, and there is a huge cheer—right as Ramon Castro gets abused by RRS for Strike 3. One of the funniest/most-embarassing things I have ever seen. Then the next batter gets to 3-0 before getting K-ed as well; the Mets “fans” finally pick up on what is going on. I was with 3 friends who are all Mets fans and they were very ashamed.
Then when the Mets score to make it 5-2, you would have thought they won the WS. Everyone in front of me jumped up with their arms in the air and screaming. I said “calm the fuck down this game’s over in 2 batters.”

Katal LM - June 24, 2008
It just occured to me that this actually happened:
JI - June 24, 2008
Thank God it wasn't all a dream.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 24, 2008
My mind still can't grasp the awesomeness of this.
BrianL - June 24, 2008
I called a Felix HR sometime this year on Sunday when talking to Fuzz
Robert - June 24, 2008
BIGGER
Wilder. - June 24, 2008
Oh my God.
Watching this will never ever get old.
Omerta - June 24, 2008
Has someone edited Felix's entry on the LL wiki to read "FELIX HIT A GRAND SLAM OFF JOHAN SANTANA!" yet?
BrianL - June 24, 2008
There was a rumor circling the stadium back in 2006
KOMO 1000 used to have a sign right below the upper deck in left field that had a ridiculously small hole that if a Mariner ever hit a ball into, a fan would win a million dollars. Right before interleague that year, Felix miraculously became the first person to ever hit one into it. KOMO canceled the contest the next day.
Robert - June 24, 2008
That's a great story
but probably completely apocryphal.
pdb - June 24, 2008
part of me
wants to go back and look at those game threads again. In a sick, masochistic kind of way
CKel - June 24, 2008
The GT Part 4 is actually pretty hilarious on second read
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
And the third read
Graham MacAree - June 24, 2008
And fourth
Robert - June 24, 2008
Not on the fifth
it’s Gallagher by them
JI - June 24, 2008
It also hurts if you have a headache.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 24, 2008
That's the best part of game threads, going back and reading them later.
Goose - June 24, 2008
The Felix injury scare game last year is pretty funny in retrospect
Robert - June 24, 2008
I miss typing in caps
Robert - June 24, 2008
Apology Accepted
JohnPeterson - June 24, 2008
Feel free to win the next two games, by the way.
BrianL - June 24, 2008
unlikely
I contend that the Mets suck more than the Mariners. At least your suckiness will get you that pitcher you want. Ours will mean diddlysquat and further decimation of the farm system in an effort to obtain veterans with large contracts who are on the verge of breakdown.
JohnPeterson - June 24, 2008
We have some starting pitchers and outfielders you might be interested in
also a veteran catcher.
Matthew - June 24, 2008
No, but hmmm...
This Vidro character looks interesting. I remember him from when I was general manager of the Expos. He is a great player!
-Omar Minaya
JohnPeterson - June 24, 2008
He's latin!
Matthew - June 24, 2008
SOLD!
You have to throw in Richie Sexson though. Keep those ratios right where they are. I’m going to have to demote Robinson Cancel. He’s a key ingredient in our clubhouse, but this move will clearly improve the team.
JohnPeterson - June 24, 2008
Have you heard the good word of Erik Bedard lately?
Robert - June 24, 2008
Omar Minaya for M's GM in 2009!
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
Its funny because its going to happen
Robert - June 24, 2008
At least he would sign Felix.
Matthew - June 24, 2008
Is it sad that if that is all that I want.
Robert - June 24, 2008
That's a question.
JI - June 24, 2008
I was too busy checking my spelling errors in the subject line
Robert - June 24, 2008
I hate that.

I like the convenience of avoiding two extra mouse clicks
Robert - June 24, 2008
By the way, since I'm sure you're all hanging on tenterhooks about this...I finally finished Ocarina of Time with a 100% completion rate
Yes, I needed a FAQ to find that last Golden Skulltula. Fuck you. It was hiding under a silver rock in Zora’s Fountain, how was I gonna find that?

I just got back from shopping for cowboy boots
Katal LM - June 24, 2008

seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
I just got up (Gotta love graveyards!)
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
You sleep in a graveyard?
Phil Hatzenbuehler - June 24, 2008
Dude that'd be sweet. I work graveyard shifts.
They start late in the night and continue early in the morning, nobody knows what day it is when the shift ends.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
Day is night, night is day.
I know it’s my day off when I’m awake at 10 in the morning.
Goose - June 24, 2008
I know it's my day off...
When I’m actually doing something outside in the afternoon instead of worrying if I got enough sleep to make it through the shift.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
What hours do you work?
I’m 11PM to 7 AM.
Goose - June 24, 2008
10P -- 6:30 A.
There’s an option for an hour lunch in there but why.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
That's the great thing about working at a casino on graveyard.
Lunch is whenever I decide to head downstairs and raid the kitchen.
Goose - June 24, 2008
How's the clientele at a casino after hours?
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
The one-word answer had better be "drunk"
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
More like High.
A majority are crackheads who cruse the machines looking for whatever scraps are still left that they can play on.
Goose - June 24, 2008
"I'll put it all on NINE because that's how many drags I got off this last joint."
Gotta love those people. They’re either on the top of the world and think they can’t be stopped or are really easy to lead around because they’re coming down so fast.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
They're kinda fun to fuck with sometimes.
Every once in a while when it’s slow, I see one of the Tribal Gaming Agents walking around and cashing out the machines that still have a few cents left on them, just to piss off all the crackheads.
Goose - June 24, 2008
So... has one of the crackheads ever won a big jackpot playing someone elses leftovers?
I’d have to imagine it might be amusing to watch someone fork over $20,000 cash to a crackhead and then watch him walk out
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
Not that I'm aware of.
Though it’d be pretty hard for them to do so, because you have to bet the max to win any jackpot.
Goose - June 24, 2008
When Felix got injured, it was the first time I almost cried while I was at a sporting event.
When he was on the ground, I was all right, and the cool Mets fan next to me was comforting me. But then when he tried to walk it off and throw a pitch, and ended up doubled over in pain, I almost lost it. That was with all the Mets fans around me laughing at Felix. The guy in front of me and his kid(!!!) were taunting Felix and congratulating Beltran. I just sat down; I felt sick to my stomach.
The cool Mets fan next to me was a guy who made fun of every player on the Mets and was completely apathetic to whether the Mets would win or not. He was like a true Mariners fan. He also offered to buy me ice cream which is kind of creepy.
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 24, 2008
If he offered to buy you ice cream before the Felix injury it's kind of creepy
If he offered afterwards, he’s being nice… and still kind of creepy
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
p.s. thank you dbroncos for the great seat
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 24, 2008
I dunno...

WHERE'S CARLOS BELTRAN?
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
LAYING ON A CURB SOMEWHERE WITH HIS FACE CRUSHED IN AND HIS TOUNGE MISSING
BECAUSE IT WAS CUT OUT WITH A JAGGED METAL SHOELACE!
Goose - June 24, 2008
I peaked last night
Jeff Sullivan - June 24, 2008
I'm going to NY next week
In other news, Carlos Beltran is going to bite the curb in about seven days.
Katal LM - June 24, 2008
Is anyone actually upset with Beltran?
planB - June 24, 2008
Not really. It was a clean, normal slide. Felix was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Goose - June 24, 2008
Good slide and I'm grateful he didn't Pujols Felix.
GoodKeith - June 24, 2008
Not particularly, but it's fun to casually threaten other teams star players after watching your own get injured
seattlebruin - June 24, 2008
I blame Manny Ramirez.
planB - June 24, 2008
Also, there were "ralley fries" girls behind me who called everyone they knew when they found out they were on TV
How the fuck did “ralley fries” make it to NY and how could anyone spell rally wrong?
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 24, 2008
No spellcheck option on Sharpies.
