Wow
This is the only series i’m rootig for the M’s in… simply because I’m rooting for the Rays to win the East, so strasburg can wait one series
mariners124m - July 21, 2008
I'm just the opposite
i want the Red Sox in the playoffs again…. only because I’ve already grown tired of hearing about the Rays.

LL baiting.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - July 22, 2008
Not baiting...
I just don’t like Tampa … Never have, Never will.
MfaninAlaska - July 22, 2008
Sad.
Cairo has been collateral damage since he signed his contract. He should have never been in a Mariners uniform and he should have known this team had no use for him. Yeah, Cairo probably found it difficult to find a job this last offseason, but I am sure there were better places out there to help increase his long-term value. He committed career suicide by signing with the Mariners.
Wilder. - July 21, 2008
For a team with no use for him, we sure are finding a lot of uses for him.
Jeff Sullivan - July 21, 2008
Wasn't it funny when nobody was super livid when we signed him
because nobody thought he’d actually ever get any playing time.
Edgar for Pres - July 22, 2008
Didn't Cairo have only like 1 AB through the first 2 months of the season.
Then the team realized we suck and tried to improve things by making changes.
Wilder. - July 22, 2008
There is no floor.
Fin - July 21, 2008
Let Felix DH
Unless we can’t survive without the mighty wood of Cairo, Turbo, and Johjima.
Paytheline - July 21, 2008
That's what I've been saying
Have Felix DH whenever he isn’t pitching, then it can be Felix day everyday.
Fin - July 21, 2008
That is a great picture of Manny entertaining a crowd
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 21, 2008
I was trying to think of a caption until I realized I didn’t need to.
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
If Manny were traded to Seattle our team morale would skyrocket
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
But our practice time and seriousness would plummet
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
Maybe we can sign him via free agency next year
He fits the bill of a normal Mariners FA signing.
Fin - July 22, 2008
Manny as DH would be amazing.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
Except he's good

Awesome, though.

This is either Level 3 or Level 4, right?
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
I think you just guaranteed another week of sleepless nights for JI.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
No ma'am I do not like it.
JI - July 22, 2008
I didn't think so.
And I’m not old enough to earn the title ma’am.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
You prefer sir?
JI - July 22, 2008
Let's see what happens if you try that.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008

seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
Well used.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
I think I have enough goodwill built up to drop in a surprise sir.
JI - July 22, 2008
I can honestly say I never thought I would hear or see that sentence in my life.
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
It might be a lonely penalty box for you next time, then.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
I wouldn't do it unless it was funny.
JI - July 22, 2008
I have faith in this statement.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
You live in the south. Shouldn't you be used to being called ma'aam by now?
Or is it not used to refer to all women anymore?
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
Nope. They've moved on to baby, sweetie, honey, sugar.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
This saddens me.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
I kinda like it. At least it doesn't make me feel old.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
It didn't used to have such connotations.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
That's why I stick to "miss"
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
That just is too prim and proper for me.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
Better than ma'am though, right?
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
I will concede that much, yes.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
I think "woman" is better than all of those
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008

Is it Felix day yet?
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 21, 2008
Hoepfully only 1 more Washburn start to live through
Mariner John - July 22, 2008
Hopefully NONE more Washburn starts to live through.*
There, fixed.
We can’t risk a Washburn blowup after his last 10 start run.
Wilder. - July 22, 2008
So the 2008 Mariners are run worse that the 1997 & 1998 Devil Rays? Wow.
Jed MC - July 22, 2008
Not necessarily - they may just suck more
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
Hey
- Red Sox lost five straight road games before this game?
- Jason Varitek hadn’t homered since June 11 until this game?
That’s not a miracle….that’s:

JI - July 22, 2008
It's just comedy at this point
Since they’re tanking, why not just see how many retarded roster decisions they can get away with?
Gomez - July 22, 2008
Heh,
Miguel Jesus Cairo.
The M’s seem to have their saviors mixed up.
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
So Wlad is raking in Tacoma since is demotion
.264/.382/.564 overall,
.323/.432/.692 in July
21K/21BB in 131 PA, 10 HR in 110 ABs, incl. 7 HR in 65 AB in July.
SSS and all, but I’m a little curious as to why our big prospects have hit so well in AAA and so poorly in the majors (this is also SSS, since it’s a sample of Adam Jones, Wlad Balentien and Clement)
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
PCL league average OPS is in the .780s
It’s not just offense-friendly parks (as WLAD put up a lot of those recent numbers in Cheney, a pitcher’s park), but crappy retread AAA pitchers who either can’t get over the hump or washed out in the bigs.
Gomez - July 22, 2008
It's the flipside of guys like Corcoran getting shelled in AAA
and yet being oddly effective in MLB.
Seriously, part of it is an age/experience thing (certainly with Jones, a bit less so with Wlad), and part of it is just a natural learning process that many, many new MLB players have to deal with. Jumping a level is hard, and it’s not like you just take a guy’s MLE and plug it in as their first month or two’s projection. Clement struggled horribly when he got to AAA initially.
They’ll get there eventually, I’d bet.
marc w - July 22, 2008
I'd bet on them being succesful as well, it's just strange/frustrating to see our prospects flame out so horribly in the bigs
especially when they’re at an age that they should be reasonably advanced – e.g. at least have a shot at success (Clement 24, Wlad 23, Jones 22).
On the flip side, there have been quite a few top prospects who have come up and hit at least reasonably well across MLB such as Braun, Tulowitzki, Justin Upton, Longoria, etc. Of course our guys aren’t quite on the level of those four in terms of talent, but the way that (especially Wlad) flamed out at the MLB level is a little concerning to me (not a lot concerning, but a little).
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
When Justin Upton first came up, he didn't exactly excel
Braun is a freak, but then, he gave away a ton of value on D.
I know it’s weird to see other teams’ spects come up and add value immediately, but as you know, there’s no way to count on that. Andy LaRoche, Greg Reynolds, Luke Hochevar, Reid Brignac (extra-SSS), etc.
I agree that as the oldest of all of these guys, Clement really should be doing better. But again, he’s taken a while to adjust to advanced pitching before. To me, he’s something of a slow learner, but once he’s got it, he’s got it. Wlad’s a MUCH quicker learner (as was Jones), but they’re more inconsistent.
Wlad was considered by most M’s fans (and some M’s personnel) as org filler about 18 months ago, so I’m not terribly worried if he didn’t do as well as Tulowitzki/Braun in his call-up.
marc w - July 22, 2008
Yeah, I'm not that concerned about Wlad, more of a small red flag that he was as bad as he was in his call up
on defense as well. I still think he’ll hit at the big league level, although I’m not sure he’s ever anything more than a .260/.330/.500 masher with decent D. Of course, that’s a hell of a player if you have him for cheap so…
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
True
And I still find it funny that people are now ‘settling’ for .260/.330/.500. My god, an 800+ OPS in Safeco from a guy making peanuts?
I’m just as concerned with Clement’s D right now. Again, adjustment periods, etc., etc. Two more disappointing things in a season full of them.
marc w - July 22, 2008
Didn't we know Clement's D was a work in progress to begin with?
Gomez - July 22, 2008
Yeah, that's true
though, same as with Wlad, he’s taken it up a notch.
He looked OK in Tacoma… this is… this is baaad.
In fact, we were warned on both of them. I wasn’t as worried, given how they looked in Tacoma (Clement was better in most phases of D than Rob ‘Defense Only’ Johnson), and Wlad was light years ahead of even Jeremy Reed in the corners (and ahead of Mike Saunders now, though that’s perhaps more understandable).
The moral is: yet again, scouts know some stuff. They’re not always right, but sometimes, they’re right.
marc w - July 22, 2008
Yeah, I wrote .330/.500 and then realized "you know, that's a pretty damn good player the more I think about it"
Oh well – if you’re gonna have a terrible season, might as well have everything possible go wrong, am I right?
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
They seem like they're trying
Even the guys who’ve looked good (Morrow) have something disappointing about them (locked into bullpen role?).
marc w - July 22, 2008
I think the handling of Morrow has been the single biggest disappointment to me this season
He’s clearly an elite-level bullpen arm as an 8th or 9th inning guy, but he has so much more value long term as a starter. You’re hurting the team long-term in two ways by keeping him up here – you’re hurting his chances to become a good starter down the road (look at Papelbon) and you’re hurting the team by keeping a dynamite arm in the pen when you’re almost better off just losing the games anyway.
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
To be fair, Morrow did a pretty good job losing a few games right before the break though... =[
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
It's really odd
I keep wondering if there’s some sort of power struggle going on internally.
Group A succeeds in sending him to Venezuela to start
Group B succeeds in getting him back to the MLB club and in the ‘pen after he started the year in West Tenn.
Group A puts pressure on Group B through the press
Group B gets to Riggleman, insists that he’s ‘too valuable’ out of the pen now.
It’d be fascinating if it wasn’t so damned annoying.
marc w - July 22, 2008
It'd be fascinating if it weren't with one of our biggest hopes for the future =(
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
Wasn't Reed OPSing like 1.100?
And Hulett OPSing like .850?
LantermanC - July 22, 2008
no
marc w - July 22, 2008
Hulett is 25, OPS .887
Reed is 27, OPS .970
