As a result, we do way more dicking around with stupid stuff than we did last year or any year when the M’s are okay. I could be wrong but I suspect that our main problems would simply be bandwagoners if this team had competed.

For example:

last year when I read/posted in GTs, I was only concerned about the team. I wanted to see other people’s opinions and see how everyone reacted to this or that. This year, because most of us don’t care about the team nearly as much as we used to, I look forward to some hilarious comedy in the GTs. The problem with this is we get some GTs that are fantasticly funny and then we get others that try to hard to be funny and cross the line/are stupid/are annoying/all of the above.

But I think another explanation is live-posting. It was much harder/more annoying to post last year and now anything that pops into your head can be posted instantly. Less thought is required; more dumbness appears.
