Carrying this over from the last thread...
First Round: Joshua Fields, RHRP, U Georgia
Fields is a reliever who's walked 42 batters in 70 innings these last two years. He throws hard, with a fastball in the mid-90s and a sharp curve, and he's proven difficult for righties to hit, but he has trouble against lefties and did I mention that he's a reliever? Because if there's one thing this team needs more of, it's right-handed relief pitchers with hard fastballs and iffy control. Also, at an alleged 6', he's one inch taller than Tim Lincecum, who I guess was too little for our likings.
Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb. Taking relievers in the first round is dumb, especially when building an effective bullpen on the cheap is the only thing your GM can do even remotely well. This is the worst season ever.
Second Round: Dennis Raben, LHB COF, U Miami
Big slow dude with power and patience, his scouting report makes him sound an awful lot like Brad Wilkerson (before the aging and injuries). Won't be good in the field; will have to make it with his bat, which has both a bunch of holes and .500 SLG potential.
Third Round: Benjamin Pribanic, RHP, Nebraska
Fourth Round: Steven Hensley, RHP, Elon
Fifth Round: Brett Lorin, RHP, Cal State Long Beach
Jarrett Burgess, RHB COF, high school

I really shouldn't have any hope that this organization will one day be well-run, should I?
BrianL - June 5, 2008
No
Jeff Sullivan - June 5, 2008
I will never be able to leave the Mariners
But how many years of this shit would make it legit?
Robert Lintott - June 5, 2008
I will be long dead by the time we win a WS
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
It's already a foregone conclusion that we will be the last team in baseball to win a WS, right?
BrianL - June 5, 2008
No
Texas is in this to win it, too.
marc w - June 5, 2008
The Expos too.
JI - June 5, 2008
They're getting a ton of production
from guys they got in the minor league FA draft. They’re maximizing their (meager) resources.
Looks to me like they don’t have the fire to stay in this fight…. pansies.
marc w - June 5, 2008
You think the Mariners will someday win a world series?
BrettJMiller - June 5, 2008
Hard to believe they will with how the team in ran today.
Fin - June 5, 2008
It has to happen

Robert - June 5, 2008
wtf?
Fin - June 5, 2008
I couldnt sleep the night that I first read this
Robert - June 5, 2008
In the vacuum of nothingness
A world series celebration for the 1997 Mariners team will appear. And maybe 2001. Great.
BrettJMiller - June 5, 2008
If we don't have hope
we have nothing.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 5, 2008
So...we have nothing.
BrianL - June 5, 2008
Damn it, Yankees
marc w - June 5, 2008
Will we see another pick before I have to leave around 3?
Hmmm…
JY - June 5, 2008
Shouldn't we have picked Dykstra?
I thought he had power and good plate approach…I’m glad it took us 2 drafts to get 1 reliever.
Montucky - June 5, 2008
K rate/contact look suspicious
I’m not too mad that we passed on him, but yeah – would’ve preferred it to what we DID do.
marc w - June 5, 2008
I would rather have Dykstra over Fields
Edgar for Mayor - June 5, 2008
Yes
that is a good restatement of my comment.
I thank you for that.
marc w - June 5, 2008
k douche

Brad Wilkerson just got walked intentionally.
Llewdor - June 5, 2008
wow
who called for that?
Edgar for Mayor - June 5, 2008
Giradi, I suppose.
Farnsworth got to pitch to Rod Barajas instead.
Llewdor - June 5, 2008
Vidro must have been on deck
the only OTHER player who’s worse…
Montucky - June 5, 2008
It's going to be awesome when we take a relief pitcher with our second pick.

BrianL - June 5, 2008
Adam Jones finally homered again
Jeff Sullivan - June 5, 2008
Yay
BrianL - June 5, 2008
I was hoping he wouldn't single again
Every time he singles it seems like Vidro hits into a double play

PhilKenSebben - June 5, 2008
HAHAA...
HILARIOUS!!
Montucky - June 5, 2008
Jesus chocolate chip christ we picked a RHP power reliever?
Was Hunt still on the board?
Nick S - June 5, 2008
Hunt is still on the board, isn't he?
Llewdor - June 5, 2008
Yeah
marc w - June 5, 2008
I just got here
and you are correct. Augghghhhhghghghgg
Nick S - June 5, 2008
He's struggled recently
Teams are backing off quickly. It’s weird how they do that with one guy, but Alvarez breaks a bone and then sucks, and still goes #2.
marc w - June 5, 2008
We'll get him with our supplemental first round pick
kentroyals5 - June 5, 2008
The one we got from offering Guillen arb and then letting him walk, right?
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
Wow the Red Sox pick according to their needs?
SHOCKED
PhilKenSebben - June 5, 2008
Toolsy multisport high school shortstop is a needs pick now?
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
Maybe their 'need' is to spend some of that money
bribing a football player out of his commitment to Tennessee.
Maybe the Sox know something we don’t, but this pick screams train wreck.
marc w - June 5, 2008
Julio Lugo is their SS
PhilKenSebben - June 5, 2008
That's kind of irrelevent for a two-sport HS pick
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
I'm really glad we used our first round pick to cover for a mistake we made ourselves
I’m also really glad we value relief pitching so much that we trade it for Horacio Ramirez.
Jeff Sullivan - June 5, 2008
But we can use Fields as a chip down the road
I hear Ramirez is ‘fixed’ now. Something KC taught him on the landing of his right foot.
I bet the Dodgers would consider flipping Chan Ho Park for Fields too, if we sweetened the pot a bit.
Flexibility

We need a strict "Atheist Only" draft policy.
Like Toronto’s “white only” policy, but more discretionary.
Llewdor - June 5, 2008
Anyone listening to the Fields interview?
JY - June 5, 2008
Among others...
“I prayed about it… a lot…” (on not signing with Braves)
“The Lord blessed me with opportunities…”
JY - June 5, 2008
More like, 'I didn't like the dollar amounts they were giving my agent.'
lyleleander - June 5, 2008
Yes.
We’re so glad he’s wearing a blue shirt.
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 5, 2008

Woot!

I like how one of the D'Backs's back end starters
Is a better hitter than our DH and 1B
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
Maybe he could be our DH when he isn't pitching
At this point, it would involve trading Clement + Triunfels.
Fin - June 5, 2008
And a better pitcher than 3/5 of our rotation?
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
I don't actually consider that impressive for a pitcher
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
And you consider being better than Vidro impressive?
Although that is kind of comparing apples and oranges
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
For a pitcher?
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
Which is why I added the apples/oranges comment

seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
Rodney Guillory remarks
really wouldn’t have an affect on me. I’m upset that they let the guy anywhere near the program. Personally I hope our entire compliance office and Garett get the boot.
At least OJ finished on the honor roll, unlike Love. His academics won’t hurt us like Love’s will hurt ucla.
bluemax - June 5, 2008
But Rodney Guillory will
and when you get right down to it, UCLA’s hoops program has enough built up credit (for the time being) to easily take the impact of a Kevin Love dropping classes mid year. BTW, this is another unfair aspect to NCAA policies in that it’s much harder for a potential hoops player to finish his last year at UCLA and avoid negatively impacting the APR than it is at ‘sc because of the quarter v. semester system.
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
I'm not entirely convinced that Guillory will hurt us
but I do hope it makes the NCAA change their system, A LOT.
Also ucla should switch to a real system. Quarters are for community colleges.
bluemax - June 5, 2008
Quarters work well
and I’m pretty sure that some combo of Bush/Guillory will hurt – if it’s lack of institutional control, it could be real trouble, most likely it won’t be.
I’m still not sure why Guillory was ever near the program after Trepagnier.
Also, it’s my understanding that an athlete can make up for damage to the APR by coming back to school and progressing towards a degree, which Kevin has indicated he intends to do.
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
I guess after he busts out of the NBA
he’ll have a degree in PE or something to fall back on.
I could totally see him as a junior high gym teacher.
bluemax - June 5, 2008
Haha
you seem to be selling him a bit short. He actually did very well at the combine athleticism tests and has lost ~20 lbs since the end of the season. He’s changed my mind from “fringe starter and useful contributor” to “solid starter, potential All-Star if everything breaks right”

What I don't understand (and I don't want to sound like a bigot)
Is why when Larry Bird says more white Americans should be in the NBA, he is blasted for making that comment, but when black people complain about there not being enough black people in the MLB anymore, its socially acceptable. I just don’t understand why it works one way and not the other.

Old or Asian? (you can usually tell because most asians drive new asian made cars and old people drive old falling apart american cars).

Raben
http://saberscouting.wordpress.com/2008/03/26/dennisrabenreport/
Physical Description – Large, extra strong, muscular frame. Wide shoulders and is a true physical specimen. Thick legs, muscular arms. Probably maxed out physically but as big as he is, that’s fine. Has the look of a slugging big leaguer already. Well proportioned athlete, doesn’t look overly muscled despite his size. Looks like Chipper Jones.
Hitting – As confident a hitter as you’ll see. Good swagger at the plate. Short, powerful stroke with great extension. Long follow through with very little effort through the zone. Ball just explodes off his bat. Smooth, compact swing. Shows ability to use the whole field but doesn’t seem quite committed to it yet. Stays closed, on the ball and lets his hands do the work. Tends to chase the ball up and out of the zone. High setup with his hands, stance looks somewhat like David Justice. Very relaxed at the plate with an aggressive approach. Doesn’t take bad swings. A little pull happy right now and must learn to deal with pitches on the outer half. Looks like he was born to hit, not many things to go array in his swing. Needs some refinement in his approach.
Power – Pure power hitter with plus plus power right now. Hits towering home runs, light tower power. Has the tendency to overswing and doesn’t need to. Can produce 400 foot + home runs with a flick of the wrist. Power is game playable, not just BP power. Can drive the ball out in any part of the park. Has a slight uppercut and produces tremendous loft. Future 40 home run threat.
...
Huh.
Garces - June 5, 2008
I will say that it seems this was written by Dennis Raben.
Garces - June 5, 2008
He better have good teeth
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 5, 2008
He won't fit in.

Garces - June 5, 2008
Ha
Definatley not right for Seattle.
Edgar for Mayor - June 5, 2008
His stock has fallen a lot since that was written
I wonder if the back injury was still affecting him when he came back last season
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
I like the pick
His leg kick doesn’t interfere with his mechanics and still loads his arm pretty well, plus it doesn’t leave him in a poor fielding position since he decelerates pretty well
Trenchtown - June 5, 2008
I don't mean to pick on you
But are you implying that a pitcher’s mechanics are less important than the quality of his actual pitches?
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
More important
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
aren't the pitches the result of the mechanics?
pakipaki - June 5, 2008
Only in a really general sense
Graham MacAree - June 5, 2008
Only in the sense that mechanics are the physical mechanism through which a ball is thrown
seattlebruin - June 5, 2008
yes and no
things like arm loading can tell you things about velocity but there is only so much good mechanics can get you before you need talent. Plus there are so many subtle things you can do and get drastically different results as a pitcher.
Trenchtown - June 5, 2008
no not at all,
but I will say that I can get a much better grasp of a pitcher’s mechanics by watching video and seeing things I like versus what I dislike then I can the quality of his pitches. In scouting videos from scout or mlb.com just aren’t long enough to get a real great feel for the quality of pitches he throws
Trenchtown - June 5, 2008
addition
I’ve only seen video so I can’t say for sure but it doesn’t look like he is throwing anywhere near max effort which is good. He doesn’t look very comfortable out of the stretch
Trenchtown - June 5, 2008
K, so he'll just have to throw perfect games every time out
no biggie

marc w - June 5, 2008
His demand weren't rediculous
I wonder why he fell so far. The Royals will need to pony up first round money to keep him away from college
Trenchtown - June 5, 2008
That last statement might be why
He cna change his mind and decide to hold a team ransom.
Gomez - June 5, 2008
But any HS player can do that
Why does one go in the first round and another in the fourth? (Assuming equal talent; my guess is that people soured on Melville’s talent, and didn’t want to spend that much money on a guy that didn’t project as a top of the rotation guy… but who knows)

Crisp was ejected. He's the guy who first charged the mound.
In the previous inning, Pedroia got hit by a pitch, and then Manny hit a LONG homerun and admired it for like 40 seconds before running the bases.
First Red Sox hitter the following inning was Crisp. He got drilled by the first pitch.

I’m seriously wondering if ANYONE would look at our picks, look at who’s on the board, and go, “The M’s kicked ass today.”
You’re right that if anyone would do it, it’s him, but this may be asking too much.
marc w - June 5, 2008
Logie might.
Just so he can disagree with Adam on Baker’s blog.
BrianL - June 5, 2008
I don't think he'll say it was a good draft necessarily
but he will try to find silver lining.
“Fields allows us to slip Morrow into the rotation or to trade Putz. That means that this draft picks allows us to start reloading for 2010. BABVA.”

Last year's first few rounds after Aumont weren't much better
But I can’t believe that this is the same Fontaine who netted us Morrow, Tillman, and Butler with his first three picks of the ‘06 draft.

I'll take Danny Carroll over this
though Almonte was a head-scratcher.

Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 5, 2008
Funny bit of scouting from the MLB tracker on Raben..

Yes.
But we got owned tonight.
We hit two guys, get three of our guys suspended (not including Carl/Aki/Aybar probably getting slapped) and then Lester hits two without getting ejected, including hitting Carl/Aki.
And we’re getting swept with a weak bullpen heading to the west coast (well Texas, then LAA). Just not good.

Anyway, apparently Fontaine is drunk and on a liquor/RHP bender.

Jarrett Burgess
Man, good luck finding any info on sub-top tier HS kids, but I can tell you that Burgess’ alma mater, Florida Christian in Miami (and speaking of fixations, the M’s like Miami for some reason) produced fellow M’s prospects Denny Almonte and Ricky Orta.

Brett Lorin
15 app, 8 GS, 2.61 ERA, 48.1 IP, 4 HR, 14/31 BB/K. From the video, it looks like he works in the high 80’s low 90’s with his fastball, but has trouble locating his breaking ball. He does work some decent offspeed stuff. At 6’7”, he stays tall while throwing from a 3/4 slot. Probably another FISTER in terms of what he brings to the table.
Also, the Long Beach State baseball club is nicknamed the Dirtbags. I find this hilarious, especially when the headline on their CSTV site is Five Dirtbags Selected In 2nd and 3rd Rounds.
Gomez - June 5, 2008
Steven Hensley
Looks like he pretty much relies on his low 90’s fastball. Looks like he might have a two seamer but don’t quote me on that, and whatever high 80’s pitch he was throwing did break down a bit but looked pretty meaty. Throws an occasional wonky breaking pitch that floats a bit too much for comfort, and it looks like he struggled to locate it anyway. I can see why he gets hit against better competition: kind of hard to get good hitters out as a starter when you only throw one good pitch.
Gomez - June 5, 2008

Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 5, 2008

He’s becoming as apathetic as we are.
BrianL - June 5, 2008
Pribanic
The scouts say 94 on the fastball but it’s more like 91-93, and he tends to leave that fastball up in the zone. I saw a change with some movement and a slider that has some chain-jerking late swerve. His location certainly needs work but it’s not hopeless. I’m still not thrilled with the pick, which had to be made based on physical build and tools.
Gomez - June 5, 2008
Your reports on these picks fill me with despair.
::runs out of the room crying::
BrianL - June 5, 2008
FWIW I try to temper any optimism or pessmism

Something tells me John McMichem had a strong say in picking many of these guys
Sounds like they had their eye on Fields back in March. I bet these guys think nothing of drafting a reliever.
Gomez - June 5, 2008
It must be noted that the above observation was from a ST exhibition game, back in March
Meaning they believed this back in March.

Errr
Question: Do you know who the Mariners closer is?
Fields: I am not sure.
Kaorikaze - June 5, 2008
It would be so cool
If Fields walked up to JJ Putz and said, “Who the hell are you?”
Gomez - June 5, 2008
WTF?
I could understand this if Fields was going to the Pirates or something, but until Craptastica 2008 JJ belonged in any discussion about the best closer in baseball. How could you not know who JJ is?
I don’t think this can easily be explained away with the MSM’s “East Coast Bias” either. Blargh.
Frosty Raptor - June 5, 2008

Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - June 5, 2008
We're apparently
going to draft him too.
Tyler - June 6, 2008
Well this blows
Hopefully we’ll have brand new, smarter people drafting next year.
