Amateur Draft Open Thread, Part 3

Carrying this over from the last thread...

First Round: Joshua Fields, RHRP, U Georgia

Fields is a reliever who's walked 42 batters in 70 innings these last two years. He throws hard, with a fastball in the mid-90s and a sharp curve, and he's proven difficult for righties to hit, but he has trouble against lefties and did I mention that he's a reliever? Because if there's one thing this team needs more of, it's right-handed relief pitchers with hard fastballs and iffy control. Also, at an alleged 6', he's one inch taller than Tim Lincecum, who I guess was too little for our likings.

Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb. Taking relievers in the first round is dumb, especially when building an effective bullpen on the cheap is the only thing your GM can do even remotely well. This is the worst season ever.

Second Round: Dennis Raben, LHB COF, U Miami

Big slow dude with power and patience, his scouting report makes him sound an awful lot like Brad Wilkerson (before the aging and injuries). Won't be good in the field; will have to make it with his bat, which has both a bunch of holes and .500 SLG potential.

Third Round: Benjamin Pribanic, RHP, Nebraska

Fourth Round: Steven Hensley, RHP, Elon

Fifth Round: Brett Lorin, RHP, Cal State Long Beach

Jarrett Burgess, RHB COF, high school

I really shouldn't have any hope that this organization will one day be well-run, should I?
No
I will never be able to leave the Mariners

But how many years of this shit would make it legit?

I will be long dead by the time we win a WS
It's already a foregone conclusion that we will be the last team in baseball to win a WS, right?
No

Texas is in this to win it, too.

The Expos too.
They're getting a ton of production

from guys they got in the minor league FA draft. They’re maximizing their (meager) resources.

Looks to me like they don’t have the fire to stay in this fight…. pansies.

You think the Mariners will someday win a world series?
Hard to believe they will with how the team in ran today.
It has to happen

http://www.exitmundi.nl/eternity.htm

wtf?
I couldnt sleep the night that I first read this
In the vacuum of nothingness

A world series celebration for the 1997 Mariners team will appear. And maybe 2001. Great.

If we don't have hope

we have nothing.

So...we have nothing.
Damn it, Yankees
Will we see another pick before I have to leave around 3?

Hmmm…

Shouldn't we have picked Dykstra?

I thought he had power and good plate approach…I’m glad it took us 2 drafts to get 1 reliever.

K rate/contact look suspicious

I’m not too mad that we passed on him, but yeah – would’ve preferred it to what we DID do.

I would rather have Dykstra over Fields
Yes

that is a good restatement of my comment.
I thank you for that.

k douche
I see what your doin' herer
I hope to God the second half of that sentence was on purpose
Brad Wilkerson just got walked intentionally.
wow

who called for that?

Giradi, I suppose.

Farnsworth got to pitch to Rod Barajas instead.

Vidro must have been on deck

the only OTHER player who’s worse…

It's going to be awesome when we take a relief pitcher with our second pick.
Adam Jones finally homered again
I was hoping he wouldn't single again

Every time he singles it seems like Vidro hits into a double play

w/ Sherrill getting his 20th save

I’m really glad the M’s don’t play today.

Sarah Jessica Parker goes for the triple crown on saturday!
HAHAA...

HILARIOUS!!

Jesus chocolate chip christ we picked a RHP power reliever?

Was Hunt still on the board?

Hunt is still on the board, isn't he?
I just got here

and you are correct. Augghghhhhghghghgg

He's struggled recently

Teams are backing off quickly. It’s weird how they do that with one guy, but Alvarez breaks a bone and then sucks, and still goes #2.

We'll get him with our supplemental first round pick
The one we got from offering Guillen arb and then letting him walk, right?
Wow the Red Sox pick according to their needs?

SHOCKED

Toolsy multisport high school shortstop is a needs pick now?
Maybe their 'need' is to spend some of that money

bribing a football player out of his commitment to Tennessee.

Maybe the Sox know something we don’t, but this pick screams train wreck.

Julio Lugo is their SS
That's kind of irrelevent for a two-sport HS pick
I'm really glad we used our first round pick to cover for a mistake we made ourselves

I’m also really glad we value relief pitching so much that we trade it for Horacio Ramirez.

But we can use Fields as a chip down the road

I hear Ramirez is ‘fixed’ now. Something KC taught him on the landing of his right foot.

I bet the Dodgers would consider flipping Chan Ho Park for Fields too, if we sweetened the pot a bit.

Flexibility

fields giving radio interview
he's excited to do what the club asks him to do, 'help, anyway I can'

he’s confused…didn’t he see ‘The Tirade’ yesterday?

Wait though, if Atlanta picked him last year

he should be decent, right?

its ATL, they know pitching, correct?

fuck were fucked arent we

Fields does indeed throw funny
See, I don't have cataracts
Notice that I didn't say bad
zomg no religion
We need a strict "Atheist Only" draft policy.

Like Toronto’s “white only” policy, but more discretionary.

Anyone listening to the Fields interview?
Among others...

“I prayed about it… a lot…” (on not signing with Braves)
“The Lord blessed me with opportunities…”

More like, 'I didn't like the dollar amounts they were giving my agent.'
Yes.

We’re so glad he’s wearing a blue shirt.

It looks so much better than a black shirt
He's ready to be a Mariner

He knows where his priorities lie.

I'm glad I refreshed before I wrote LATE
Greatest story ever:

Well, I saw that Gordon had to wear a black shirt. So I asked the media guy here if I could wear my blue shirt and he said yes.

You don't just pull that out of a hat...THAT'S reasearch!
You've played baseball your enitre life, what's it like being here on draft day?
Based on a sample size of a handful of strikeouts Fields seems to like throwing high and falling off the mound
That sounds fixable
So, entertainment either way?
He will not be boring
I am

He doesn’t sound mad about being drafted by us

I wouldn't be either.
Thank god we offered Guillen Arbitration
Now we can draft a Micah Owings like player!

Woot!

I like how one of the D'Backs's back end starters

Is a better hitter than our DH and 1B

Maybe he could be our DH when he isn't pitching

At this point, it would involve trading Clement + Triunfels.

And a better pitcher than 3/5 of our rotation?
I don't actually consider that impressive for a pitcher
And you consider being better than Vidro impressive?

Although that is kind of comparing apples and oranges

For a pitcher?
Which is why I added the apples/oranges comment
Shoulda gone for bananas and kiwis.
Apricots and pineapples!
Tea and crumpets.

Wait….

Hot dogs and peanut butter.
Vidro thinks that sounds delicious
I'm sure he's tried it before.
HEY!! Let it go..NO ONE gets them all right...

or ANY of them if your M’s personel.

He sure throws interesting.

I like it. It’s pretty amusing. That was one loopy ass curveball, too.

by the way, I typed “curbeball” and the spell check suggestion was “knuckleball”

WHAT.

Scouting report

Physical Description: He has a lean, wiry and thin frame with whipping arm action—kind of like a more physical Tim Lincecum.

And was wearing a blue shirt?
Well that's enough to piss me off.
Anybody know anything about Jamie Nilson out of CWU
No... but he hit almost .500 this year....that's crazy
He's a friend on mine

And apparently the fact that he races boats is scaring teams away

according to the Yakima-Herald

ELLENSBURG—Central Washington senior Jamie Nilsen broke a school record with his 22nd career home run in the first game of a baseball doubleheader sweep of Montana State Billings on Sunday.

Dang, he was in town, I could've watched it....
I wonder what he did

in the second game of the doublehader

So after the first round our organizational needs are as follow

Catching
Corner infield (offense)
Corner infield (glove)
Middle infield (offense)
Middle infield (glove)
Corner outfield (offense)
Corner outfield (glove)
Center field (offense)
Center field (glove)
Positionless bat (offense)
Starting pitching, righty (power)
Starting pitching, righty (control)
Starting pitching, lefty (power)
Starting pitching, lefty (control)
Relief pitching, righty (control)
Relief pitching, lefty (power)
Relief pitching, lefty (control)
Good players

So many high draft picks, so few holes to fill.
That's the same as it was this morning.
Can't put anything by you
Gold star
Gillaspie

is still available

Having watched more video

Fields comes almost completely over the top, which should help his curveball be more of a weapon against both lefties and righties. So that’s something.

Yeah, whatever...

Did his dad play in the NFL?

Didn’t think so.

bad fastball movement
He also has bad fastball movement
That's bad.
and he has crazy ass hair
They showed his ass hair?
You better believe it
That's good.
Ken Griffey Jr....Keep watching....

cos my 6.7 HR/FB ratio means it could be awhile… *ding *ding *ding

"Surprised to see"

So many relievers go in the first round.

Ha.

Let's see:

Work: Pissing me off.
Odd vibration in my car: Pissing me off.
Gas prices: Pissing me off.
M’s draft: Pissing me off.

At least there’s some consistency. This Fields guy better be one kick-ass reliever.

"This Fields guy better be one kick-ass reliever."

I’ve got a funny story about that

Do tell.....
Strikes out a lot of guys with a good curve, lots of trouble throwing strikes
That's not funny.
You have a weird definition of funny.
Probably too much time across the pond.
His control problems are probably fixable

It’s not that he’s a bad reliever… I just hate it when pitchers don’t know where the zone is

fixable by the team that gets him for nothing after we tire of him after four years.
Whatever happened to Joe Borchard?
ended up in Florida.

sucks.

To be fair Matt Thornton still isn't really good.
Can we hire Kim Ng yet
Oh god gammonds.. hilarious

Pat Gillick wants to leave the Phillies better than he found them, that is his moral character.

I heard that! Toronto Baltimore and us have something to say about that..
I couldn't believe he said that
Gillick didn't salt the earth behind him or anything.
Bavasi's doing more long-term damage to the team than Gillick.
Part of me actually misses Gillick.

I can’t believe I said that.

Bavasi's giving away chips, but they aren't resulting in wins.

That’s the difference between him and Gillick.

Vidro eats the chips
and hot dogs
Come on M's

Younger more talented Butts, Younger more talented Butts…come on

If they draft butthol with the sandwich pick I'm going to hurt someone, and it won't be myself
Explain sandwich picks to me again?
Smart teams get them

Pay no attention to them

We don't have one

does that work?

We didn't offer Guillen arbitration
Wow, you're a one man echo-chamber today
delicious
Barbeque sauce
BBQ sauce on a sandwich?

This had better be some kind of awesome pulled pork sandwich or a weird UK thing

BBQ sauce is good on anything

including BBQ sauce.

I hate BBQ sauce

The correct answer is garlic salt

Yes BBQ sauce is medicore at best.
Another strike against the Robert/JI ticket
I used to carry around a flask filled with garlic salt
Agreed...BBQ sauce is delicious..but some brands straight suck
Very true

Especially in England.

I put BBQ sauce on damn near everything
I don't know what would we more weird:

-finding out that you, me and Jeff are long lost relatives or finding out that we’re not actually long lost relatives.

LL is the Baseball version of the Maury show
Coach is chinballs.
Rec'd.

Beat me to it.

Rec'd too
Graham is too short for our family
Asian mailman?
Every family needs a midget.
To be fair I did end up with Asian genetics :(
I thought you were black.

Huh.

I love bbq sauce on chicken and turkey sandwiches
BBQ sauce or ranch dressing.

Give me either one and I’m happy.

With cream cheese
I thought they were those little colored flag-toothpick things you get in deli sandwiches.
Wr9iong

Barbecue.

I was once in a spelling bee as a kid where that word eliminated the entire field. Every single competitor insisted on putting a Q in it.

so we can trade them off
I love this rapid fire picking haha
There goes Gillaspie
Giants draft = very conservative, but pretty good
This guy is way better than Bud Selig at announcing names
Maybe he's sober.
If I had to do that job. I think I would have to drink
I have to drink because of my job.

I can’t imagine that’s any better.

You know, there seems to be a lot of baseball players in this draft.

According to ESPN, at least.

not enough professionals though
YONDER ALONSO
A PROFESSIONAL HITTER IN COLLEGE

OMG NCAA SCNADAL!!!111

Vidro is in college?
Gotta finish that cooking degree
What?

They actually said that?

Several times...just over half the players are of the baseball variety.
"Now this kid here, he's a real basbeball player"

That kind of thing?

Yup
God I hate ESPN now.

It used to be so cool back in the day.

It did go downhill after Olbermann's and Patrick's heads got too big for their bodies.

They became like the bobblehead universe.

I remember watching ESPN when it first came out and being in heaven.
Problem was

Once The Big Show got into a groove, then ESPN kept trying to replicate what was really just good chemistry and Olbermann’s charisma, so then every Sportscenter anchor from there tried to become a one liner machine.

Olbermann was good.

Then he did politics, which sucks. Now he does Sunday Night Football on the side and the suckiness has stayed with him.

Sad turn of events.

Olbermann is awesome at what he does.
I disagree.

He is an angry man.

Funny and good at what he does...he does get heated though.

TV personalities do that for ratings.

I don't think he is funny anymore.

That is his other problem.

That's more your problem than his.
Yeah, I guess I grew up.
i like him the better than the politcal pundits
They are all horrible, including Olbermann.

I can’t stand to watch any of the political shows for more than 5 minutes.

CNN International is about the only news channel I can enjoy for an extended period of time.

Ok, I think we get it O'Reilly
Flagged
I knew you'd appreciate the reference.
zomg no politics about political pundits
He was on Patrick's ESPN radio show a while ago

and he is such an arrogant prick these days.

"This kid's actually a hockey player but we drafted him because he has a badass name"
Michael Saunders?

Hardly a badass name.

Maximo Mendez.

Now you’re talking.

Johnny Champion is still my favourite name ever
Johnny Dickshot.
Three words.

Pebbly Jack Glasscock

Johan Assman

Funny thing is, my girlfriend’s grandma’s maidan name is Assman. And her last name is currently Steinke. Talk about getting hit with the bad name stick.

My father apparently used to work with a woman named Annahl Butte
Years ago, the Astros had to change the team name when they took over the club in Kissimmee FL

because othewise they would’ve been the Kissimmee Astros

Wonderful Terrific Monds
it's Wonderful Terrific Monds III

somehow the whole ‘the third’ part makes it even funnier.

Dean Windass?
Miroslav Satan
I think this might be the most popular hockey jersey in history
I'd buy it if I was a bigger Satan fan.
Would be trumped if Kevin Love gets assigned jersey # 69
If that happens I will destroy the offending team with thousands of JI-style letterbombs
Personally

I think this might be better than his actual career.

I would write RODNEY GUILLORY over and over again in caps letters

but I’m the one going around loudly proclaiming that OJ Mayo is the best player in this years draft and that I will scream and jump for joy if the Sonics take him and don’t move to OKC

Rodney Guillory remarks

really wouldn’t have an affect on me. I’m upset that they let the guy anywhere near the program. Personally I hope our entire compliance office and Garett get the boot.

At least OJ finished on the honor roll, unlike Love. His academics won’t hurt us like Love’s will hurt ucla.

But Rodney Guillory will

and when you get right down to it, UCLA’s hoops program has enough built up credit (for the time being) to easily take the impact of a Kevin Love dropping classes mid year. BTW, this is another unfair aspect to NCAA policies in that it’s much harder for a potential hoops player to finish his last year at UCLA and avoid negatively impacting the APR than it is at ‘sc because of the quarter v. semester system.

I'm not entirely convinced that Guillory will hurt us

but I do hope it makes the NCAA change their system, A LOT.

Also ucla should switch to a real system. Quarters are for community colleges.

Quarters work well

and I’m pretty sure that some combo of Bush/Guillory will hurt – if it’s lack of institutional control, it could be real trouble, most likely it won’t be.

I’m still not sure why Guillory was ever near the program after Trepagnier.

Also, it’s my understanding that an athlete can make up for damage to the APR by coming back to school and progressing towards a degree, which Kevin has indicated he intends to do.

I guess after he busts out of the NBA

he’ll have a degree in PE or something to fall back on.

I could totally see him as a junior high gym teacher.

Haha

you seem to be selling him a bit short. He actually did very well at the combine athleticism tests and has lost ~20 lbs since the end of the season. He’s changed my mind from “fringe starter and useful contributor” to “solid starter, potential All-Star if everything breaks right”

I'm just a hater

and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

Good, me too

But you win points back for being an M’s fan

It was great when he played in Calgary and they wore the jersey with the demonic horse head
Unfortunately that never happened
Just traded him on my Hockey franchise.
Summer Leagues get better names.

Isliexel Gonzalez. Jetsy Extrano. McyQuin Lora. Rigoberto Rangel. Ambioris Hidalgo. Axel Wel. Janelfry Zorilla.

I could go on.

Bruno Mercedes!
Turn back the clock night...

Arquimedez Pozo!

Josias Manzanillo!
Yorman Bazardo, ftw
If he had stuck around...

It would’ve been hard for me now to come up with an image linking him to the Bizarros.

Sealab 2021 or the Superman villain, either or.

Alberto Bastardo!
Sadly, I don't think his dad ever saw him play.
Yhency Brazoban begs to differ
If only his defense were as good as his name

Not hitting too bad in Wisconsin, tho.

It works for my fantasy team.

Oh wait…I can’t say that here.

catching on quickly.
Robin Big Snake

Native kid. I saw him at a Vancouver Giants game once.

Incidentally, I have a niece who refers to her breasts as the Vancouver Giants.

I’m not kidding.

haha ESPN

Enough players for 50 rounds, amirite?

Na, most teams stop drafting before then
Pitching Coach drafted
dear dog rays fans are crazy
Says a man writing a letter to his dog
Or furry
yiff
btw

we have confirmation that the two grinding fursuits are guys

Not that surprising.
Not at all surprising.
Kind of amsuing when you see the expression on the racoon's face.
how do you make an expression on a custome?
Man we've all been infected
Why put on a raincoat if you're already wet?
Not surprised in the slightest.
I know juniper cant read
I'm pretty sure the ARod boys and girls club spot is the most annoying ad of all time
At least they werent taking fielding lessons from Jeter.
I absolutely agree.
Although I'm also tired of "Ken Griffey Jr."

“Keep watching.”

Every clip in the ichiro ad is from 2001
YOU WANNA TRUCK
he should have stopped the fat little from eating ice cream.
[pong noises]
Oh god the memories
Hay is is vitor artinez.
GET ON WITH THE SECOND ROUND
How awesome would it be if they drafted another small RH relief pitcher in the 2nd round?
So my draft tracker isn't stuck then, eh?

Is this a tv ad break or something

The live feed still has Logan Forsythe as the last pick.
USA draft blah blah blah, urban kids need to play ball blah blah blah
jimmy rollins, mowin' lawns, blah blah blah...
What I don't understand (and I don't want to sound like a bigot)

Is why when Larry Bird says more white Americans should be in the NBA, he is blasted for making that comment, but when black people complain about there not being enough black people in the MLB anymore, its socially acceptable. I just don’t understand why it works one way and not the other.

Double-standards are fun.

(and I say this as a non-black and non-white person)

Are you green?

Damn Martians

I'm asian.

I laugh at all of your racial double-standards.

Why are all asians good at maths

there ha.

And shitty drivers
I got a ticket last night :(
When driving down the interstate and I see a slow driver in the left lane, I ask my girlfriend

Old or Asian? (you can usually tell because most asians drive new asian made cars and old people drive old falling apart american cars).

I have several anecdotes to reply with but they're all overly mean to a specific gender

even though in every case so far, I’ve been right in my prediction about the sex of the driver.

Pretty much

Asians tend to not like American cars in general. And not like Korean cars either, so that kinda leaves like six or so makes.

I'm white guy and I hate american cars. I do like European or japanese
I'm an asian guy, but I hate US cars for a reason.

I’ve yet to see one that I can afford take the abuse that my two Japanese cars have taken.

american cars are crap.
I agree even though I drive a ford

Seems like Americans can’t keep up. I really want a prius.

excuse me while i gag.

Also, I drive a ford and it is the best vehicle i have ever owned.

HIDE THIS SUBTHREAD FROM CORCO
I hated math and I'm a good driver.

Ha I defy your stereotypes!

You're just a bad Asian then
This statement is actually very true.

I hate math, love baseball, and I drive competently to boot.

I also fail the car test. I do not own a riced-out Acura.

Asians love baseball
Not the ones from Cambodia.
Any luck having

Brangelena Jolie adopt you?

Just Japanese people...

I find it very rare to find Chinese people who genuinely like baseball

Twinkie.
Frosted twinkie, thank you
And Ping-pong

oh wait that’s just Chinese people

I am as well. As Graham can attest to, it's more fun this way
I'm not asian
It's half more fun if you're Graham
So.

The idea Major League Baseball had to generate interest for the draft was to make the first and supplemental rounds four hours long combined.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$'s
i am sick of big brown
Flush.
that took me a min
I'm quick with poop jokes.
yeah poop did not cross my mind
It might have had something to do with the fact I had to go to the bathroom at the time.
hay is is vitor artinez.

DIE.

DRAFT PEOPLE!
so the 2nd round is not on TV?
Resume please
So is the draft actually paused, or did Drunk Bud just take out the guy at the computer?
Well..went to college..graduated in 2007. Prior work experience at the law school on campus. References upon request.
My references sabotage me
It's not cool when they phone jihad your prospective employer.
Like I'm going to let you get hired ahead of me
This plan isn't going to work if you don't actually search for a job nimwit
I'm just going to poach your jobs whenever they ask for references
Yes, clearly they'll hire you seeing as we have completely different technical backgrounds and training...

Your planning is full of fail, what are you trying to do? Get hired by the Mariners?

If you do, try not to mention the whole college part of your life
You can see the subtle genius at work huh
Enjoy getting hired and then fired when Bavasi is sacked.

Me, I’m holding out for the new regime.

You'd hire me back eventually
Yeah, but I'll assign you to do analysis for the single A team as punishment.
I'd still enjoy that job
He'll assign you to scout the LLWS
That still sounds better than my job.
Lookout Landing Wool Sock?

I’m not good with anachronisms

acronyms

unless that was part of the joke.

No, I have no idea what I'm doing
Yeah - it's pretty boring until it's finished, but while it's being knitted...

wayyyyyy too much excitement

boring until it's finished implying currently being knitted?
Dammit

it’s pretty boring once it’s finished

BRB gotta go throw my keyboard under the bus

Well, there's always one thing you can do with a sock after it's finished.
Give it to Salvation Army along with its twin?
Put half a brick in it and go chav-hunting?
I wish I had managed to find a picture of a knight riding a dinosaur here
Little League World Series.
You've got mail!
Dear God a movie by the title of "Because I Said So" is starting in five minutes

How did I not hear of this before? It has Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore in it so it must be good

You need help

Badly.

Mandy Moore is cute

she’s really underrated

I met her in person once

She shocked me by being surprisingly normal-seeming and very good-looking (that part was less shocking)

We seriously drafted a closer rep'd by Scott Boras.
Maybe they're sucking up to Boras to help keep Beltre
If this were in any way true I would support it.

But it’s not. They just really are that stupid. It’s hard to fathom actually.

If this is the case:

Best pick ever.

(PS-This is totally not the case.)

Excuuuuuuuuse me for trying to find the silver lining here...

runs away crying

Damn you SBN2.0 for eating my asterisks!
We can convert him to 1B if we need to fill a need
Or he'll be the bizarro Brandon Morrow and after he impresses in ST, he'll open as the #5 starter
Diane Keaton is hilarious these days
Did the draft break?
Because you touch yourself at night
[doesn't work in this situation]
Safeco/Mariners back in the news

Robert/JI '09
The candidates endorsed by Jose Lopez
The REAL Double Play Twins
So I hear we traded with the White Sox for Josh Fields

How long until Beltre is gone???

Huh?

Oh wait, I think I get it.

I've been a WS-Josh Fields fan for a while now

This reliever of ours is only going to bug me.

So uh guess who we sent to Chicago for him
argh
It's okay we'll just call up Mike Mors- oh shit
My wife is going to fire me, becuase I hung out on LL all day and did not get some of my house projects done
Another Dykstra
I've heard those aren't welcome at Safeco.
Could've had

another Schlereth. Are the DBacks just gonna call him Stinkson?

What happened to Melville and Meyer?
Come on Melville @ 66?
We're next!!
Who went 64-65?
Nvm drafttracker is making me look stupid today
ITS ....Dennis Rayben...?OF....lefty!! WHooo
Dennis Raben
What's wrong with him?
Kind of a "what have you done lately" kid...and he apparently hasn't.

Sounds like a Mike Wilson from the left side.

Pitcher/Outfielder

Probably an outfielder ;P Played at Miami with Yonder.

Did well in Cape League, check

disappointing college season, check
corner player, check

we just drafted Matt Mangini again.

Love of bukkake?

Hopefully check

I thought that was understood

but go ahead and add it if you think it helps.

I hate that we didn't offer Guillen arbitration

It’s like the 19th worst thing that the Mariners have done over the past twelve months, but whatever. It still displeases me.

add it to the list
I did

It’s 19th.

Raben is interesting

Big ole lefty

That's what we need...I'm told.

With that, I’m going home.. too much ‘work’ this afternoon.

Did we just draft a patient left handed bat with power?
Scouting report says he takes too many pitches he'll never be a Mariner.
sounds stupid
Yes sir

I’ll say 1 for 2 for the M’s this draft so far

What the hell does Shields think he's doing
What is the on field delay?

I need answers!

Threw at Crisp

Crisp charged because it was clearly intentional, Shields missed badly on the first punch, Crisp delivered one…they end up on the ground, Gomes tried to beat Crisp while he was down.

the Rays have their first meaningful division rival brawl! Im so proud.

His MLB profile says "takes too many pitches."
What school is he coming from?
The U it looks like
Miami

Gla dwe got him though, his problems are easily fixed

What the hell....Miami!!
THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS
The U

where the football players forget the name of the school and call it “The U” instead

I heard Miami.
PARTY IN THE CITY WHERE THE HEAT IS ON ALL NIGHT ON THE BEACH TILL THE BREAK OF DAWN
Miami
Hey, looks like you found the answer to your own question!

didn’t even need our help

Miami has back spasms
Tampa
Wait make that Miami
We drafted him once before, 49th round of the 2005 draft
Melville still hasn't been drafted
Two college players so far

This team doesn’t want to spend long rebuilding.

2 College players with glaring problems

they’re fooling themselves on the length of rebuilding by adding these two.

I just looked at teh scouting video of Raben

I take back what I said about wanting him. H doesn’t have very good bat speed

Does that shock you?

What we see: Two college players with glaring problems.
What the M’s brass sees: a brilliant college arm + a power lefty who will be ready by 2010.

I'm not shocked at all

the organization is futile…. nothing it does shocks me, your post just made it sound like you thought they were actually doing something good.

Oh, nah

You know what they say about the use of sarcasm over the internet.

Lobstein to the Rays?

Maybe you guys are on to something.

Melville still hasn't been drafted
Yes I noticed that as well. M's better get him
Melville, Melville, Melville
M's pick Nebraska pitcher Pribanic
This sounds awesome

“Strengths: Arm strength that allows for a fastball up to 94 mph; he shows the ability to throw three average pitches. (though the offspeed offerings are rated as poor currently)

Weaknesses: His fastball is straight; he doesn’t have a long track record of success and is used only as Nebraska’s Sunday pitcher. “

A reach for a future reliever

Meh.

On the other hand, the Mariners draft a pitcher with a changeup?
Did Melville tear a labrum last night or something?
Raben

http://saberscouting.wordpress.com/2008/03/26/dennisrabenreport/

Physical Description – Large, extra strong, muscular frame. Wide shoulders and is a true physical specimen. Thick legs, muscular arms. Probably maxed out physically but as big as he is, that’s fine. Has the look of a slugging big leaguer already. Well proportioned athlete, doesn’t look overly muscled despite his size. Looks like Chipper Jones.

Hitting – As confident a hitter as you’ll see. Good swagger at the plate. Short, powerful stroke with great extension. Long follow through with very little effort through the zone. Ball just explodes off his bat. Smooth, compact swing. Shows ability to use the whole field but doesn’t seem quite committed to it yet. Stays closed, on the ball and lets his hands do the work. Tends to chase the ball up and out of the zone. High setup with his hands, stance looks somewhat like David Justice. Very relaxed at the plate with an aggressive approach. Doesn’t take bad swings. A little pull happy right now and must learn to deal with pitches on the outer half. Looks like he was born to hit, not many things to go array in his swing. Needs some refinement in his approach.

Power – Pure power hitter with plus plus power right now. Hits towering home runs, light tower power. Has the tendency to overswing and doesn’t need to. Can produce 400 foot + home runs with a flick of the wrist. Power is game playable, not just BP power. Can drive the ball out in any part of the park. Has a slight uppercut and produces tremendous loft. Future 40 home run threat.

...

Huh.

I will say that it seems this was written by Dennis Raben.
He better have good teeth
He won't fit in.

Notes – Fiery, emotional player who sometimes can let that get in his way. Can’t stand to lose.

Ha

Definatley not right for Seattle.

His stock has fallen a lot since that was written

I wonder if the back injury was still affecting him when he came back last season

I like the pick

His leg kick doesn’t interfere with his mechanics and still loads his arm pretty well, plus it doesn’t leave him in a poor fielding position since he decelerates pretty well

I don't mean to pick on you

But are you implying that a pitcher’s mechanics are less important than the quality of his actual pitches?

More important
aren't the pitches the result of the mechanics?
Only in a really general sense
Only in the sense that mechanics are the physical mechanism through which a ball is thrown
yes and no

things like arm loading can tell you things about velocity but there is only so much good mechanics can get you before you need talent. Plus there are so many subtle things you can do and get drastically different results as a pitcher.

no not at all,

but I will say that I can get a much better grasp of a pitcher’s mechanics by watching video and seeing things I like versus what I dislike then I can the quality of his pitches. In scouting videos from scout or mlb.com just aren’t long enough to get a real great feel for the quality of pitches he throws

addition

I’ve only seen video so I can’t say for sure but it doesn’t look like he is throwing anywhere near max effort which is good. He doesn’t look very comfortable out of the stretch

K, so he'll just have to throw perfect games every time out

no biggie

Jacoby leaves game with injured hand/wrist

ahahahah

Finally

Good news.

Maybe he injured it in the brawl.
Dammit

I want to see this brawl so bad!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a video highlight in gameday right now.
awesome

already have it saved to my computer, thanks man

You know it was a good fight when the pitching team's DH gets ejected.
Ty Morrison to Rays

I would like to trade scouting departments.

Melville!

to the Royals

His demand weren't rediculous

I wonder why he fell so far. The Royals will need to pony up first round money to keep him away from college

That last statement might be why

He cna change his mind and decide to hold a team ransom.

But any HS player can do that

Why does one go in the first round and another in the fourth? (Assuming equal talent; my guess is that people soured on Melville’s talent, and didn’t want to spend that much money on a guy that didn’t project as a top of the rotation guy… but who knows)

Oh.My.God.

Who the hell wrote the script to “Because I Love You”

Why would we know that?
Maybe one day you'll be flipping channels and be like "'Because I Love You' has Mandy Moore in it and she's attractive. Maybe I should watch it"

Do not watch it

*It's called Because I said so

Ooops

A Walk to Remember has Mandy Moore in it and she's attractive

and has no Diane Keaton orgasming. It’s much better.

Only you would ever do that.
What happened
OK well, I just saw Diane Keaton making out and heard her orgasm.

I feel sick

Mandy Moore?
Diane Keaton

blank”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Because_I_Said_So(film)

The film received overwhelmingly negative reviews, scoring 5% on RottenTomatoes.com
That's pretty generous of them
This movie's Wikipedia page is making it sound worse by the minute

this is one of the worst premises ever

I can't wait for it to be over
YES

I triumphed over my natural instinct to change the channel once again. That was even worse than Indiana Jones 4

Rec'd for achievement!
What are you talking about?
I bet the author is in there somewhere
Studio research showed that a whopping 82% of the audience was female. 55% of the turnout was 35 or older. 83% was Caucasian.”[3] Opening during Super Bowl weekend may have contributed to the lack of male interest.
You'll enjoy this

Because I Said So is the lowest rated of Mandy Moore’s 18 movies

And you just watched the whole damn thing

Don't forget I've also seen License to Wed
I saw that movie too

Part of a double feature with Oceans 13. It was like one movie for the price of two.

Why would that make LFoJL sick?
vitor artinez?
Karen Leigh Hopkins & Jessie Nelson
Pribanic didn't look that great at Nebraska this year

I’m not too thrilled with this pick.

Yeah....Sunday starter?

warning! warning!

Note to the commentators covering the draft on MLB.tv

I can hear you guys talk right before whoever is at the podium begins talking.

“Good job.”
“I have to piss.”
”...sigh, this is long.”

Hensley!

Wooo…more college pitching!

U know, I don't think we have enuff pitching...
How many pitchers are we going to take in this draft?
I believe pitching is our only weakness right now
I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT BELIEVE THIS
To top this shit draft off, TB is getting destroyed
Apparently Manny and Youk got in a shoving match in the dugout.
Youk is playing RF

huh

Crisp was ejected. He's the guy who first charged the mound.

In the previous inning, Pedroia got hit by a pitch, and then Manny hit a LONG homerun and admired it for like 40 seconds before running the bases.

First Red Sox hitter the following inning was Crisp. He got drilled by the first pitch.

Didn't look to me like he admired it for long at all
Manny probably forgot which team he was on.
I bet I can predict what Mariner websites are going to love or hate

our draft.

Lemme try this.

Love = The official site.
Hate = everyone else.

What about DOV
That's who I was thinking of specifically
What do you think he'll think of the draft?

I’m seriously wondering if ANYONE would look at our picks, look at who’s on the board, and go, “The M’s kicked ass today.”

You’re right that if anyone would do it, it’s him, but this may be asking too much.

Logie might.

Just so he can disagree with Adam on Baker’s blog.

I don't think he'll say it was a good draft necessarily

but he will try to find silver lining.
“Fields allows us to slip Morrow into the rotation or to trade Putz. That means that this draft picks allows us to start reloading for 2010. BABVA.”

Ha! You called it man

I owe you a beer.

I should’ve known.

DOV?
detectovision.com
This isn't a website, it's an internet abortion.

This nutcase thinks Griffey will be a great player at age 39?

Good lord, I hadn't read that in a while

How can one man be so consistently wrong?

DOV: Sanctuary for Mariner fans that were laughed

out of LL and USSM.

Future home of Coach/Butthol?
Here's a link to Hensley

Looking at his game log, he’s really good unless the team he faces has any talent (real D1 schools).

Failed

Link

Damn, Elon has a sick background for their site.

I guess that’s what happens when your team is called the Flames

I think George Lucas may want to sure

Sue?
We need to keep JI in office and off our keyboards
*Phoenix

whoa my brain doesn’t work very well

Good stuff

man, if only he could pitch against Davidson every game.

Seems a bit homer prone, but I don’t know the league average in…whatever tiny league this is. Sunbelt?

Here we Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Image of the day!

Imagine if that connected

Nice reflexes, Coco

that’s a great picture.

Great camerawork

Give that cameraman a raise. Thats amazing timing

That is awesome.

Give the guy who took that a raise!

Way ahead of you

I lost it laughing at the swing and miss pic

Jesus Fucking Christ another RHP.
They draft another RHP?

FUcking dirtbag
Day one of the draft has been an absolute disaster.

Please, can we fire Bill now?

This ones on Fontaine
And there goes John Lamb in the 5th

I’m not happy with how this day has gone.

Big program, 6’7” guy… another Doug Fister?

He is going to drive his Lamb-orghini?
Not nearly as good of a name as Fister though.
This draft just went from D to F-
A draft-eligible sophomore?

the 4th starter at LBSU? In the 5th round?

seriously, is Bob Fontaine hogtied and locked in a closet somewhere? Who’s running this shitty show?

This is such a depature form last year's draft.

What the hell happened?

Fontaines drunk?
Now we know who Selig's drinking buddy was
Perhaps today should have been LL's drunk thread
It's almost like Fontaine wasn't even present for the draft.

What an unmitigated disaster.

I really wonder whos running this shitshow
Last year's first few rounds after Aumont weren't much better

But I can’t believe that this is the same Fontaine who netted us Morrow, Tillman, and Butler with his first three picks of the ‘06 draft.

I'll take Danny Carroll over this

though Almonte was a head-scratcher.

I feel the opposite

While I generally don’t like “toolsy” guys, everyone was saying that Almonte might have been the best pure athlete in the entire draft.

But most said that he had very little baseball ability

and a weird swing.

Long Beach State team average k/9: 7+

LBSU team average BB/9: 1.9

Brett Lorin K/9: 5.8
Brett Lorin BB/9: 2.6

Well, at this rate the minor league system will remain a wasteland for another year.
I actually think we have a pretty strong minor league system below AAA
Eh, you're right.

If only we still had those three great arms we shipped out to Baltimore.

Yeah,

I miss Chris Tillman. The worst part of it is Tillman and Bulter were complete steals in the draft.

GOD THE RED SOX HAVE THREE BIG WHITE GUYS IN THE OUTFIELD RIGHT NOW

How has TB not scored 380000000 runs by now

Jesus,

that outfield is bad, 2 first basemen and a RF

At least they don't have Adam Kennedy hitting third.
lol at JD Drew in CF
Why? He's not that bad.
yeah i guess

I could be worse. like Raul in center

Speaking of Jose Lopez

Did you know he has a 110 OPS+ right now? And that his 33 homeruns have come off of 32 pitchers (Paul Byrd being the one he’s struck twice). What a great guy

Funny bit of scouting from the MLB tracker on Raben..

Apparently he is a big dude that takes too many pitches, which results in him hitting in negative counts.. Sounds like a problem that this coaching staff can correct! BE AGGRESSIVE!

Where is the accountability in this draft?
Clearly this a draft run by people who think they're gettin canned tomorrow
Jarret Burgess eh... ?

Anyone know anything about him?

Or Jarrett.. either way
woooooo a hitter!

now who the hell is this guy?

If anyone is bored look at Shunick

drafted by teh Reds, his arm does this really funky thing as he released the ball.

ugh

he’s go hurt his rotator cuff if doesn’t fix that follow through, decelerates way too abruptly

It doesn't look good
I 100% believe this
Reliver Mark Worrell homers in his first big league at bat...

lolololololol the Nationals for not being able to retire the Cardinal pitchers (5 RBI)<br />lolololololol the Cardinals for not being able to retire the Nationals.

"@" is a no go on SBN 2.0
truly a disaster of epic proportions
Truly a disaster of JI proportions..
I beginning to think the reason that only I fail like this

is because other people are able to delete their own posts, therefore making them appear to be less foolish.

Does it make you feel better when you tell yourself that?
I prefer not to answer.
Maybe that is for the best because

You * post deleted *

deleting posts is a blast
Was Jeff the only person you managed to moderate yesterday?
This is some spectacular SBN 2.0 HTML fail even for you, JI
Less of a fail than hitting Adam kennedy third.
I think it's the same thing
So this draft has been all kinds of awesome
Where the hell is Fontaine?
Somebody's trunk
Wayne Krivsky

He wants to make sure Bavasi gets canned so he gets the job.

I fully expect Krivsky will be our new GM.

It will be a dark day in Mariner nation.

You are incorrect.
Turns out the Rays can't win in Boston
Shields needs to be smarter.
And the lineup needs to be better
Yes.

But we got owned tonight.

We hit two guys, get three of our guys suspended (not including Carl/Aki/Aybar probably getting slapped) and then Lester hits two without getting ejected, including hitting Carl/Aki.

And we’re getting swept with a weak bullpen heading to the west coast (well Texas, then LAA). Just not good.

Still time for a comeback
Not happening man, not tonight.
It never happens when it's the Mariners
Okay, I'm home

Hensley put up some quality numbers but Elon doesn’t necessarily play a tough schedule. From what others above have read, it appears he struggles against actual competition :/

Look at this pic of Brett Lorin. He looks like Derek Zumsteg’s big younger brother.

Anyway, apparently Fontaine is drunk and on a liquor/RHP bender.

I just went back and looked at Graham's original diary on tRA and ROA

and the second to last comment just made me really sad. Also, is there a reason you guys use tRA more than ROA?

Jarrett Burgess

Man, good luck finding any info on sub-top tier HS kids, but I can tell you that Burgess’ alma mater, Florida Christian in Miami (and speaking of fixations, the M’s like Miami for some reason) produced fellow M’s prospects Denny Almonte and Ricky Orta.

Too bad that's not the kid who cheated in the LLWS

or else we’d be on to something.

This is the second mention of the Lookout Landing Wool Sock

Why have I not seen it before, and how can you cheat in a sock?

You cut a hole in it.

Duh.

I dunno

but two rats can fuck in one.

A little more on Jarrett Burgess

6’3, 180, RH bat, and has played tournaments with the World Wood Bat Association, one as recently as this past weekend, so he has some experience, however little, with hitting with a wood bat.

Any performance numbers?
I'm digging and can't find any
Elijah Dukes should be in jail.
Tell us something new
If he was Ryan Ludwick would be standing on first right now.
And the Nationals blow the 7-0 lead

they truly are worse than us.

At least they scored 7 runs
That's worse.
But we never even get a chance to give up a lead
Better to get your ass kicked than to have lead and lost.
And Wil Nieves is their "offensive" catcher.
I'm pulling for a walkoff from Dukes or Milledge
Well you're just an asshole.
Who in gods name is Joe Mather?
Some long term minor leaguer that was tearing up AAA.
I am going to murder Ryan Franklin.
several times
Elijah Dukes belongs in jail.
Dude do you remember when I totally called that?

That was awesome

*runs away crying*
One of the most pathetic weeks in Mariners history?

I’m starting to think so.

Starting to?

I guess when you are living it it doesn’t become clear that it’s pathetic until it starts to pass.. I am rapidly approaching the “laughing” stage at this point.. Not so ready for the “fear the future” stage that I am sure is coming.

We get swept to fall 15.5 games back

Way under .500, the clubhouse blows up, and now we see one of the more pathetic drafts in recent memory.

When will this team stop kicking us in the nuts?

It's our fault for having testicles.
If we didn't have testicles

they’d just verbally abuse us instead. Why must I keep coming back for more?

I need help.

Brett Lorin

15 app, 8 GS, 2.61 ERA, 48.1 IP, 4 HR, 14/31 BB/K. From the video, it looks like he works in the high 80’s low 90’s with his fastball, but has trouble locating his breaking ball. He does work some decent offspeed stuff. At 6’7”, he stays tall while throwing from a 3/4 slot. Probably another FISTER in terms of what he brings to the table.

Also, the Long Beach State baseball club is nicknamed the Dirtbags. I find this hilarious, especially when the headline on their CSTV site is Five Dirtbags Selected In 2nd and 3rd Rounds.

Steven Hensley

Looks like he pretty much relies on his low 90’s fastball. Looks like he might have a two seamer but don’t quote me on that, and whatever high 80’s pitch he was throwing did break down a bit but looked pretty meaty. Throws an occasional wonky breaking pitch that floats a bit too much for comfort, and it looks like he struggled to locate it anyway. I can see why he gets hit against better competition: kind of hard to get good hitters out as a starter when you only throw one good pitch.

Even Baker doesn't understand the "use #1 pick on reliever" thing.

He has an interview with Fontaine up. No real ground broken here.

Where's it at?

Here you go.

Thanks
Ah, you said Evan rather than Jeff

That’s why his name didn’t look familiar ;P

He missed the important question:

Why a reliever?

I think Baker is numb to these moronic decisions now.

He’s becoming as apathetic as we are.

Pribanic

The scouts say 94 on the fastball but it’s more like 91-93, and he tends to leave that fastball up in the zone. I saw a change with some movement and a slider that has some chain-jerking late swerve. His location certainly needs work but it’s not hopeless. I’m still not thrilled with the pick, which had to be made based on physical build and tools.

Your reports on these picks fill me with despair.

::runs out of the room crying::

FWIW I try to temper any optimism or pessmism

plus I’m not the most informed guy. I’m probably one of the few M’s fans still paying attention at this point, though.

None of these guys look terrible. They just have their own issues and limits.

Something tells me John McMichem had a strong say in picking many of these guys

Sounds like they had their eye on Fields back in March. I bet these guys think nothing of drafting a reliever.

The scout that has been scouting him this past year is named Chuck Carlson and between Craig and Chuck, we feel we have an extensive history with Josh. What I’ve seen of Josh this year, I’ve seen him twice, once was an exhibition game against the Atlanta Braves. We got to see him pitch the third inning of the game, he was 93-97, his breaking ball was a power curveball which was up to 85 miles per hour, he gave up one hit and then retired the next three that he saw. He looked like he fit in in that setting and it wasn’t hard to imagine him being in that setting in the future in a Mariners uniform.
It must be noted that the above observation was from a ST exhibition game, back in March

Meaning they believed this back in March.

Errr

Question: Do you know who the Mariners closer is?

Fields: I am not sure.

It would be so cool

If Fields walked up to JJ Putz and said, “Who the hell are you?”

WTF?

I could understand this if Fields was going to the Pirates or something, but until Craptastica 2008 JJ belonged in any discussion about the best closer in baseball. How could you not know who JJ is?

I don’t think this can easily be explained away with the MSM’s “East Coast Bias” either. Blargh.

Great. Hes stupid, too.
Jeremy Beckham = Dule Hill

I knew he looked like the Guster
We're apparently

going to draft him too.

Well this blows

Hopefully we’ll have brand new, smarter people drafting next year.

Younger, more talented butts?
butthol doesn't count
