With the Mariners now officially out of the Major League cellar for the first time in a month, it might be time to start preparing for life without the #1 pick. Because the more I've seen of this team over the past couple weeks, the less inclined I am to think that it has what it takes to keep up with the sorry piles of crap in Colorado, San Diego, and Washington. Those teams are just epically bad - true masters of their craft - and while the M's tried their hardest to pull away, they couldn't gain any separation, and now too many unlikely events would have to play out in order for this team to have a fighting chance at the big time. That's the problem you run into when you gradually start replacing bad players with decent ones.
But don't fret; it's not as awful as it sounds. There's still some upside here. You just have to look a little harder for it.
For one thing, we still have another year for draft-eligible high school and college prospects to emerge and bump Strasburg down the board. At the moment he probably has the brightest star in the country, but an awful lot can change between now and next June, and just because we probably won't end up with the first pick doesn't necessarily mean we screwed ourselves out of The Savior. And even if he does get picked by somebody else, we'll still be choosing high enough to come away with something neat. It's not like you happen upon too many draft years in which one player is far and away better than all of the rest. We'll be in a good position, Strasburg or no Strasburg. (For the record I do still want Strasburg.)
For another, let's think about this. Recently the Mariners have been giving a lot of exposure to lesser-proven guys who stand a chance of occupying a significant role in 2009. Jeremy Reed. Jeff Clement. RA Dickey. RRS. Brandon Morrow (sort of). Wlad for a little while. And with many of the veterans soon to be on their way out, that means we'll only be seeing more playing time going to possible pieces of the future. Is that a team you really want to see finish with the worst record in baseball? The better they do now, the better shape we're in when the front office tries to work out how to turn this into a contender for 2009. If we ditch the veterans and just completely tank, the front office will lose confidence in what it has and search for other solutions. But if we ditch the veterans and start winning more games, then in so doing guys like Reed and Clement will be answering a lot of pressing organizational questions. And that strikes me as being pretty damn important. Given an inverse relationship between the success of our younger players and our chances of drafting Stephen Strasburg, I'm going to side with the younger players, because those are the guys who would put us in the best position to succeed. And at the end of the day, all any of us really want is for the Mariners to be relevant again.
I love Stephen Strasburg. I've never met him in person and I've only seen footage of one single start, but I still love him to death. However, I love the Mariners more, and if they can start playing better baseball on the backs of their younger talent, then for me that's going to take precedence over my desire to draft a guy that looks like an elf. I want this team to be good and I want it to be good in a hurry, but I'd rather try to build around a team with potential than hope that Felix and a dude out of college can resuscitate what's clinically dead. I just like the odds a lot better.
Biggest Contribution: Miguel Cairo, +27.3%
Biggest Suckfest: Adrian Beltre, -17.9%
Most Important AB: Cairo double #2, +21.7%
Most Important Pitch: Lind homer, -21.0%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): +39.2%
Total Contribution by Lineup: +8.3%
Total Contribution by Opposition: +2.5%
(What is this chart?)
When I say "playing better baseball on the backs of their younger talent," winning because of Miguel Cairo and Jarrod Washburn is pretty much the exact opposite of what I mean. I demand that every last one of our wins be made possible by Ichiro and players under 30. Letting Miguel Cairo flip out doesn't accomplish anything.
I'm completely beat from last night, so all I'll say now is that that Rays/Sox series showcased some of the most exciting baseball I've seen in my life. Seriously, I implore you to start paying attention, if you aren't already. Their entire season has been like our game from last night repeating itself almost every day. If you only bandwagon one team in your life, let this be it. Trust me.

On the really big plus side, Washburn is making himself more attractive for the trade market.
Then again, that’s probably just a pipe dream.

He wouldn't be that difficult to trade
just don’t expect to get much of anything back.

It's just hard to see it happening because it would make me happy (even for nothing)...
This team NEVER makes moves that make me happy.

Up until Cairo's second double I was honestly enjoying following the Rays game on my phone more than watching the real game.
People gave me a funny look when I just shouted “YES! RAYS WIN!” after Varitek K’d.
It’s catching on too, some middle-aged woman didn’t give me a weird look while I said that but started talking to me about how much she liked the Rays, how she thought they were good for baseball, and how her and her husband were rooting them to take down the Sox and Yanks this year.
Good night at the ballpark.

Let's Go Rays!
I was out with a friend who I drink with about once a month tonight. We watched the highlights of the Rays sweeping the Sox (which I pretended to predict, having seen the game earlier) on the bar TV, and he said “dude, when I first met you, I thought you were batshit crazy because you told me the Devil Rays were the team to watch in a year or two. I’m never doubting you again.”
Thanks to the foresight LL helped provide, I look cool to my friends (even if he’s still convinced we should trade for Griffey… I can’t win every argument).
Go Rays!
thejew4u - July 3, 2008
Yea its funny how many people outside of baseball didn't see the Rays being as good as they are
You could’ve probably made a small fortune betting on them to win the division before the season starting. I am not sure what their odds of winning the division, but I know Oakland’s odds were 30:1 before the season started and look at them now. I am still kicking myself for not betting at least $20 on them.
Fin - July 3, 2008
I bet my friend $20 that the Rays would win 80.
He was thrilled and laughed at me after the bet.
Also, I am so fucking pissed that my other friend turned down a 1000-1 bet that the Rays would win the AL East. He said that I was too confident and that I must know something. :-(
dbroncos31 - July 3, 2008
Pretty much the same thing happened with me at work.

I’m doing pretty good lately.
JI - July 3, 2008
I know we all want Strasberg
But winning is never a bad thing. If we hadn’t won all those games last year Bavasi wouldn’t have had some unrealistic goal to shoot for this year and would probably still have a job.
The next thing we should be hoping for is that Strasberg hires Boras. That will guarentee a drop of a couple spots.
BS Nelly - July 3, 2008
If we hadn't won all those games last year Bavasi would've been fired and we'd still have AJ, GS52, and Tillman.
esoteric - July 3, 2008
and we'd still be
one of the worst teams in baseball….. and we’d still have a core of sucky veterans.
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
We wouldn't have Carlos Silva
Edgar for Pres - July 3, 2008
Yes we would
doubtfull any GM would have gone with 2 untested rookies in the rotation…. so someone like Silva would have been signed either way.
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
We still had HoRam.
Matthew - July 3, 2008
true
and that would guarantee we’d still be one of the worst teams in baseball…..
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
Wow, I guess now I'm pulling for the Nationals to win the STRAAAAASBUUURGG!! race
But the thing is, we already have tons of great young pitching in the system. We just need someone who can hit the damn ball past the infield.
esoteric - July 3, 2008
So let's say the M's continue winning with a younger, more improved team
Does Riggleman stay? I say he hasn’t been offensively bad. I’d keep him.
Gomez - July 3, 2008
nope...
this team needs a whole new house cleaning with a whole new approach….
that being said, he’ll probably stick as will Pelekoudas
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
A lot of the vets are probably gone next year either way
if that’s your primary concern.
Gomez - July 3, 2008
and new vets will be brought in
not enough talent in the minors to fill out the roster….
Those that will be gone are basically just Sexson, Vidro, and probably Cairo…..
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
Those are some pretty substantial exits
Jeff Sullivan - July 3, 2008
Well two of them are
Jeff Sullivan - July 3, 2008
Might as well hold on to Cairo.
JI - July 3, 2008
What?!?
Thingray - July 3, 2008

JI - July 3, 2008
they are only substantial
if they’re not replaced by aging veterans with long contracts….. and since we don’t have a capable first baseman in the minors.
MfaninAlaska - July 3, 2008
new gm, new gm, new gm, new gm, new gm, new gm, new gm
Matthew - July 3, 2008
JI - July 3, 2008
As a Seattle sports fan, I get to look forward to misery for eight constant months followed by a hopeful run dashed in more misery.
I cannot understand why people wouldn’t want to take a break from constantly expecting the worst. I’m not saying be optimistic, but this OMG the Mariners are going to trade Felix and Ichiro for Neifi Perez stuff gets especially tiring. With Bavasi, it was funnier because it was rooted (deeply) in a kernal of truthful expectation for what he might do. But Bavasi is gone now. Can’t we just hold off until they actually announce the new GM before wallowing in future despair?
Matthew - July 3, 2008

I’ll put on the rose colored glasses for the rest of the year.
