OAKLAND -- Seattle Mariners Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Lee Pelekoudas announced today that the Mariners have released first baseman Richie Sexson.
"We felt that at this time it was in the best interest of the ballclub, and in Richie's best interest, to make this move" Pelekoudas said.
Thanks for the Funk Blasts, you clumsy giant.

His picture in the top left really makes me sad now....
But Woooooooooooo…sad that whoever his replacement is still blows.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
But his picture in the top left is so perfect for this occasion.
And we all know that Jeff’s not going to change it.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
I said nothing about changing it..and I still like it. It's just kinda sad at this particular moment (but fitting)
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
It just amuses me that Sexson's picture on LL will still be here even with Sexson gone.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
Someone should Photoshop him out
Garfield without Garfield style. Or maybe just leave his hand.
Now I’m laughing.
Shawk - July 10, 2008
Phil Hatzenbuehler - July 10, 2008
Haha
I knew this would get used again someday.
ralphie81 - July 10, 2008
If there's one person who's probably pissed off right now, it's probably Brian LaHair
(I’m not saying he should have been called up)
At least the FO recognizes LaHair is a AAAA player at best…
BrianL - July 10, 2008
My favorite part is how this might just make us worse
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
STRASBURG!
BrianL - July 10, 2008
When they start Vidro at 1B everyday, yes
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
No, we should start Reed there...
LantermanC - July 10, 2008
I agree...as I mentioned above..it needed to happen but we have nothing to plug in there that's better.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Which is why I don't see why it needed to happen.
Matthew - July 10, 2008
Perception is reality.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
I just think nobody could possibly believe
that this team has so little depth that there is nobody better than Sexson in the minors
Corco - July 10, 2008
Change for change's sake.
JI - July 10, 2008
If they start Vidro and Cairo it will make us worse
Oh and starting LaHair would also make us worse.
MFAN - July 10, 2008
Gotta suck to be LaHair and not get called up when the 2nd suckiest 1B (after Olerud) get's released
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Bearskin Rugburn - July 10, 2008
I am recommending this fancomment.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I see a floor
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
You see part of a floor.
But just when you get comfortable thinking you found solid ground, oh no! What’s this then?
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
The ceiling?
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Eyebrows - July 10, 2008
He was just starting to heat up...
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 10, 2008
My favorite part
was that they waited until he got hot to can him, and Vidro still hits 4th.
JI - July 10, 2008
It's unfortunate that the M's mustache/Felix ad is a casualty of this move
but that would probably be coming soon anyway because of Washburn.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
Nah, all they have to do is edit out the part after the ticket splash screen.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
They did change all the "Mojo Risin'" back to the always appropriate "My Oh My," didn't they?
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
Huh...I hadn't noticed that.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I figured there was a reason why they made his appearance like that.
I wonder if Richie saw the writing on the wall there too.
Double06 - July 10, 2008
link me
I’m not from Seattle and don’t know which ad you’re talking about. Can you hook up a YouTube URL?

Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
Why am I a little sad?
Corco - July 10, 2008
Because this means more Turbo.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
No that's not it
I’ve been suppressing and disacknowledging Vidro’s presence on the team for at least a month
As far as I’m concerned he doesn’t exist
Corco - July 10, 2008
It will be harder to ignore him when he's "playing" a defensive position
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
Before he could only bother us once every few innings.
Now he can bother us all the time.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
He's more likely to get "injured" playing a defensive position
Corco - July 10, 2008
God willing
ningwers - July 10, 2008
Shall we go all Tanya Harding on him?
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I can help with that.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
How soon can you have someone take out his kneecap?
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I can be on that within the next 48 hours.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
Wonderful.
Do you accept Paypal?
BrianL - July 10, 2008
This can be a charitable contribution.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
Fantastic.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
*cough* paper trail *cough*
ningwers - July 10, 2008
More of an electronic trail.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
No jury in the world would convict her anyways
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
Sweet and innocent, right here.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
That's going to take a lot of little hearts
ningwers - July 10, 2008
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
That's one really big heart
ningwers - July 10, 2008
One big one is all I can do right now.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
Stop saying things inappropriate like that.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
That's what she said!
JI - July 10, 2008
DIAF
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
I was waiting for that.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
Clever that they did this before a day-game.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
About f'ing time
That said, this will probably become the “Richie Sexson amusing photoshop memorial thread”. I always liked…

thejew4u - July 10, 2008
This was a favorite of mine:
Phil Hatzenbuehler - July 10, 2008
I'm glad "Funk Blast" outlived Bavasi's tenure in Seattle.
Is it dumb? Yes. Do I love it? Yes.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 10, 2008
It's also great how Ben Broussard had a role in Funk Blast's origin
He was the one who went to the EMP event and brought back the CD that inspired it.
Gomez - July 10, 2008
BIG RICHIE (repost)
After months of sucking and riding the pine
Richie has reach the end of the line.
Richie: So long, losers!
Pelekoudas: Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Richie’s phone: [rings]
Richie: hello
Sabean: Hi, Richie, this is the GM of the San Francisco Giants. I’m calling to express interest.
Richie: Alright!
Sabean: ... in telling you how much you SUCK. HAHAHAHA [click]
Richie: NOOOOOOOOOOO
BIG RICHIE
Gomez - July 10, 2008
Oh yeah.
If Sarah Brightman will perform live with that helmet throw video behind her, I just may become an opera fan.
Shawk - July 10, 2008
Bocelli dammit
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
I know I'm late
But why for the Bocelli love?
TheBishop - July 10, 2008
His version was first
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
But he's also pulling a Maggie Lizer
Which makes his version suckier.
TheBishop - July 10, 2008
As in Maggie Lizer ass off?
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 10, 2008
As does Bocceli
Blind my ass. How does he read music?
TheBishop - July 10, 2008
Tough call.
Because I’d rather look at Brightman. However a blind person in front of that video would seem oddly appropriate. Oh for comedy.
Shawk - July 10, 2008
Tuglett got called up!
MFAN - July 10, 2008
Wooo Tugger
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
Bit soon for memorials, perhaps
... but it’s fair to say that Richie was part of my Mariner induction.
At my first game someone who gave me a free ticket and I sat with got excited when he came up to bat and his was the first name that stuck with me.
Those homers during the opening week 2007 (along wih Felix’s start) were the catalyst for my fandom last season and he was the first Mariner slugger that I came to know, love and get frustrated at for striking out.
Thanks for the good times, “Big Richie”. I think we can all agree that this was for the best, though, before the #44 train derailed any further.
MarkE - July 10, 2008
Since I live in NY
I have to say Sexson’s walk off funk blast against Minnesota last year will always stick with me because that was the last time I was at Safeco.
GarlicFryCubFan - July 10, 2008
You know, over his last 20 games, Sexson has a .750 OPS.
Even in releasing their dead weight, this team does it stupidly.
Matthew - July 10, 2008
He's been an on base machine since the stance change, for whatever that's worth
HOW IS VIDRO STILL ON THIS TEAM
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
Gravity
ningwers - July 10, 2008
AND PLAYING REGULARLY
God this team is infuriating.
OlSalty - July 10, 2008
Until this team starts making decisions that hurt them next year and beyond
I’m fairly indifferent
ningwers - July 10, 2008
Vidro must have something on someone
Something really juicy. There’s no other reason so much suck stays.
oreotree - July 10, 2008
That's what kept Bobby Ayala employed for so many years, right?
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I thought it was for comic relief
oreotree - July 10, 2008
I always believed
Ayala had pictures of someone important and a goat.
Jeanuts - July 10, 2008
That's what my dad claimed.
I’d hear him scream that all the time while I was growing up.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I heard he was related to Lou somehow
marinator - July 10, 2008
Covertly tanking for Strasberg
Gomez - July 10, 2008
This is the opposite of covert
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
Selling off Raul and other more productive vets would be the opposite of covert
As it seems, to the media this is just the M’s dumping a bad player.
Gomez - July 10, 2008
OBP? You are caring about the wrong things...
Body language> OBP…
LantermanC - July 10, 2008
Agreed....he coulda been ready to tie Griffey's streak of games with a HR and they woulda cut him.
I’m not really sure of the timing.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Yeah, I'm baffled by this.
He hasn’t been all that bad over the last month or so, and Vidro continues to be the worst hitter in the majors. Dumb dumb dumb.
Aaron Campeau - July 10, 2008
But if you're tanking to land the #1 pick then it's smart smart smart
Gomez - July 10, 2008
There's no way they're that smart.
Intent matters.
Aaron Campeau - July 10, 2008
The belief that they have too little intelligence to make that decision is an assumption
Gomez - July 10, 2008
But a pretty darn good one
ralphie81 - July 10, 2008
His body language sucked.
See, it’s not the fact that Sexson sucked for a year and a half. It’s not the fact that he went on the record essentially waiting for his release. No, it was has BODY LANGUAGE when being told he would get more limited playing timed that triggered his release.
Indeed.
ThundaPC - July 10, 2008
Riggleman's explanation actually made a little sense to me.
If he’s not happy with sitting, then it could be a distraction and they might as well drop him. Why he is getting less playing time in favor of anyone else in the organization they can find to replace him with is what baffles me. I would be pissed too if Vidro was batting cleanup while I was getting splinters in my ass.
ralphie81 - July 10, 2008
I suggest Raul playing "defense" for the new logo.
RafaelCarmona22 - July 10, 2008
The logo stays.
Jeff Sullivan - July 10, 2008
Also a wise decision.
RafaelCarmona22 - July 10, 2008
Be careful.
Our not-so-benevolent dictator is pretty sensitive about the logo.
Thingray - July 10, 2008
It is a fantastic logo.
Jed MC - July 10, 2008
Probably because the logo kicks ass.
JI - July 10, 2008
It is perfect.
BrianL - July 10, 2008
I find it impossible to top that logo with a more relevant image.
Robert - July 10, 2008
Felix getting spiked
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 10, 2008
Loafie face-planting.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
I could get behind this
Robert - July 10, 2008
It's very symbolic too....and it'd piss LFOJL everytime he loaded LL.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Pretty much a perfect symbol of this season.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 10, 2008
AHEM royalties
I deserve a nickel for every time this thread is loaded.
JI - July 10, 2008
Your such a rec whore.
Robert - July 10, 2008
I didn't say I deserved a rec every time it was loaded.
JI - July 10, 2008
You wrote nickel, but you were thinking "something of value"
and Robert read your mind instead of your words, and the only thing he covets right now is recs, so… yeah…
LantermanC - July 10, 2008
Nickels aren't worth my time.
Robert - July 10, 2008
I was at the game last night
and after Batista got hurt and we took the break so RRS could warm up, Richie went over and sat on the bench with the bullpen guys. I was moving around to different sections so I’m not sure if he stayed there the whole game. But a position player sitting in the bullpen instead of the dugout? That might be some of the “body language” problems…
silentq - July 10, 2008
He might have known he was already out the door.
kentroyals5 - July 10, 2008
Perhaps he should have tried a more closed stance
