There's a bevy of great games going on today and with the option for a five-day free trial of MLB.tv (warning: it's one of those sign up and you can cancel for free in the first five days sort of trials) you can certainly take advantage.
1600 PDT: Braves v Marlins
Reason to watch: Jorge Campillo is starting for the Braves.
1605 PDT: Phillies v Reds
Reason to watch: Griffey going for 600, Utley's homered in five straight games and Jay Bruce is awesome.
1605 PDT: Red Sox v Rays
Reason to watch: Duh.
1605 PDT: Yankees v Blue Jays
Reason to watch: Root for Joba Chamberlain to either fail because that would be awesome or succeed in the vain hope that the Mariners take notice and follow suit with Morrow.
1705 PDT: Brewers v Diamondbacks
Reason to watch: Randy Johnson is starting and is tied with Roger Clemens in career strikeouts.
1711 PDT: White Sox v Royals
Reason to watch: Fuck Josh Hamilton, Zach Greinke continues his feel gooder story.
1905 PDT: Athletics v Tigers
Reason to watch: Dontrelle Willis returns to the mound. He's thrown six innings, walked 11 and struck out nobody this year. The Mariners almost traded for him last summer.
1910 PDT: Mariners v Angels
Reason to watch: Erik Bedard? Jeremy Reed might get to start again. Witness Richie Sexson's miracle open stance!
1910 PDT: Dodgers v Rockies
Reason to watch: Rockies are currently between us and Steven Strasburg.
1915 PDT: Giants v Mets
Reason to watch: Pedro Martinez returns to the mound opposite Barry Zito who has walked or hit as many batters (32) as he's struck out (32). The Mariners tried to pay him $100 million dollars.

Ahem
Cardinals v. Nationals
Odals Perez and Kyle Lohse. Witness a battle of pitchers Bavasi would never attempt to sign. Also: Pujols.
JI - June 3, 2008
I can't believe I live in a world in which Albert Pujols is underrated somehow
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
After 2001, I never thought Ichrio would become underrated as well.
But, yeah, the MSM thought more of Pujols when he was playing the OF and Jim Edmonds was clearly the better player.
JI - June 3, 2008
It seems the case that usually anyone who is very good for a long stretch of time
gets underrated in the middle of their career because people just get used to the performance level. They make up for it by being overrated at the tail end of their career when people forget to realize he’s now old.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
I like how people don't even seem to care that Pujols doubles as arguably the best defensive 1B in baseball
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
He's like a average to good 3B playing first.
He’d probably still be there if it weren’t for Ed Wade and his elbow.
JI - June 3, 2008
defense doesn't matter
Matthew - June 3, 2008
1Bs and LFs have zero influence on defense
which, as you say, doesn’t matter.
marc w - June 3, 2008
I have to give Joe Buck (?) credit
for at least posing the question whether Assface
1B > Ortiz1B during the LCS. Of course one of the other goons in the booth wanted a Assface3B, Papi1B, and Manny on the bench.JI - June 3, 2008
What in the fuck happened here?
JI - June 3, 2008
You did
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
Obviously
But this is frightening new territory.
So ”@” is a no go on SBN 2.0?
JI - June 3, 2008
Your typos are metastisizing to SBN's code
marc w - June 3, 2008
unless you hit like Omar Vizquel
JI - June 3, 2008
I might be wrong but you seem to be implying something about our ability to evaluate pitchers
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
I'm excited about our signing of Mike Hampton and Jason Schmidt come Dec' 09.
Along with Hank Blalock to replace Adrian Beltre at 3B and Adam LaRoche to be the new franchise 1B.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
No, seriously,
Chan Ho Park has figured it out. Look at his ERA!
Why are you laughing? This move gives the M’s flexibility (bullpen or as a starter), and the man fits the park to a tee! Ooh, a pun!
marc w - June 3, 2008
You must mean Jon Garland an CC Sabathia.
JI - June 3, 2008
oh that would be JAn 09
nvm
JI - June 3, 2008
If the Mariners so much as even think about Jon Garland this winter I will end them
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
I will laugh
but I don’t think it’ll happen because all of the starting 5 are under contract.
JI - June 3, 2008
I could see Washburn going away and being replaced in hilarious fashion
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
STOP
Please talk about ice hockey for a while.
marc w - June 3, 2008
The Penguins didn't deserve their awesome win last night
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
That game was nuts
I was totally expecting the Wings to just add an empty net goal and for them to win. That was the most exciting hockey game I’ve ever watched.
ColeFitz - June 3, 2008
They won't outright release him
They’ll give him a shot to bounce back if Morrow is anything less than John Smoltz… and even then, you had to twist their fucking arm to put Piniero in the rotation (back when he was good).
JI - June 3, 2008
I think Washburn could be traded
and I could also see Batista either getting bumped to the bullpen or going back to the NL. Which would free up a rotation spot, which would…
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
Maybe to make room for CC, but if/when Garland's ERA goes in the shitter
I don’t see the M’s willing to upset their beloved veterans to make a slight upgrade. Plus, I have a hard time seeing them trading Washburn unless he is Jeff Fassero ‘99 bad, and Ed Wade is out of pitchers.
JI - June 3, 2008
Garland's ERA won't go in the shitter
He’s an Angel. Angels’ ERAs don’t go in the shitter.
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
But to be fair, one got dumped on us after he turned into a turd, and the other was pitching with one hand tied behind his back.
JI - June 3, 2008
And the one we should have picked up
Is throwing a 123 ERA+ on his 1 year minor league contract for Boston.
I hate when other front offices are better than ours. Especially when their fans are so worthless.
thejew4u - June 3, 2008
I want no part of Sabathia
I’m insanely in favor of trying to get Sheets on a contract similar to Schmidt. 3 years, high AAV.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
yes yes yes
JI - June 3, 2008
Of course the current administration probably won't go for this
and would go after CC and his Cy Young and history of durability and whooping our ass in the playoffs—which I why I mentioned it.
JI - June 3, 2008
The Indians whopped our ass in that game not him
Robert - June 3, 2008
Correct
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
YOUR ARM ASPLODE
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
Because of his workload, or because of the expected size of the contract?
Or both, I suppose?
Sheets scares the hell out of me, too.
Teej - June 3, 2008
because of everything.
His size, his workload, the contract he’ll get.
I’d rather have Sabathia for sure contract being equal, but they won’t and I’m terrified of long term commitments to pitchers and I just think it’s more likely you could nab Sheets on a shorter term deal.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
Shouldn't it be Wlad in RF with the lefty on the mound for LAA?
Another:
Twins/Orioles: O’s spect Radhames Liz gets the call-up for this start versus Twins rookie Kevin Slowey. Slowey’s got the Radke thing going, meaning he’s ten times better than Silva and gets paid nothing. Liz is a strikeout pitcher with control problems, though not Cabrera-size control problems.
Tigers/A’s: Dontrelle Willis is back from injury. He’s got a winning smile, but is he any good at all at pitching? He’s signed for a few more years; this could get ugly. On the other end of things, Olympia’s Dana Eveland continues his surprising season – another freely available player putting up a great season contrasts so well with our rotatio….you know, I can’t be bothered to insult this team any more.
marc w - June 3, 2008
I already had the As/Tigers game in there.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
Yeah? Well fuck you then!
Sorry – missed that one.
marc w - June 3, 2008
Be ready to fight for your five free days
Back when MLBTV had a three-day free trial I ended up paying for a full month of service even though I sent two request-for-cancellation emails and made a phone call to customer service within the three days. Over the next week I spent about 45 minutes trying to prove to them that I had tried to cancel the account, and then I realized that I was quickly reaching the point where getting my $14.95 back was no longer worth the effort.
Lots of people think MLBTV is pretty solid though, so I’m sure my situation wasn’t the norm or anything. It’s just a good idea to be hyper-vigilant about these free trial things.
Manzanillos Cup - June 3, 2008
I hate anything that's auto-renewal like MLB.tv is. Unfortunately, that's the norm.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
I was really ignorant going into mlbtv, anyway
I live in Idaho and thought I would be able to watch M’s games on the internet – wrong. To watch the M’s I have to sign up for 119 extra channels of TV that I won’t watch for $40 a month.
I hope someday somebody decides that offering on-demand local sports programming is worth a try.
Manzanillos Cup - June 3, 2008
That Jays-Yankees game is also a chance to watch Halladay pitch.
Halladay already has 5 complete games this season. He’s averaging 8 innings per start. His Ks are back. He’s a joy to watch.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
that seems like poor planning
Joba really does not stand a chance.
InSpokane - June 3, 2008
It's not like he'd have much of a shot at a win anyway; he's on a pitch count of something like 75.
At least this way he’ll be facing a below-average offense.
Teej - June 3, 2008
It's a below-average offense that's second in the AL in pitches/plate appearance.
They’ll make him work. He won’t see the fifth inning.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
And yet
he’s 6-5. Further proof that W-L is garbage.
bluemax - June 3, 2008
Three of those losses are complete game losses.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
the new ads suck
InSpokane - June 3, 2008

ralphie81 - June 3, 2008
Completely off topic
but fuck Jeter, Giambi was safe.
JI - June 3, 2008
yes he was
so I don’t have a job anymore and this place it kind of boring today
InSpokane - June 3, 2008
If Giambi gets his fat ass down and slides, it's not even an issue.
I blame Giambi for making it a close call.
Thingray - June 3, 2008
I blame the umpire for being stupid.
JI - June 3, 2008
If I give you the video
Can you make a gif out of Guillens illegal bunt from 2000?
Robert - June 3, 2008
one way or another
yes
JI - June 3, 2008
Joba just hit 99 in the first inning
buh
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
Hopefully he's just too dumb to understand pacing.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
Well he walked the first guy on eight pitches like an idiot
so I hope you’re right.
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
Rays up 1-0.
BoSox are playing Crisp in CF and Ellsbury in LF. I would have done it the other way around I think.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
I don't know that you can really go wrong with either
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
If his mlbtv commercial is any indication
Crisp is a ball full of energy.
JI - June 3, 2008
Again, the Jays are second in the AL in P/PA.
They’re a lousy team to have Joba face, especially with Halladay pitching.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Velocity's all over the map. 94, 96, 99
I’d call that not knowing how to pace yourself
Matthew - June 3, 2008
This start will give us infinity times more comparison data points for Morrow than we had yesterday
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
NERRRRRRDDDSSSSS

Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Between 93-99 so far
either he throws two different fastballs or he’s not completely sure what he’s doing quite yet.
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
And that 75 pitch limit is approaching a lot faster than the Yankees would like.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
What is he at now?
Thingray - June 3, 2008
Over 35, and he's not out of the first
OlSalty - June 3, 2008
38 after 1 inning
ack - June 3, 2008
38 pitches after one inning.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
HA HA!

Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Good fucking Jesus the Nationals are terrible.
JI - June 3, 2008
Not news.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Their lineup is worse than ours.
I call that news.
JI - June 3, 2008
Joba balk!
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Joba's only lasting 3 innings at this rate
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
If he's lucky.
Overbay’s incredibly annoying of late. Fouls off puitches like mad.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Do the Yankees have anyone up yet?
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
They're warming someone up now
OlSalty - June 3, 2008
He won't make it out the 2nd at this rate
If they hold him to his pitch count
OlSalty - June 3, 2008
He does get Wilkerson and Eckstein back to back.
That should help him.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
That's not saying much.
Thingray - June 3, 2008
I can't believe that JP Riccardi is that stupid.
JI - June 3, 2008
They'll lead off the second inning.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
That Wilkerson is washed up. Only a retarded team with a bunch of idiots in the FO would sign him
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
I'm talking about Eckstein.
JI - June 3, 2008
And yes,
I’m still reeling from the Scott Rolen breakup even though I know he’s not much of a hitter anymore.
JI - June 3, 2008
except for the part where both Wilkerson and Eckstein take quite a few pitches on average.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
I can't think of a reason not to throw Eckstien a strike
so I’m going to assume he leads all time in pitches fouled off.
JI - June 3, 2008
Why would you throw him a strike?
He’d get grit all over the ball
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Pretty much.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
He's really annoying to watch if you're not going to the playoffs.
JI - June 3, 2008
AL avg: 17.4% of pitches result in a foul ball
Eckstein: 21.3%
Matthew - June 3, 2008
Yikes
If I were a pitcher I would just throw him a meat pitch everytime
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Singles still hurt.
JI - June 3, 2008
A 1 pitch single might be better than a 9 pitch out.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Of course I would theorize that Eckstein gives more runs away witht the glove
than he creates on offense. Sweet Jesus he is a horrible fielder.
JI - June 3, 2008
I would just like to congratulate Nate Robertson for serviing up Eckstein's only HR of the year so far

JI - June 3, 2008
They should be above this.
JI - June 3, 2008
The Jays need John McDonald back.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
McDonald's one of the best fielders I've ever seen
and yet Eckstein’s 2008 is, according to THT, better than any season McDonald’s had in Toronto.
Can’t trust a player-specific metric, etc., small sample, etc.
But Eckstein simply can’t be terrible given the jays +/- and how well that correlates with his RZR.
marc w - June 3, 2008
The fielding metrics disagree with you
I agree, he looks bad out there. But look at a four-year average in RZR… there’s no way he’s straight-up horrible.
marc w - June 3, 2008
He can't throw
and I’m assuming he plays back even further because of the turf.
JI - June 3, 2008
And yet...
check out his fielding stats and then check out Yuni’s.
On second thought, don’t. I’m just mad now.
Can you make a gif to the effect of ‘pwned by Eckstein’?
marc w - June 3, 2008
How was he last year?
Because to the naked eye he was the Raul of SS last year.
JI - June 3, 2008
To be fair, he was poor in 2007
But good in 2006 and 2005.
marc w - June 3, 2008
His throwing has really regressed the last few years
which is probably why his errors are through the roof.
JI - June 3, 2008
Word
I can’t recall a fielder who has regressed as much as Eckstein over a 2-3 year period
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
I would say you should just bean him
but why give him the free base?
seattlebruin - June 3, 2008
Because he likes it.

Dude fouls off tons of pitches, partly because he hacks at everything.
Matthew - June 3, 2008
I'm surprised there aren't more Mariners on that list
Given how few pitches we take, guess we just put them into play really shittily?
OlSalty - June 3, 2008

Wilkerson has the right idea.
If you’re going to make a weak out, make the pitcher throw 6 pitches to get it.
Llewdor - June 3, 2008
Or you could not make a weak out
and make the pitcher throw six pitches anyway
seattlebruin - June 3, 2008
That assumes Wilkerson has any ability to avoid making weak outs.

So that's Joba's first inning.

Someone who couldn't stick with the Giants

Ouch.
Lights out at SWB, though…
marc w - June 3, 2008
Isn't that Jack Donaghy's boss?
Mariner John - June 3, 2008

dbroncos31 - June 3, 2008
So is this how it's gonna be today?
All of us watching games that aren’t the Mariners?
Goose - June 3, 2008
In a game of Would You Rather with the Nationals lineup:
C Flores/Kenji-> Yes (only to get out of the contract)
1B Young/Sexson-> Yes (not only for the hilarity)
2B Lopez-/Lopez-> No.
3B Boone/Beltre-> God No.
SS Guzman/Yuni-> No (but it’s close)
LF Langerhans/Raul-> No
CF Milledge/Ichiro->No

Llewdor - June 3, 2008
So to recap
it was stupid to start a game in the middle of a downpour. Rays—-> on.
JI - June 3, 2008
Woohoo
Dan Giese, one of my favorite minor league journeyman
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
Bahahahaa
86 mph fastball from Giese says Gameday
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Also an 86 mph changeup
Interesting strategy
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
He doesn't load his arm very well
but he does have decent deception in his delivery
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
Weren't the Brewers supposed to be on the verge of breaking out a few years ago?
Goose - June 3, 2008
Turns out they couldn't catch the clap from from Kid Rock if they trtied.
JI - June 3, 2008
The BoSox announcers are terrible.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
"Franconer's gonna head out and talk to Matsuzaker."
Teej - June 3, 2008
I actually rather like them
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
They have ugly accents.
JI - June 3, 2008
Running two MLBtv games at the same time taxes my internet...
JI - June 3, 2008
My FIOS is fine.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
It's fine when I switch one game to 400k.
JI - June 3, 2008
That's a shame.
Running two games at 1.2M just fine.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
1.2M is a myth.
JI - June 3, 2008
What, the stream or people who can run said stream?
BrianL - June 3, 2008
It's the same picture just more choppy
even on computers that are superior to mine.
JI - June 3, 2008
Agreed. It's pointless.
Teej - June 3, 2008
It's looking pretty damn good on my machine.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
1.2 kills my MBP
:( It also lags way behind game day.
bluemax - June 3, 2008
I can't believe they don't show an endless loop of commercials during rain delays.
JI - June 3, 2008
I can't believe you don't switch the game off
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
How am I supposed to know when it's back?
It’s a pain in the ass to reload games because the flash doesn’t fucking work.
Also, fuck you Drew, you handsome bastard.

HEY THIS IS PHIL HUGHES
OlSalty - June 3, 2008

BrianL - June 3, 2008

Goose - June 3, 2008
As it should be.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
SWING AND A MISS!
SUCK IT CLEMENS!
Goose - June 3, 2008

ThundaPC - June 3, 2008
Okay Jeff, you win.
These Nissan live sets commercials suck.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
Was I ever losing?
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
The vitor artinez gag
had a negative reaction among most test audiences.
JI - June 3, 2008
It's taken you this long to notice?
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
I only had a five-day trial to MLB.TV for the DRaysBay invasion.
I just bought a month subscription and have just now been exposed to this advertising disaster.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
I hope he gets 300.
JI - June 3, 2008
1041 to go
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
By the way, Joba's average fastball was down 2mph
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
So Morow would only throw 94-96?
Drag.
JI - June 3, 2008
this thing does not do double letters well
JI - June 3, 2008
I enjoyed watching this start
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
Side-arming starters kick ass
too bad he’s one of the Red Sox, he’s probably destined for the pen though
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
That was fucking retarded.
Goose - June 3, 2008
Ortiz only out for 2-3 weeks.
Bummer.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
Is that actually official?
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
I did read it on the internet
so I’d say yes
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 3, 2008
Well, as official as a broadcast team statement can get.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
So I finally pay attention to a Campillo start
and all I get is 2007-vintage Jorge.. 4IP, 4R, 3k (that’s interesting), 1BB, 2HR, both to Uggla (that guy’s a beast).
Welcome to regression!
marc w - June 3, 2008
About damn time too
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
I'm still confused about how Uggla is so good
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
Sometimes these things just happen...
JI - June 3, 2008
WTF? MLB.tv just cut to commercial in the middle of an AB
Goose - June 3, 2008

Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
Tuck turner, .416, 1894.
To be fair the enitre Phillies OF hit .400 that year.
JI - June 3, 2008

Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
Fuck you again, Drew.
BrianL - June 3, 2008
J.D. Drew is an asshole.
Teej - June 3, 2008
Does all of Boston still hate him?
JI - June 3, 2008
I don't know, probably.
He’s last in the majors in RBIs Remembered.
Teej - June 3, 2008
I thought that was Beltre.

JI - June 3, 2008
Michael Kay says he can't figure out why the M's cut Brad Wilkerson.
Happybelly - June 3, 2008
I'm still trying to figure out why we cut Greg Norton.
ThundaPC - June 3, 2008
Apparently the word sucking is not in his vocab
dbroncos31 - June 3, 2008
If it's because they kept three guys who suck worse
I agree.
JI - June 3, 2008
No, it was more like a last place team cut him and a contending team put him in the starting lineup.
Happybelly - June 3, 2008
Well that's retarded.
JI - June 3, 2008
The jewel of the Miguel Cabrera trade
ladies and gentleman, Mr. Burke Badenhop!!!!!!!!
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
Josh Hamilton is good
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
That trade was bad.
JI - June 3, 2008
Edinson Volquez
1.46 ERA in 68 innings 83 K’s, not too bad for the Reds
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
He's not nearly that good.
JI - June 3, 2008
No he's not Bob Gibson
but he’s still pretty spiffy
Trenchtown - June 3, 2008
it feels like he should have more than 17 home runs
MFAN - June 3, 2008
Yes, he does seem to hit a home run every day
Jeff Sullivan - June 3, 2008
Indeed.
ThundaPC - June 3, 2008
Except at fielding
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
There's always LF.
JI - June 3, 2008
You still need to be able to run in straight lines to play LF
Graham MacAree - June 3, 2008
all lines are straight

except the crooked ones
