I said last night that posting would return to normal today, but, Jesus, what the heck am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to make people interested in this? This game was the season. I don't mean it like all of our hopes rested on the final outcome and that the loss doomed our chances of competing; those were shot weeks ago. I mean it like this game was the first two months of our season condensed and wrapped up in a neat little package with a gray tattered bow and a tag that reads "TO: HUGE IDIOT" and a scratch-n-sniff sticker that smells like old cheese for some reason. As nutshells go, this one was pretty complete.
OFFENSE: for seven innings they let the decent but wildly overachieving Joe Saunders do whatever the hell he wanted. He entered with one of the lowest strikeout rates in baseball, but six of the 30 Mariners that faced him went down on strikes, while only one drew a walk. All of three balls were hit hard - Lopez's home run and Betancourt's two doubles down the line. The rest were either weak grounders, routine fly balls, or bloopers that dropped in front of the outfield. Only one run was legitimately produced, as the other three were the direct result of a pair of fifth-inning errors. They didn't look particularly interested in making Arredondo or Rodriguez work for their outs later on. This was the very same offense to which we've become accustomed. Our lineup today, by the way, featured zero hitters with an OPS over .780 and four hitters with an OPS under .700. Miguel Cairo pinch-hit in the ninth.
PITCHING: Advertised as the bonafide ace this team was missing a year ago, Erik Bedard walked out to the mound and didn't do anything at all. While he wasn't as bad as the line in the box score would indicate, he still couldn't even make it out of the fourth against a weak lineup. His command was off and once again he couldn't miss bats with the regularity we were expecting upon the time of the trade. In other words, Bedard was somewhat okay but still a massive disappointment, and the strong relief effort we got from RA Dickey came just a little too late to make a difference.
DEFENSE: Adrian Beltre bobbled a grounder on the first play of the game, allowing Reggie Willits to reach first base. Willits would later score on a double. In the second, with the bases loaded and two down, Maicer Izturis rolled a grounder directly underneath the glove of Jose Lopez, plating another pair. In the fourth, with men on second and third and one down, Wladimir Balentien dove for and missed an Izturis blooper despite playing him shallow, letting another Angel cross the plate.
-----
Bad, undisciplined hitting. Disappointing pitching from a big investment, juxtaposed with a solid performance from someone making close to the minimum. Bad defense that cost us runs. We didn't just watch this game - we're living it. Every day.
Only 103 left to go.

You know what's really sad?
I’ll miss this crap in December.
Aaron Campeau - June 4, 2008
Amen. :(
BrettJMiller - June 4, 2008
Only Monday-Saturday, though.
Aaron Campeau - June 4, 2008
Thank god for the Seahawks
LeRoy Hill threw out the first pitch today. I thought immediately “Hey this is a bad idea, I’m already thinking about how much more awesome the Seahawks are than the Mariners.” Probably not a good way to keep fans interested, introducing them to a member of a good local sports team.
BrettJMiller - June 4, 2008
Watching Ruskell operate is almost frustrating.
Even though I love the Seahawks, my first allegiance will always lie with the Mariners. So every time the organization does something awesome, 98% of me is excited and 2% of me is saying “Fuck, why can’t the Mariners be smart like this!”
Aaron Campeau - June 4, 2008
I know this feeling well.
Thanks a lot, Tim.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
I appreciate the decent write ups despite the non-decent playing by the Mariners
but they’re inching closer to Strasburg alright.
Fin - June 4, 2008
Lack of Plate discipline
is probably the most aggravating thing to watch next to the awful defense. I stopped being angry last month, and am just laughing at them now. I am still angry however at the shameless front office unwilling to admit defeat.
Its over. Please do something about it.
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
Like a trainwreck
I’m horrified and yet can’t look away…
Omerta - June 4, 2008
Irrelevant
I just skimmed through 240+ comments of the aftermath of the Angels win over at the blog that shall not be named and nary a mention of the Seattle Mariners. Only detailed discussion on who deserved panther.
I miss being hated.
Omerta - June 4, 2008
Its not much of a rivalry anymore now that the M's stink.
Fin - June 4, 2008
Kinda like the DBacks/Rockies rivalry that was supposed to be in full bloom this year.
Except it hasn’t happened because the Rockies turned out to be a fluke and the DBacks have completed destroyed them(8-1, out scored them 63-25).
Goose - June 4, 2008
That right there might be the saddest part of this season.
Goose - June 4, 2008
Why would you do that to yourself.
JI - June 4, 2008
gameday glitch
Did anyone get a screenshot of the “automatic strike”/”automatic out” Gameday glitch during Cairo’s AB? Damn, I should have taken that.
appleshampoo - June 4, 2008
Look at the chart.
Goose - June 4, 2008
Yes, and the 3rd game thread
Me FTL
appleshampoo - June 4, 2008
it's the rum talking
appleshampoo - June 4, 2008
Go Dickey! ... he was effective.
mark sobba - June 4, 2008
/perks up
Huh? What?
The Typical Idiot Fan - June 4, 2008
Man, dickey is awesome.
PhilKenSebben - June 4, 2008
DUMP Sexson already!!!
He’s not evil but he’s like a negative force field sucking all life out of this team.
Also get rid of that evil cancer Washburn ASP and replace him with Dickey in the rotation.
(Vidro, Cairo, etc. are the lesser ills, and it’s no use complaining about them since they are unlikely to get sacked soon by this management. First make the two huge and demoralizing problems disappear!!)
Sam Regens - June 4, 2008
I'm pretty sure Sexson isn't entirely responsible for Epic Suckfest 2008
The dude isn’t Bastila with Battle Meditation or anything.
Frosty Raptor - June 4, 2008
NERD ALERT!
I applaud you. I need more KotOR.
Llewdor - June 4, 2008
So what you two are saying is
That Bedard is actually Darth Spezio, found unconscious and without his memory by the front office, who gave him a false history with the Orioles and retrained him to be a good player… and he chose the evil ending?
Jordan of Boise - June 4, 2008
Of course he chose the evil ending.
Those Jedi fucked him up. They totally deserved it.
Llewdor - June 4, 2008
...Wow.
Props man, that was an awesome nerd reference.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
On a positive note, Zito fell to 1-9 last night
Alex B - June 4, 2008
Needs more Dickey, still.
I can still get excited for certain players and certain aspects of our season. Watching Wash and Tits stink it up to the point where Dickey gets a legit shot at starting will be fun. He was awesome last night. And even when he’s not as awesome, he’s way more fun to watch than .
Felix/Bedard/Silva/Morrow/Dickey for the second half of ‘08
tits bullpen, washburn dfa
I can always hope.
AtomicGarden - June 4, 2008
Err, can't do fake html codes I see.
That end of the first paragraph should have read: he’s way more fun to watch than “insert #3/4/5 pitcher’s name here”.
AtomicGarden - June 4, 2008
I've watched one game
in two weeks, and I haven’t even cared that I’ve missed so many games, or wondered if they won…...
I’ve made it my goal for the rest of the year to not watch a single Mariner game, do absolutely nothing that can support this club. Even though I can’t be counted in the ratings because I work for a tv station, I won’t watch, I won’t buy any Mariner stuff, and when I’m down Seattle way I definitely won’t go to a game. My support for them (financially speaking) for this year is over.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
I know something you can support
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
actually
I’m supporting alaska fish and game. I haven’t gotten back in to hockey since the strike.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
Deadliest Catch?
BrianL - June 4, 2008
only when I buy King Crap
mostly I’m supporting it thru fishing for salmon
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
that was a heck of a typo.
King Crab….. not king Crap…. sheeeesh.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
I didn't realize crap had a market value.
I’ve been flushing the damn things for years.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
Its Alaska
everything has market value.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
I'm going to start shipping my crap north on barges then.
Why not make a few bucks for my daily efforts?
Thingray - June 4, 2008
I thought you seemed unusually quiet when the Senators died
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
yeah.... I took pity on you
I knew you were still into hockey.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
I would support the memorial cup, but it broke in half.
JI - June 4, 2008
This only lasts a few more days.
You need to come up with something better…. soon.
Wilder. - June 4, 2008
The promise of next year's Stanley Cup
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
Jeff will soon be supporting
Tennis, Golf, and Nascar.
MfaninAlaska - June 4, 2008
On occasion I do enjoy watching golf
I think at some point I went straight from 15 to 50.
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
whhheeee
JI - June 4, 2008
What cracks me up there is Raul lunges for the bag about a full step before he's even there.
And the 1st baseman is right in front of him, and obviously off the bag. Weird.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
I don't know about the rest of the readers,
But now that the M’s suck I come back here almost solely for the writeups. I appreciate the good work Jeff!
brayden04 - June 4, 2008
This is too good to pass up
Per Dave Cameron (USSM)
Throw in Baker’s column where he (in jest) points out that the M’s could start a 100/100 club and it’s looking like this:
Payroll: $117,666,482
Record: Possibly +100 losses.
Talk about “Ultimate Fail”...
ThundaPC - June 4, 2008
I've noticed that lately Baker's pessimism seems to be surpassing our own.
Our little blogger’s all grown up now.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
How much longer until we're officially the Orioles?
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
That happened when we traded for Erik Bedard.
Wilder. - June 4, 2008
So when do we get to trade for Adam Jones?
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
LATE?
Although even if mine was first, I’m still going to look like an idiot when this subthread pushes my comment down the page :(
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Ding ding ding
Alex B - June 4, 2008
I don't know, when do we get Adam Jones back?
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Ownership needs more batshit insane
pdb - June 4, 2008
Like declaring that if the Game Cube is a failure Nintendo will stop manufacturing consoles?
Frosty Raptor - June 4, 2008
I rather liked the Game Cube.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
Brain Cube?
“When you are ready for the answers, put out this flaming bag”
Thingray - June 4, 2008
The Gamecube was a failure
they’re just too batshit insane too admit it.
bluemax - June 4, 2008
For the life of me, I'll never understand how GameCube sucked so hardcore
after N64 was so ridiculously awesome.
Oh well, they made up for it with Wii
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Yeah, but the Wii is going to give me carpal tunnel, I swear it is.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
I thought the Game Cube had a few great titles
But outside of those, it’s pretty barren.
Frosty Raptor - June 4, 2008
You could say that about a lot of systems, though
like say, the first Xbox
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Rogue Squadron II was amazing
Graham MacAree - June 4, 2008
GameCube "sucked" because the N64 ran off all the 3rd parties developers.
N64 was great, but it’s kind of the reason that the Cube wasn’t. Cube had some quality Nintendo games but having inferior versions of multi-platform games was a turn-off.
ThundaPC - June 4, 2008
I love the Wii because of the innovation of the Wii-mote/Nunchuck
but it seems like they’re going to have the same problem again where the Nintendo games (the Mario RPGs, Kart, SSB, Mario Party, etc.) are very good, but everything else kind of sucks. We’ve already seen that football and basketball games are really hard on the system, and most people who are playing Madden/NCAA/Live are getting Xboxes and PS3s
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Yea, which is a shame considering how well the system is selling.
ThundaPC - June 4, 2008
I already tried one "action" game on my Wii (Destroy All Humans)
and it was so hard to play that I doubt I’ll buy anymore games like that for this system. Mario stuff, Wii sports, Sims Castaway, and that kind of stuff is fine, but anything that requires precise movements is extremely difficult, especially in bright lighting conditions (which seem to make the sensor less effective).
Thingray - June 4, 2008
Play Resident Evil 4.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - June 4, 2008
As in "play this on Wii, it's not too hard", or "play this on Wii, it's freaking impossible!!"?
Thingray - June 4, 2008
Actually...
I’ve heard RE4 (Wii) is the ultimate version of RE and it’s worth playing on Wii even if you’ve completed the game on a different system.
planB - June 4, 2008
Yes.
Resident Evil 4 on the Wii is one of the best games I have EVER played.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - June 4, 2008
Hmm... Never played any of the earlier RE's, but maybe I'll have to check this one out.
I need to beat Sims Castaway with my GF first though, she’s hooked on that game (and I’ll admit it’s pretty fun).
Thingray - June 4, 2008
MLB Power Pros is a solid baseball game
planB - June 4, 2008
But it's not going to convince someone to buy a Wii
like a Madden or an NCAA or Live might get someone to buy a PS3/Xbox360
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Ah, yeah
I see that I missed your point. Still, if you already have one… :)
planB - June 4, 2008
Ours is a different kind of stupid
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
And the number one draft pick of the 2009 draft is
Stephen Strasburg, Seattle Mariners
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
So are Reed or Wlad gonna be useful at all this year?
Wlad’s defense has really bothered me because I thought that he’d at least give us some help there if his bat struggled some.
Edgar for Pres - June 4, 2008
I think Reed is already useful.
Everytime he starts in LF instead of Raul.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
Reed is useful when he plays the field
Wlad…well let’s just write this off as a necessary adjustment.
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
Apathy and excuses
The Mariner way
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 4, 2008
I'm really surprised how poorly he's played on defense.
I really thought he’d be better than this. No Gold Glove or anything mind you, but better. He just seems to look lost out there sometimes. I know he has adjustments to make to new parks, but fly balls are fly balls.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
It's called Raul-itis, and it's affecting the whole clubhouse
Yuni and Wlad have caught it, too.
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
Yuni has had it for a while now.
I thought Wlad was far enough away in RF to keep from catching it, but apparently not. You’d think Ichiro would act as some kind of buffer or vaccine though.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
Ichiro is too busy off drinking beer from Papa New Guinea and booing the team
to be bothered with finding a cure for Raul-itis
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
And calling his teammates fat.
Teej - June 4, 2008
And punching himself in the face for saying he'd like to play in Cleveland
Gomez - June 4, 2008
AND HURTING THE TEAM BY NOT DIVING FOR FLYBALLS
seattlebruin - June 4, 2008
With Ichiro's powers, he's never too busy.
He just might not be interested.
Thingray - June 4, 2008
