UPDATE 2: This team steadfastly refuses to complete trades in a timely fashion.
UPDATE: Jarrod Washburn has been traded to the Yankees. Not yet sure on the return.
Go to town.
We're headed to the eighth inning, with Seattle down 8-3, but on the bigger news front, we're hearing buzz that Jarrod Washburn might not make it to tomorrow with the M's. A trade with the New York Yankees appears imminent. We're trying to peer into the dugout to see whether he's still there. We'll have an update after the game.
FSN's reporting a Washburn/Vidro for Cabrera/Igawa rumor.
Jayson Stark:
Even Ibanez may not be affordable, however. Seattle hasn’t asked interested teams for specific names yet. But the Mariners are one of many clubs saying that, because Ibanez projects as a Type A free agent, they would want the equivalent of a first-round pick and a sandwich pick for him.

PARTY DAY
Matthew - July 26, 2008
USSM says it's a done deal.
JI - July 26, 2008
If the Mariners manage to trade Washburn and Vidro
Well, I’ll buy a new ball cap.
Jordan of Boise - July 26, 2008
Last rumor thread didn't go so well
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 26, 2008
This trade only helps The Rays.
BrianL - July 26, 2008
But who will start instead of Washburn?
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 26, 2008
IGAWA!
kentroyals5 - July 26, 2008
Strasburg!
Matthew - July 26, 2008
Igawa?
:(
OlSalty - July 26, 2008
I'd expect an emergency callup tomorrow.
Then Hyphen to be recalled later in the week.
BrianL - July 26, 2008
Because I don't want anything to ruin this
I will assume that Igawa is “retiring” after this year and the M’s want him so they can send Morrow down.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
Feirabend > Wash.
RafaelCarmona22 - July 26, 2008
Ha. No.
Matthew - July 26, 2008
$$$ wise.
RafaelCarmona22 - July 26, 2008
But for SAS purposes, yes
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
This means more RRS.
JI - July 26, 2008
Vidro isn't Matsui's replacement is he?
Because that would be awesome.
JI - July 26, 2008
So did you guys hear we're working for Tim Hudson and Adam LaRoche?
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
I hate how Tim Hudson became super awesome.

RafaelCarmona22 - July 26, 2008
DS9 was awesome.
So many great minor characters like Weyoum and Dukat.
EnglishMariner - July 26, 2008
Elim Garak as well.
RafaelCarmona22 - July 26, 2008
Best ST Alien character ever.
of all the alien characters Garak should have gotten his own movie…
But then they still have not done a Klingon movie but that is another topic.
mark sobba - July 26, 2008
I wouldn't call either of those two minor characters
given there was a three-season story arc around them…
seattlebruin - July 26, 2008
DS9 was the best Stark Trek series ever created.
I believe this was because since it took place pn a stationary object, the story had to be character driven rather than plot driven like the rest. This made for much more interesting stories to people like me who prefer that style of storytelling.
thewyrm - July 27, 2008
Washburn update after the commercial.
JI - July 26, 2008
Yankees fans
think they’re not going to use Washburn. They think the trade was just to dump Igawa.
bluemax - July 26, 2008
I hope they use Washburn.
His regression to the mean will help tank the Yankees.
BrianL - July 26, 2008
I'd be pretty pumped if we got Melky
how is his defense?
MFAN - July 26, 2008
Oh hey a S-hitting Jeremy Reed!
JI - July 26, 2008
If this is what it takes for us to stick with a cheap young CF next year, then so be it

BrianL - July 26, 2008
Yeah right, like that's happening.
Matthew - July 26, 2008
I look at his stats...
...and he seems like a bit of an OF Jose Lopez. 87 career OPS+ for Melky and 82 career OPS+ for Lopez. I wouldn’t be that surprised if Melky could be a league average hitter next year (the way that Lopez has been so far this year.) Melky’s also been pretty unlucky this year according to PrOPS.
ubelmann - July 26, 2008
Melky can sort of reach base OK.
JI - July 26, 2008
.305 OBP?
OlSalty - July 26, 2008

Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
That would be awesome.
BrianL - July 26, 2008
It'd be funny if Johjima told him.

It's not, but it's still a half-win or so improvement
Graham MacAree - July 26, 2008
Washburn has "been all Cy Young" the last six games.
kevin_ess - July 26, 2008
Well, Cy Young has been dead for several decades so great comparison

Man, funk that.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
They'd have to skip his start tomorrow
so WTF?
JI - July 26, 2008
So Melky is no great shakes or anything
but he’s been pretty unlucky this year, too. If he’s coming I’m pretty happy with that return for Wasburn.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
Wouldn't worry too much about this year
Melky’s Marcel coming into the year was .283/.350/.409, and even now it’s probably only around .270/.340/.400. He’d be a heck of a return.
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
That's good for a good fielding centerfielder
Last Fan Of Jose Lopez - July 26, 2008
We're getting Andy Pettit's chin dimple in return.
kevin_ess - July 26, 2008
Also, how's his defense in CF?
I haven’t seen him play much (obviously) and I wouldn’t know how to interpret defensive statistics even if they were useful.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
From what I can tell he's -5 < x < +5
Matthew, how’s his +/-?
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
Seems a touch below average out there from my limited exposure
Graham MacAree - July 26, 2008
I'm getting more and more excited about this.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
Is it worth being saddled with Igawa until 2011 to get him though?
OlSalty - July 26, 2008
If that's how the trade goes down, I can't change it.
I’d rather be happy about Washburn being gone and getting a useful player for him.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
If you want to be really optimistic about it...
The rumors that Igawa might want to go back and pitch in Japan, if true, could get the Mariners out of a chunk of Igawa’s contract.
ubelmann - July 26, 2008
I wouldn't count Melky in the fold until it's announced.
Matthew - July 26, 2008
But I wanna

Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008

Scrupio - July 26, 2008
Owed 13.5 million until 2011
OlSalty - July 26, 2008
Igawa's contract per Cot's contracts
Kei Igawa lhp
5 years/$20M (2007-11)
o $0.125M each for 180, 190, 200 & 210 IP
BrettJMiller - July 26, 2008
I bet the Yankees pick up most of that.
JI - July 26, 2008
If we can trade Washburn for more or less what we owe him right now in Igawa and Melky Cabrera, I think it's a win.
Especially because it comes in 4 million chunks instead of one big 10 million spot next year.
BrettJMiller - July 26, 2008
Agreed, but you think we could get someone to eat the whole thing with having to take a shitastic player in return.
JI - July 26, 2008
Another way this would be awesome
If the FSN rumor of Vidro/Washburn for Igawa/Melky is true then who cares about Igawa’s salary, we get out of what like 2-3 left of Vidro’s salary and all of Washburn’s?
That would be wonderful
BrettJMiller - July 26, 2008
Vidro's salary this year is irrelevant.
Matthew - July 26, 2008
Unless the remainder gets funneled to my bank account.
JI - July 26, 2008
Yeah, but Igawa is signed --> 2011.
Vidro’s gone after this year.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
His salary offsets Washburn's.
JI - July 26, 2008
We'd be freeing up like $16 million that we'd have to pay by 2009 to get Melky Cabrera and have to pay $16 million by 2011
BrettJMiller - July 26, 2008
I agree.
It’s not as big a win as it would be with, say Gardener or Melky on his own, but it’s a win nonetheless.
Aaron Campeau - July 26, 2008
I can't find Igawa on the Yankees' 40 man >:(

Christian - July 26, 2008
Melky Observations
Just me two cents on Melky.. i watch him daily here in NY. He’d be a great fourth outfielder given his ability at the corners to project as an above average defender. In CF he’s average, but has a big arm. Think he led the league in assists last yr. Therefore overall Id say he’s slight above average in CF. And from the left side, he’d be a solid player. He cant hit a lick from the right
DarkLou - July 26, 2008
He's marginally better lefthanded in his career.
JI - July 26, 2008
Looking at the last two yrs..
I think he’s bad from the right side.. no power at all, and his OBP has fallen drastically from that side..
He’s been a little unlucky from the right side. But still the numbers are hideous.
In 06, he was equally good. But these last two seasons, he cant do a thing from the right side
DarkLou - July 26, 2008
Small sample size
his BABIP is worse from the right side. I don’t know where to get LD% splits though.
JI - July 26, 2008
I imagine he's slightly better against righties, but not worthless against lefties
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2008
I as well.
JI - July 26, 2008
Fair point
His BABIP is crazy low. Just goin by observation as well. That he doesnt have power from the right side and his swing looks much more natural from the left side
DarkLou - July 26, 2008
Left handed swings typically are prettier than right handed.
JI - July 26, 2008

So, a quick thought on Igawa...
Is the thought he’s part of the deal that’s going down based solely on Olney’s report? Because if that’s the case, I’m inclined to believe he heard “Washburn to Yankees” and threw something together quickly, using the previously quashed Igawa rumor as a possibility.
It’s possible I’m being overly optimistic, I’m just trying to figure out why the M’s would say “No way in hell” and then cave a few days later.

Noone brought up yet...
That Washburn says he wants a little compensation or he will not wave his no-trade clause. Of course, he is a dick, and dicks do dickish things.
By compensation, I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. Apparently either team can give it to him, so I guess that scratches out a contract extension preference. Who knows.
Slica - July 26, 2008
To be fair, this is the reason no-trade clauses exist.
Players with limited NTCs rarely choose truly bad teams to put on the “limited” list. Rather, they choose GOOD teams that might want to trade for them sometime in the future, so that they can make some extra $$$ for waiving the clause. Washburn is well within his rights to ask for some extra bling here, it’s what he’s expected to do.

Yankees possibly considering alternatives
This story looks like it’s leaning pretty heavily on writer speculation, but the Yankees apparently may look elsewhere if the Washburn impasse continues. According to the Kansas City Star they could instead set their sights on a familiar name; the saber-inclined Brian Bannister.
Relevant quotes:
As for the possible return for Washburn should the deal get consummated with the Ms, it looks like the writer’s running off of the same info as we are…
So yeah…we’ll see if this will be the source of some gnashing of teeth and so on as the trading deadline approaches…
