Lookout Landing

45-73

In a rush, no time to write. The long and short of it:

  • Dickey wasn't all that great, but - much like RRS a night ago - he was far better than his final line. 10 GB, 6 FB, 2 LD, 2 IFF. Missed a decent number of bats, too. The big problem was that too often he lost sight of his spots, but shit happens when you're a knuckleballer. I am displeased but not discouraged.

  • As a general rule of thumb, I am against message benchings. Especially when the player getting message benched is the only player up to that point to provide any offense. If Riggleman had a problem with Lopez's effort last night, why was he in the starting lineup today? If Riggleman had a problem with Lopez's effort today, why was he pulled instead of Jeff Clement, who was a nightmare both at and behind the plate? I've said it before and I'll say it again: once you're slapped with the "lazy" tag, it's almost impossible to remove. Lopez didn't deserve to get sat down, but he should probably get used to things like this, because his little slip-ups are forever going to be viewed with a magnifying glass.

  • Speaking of which - which is it, Riggleman? Is this team just fine when it comes to the little things, or do they make enough little mistakes to warrant the occasional message benching? You said you wanted this team to hit better and pitch better. Jose Lopez hit a home run and got benched before his next at bat. I would appreciate it if you would reconcile these two things for me.

  • At one point, Rocco Baldelli made a sliding catch in right field to rob a Mariner of a hit. If you think it's difficult to convince yourself to lay out for a baseball, imagine being in Baldelli's shoes and knowing that you probably won't recover from the exertion for eight or nine weeks. That better be a really important baseball.

  • It is, however, awesome to see Baldelli back in the Majors. He'd make for a way more inspiring story than Josh Hamilton if he (A) could play more often, and (B) were better. I tell you what, Tampa Bay's had a lot of players over the years, but few of them have been boring.

  • Rays with Longoria: 1 run, 1 game
Rays without Longoria: 24 runs, 3 games

They are good and we are bad. They also now own leads of 4.5 games over Boston and 8.5 games over New York. I wonder which would feel better for them - a September that comes down to the wire, or a September devoid of any semblance of drama because they already buried their competition. This is incredible.

  • Do we have any reason to believe that Willie Ballgame is a better player than Tuglett? That emphatic blown hamstring last night meant a lot of things, but I'm not convinced it made us worse. Here's to a 2009 with a new little pipsqueak. The incumbent has gotten a little too big for his britches.

That was a shitty game. Decent company though.

It's uncanny isn't it?
I've been told that I occasionally share a resemblance to Michael Cera
I can kinda' see it.
And I thought my friends were just messing with me
I understand now.

And, whoa.

My reaction today at noon:

Oh hey it is Sunday! I could listen to the M’s game without wrecking my sleep schedule! . . .Actually, I just don’t really care enough to be bothered.

"Slow Brain"

Excellent.

You guys gave us one of the most exciting games of the season last night.
I'd call Tuglett an upgrade
Can Tuglett play the outfield?
Oops

One career start in the minors, in LF… though that WAS in Tacoma.

Still though, for 2009… punt Cairo, get a 4th OF, and you’re even.

I can live with that.
Cairo is still on the team?
In 5 years of minor league ball

Tuglett’s OPS is .802, and his league’s collective OPSs are .764.

Doing the same thing for Princess Willie, you get .712 and .754. Tuglett is only a year older than Willie was once he got his MLB job, and I’d argue is considerably better as a hitter.

Yeah, I think Tuglett’s better. In fact, if Tuglett’s defense was ~league-average, I would argue you could trade Lopez and assuming Tuglett could deliver .270/.350/.370 numbers (a considerable falloff from his AAA power/OBP), you wouldn’t lose anything, because Lopez is so poor in the field. Yes, you run the risk of having Jose Lopez turn into Carlos Guillen mk II if he develops some more, but you could probably make a deal that nets you more than Ramontiago.

Jose Lopez is no Carlos Guillen.
He's much, much better
Well, depends on what your definition of "He" is...

Carlos Guillen >>>>>>>> Jose Lopez.

Carlos always displayed far more plate discipline than Jose Lopez. I wasn’t at all surprised to see Guillen bust out after being given to the Tigers.

My irrational love for Carlos Guillen >>>> my irrational hatred for Jose Lopez. I’ve never once liked Jose Lopez, and always wondered why the heck people had any sort of excitement for him whatsoever. I’ve always liked Carlos Guillen, and wanted him to stay healthy so he could really become an asset for the M’s. I started my blogging career (both as an author and a commenter) around the time he was traded away. Sorta like when I’d just started my serious M’s fandom around the time Spike Owen was traded for Rey Quinones…

Spike Owen, Carlos Guillen, George Sherrill ...

I’m sensing a trend here.

The Ryas have the laziest outfield in history.
New keyboard fixed everything huh?
Not my computer.
Okay. Someone asked this at softball yesterday, so I have to ask you

Explain the significance of your sig.

.
Maddon chose an odd T-shirt slogan for this year, "9=8". He wanted not just to dismiss conventional thought but also emphasize that nine players playing nine innings could mean one of eight postseason berths.

Link

That's the simplified version.
Well the right fielder was practically falling asleep out there
And this is officially the best Tampa Bay team ever.

Neat.

Wrong...at least so far...

The 2001-02 Buccaneers and the 2003-04 Lightening say, “hi”. Championships baby.

It was actually the 2002-2003 Buccaneers.
Yeah I always screw up NFL years. Stupid season carrying over 1 month.
Also, if you count Arena Football, the Storm probably have the best claim.

But it’s Arena Football so.

Testaverdemania!!
Fun fact: Vinny Testaverde holds the single season record for interceptions with 35

A record he set with… Tampa Bay (1988).

That's like Yuni committing 40 errors
Woo, for Strasburg and the Rays!

Also, I think I took too much Lorazepam. All the text from the entries is floating around. They’re not anchored down to anything. Lookout Landing is a sea, and our comments are adrift in it dude.

Trying to reason with commenters of Baker's blog = pointless.
I had that same problem trying to reason with commenters on the fox sports website why the Bedard trade was a bad idea at the time of the trade.

Everyone said I didn’t make anything sense, and that Bavasi was finally doing the right thing (“Get ‘er done Bavasi!”). I just find it funny now how everyone is now saying how bad the trade was and how Bedard is a pussy and we gave up too much for him. I have to defend Bedard, saying he is a good pitcher and that he is doing the right thing by pulling himself out of the game early. Weird how things change.

What a silly thing to try to do
Well this was before I discovered LL

and USSMariner doesn’t go at a fast enough pace, so I guess I looked in the wrong places for more discussion.

Those are like the YouTube comments of Mariners blogs
"I think Beltre stinks because he's an easy out and only gets hits off of idiot pitchers who don't know how to pitch him"

/head asplode

Everyone knows Beltre needs to aim where he hits the ball better.

Duh.

Have you met Logie yet?
Looks like Faceplant and Sounders were the main retards.
You obviously haven't met Logie yet.
No.

I’m no longer going to post there so I doubt I will. Good luck.

I thought Resin Isn't Cheating and Mr. X were the main retards

And I can’t figure out why Adam is still a regular poster there.

I've just realised that Resin Isn't Cheating's handle is actually a shot at Derek.

God I’m slow sometimes.

I love how bitter Logie is over Derek's book.
I didn't think about that until you just said that

But I don’t understand why he hates DMZ so much, he seems to gripe about him on a regular basis.

He's shifted his focus over to Dave lately.
Why does anyone care what he has to think

and why do people keep talking about the times posters

Sometimes people like feeling superior.
I don't get that chance very often around here.
Sometimes people like talking about them selves in third person
Feeling superior isn't a 'sometimes' thing for me.
I wish I were you almost as much as I wish I were Jeff.
Yea being Jeff would be pretty cool

Young bachelor with a good job living in a city that is good weather all year, not to mention really smart about baseball and has inside connections with the Mariners.

My life pales in comparison.
Same here.

But he does serve as a good role model.

Just check out his school of parenting.
And no BRMC tickets for the 7th
And Jeff is old
and isn't he like 23?
I consider that old
Well then hand me my walker, whippersnapper
Turns 23 on October 18th
I thought he was 25-26 based on the Recap in Pictures thread.

Then I saw the picture from the start of the ‘07 (I think) season. At that point I was just confused.

I think maybe Matthew is 25, right?
29 on February 18
You lie a lot about how good at stalking you are
I'm 26 and he laughed at me for being old.
BRMC?
A band he pays more attention to than the Mariners
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
I would like to sock you
There are times around here when I think you could found the First Church of Jeff or something

and have at least twenty followers right off the bat

Good enough for Jesus, good enough for me
The Book of Jeff changed my life.

If you’ll excuse me, I need to go punt a cat, kill a clown, and try some stuffed crust pizza.

Jeff 3:16 says nobody cares about your fantasy team
3:14

someone needs a Book of Jeff scripture refresher…

Here's a gallon of water. I'd like some beer.
Throw in some hops, barley, and time, and I'm up to the task

I’m a miracle worker!

It's a Christmas miracle!
Jeffmas
It's the most wonderful time of the year.
I believe the appropriate course of action at Jeffmas

is for your favorite baseball team to spend $48M on a FA starting pitcher

Does this make Graham, Matthew and Dave Cameron the Three Wiseasses?
Something to that effect
They come bearing gifts

of tRA, UZR and WPA.

I heard that Jeff can walk on beer
This begs for a photoshop.
This was one ridiculously shameful Jeff love fest.
This is why people break the rules

zomg

Rawr
This comment just made me giggle a bit...
Did you think of it with the accent?
Rauwr
You could always fly up here again...
I can totally afford that
Bike trip!
Fuck Seattle. Plzen. Let's go.
$700 from Seattle one-way.
Sold
$1400 to get back.
Why would I need to get back?
One day this isn't going to be a joke.

And then you’ll all laugh. Except you won’t, because it won’t be a joke. Though you may want to do one of those half chuckles people do when they are unsure how to react to a situation. Oh yeah, that’s right. You’ll half chuckle one day.

I won't because I'll probably be there too
Won't you be too busy obsessing

over how much more money you need until you buy your Aston Martin?

If I live homeless and foodless for 2 years...
Can you survive on office coffee alone?
I think Robert is trying a related experiment with Mt. Dew.
Mt Dew is also handy in bedroom survival
You still have to deal with this issue

http://www.shortsupport.org/News/0112.html

He's so tiny.
I bet he felt uncomfortable sitting between McLovin and me.

We cast a tall shadow

This joke got 10x funnier
Oh shit then I'll be running this place

Prepare for disaster….

Who's going to be your replacement-level Graham?
Geoff Baker
I guarantee my VORG is better than Baker's.
Beware the Beer Hall Putsch

in this case, a putsch directed remotely from a beer hall in Plzen, and having nothing whatsoever to do with HitlZOMGNOPOLITICS, and this one will not fail.

Who’s a part of the junta/rebels/military command? No one knows. Yet.

It reads better than it is
Now you're just being modest
The good life never feels as good as its description
I love it how people automatically think Jeff is single unless they know otherwise
This is why you aren't allowed to hang out around Felix,
I can't believe that card you carry hasn't turned green yet

I rec’d it

FYI, that's not actually Faceplant.

Faceplant is one of the smarter posters there.

Indeed.

I’ve given myself a break from Baker’s blog because I felt my brain shrinking, (I’m Chip1010 over there, because I’m afraid of the aliens tracking all my screen names), but there are still some smart people commenting on Baker’s blog. I recall Faceplant being one of them.

I should mention that this "break" has been about six months.
So it's an imposter or he just had a stupid moment?
The benching of Jose Lopez was the worst managerial decision this season

and it was blatantly racist

Please don't do that

you have no idea what Riggleman’s motives were.

Meta joke is way meta
haven't slept well all weekend

so whoooooosh.

I've earned the right to play the race card for my fellow people
Hawaiian solidarity!
This better not become a regular thing
I'm still unhappy with you for breaking my inspect user button
Does this technically make him unbannable now?
I quickly figured out another way of banning him
Looks like I'm going to have to stumble upon a harder name

”`~@Ian??” perhaps?

I will bring back puns
We should have used this as a opportunity to discuss memes for next year.

Stupid baseball talk.

I was going to try the heisman pose or the neo pose on the way back to the ferry but then I realized you just look like a goddamn retard
Or you might get run over by a car
But stories!
I can't imagine you on an airplane
When I get off in Pullman I like to sing "Push it to the limit" as loud as I can.
I don't know if I like where this is going...
Hulettle bastards will feel my wrath
Real Hugetle Ian
I don't get it
I think he was going for "subtle."
I've been waiting for a chance to say "thats lastFANofjoselopezTASTIC!
I think I just vomited a bit.
Thats how you know its a pun!
The good puns are the ones that just depress people
After that last one I think I'm going to need to sit down with my therapist.
Was it really that Lahairibble?
Sorry I lost track of this sub thread

I was reading the tortoise and lahair.

I was talking about a different LaHair.
I figured out the workaround

You can too.

Fuck you Riggleman

Fuck you. This is absolutely retarded on so many levels. So what if his defense lacked or has been even worse than usual the last few games.

I dont see you pinch hitting for that bald headed gimpy legged gecko in LF. What about that? Huh? HUH? How about Silva? Where is the penalty for him to threaten his teammates? What are you going to do about that fat ape ass for face piece of suckshit?! FUCK YOU. You bench the one guy who has been a bright spot for our offense of punchless aggression.

Talk about head up ass. I cant wait to see your ass get canned and I can only hope you can stick a candle up your ass so you can read the pink slip clearly.

AHHHHHHH this pisses me off. And this makes up for my lack of appearances and/or GTE from the last few games.

Raul's been beating the shit out of the ball lately
Sorry y'all had to be sacrificed for the cause, but this should make you feel better

Knowing that we helped the Rays put distance between them and the Red Sox is all the comfort we need.

Anything else was an added bonus.

I'd really like to get Strasburg though
I know it's still 2+ days away

but I’m really excited for Felix Day in Anaheim!

I forgot to mention that Jose Lopez's homerun was the worst homerun I have ever seen.
