The Yankees are not expected to make a blockbuster deal before the trade deadline, but they are seeking ways to upgrade their rotation and are taking a serious look at Seattle lefty Jarrod Washburn.

The Yankees haven't missed the playoffs since 1994.
I remember what happened down the stretch in 91, 92, 93, but I have no memories of anything past mid-July in 1994. God bless my brain for blocking out that trauma.
They say if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it, but I already understand that so I’m going to. But without having done so, yet, I’d guess that this photo would probably sell for at least the salary of the MLB minimum player:
Anyone who says that they don’t photoshop their photos and gives the reason that “Ansel never would’ve used Photoshop!” doesn’t know the story behind this photo:
Anyway—I believe this is the shot of the foothills where it’s a tradition of either high schoolers or college kids to go and scratch graffiti into the mountain. He took the photo anyway, and had his retouchers edit out the words that were written on that mountain. I can’t remember if he touched up the negative, too, or what. It’s something like that, though…
Here’s a larger copy of this shot, but I’m not sure it’s a good enough scan to see if you can tell where the touch-up work is. But in one copy of this that I’ve seen, you can definitely tell…
It wasn’t printed by Ansel, so it’s only sorta expensive, but it is an actual photograph from his actual negative. There are several more in that series that I hope to buy soon…
You know, when Jeff was gone and you were in charge of the gamethread, you said “New thread up in fifteen” and I said “Fifteen minutes or posts?” and then you said something like “Fifteen moonphases. Of course, minutes. When did we ever open a new thread because of the number of posts?”.
I never thought I’d see the day. It’s like he came back from winter league with a new sense of purpose. He might crack the top ten LL prospects list this winter.
You know, when you hide subthreads it causes the z-scrolling to malfunction, at least for me, because it wants to scroll to the new comments I can’t see but it isn’t able to.
is that fights these days are 12 rounds of glorified sparring. We just don’t see drag-out fights like Arguello/Pryor anymore, where both guys are trying to knock each other the fuck out.
Well, they're finally admitting that Bedard's DL stint wasn't just a paper move
his shoulder’s sore, and not getting any better.
A smart team judges the Washburn thing separately from Bedard’s injury, because it doesn’t matter at all if Washburn might make the M’s marginally more competitive in 8-10 more games versus RRS or Ryan Ketchner. But the M’s would have to admit that they aren’t trying to win more games by trading Wash, and that’s what they’re reluctant to do. For reasons that nobody else comprehends.
I can just see some press conference with Lee or Armstrong telling gullible reporters that the team COULDN’T trade Wash, with the injury to Bedard, the injuries in AAA, RRS wasn’t ready, Batista still struggling, blah blah blah owe it to the fans best chance to win timing didn’t work out etc.
The Yankees haven't missed the playoffs since 1994.

Not a whole lot happened from Mid July to the end of the season.
The strike started on August 12th.

I remember watching a Griffey highlight reel in the Kingdome (for some reason)
and seeing clips of him kicking ass in 1994, and thinking “I don’t remember any of this…”

J-Ironic that you can remember falling on your head.

Thank god a drunk driver totaled that thing.

I'm sure it was all due to the car.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
As they say, a good picture's worth $1,000.
Of course these pictures are worth approxamitely $9,850,000. That saying sucks. Much like Washburn.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Uh... Coach?
It’s “a good picture is worth 1,000 WORDS, not $1,000…”
Otherwise, I’d be a pro photographer
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
Blame Family Guy.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008

seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
Well played on the Family Guy reference that I missed
seattlebruin - July 22, 2008
There was an episode called "A Picture Is Worth $1,000"
and I must have been thinking of that for some reason and thought it was the real saying.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Chris paints the picture for Peter, art dealer sees it...
Yadda, yadda..
Thingray - July 22, 2008
This photo
Is worth a hell of a lot more than $1000
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
Although one is pressed to explain why
Bearskin Rugburn - July 22, 2008
Things are often worth more than their tangible value.
I just paid $75 for about $3 worth of vinyl and $.50 worth of cardboard because it was worth $75 to me.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
OK, I'll bite:
what’d you get?
marc w - July 22, 2008
I knew you would.
Sealed. Usually goes for $150-$200 in that condition. I had to.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
Hype box set, eh?
That’s got all-time Tacoma anthem ‘My Hometown’ on it, right? Nice.
And an alt. version of ‘Julie Francavilla’ by Flop. I always hoped she heard about that song, and that she liked it.
marc w - July 22, 2008
Young Fresh Fellow's "Dark Corner of the World"
was worth the price of admission alone. The alternate version of “Julie Francavilla” is better than the album one, as far as I’m concerned.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
Did I miss something?
Looks like a dead tree to me.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
Yup.
ANY original Ansel Adams print starts at upwards of $5000.
That’s an original.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
And one of my life goals
Is to own an original print of
this.
It’s probably the photo that drove me to photography the most.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
That's unfathomably amazing.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008

PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
Thanks!
Thingray - July 22, 2008
I always forget that these pictures aren't as old as I think they are.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
Nope.
They say if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it, but I already understand that so I’m going to. But without having done so, yet, I’d guess that this photo would probably sell for at least the salary of the MLB minimum player:
Only 8 of them were printed. Ever.
Of course, as of right now per wiki, a sale of the “Moonrise, Hernandez” photo original has been the highest of any Ansel print. And that was for less than $1 million, amazingly. I’m fairly certain, though, that while it’s one of Ansel’s more popular images, his 1930s stuff that doesn’t get that much attention is right up there in value.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
For right now I think I'll have to settle for replicas.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
And more photo-geekery...
...just because I can.
Anyone who says that they don’t photoshop their photos and gives the reason that “Ansel never would’ve used Photoshop!” doesn’t know the story behind this photo:
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
Do you have a link to that story as well?
Thingray - July 22, 2008
Tried to find it...
...but can’t right now.
I believe it’s in one of his books, though.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
You just gave me an idea for what to look for at the book store before I go camping.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
I'm re-reading his autobiography
For at least the 3rd time…
I could be wrong, but I think the story behind that photo is in this book.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
Care to give a brief summary
I’m intrigued.
bluemax - July 22, 2008

I’ll look for that tomorrow before I leave.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
I could stare at that for days.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
I have a fake copy, framed
And I’ve seen an original print.
The original is absolutely amazing.
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
I need this.
I don’t care if it’s a print. If I can stare at the little one on my computer, I could stare at one on my wall.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
A decent reprint is available
Probably worth the $70 it costs…
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
Thanks!
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 22, 2008
Have a
link to a larger copy, Paul?
kevin_ess - July 22, 2008
Hmmm.
A google search for “Moonrise, Hernandez” doesn’t really do it justice.
There’s a reason why Ansel wanted total, absolute control over even cheap duplications of his works…
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
I'm saving up for Ansel's photo of Ciscoe Morris's bush.
kevin_ess - July 22, 2008

PositivePaul - July 22, 2008
I don't care what anyone says, I love Georgia O'Keefe.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
No kidding.
Her husband did pretty well himself. Certainly one of my faves, too…
PositivePaul - July 22, 2008

kevin_ess - July 22, 2008

I bought his copy of Jeffrey’s bush:
It wasn’t printed by Ansel, so it’s only sorta expensive, but it is an actual photograph from his actual negative. There are several more in that series that I hope to buy soon…

Therefore
Baker=intelligent
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
Baker's line of thinking often = this team's line of thinking
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
I think he's just brainstorming
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
There are Baker posts I want to read and Baker posts I don't
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
I blame Canada.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
They're not a real country anyway.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Wrong
Robert - July 22, 2008
Aww. I lost all of that!
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Bahahahah
kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
Did you click refresh?
Souther - July 22, 2008
No, it just disappeared!
Of course I hit refresh!
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
That wasn't too bright.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
Have you read the book Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions?
It’s a Mad Magazine spin-off. You might like it.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Coach Owens justifiably slams a silly question.
I never thought I’d see the day. It’s like he came back from winter league with a new sense of purpose. He might crack the top ten LL prospects list this winter.
Matthew - July 22, 2008
HH will pick him up in the Rule V though.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Rule what?
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
Rule Five?
Souther - July 22, 2008
You're removed from the active roster long before Coach.
BrianL - July 22, 2008
The 40-man's all that matters.
Souther - July 22, 2008
You're not on that either.
We have a year before we’d have to put you on.
Matthew - July 22, 2008
I'm out of options though
Souther - July 22, 2008
A shame
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
Have fun at HH.
BrianL - July 22, 2008
Bluebird Banter will take him in the expansion draft.
JI - July 22, 2008
That would be pretty hilarious if he was the only poster there aside from the guy who runs the site
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Because he would probably still tell him to fuck off after like two gamethreads and go back to being alone
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Does Bluebird Banter really want to select anyone from our roster?
BrianL - July 22, 2008
Who doesn't?
Awwwwww yeaaaah represent.
Souther - July 22, 2008
That's a shame...see ya
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Damn it....
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Tell that to RRS
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
What sport is that?
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Take a gander.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Hockey?
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Is that that one that's kinda like curling?
Souther - July 22, 2008
Nah, it's the one where there's horses
who are racing.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Ok, now what?
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Am I the only one who can't see the image?
Souther - July 22, 2008
I can't see it either.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Well I can see it, and that's what counts
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
What's it of?
Souther - July 22, 2008
A gander stupid
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
Again, can't see the image.
Souther - July 22, 2008
See what it's replying to.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
Thanks Coach.
Without you, I could have never put 2 and 2 together.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Easy to infer
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
This here is the start of the Coach/Butthol subthread.
Non-approved posters will be banned.
Robert - July 22, 2008
Butthol's been banned.
Souther - July 22, 2008
See this is why I don't take boxing seriously, because neither do you
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
That wasn't a boxing
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
Why'd you say "is boxable?" What is boxable?
(I refreshed the page)
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
Calling this a forum
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
Seems like a silly rule
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
More or less silly than our shortstop?
Jeff Sullivan - July 22, 2008
How many team's shortstops can float in the ocean...our's can!
kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
All that blubber helps.
BrianL - July 22, 2008
Obviously less
You know, when you hide subthreads it causes the z-scrolling to malfunction, at least for me, because it wants to scroll to the new comments I can’t see but it isn’t able to.

It still works if you don't refresh.

I refreshed to see my ban message
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008

Like your groin?
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008

Boxing sucks. MMA is better.
Gomez - July 22, 2008
I enjoy boxing
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
I enjoyed boxing... years and years ago
Gomez - July 22, 2008
It's really been going downhill for quite some time.
Thingray - July 22, 2008
Part of the problem, aside from the corruption ;P
is that fights these days are 12 rounds of glorified sparring. We just don’t see drag-out fights like Arguello/Pryor anymore, where both guys are trying to knock each other the fuck out.
Gomez - July 22, 2008
Has Almost Live been released on DVD ever?
If not, damn I wish it will. Tired of browsing youtube for my favorite scenes.
Matthew - July 22, 2008
No >:(
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
Oh well, off to watch Green Riverdance again.
Matthew - July 22, 2008
We should start a letter writing campaign to King 5.
Aaron Campeau - July 22, 2008
No, we should do an online petition!
kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
RIP Rumors thread.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
I was wondering if the thread died, or I lost my connection.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Before it dies...
Will the M’s use Bedard’s MRI/injury status as a reason/excuse NOT to trade Washburn?
marc w - July 22, 2008
Think of the smart thing to do, turn it on its head, and you have your answer.
Souther - July 22, 2008
I hadn't thought of that before
God I hope not
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
Well, they're finally admitting that Bedard's DL stint wasn't just a paper move
his shoulder’s sore, and not getting any better.
A smart team judges the Washburn thing separately from Bedard’s injury, because it doesn’t matter at all if Washburn might make the M’s marginally more competitive in 8-10 more games versus RRS or Ryan Ketchner. But the M’s would have to admit that they aren’t trying to win more games by trading Wash, and that’s what they’re reluctant to do. For reasons that nobody else comprehends.
I can just see some press conference with Lee or Armstrong telling gullible reporters that the team COULDN’T trade Wash, with the injury to Bedard, the injuries in AAA, RRS wasn’t ready, Batista still struggling, blah blah blah owe it to the fans best chance to win timing didn’t work out etc.
marc w - July 22, 2008
And that's a shame
because on the field and in the standings, it’s obvious the team is done for and has been done for in 2008 for months.
Gomez - July 22, 2008
Nah. See that would require what we call "thinking".
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
At least, thinking straight and reasonably.
Souther - July 22, 2008
The idea's neither straight nor reasonable
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
You missed the point of my post.
Souther - July 22, 2008
Is your argument that the M's will do the smart thing
and trade Washburn because the ALTERNATIVE would require thinking?
That’s insane.
just insane enough to WORK!
marc w - July 22, 2008
Reverse psychologery
OlSalty - July 22, 2008
Like this
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 22, 2008
Nope. They just won't think of using Bedard's injury as an excuse to keep Wash.
They’ll keep him because “Oh, hai, he’s pitching well.”
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
You know
its almost come to the point where reading LL reminds me of a lot of the ancillary crap we had to sift through on the old ESPN boards circa 2002-2003.
Its almost not fun to read anything but the posts these days.
bluemax - July 22, 2008
Hey, it's not easy when your team is tied for the second worst record in all of baseball.
Coach Owens - July 22, 2008
That's good!
kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
Your fault for reading it.

kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
I skip over 90% of the comments these days
So meh.
bluemax - July 22, 2008
Over at USSMariner I typically look for only DMZ, Derek, Jeff Nye comments and if they are interesting I'll read backwards up the comment section.
kentroyals5 - July 22, 2008
USSMariner is unreadable
aside from those three.
bluemax - July 22, 2008
Dave?
BrettJMiller - July 22, 2008
Fuck Dave, he's terrible.
JI - July 22, 2008
Seriously, he said Jose Lopez was bad at something
burn the witch!
seattlebruin - July 23, 2008
I guess these are the places you gravitate towards, segmentation_fault.
Mariner John - July 22, 2008
Maybe
I blame moving every 2 years as a kid. I can’t stay around any group of people for a prolonged period without getting tired and wanting to move on.

At least there's more variety here.
