Chuck Armstrong rips into the coaching staff. Bill Bavasi rips into the players. John McLaren rips into the players. Carlos Silva rips into the players for some reason. Every single person affiliated with the Mariners right now is completely and utterly pissed off. Which is great, because you know who makes really good decisions? Angry people. I've never felt safer.
Every day I think to myself "there's no way this is the worst team in baseball," and every day they try to change my mind. To hell with chemistry and accountability. The players are bad. And when the players are bad, the team is bad. What if they are the worst team in baseball? The only reason we think they aren't is because we expected so much more out of them before the year, but now that we know that even our most pessimistic preseason projections were way off, who's to say we've hit rock bottom? How do we know things won't continue to get progressively worse? You can say this team has too much talent to lose 100 games, and I'd still be inclined to agree with you, but at some point, should the tailspin continue, we may have to consider that, yeah, they really are this bad. Would that be such a leap of faith? God knows all that talent we allegedly have isn't showing up anywhere on the stat sheet. This appears to be a perfect storm of player decline and career collapse, a storm for which the good ship Mariner was never prepared. Grab a bucket or dive off the bow. There's no easy way out of this.

If I were working for the Mariners right now, you better believe that I'd leave that off my resume. Short of pining for the return of the Negro Leagues or whipping it out on the desk in an interview, I can't imagine there's a quicker way to kill your career.
More interesting, non-this-game-related post on the way.

If we're gonna lose
we might as well shoot for 39-123.
JI - June 4, 2008
At least then the argument could be made that
we’re the only team in the AL that’s not on HGH.
qrsouther - June 4, 2008
Except we are and we still suck balls
OlSalty - June 4, 2008
This has been an amazing season.
Goose - June 4, 2008
Shouldn't Loaf have more +%?
Am I missing some wrongdoing of his today?
qrsouther - June 4, 2008
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
Well I got here in the 7th inning
And the general consensus was that he was what was keeping us in it today, so I wanted to know.
qrsouther - June 4, 2008
Hang in there, Dave.
We still love you.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
God bless him for pimping out the Dicktator.
JI - June 4, 2008
Agreed.
This team needs more Dickey every five days.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
Gomez - June 4, 2008
He's a knuckleballer!
4 days of Dickey, 1 of Felix. Rinse and repeat.
joof - June 5, 2008
I can go for that.
BrianL - June 5, 2008
20% is pretty significant
for a team destined to lose after the top of the first

Poor Ichi
Happy Silva
Paytheline - June 4, 2008
My favorite is how Silva stuck us with the "Suite on the road" clause
Damn you Silva… you couldn’t just let us get away with only 7 digits a year, could you? you had to make us put you in a suite while we did it…
oh the humanity.
good thing our front office has shown an extreme resilience to the effects of all known forms of humiliation.
Boydo - June 4, 2008
Eight digits...
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
Since im not believing team chemistry, im giving free passes.
Morrow and Lopez, you can watch any comedy you want. Felix, you can also…just for being you.
The rest = trade for the top 50 prospects in baseball. Then let the teams who have those top 50 prospects divy up who they want.
Slica - June 4, 2008
The whole sitting-them-in-front-of-their-lockers thing is silly
Sending the players on time out? Really? That’s the answer?
This team doesn’t need a fire lit under its butts. It needs new butts.
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
That Bavasi making other people
be held accountable for his failures. I think its funny because he is bashing the players, but he put this team together. Good Stuff.
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
I wonder if he pulled any of this kinda shit in Anaheim.
Slica - June 4, 2008
I'm not sure if his ass was ever on the line in Anaheim like it is now.
BrianL - June 4, 2008
I think he resigned there over a disagreement with the higher ups.
JI - June 4, 2008
Hmmm and look where the Angels are now.
Whoot!
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
The teams he put together got more or less the same results they've had
in Seattle, so I’d say yes.

thank god
This prompted me to google “younger more talented butts” – no results. Dodged an internet bullet.
Eyebrows - June 4, 2008
clearly you didn't try google image search

I searched in quotes.
I’m know that I’d get results without strict phrase searching.

If that hapened when I was at work
I’d probably walk out or get in a shouting match or something else that’s mildly dramatic. What a bunch of bullshit. Bavasi, think what you will of his GM skills seemed like a pretty cool dude, now that the team is crumbling he’s looking like a giant douche. That responsibility for assembling a crap team or shut your fucking mouth.
JI - June 4, 2008
*Take
JI - June 4, 2008
I know several people jokingly say this, but...
I firmly believe we will have to wait until Armstrong and Lincoln either retire, or die for this to change.
It seems like they rely on striking gold to carry the team. They’re clueless when we dont have an ARod/Griffey/Johnson carrying the team. Ichiro is a superstar, but he never really carried the team…he was more of the table setter.
And its impossible to see everyone having career years at the same time (2001) when you have a roster full of older players.
Slica - June 4, 2008
Ichiro carried the team last year.
JI - June 4, 2008
Dunno if I agree with that
Our bullpen was awesome aside from the poor usage of it…and our offense was a little better than it is right now…
Slica - June 4, 2008
Awesome > Rick White + Chris Reitsma + John Parrish

Wooo here's a gem from Bavasi (thanks Seattle-PI)
BrianL - June 4, 2008
See it's comments like these
That make me want to like Bavasi.. but I guess actions speak louder than words is resonating pretty loudly right now
seattlesundevil - June 4, 2008
I dunno. This quote makes him sound like he's the owner of the team and is the sole decider of who gets to stay or leave
Completely leaving himself out of potential firings
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 4, 2008
He is a confusing man.
I mean, he just saud before the game everyone was safe.
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
Well, huh....
If Bavasi thinks that his current personnel can turn a team that’s last in the Majors to a playoff contending team why would he want to fire them?
ThundaPC - June 4, 2008
None of the talk means anything
We need to see some action and personnel moves.
Gomez - June 4, 2008
Amen
Edgar for Mayor - June 4, 2008
Please keep the hatred to a minimum
I’m heading to Seattle to catch the last series of the season between the Angels and M’s, any advice on where the best seats are ? Hows the stadium food, parking etc. I figured if any body knew Safeco in and out it would be the fans. P.S. for the good of your city , franchise, self-esteem and mental health DUMP BAVASI NOW!!!! ( Die hard Angel fan that despises Bavasi)
halofolife - June 4, 2008
What's your budget?
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
No hatred here. We're too indifferent to care anymore.
I’ve only been to Safeco a few times, but the food has been quite good in my few experiences. (Go for the Ivar’s. Or the garlic fries, I suppose.) Parking’s definitely more of a bitch than in Anaheim since there’s no big lot around the park. Others here may know better tricks, but I just drive until I find a lot because I’m easily irritated by traffic and just want to get the hell out and go to the game.
Enjoy the park. It’s a good one.
Teej - June 4, 2008
Garlic Fries are a must buy at any Mariners game
If you are old enough, try a pint of Mac and Jack’s, you won’t regret it.
But Bill Bavasi I think has ruined all of those aspects for us. Hopefully our team one day bounces back like yours has.
Fin - June 4, 2008
I second this
Can’t have a game at Safeco without the garlic fries. Used to be that if you needed to taunt fans of the opposing team (or in your case, Mariner’s fans) they helped with the intimidation factor. Now they are simply a way to console ourselves.
And Mac & Jacks is only sold on tap (unless that’s changed) so you can’t get it anywhere south of Portland. Sigh.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 5, 2008
I made this for a Seahawks game but it should work the Mariners too

Robert - June 5, 2008
I used to park on Stacy between 6th and airport way
that was free and always deserted.
Matthew - June 5, 2008
The free spots under Alaskan Way go really fast
so I wouldn’t even bother looking there or on 1st ave, 6th/Stacy is pretty reliably available.
pdb - June 5, 2008
That was my go to spot till my car got broken into
Now I park way down 1st ave.
Robert - June 5, 2008
Well
A couple of hundred, works for me at the Big A, so I thought maybe double that for me and my two kids. I hope and pray you guys are better behaved than those idiots up in choakland, god that stadium is UGLY, as are the average fans personalities. The game is Monday the 22nd of September, how’s the weather generally speaking that time of year? ( bear in mind I’m from Socal, so mid fifties is cold to me) Thanks.

Teej, thanks for the info, buenos noches from Socal.....
Go Lakers, dump Bavasi!!!!
halofolife - June 4, 2008
I live in SoCal, too, actually.
But sure, Go Lakers!
And yeah, as Jeff said, don’t worry about the fans. They probably won’t even notice you.
Teej - June 4, 2008
Don't join them...
God, I hate the Lakers. I’ve heard about the damn Lakers every day straight since pretty much my 18th birthday :(
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
The fans won't bother you
Safeco is tame, especially that late in the year for a team that sucks.
Both the food and the beer are rather excellent, provided you’re not intimidated by higher prices (if so, there are a bunch of vendors outside selling stuff off the grill for less). Don’t know about the weather, since I also live in SoCal, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be fine as long as you bring a jacket or sweater just in case. As for parking, if you’re willing to walk a little bit you can park for free along the curb a few blocks south of the stadium.
Jeff Sullivan - June 4, 2008
The New Big A looks nice on TV.
JI - June 4, 2008
TV doesn't show all those filthy rats.
Teej - June 4, 2008
Am I missing something?
JI - June 4, 2008
I suppose so.
Link.
Teej - June 5, 2008
View reserved (Safeco's upper deck) really aren't bad at all. $18-20 a head
You’ll want to get them on the 3B side to keep the sun off you, though.
Gomez - June 4, 2008
I tend to sit between 327 and 333.
It’s $22 for a view box ($16 for regular seats, and I find it to be worth the extra money) and the view is good. As far as I’m concerned, the only bad seats are the LF and CF bleachers. It just comes down to how much you want to spend and what vantage point you like the best. The M’s website has pictures of the view from each section on the Safeco Field page.
Depending on where you’re staying, I’d suggest taking a bus/walking to the game. Parking is lame and expensive, and the buses to and from Safeco, though crowded, are plentiful and not as unpleasant as most Metro buses. Concessions are expensive but awesome.
As far as the weather, late September is usually still pleasant, but it’s unpredictable. It’s best to prepare for rain, no matter what it looks like outside when you leave for the ballpark. It can also get real cold real fast that time of year, and since Safeco is near the water, the wind can make things downright unpleasant is you’re not prepared.
Aaron Campeau - June 4, 2008
Like I said
Thanks for the info, looking forward to the experience. I’ve been to Chavez Ravine, Petco, the BOB, and that dump in norcal (more tarps than paying fans) and of course the Big A. Next up Safeco. Six down, a lot more baseball stadiums to go. Leave our rats alone, you don’t f%#k with them, they won’t f*^k with you.

We are bad at baseball

I concur with your ineptitude....
But thank you everyone for the info once again. If you guys (and gals) are ever in the I.E. (Socal) I hope I can help you out (where to buy good crack, which hoods to avoid, good restaurants). BTW, PhilkenSebben, MacAfee IS THAT BAD.
halofolife - June 5, 2008
Alternative to bailing out or jumping ship
Grab a beer and enjoy the downward spiral. Most of us have been on this ship so long we can’t imagine leaving for better waters. We might as well keep laughing at the ineptitude of the captain and crew. It’s all we’ve got.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 5, 2008
I think the reason most us don't jump ship is because we're afaid of the sharks.
