| Strasburg Standings | ||||||||
The good news is that the Mariners, being the only AL team represented here, have a better chance at losing games in the second half than their NL brethern simply by dint of playing the harder schedule. And the Ms second half schedule is a tougher version of their first half, but they're going to have to take advantage of that and start rolling over to these stronger teams. They can begin tonight by having Ichiro take Riggelman up on his offer for a day off. Do it for Strasburg Ichiro.

I have a bad feeling the Clement and Reed are going to sink this ship.
Vidro is going to have to man up and bear down big time to make this happen.
JI - July 5, 2008
He's going to have to keep on batting clean up to help us.
Fin - July 5, 2008
Sexson, Vidro, and Batista could help us do this easily
But management is against the idea of having all three of them in a game at the same time.
ThundaPC - July 5, 2008
Imagine if there was actually a Strasburg Ichiro hybrid.
Would he be named Felix?

Ichilix
lyleleander - July 5, 2008
Felichiro sounds more fitting for discussion around these parts.

Sounds like a pedophile.

This is the exact opposite of last year.
No one thought that team was good enough to get into the playoffs, but they got just close enough to fool everyone into having false hope. I don’t think many people thought this team was the worst in the majors, but they’ve been bad enough so far to make everyone salivate over Strasburg.
We literally cannot win for losing.

How big is the dropoff after Strasburg?
So I can be appropriately displeased with the M’s having a pick between 2 and 5.
Sports on a Schtick - July 5, 2008
Supposedly it's a very good draft class of college pitchers.
Also there’s a 2B named Ackley from UNC who’s really good.
dbroncos31 - July 5, 2008
Weaver to the Indians
Now there was someone who could’ve helped us chase down Strasburg.
ThundaPC - July 5, 2008
I hate to say it
But Washington is really really bad. -119 before the all-star break? That is epic.
DAMellen - July 5, 2008
Damnit, We need to come through in the clutch!
Where is your team pride, Mariners? Take that third strike and smile a little more, bobble
that routine grounder with a little more grit, groove that 3-0 fastball that much more up and in the wheelhouse.
The funny thing is, amongst all the Princess Willie, Vidro and Cairo slamming we’ve been doing, I wonder if the team management really isn’t just a few steps ahead of us and are actually right there with us, setting sail together on the USS Strasburg Goldenthong.
lyleleander - July 5, 2008
Sometimes the questionable line ups ran out kind of lead to that possibility.
Fin - July 5, 2008
We've had questionable line-ups since 2004. Raul Ibanez batted 3rd or 4th early last year despite his futility.
Willie Bloomquist had ~250 ABs in 2005 and 2006 while not platooning in CF and it goes on and on.
Susheel Ramasahayam - July 5, 2008
Actually
Ichiro can help us even more by going 1 for 5, jogging out grounders, taking plays off with RISP and not diving. If he wants to pad his stats, he can wait until we’re down 5 runs and then go to town, as he often did in 2004-2005.
Gomez - July 5, 2008
Rec'd for snark.
Susheel Ramasahayam - July 5, 2008
needs more Vidro, Cairo and Batista

So now
Can these standings replace the AL West standings in the sidebar now?
mariners124m - July 5, 2008
WOOO!! GO WASHINGTON!! STRAAASBUUURGG!
God it hurts to root for these two shitty teams.
esoteric - July 5, 2008
The irony is, the Nats don't even *need* pitching...their farm system is stacked with it, Rays-style.
They need bats, bats, bats, bats.
esoteric - July 5, 2008
Well if someone beats us, hope it's Washington and they take a bat
seattlebruin - July 5, 2008
Side note...watching the New York/Boston game
Varitek might be the worst starting catcher (offensively) in all of baseball
kentroyals5 - July 5, 2008
Johjima/Clement
are almost 100 points below him in OPS though.
Zu Long - July 5, 2008
I don't consider either to have locked down a starting gig anymore.
kentroyals5 - July 5, 2008
Sounds pretty convenient to me. :-P
Zu Long - July 5, 2008
I like how you assume I forget about the abortion at the plate that is Kenji Johjima
And how the hell did Varitek get into the All-Star game..guh
kentroyals5 - July 6, 2008
Not anymore Clement is not.
