In a rush, no time to write. The long and short of it:
- Dickey wasn't all that great, but - much like RRS a night ago - he was far better than his final line. 10 GB, 6 FB, 2 LD, 2 IFF. Missed a decent number of bats, too. The big problem was that too often he lost sight of his spots, but shit happens when you're a knuckleballer. I am displeased but not discouraged.
- As a general rule of thumb, I am against message benchings. Especially when the player getting message benched is the only player up to that point to provide any offense. If Riggleman had a problem with Lopez's effort last night, why was he in the starting lineup today? If Riggleman had a problem with Lopez's effort today, why was he pulled instead of Jeff Clement, who was a nightmare both at and behind the plate? I've said it before and I'll say it again: once you're slapped with the "lazy" tag, it's almost impossible to remove. Lopez didn't deserve to get sat down, but he should probably get used to things like this, because his little slip-ups are forever going to be viewed with a magnifying glass.
- Speaking of which - which is it, Riggleman? Is this team just fine when it comes to the little things, or do they make enough little mistakes to warrant the occasional message benching? You said you wanted this team to hit better and pitch better. Jose Lopez hit a home run and got benched before his next at bat. I would appreciate it if you would reconcile these two things for me.
- At one point, Rocco Baldelli made a sliding catch in right field to rob a Mariner of a hit. If you think it's difficult to convince yourself to lay out for a baseball, imagine being in Baldelli's shoes and knowing that you probably won't recover from the exertion for eight or nine weeks. That better be a really important baseball.
- It is, however, awesome to see Baldelli back in the Majors. He'd make for a way more inspiring story than Josh Hamilton if he (A) could play more often, and (B) were better. I tell you what, Tampa Bay's had a lot of players over the years, but few of them have been boring.
- Rays with Longoria: 1 run, 1 game
Rays without Longoria: 24 runs, 3 games
They are good and we are bad. They also now own leads of 4.5 games over Boston and 8.5 games over New York. I wonder which would feel better for them - a September that comes down to the wire, or a September devoid of any semblance of drama because they already buried their competition. This is incredible.
- Do we have any reason to believe that Willie Ballgame is a better player than Tuglett? That emphatic blown hamstring last night meant a lot of things, but I'm not convinced it made us worse. Here's to a 2009 with a new little pipsqueak. The incumbent has gotten a little too big for his britches.
Biggest Contribution: Jose Lopez, +8.7%
Biggest Suckfest: RA Dickey, -28.7%
Most Important AB: Clement DP, -10.2%
Most Important Pitch: Aybar homer, -18.2%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -29.3%
Total Contribution by Lineup: -20.7%
Total Contribution by Opposition: 0.0%
(What is this chart?)
That was a shitty game. Decent company though.

Excellent.
Aaron Campeau - August 10, 2008
You guys gave us one of the most exciting games of the season last night.
R.J. Anderson - August 10, 2008
I'd call Tuglett an upgrade
Gomez - August 10, 2008
Can Tuglett play the outfield?
BrianL - August 10, 2008
Oops
One career start in the minors, in LF… though that WAS in Tacoma.
Still though, for 2009… punt Cairo, get a 4th OF, and you’re even.
Gomez - August 10, 2008
I can live with that.
BrianL - August 10, 2008
Cairo is still on the team?
Fin - August 10, 2008
In 5 years of minor league ball
Tuglett’s OPS is .802, and his league’s collective OPSs are .764.
Doing the same thing for Princess Willie, you get .712 and .754. Tuglett is only a year older than Willie was once he got his MLB job, and I’d argue is considerably better as a hitter.
Yeah, I think Tuglett’s better. In fact, if Tuglett’s defense was ~league-average, I would argue you could trade Lopez and assuming Tuglett could deliver .270/.350/.370 numbers (a considerable falloff from his AAA power/OBP), you wouldn’t lose anything, because Lopez is so poor in the field. Yes, you run the risk of having Jose Lopez turn into Carlos Guillen mk II if he develops some more, but you could probably make a deal that nets you more than Ramontiago.
eponymous_coward - August 10, 2008
Jose Lopez is no Carlos Guillen.
PositivePaul - August 11, 2008
He's much, much better
seattlebruin - August 11, 2008
Well, depends on what your definition of "He" is...
Carlos Guillen >>>>>>>> Jose Lopez.
Carlos always displayed far more plate discipline than Jose Lopez. I wasn’t at all surprised to see Guillen bust out after being given to the Tigers.
My irrational love for Carlos Guillen >>>> my irrational hatred for Jose Lopez. I’ve never once liked Jose Lopez, and always wondered why the heck people had any sort of excitement for him whatsoever. I’ve always liked Carlos Guillen, and wanted him to stay healthy so he could really become an asset for the M’s. I started my blogging career (both as an author and a commenter) around the time he was traded away. Sorta like when I’d just started my serious M’s fandom around the time Spike Owen was traded for Rey Quinones…
PositivePaul - August 11, 2008
Spike Owen, Carlos Guillen, George Sherrill ...
I’m sensing a trend here.

It was actually the 2002-2003 Buccaneers.

Also, I think I took too much Lorazepam. All the text from the entries is floating around. They’re not anchored down to anything. Lookout Landing is a sea, and our comments are adrift in it dude.
Frosty Raptor - August 10, 2008
Trying to reason with commenters of Baker's blog = pointless.
Mariner John - August 10, 2008
I had that same problem trying to reason with commenters on the fox sports website why the Bedard trade was a bad idea at the time of the trade.
Everyone said I didn’t make anything sense, and that Bavasi was finally doing the right thing (“Get ‘er done Bavasi!”). I just find it funny now how everyone is now saying how bad the trade was and how Bedard is a pussy and we gave up too much for him. I have to defend Bedard, saying he is a good pitcher and that he is doing the right thing by pulling himself out of the game early. Weird how things change.
