It turns out, Silva made a between-starts mechanical adjustment. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, an ex-sinkerballer himself, felt Silva was squeezing the ball too hard. So, instead of holding his hands up near his chest as he began his windup -- which Silva felt caused his arms to press together and his fingers to grip the ball tighter -- he held them at waist level tonight.
Over his seven starts since, Carlos Silva has thrown 35.1 innings and allowed 61 baserunners, 28% line drives, and 32 runs. His tRA over that span is 6.84. Since going on about his little mechanical adjustment, Silva has performed like one of the worst pitchers in the league.
If you're looking for a new place to put your hands, Carlos, I suggest your throat.

(What is this chart?)
When I was a kid, my love for this team was unconditional. There is no surer sign that that sort of innocence and idealized loyalty is gone and never coming back than the act of rooting against your own player, and tonight I got a kick out of coming home and finding out how poorly Silva pitched. I guess that makes me a bitter old man.
I do not like this team. I like the idea of this team, but I do not like this team.

At least he's not padding his stats.

Dammit, you found a picture with the score overlay.
I looked last night for a while, then got lazy.

Holy shit Silva sucks.

"Finishing strong" and "put up their numbers" -- bummer
I completely agree with Carlos. I’m sick of those Mariners who insist on finishing strong and putting up their numbers. Don’t they know what they’re doing? They need to be punished. Better to follow the Silva Model and try to do your best — none of those strong finishes or the putting up of those numbers.

I can't believe that ass-hat is going to cost us another $36 million.
For love of Christ, please somebody save us.

More than that, this season isn't over. He hasn't...-ahem-...earned...all of this season's $12 million yet.
I decided to play Madden after the start of disaster inning so I have no idea how bad it went, but I kind of wonder if for the rest of the year the fielders will dog it every time Silva starts since he called them out. I know I would. He deserves to give up as many runs as possible.

As surprising as it is to hear myself say this, I really hope they do.
Fuck that hypocritical piece of shit. I am so disgusted by this team right now.

Perhaps he can follow the Jarrod Washburn plan?
That is, our best hope is that he pitches out of his mind with a shiny, shiny ERA during July 09 so we can trade him at the deadline to a contender for salary relief.
This scenario assumes that he is capable of getting lucky for a month and our FO would be smart enough to trade him for salary relief in that situation. Given an infinite universe I like to think this is possible.
It is also possible that rally primates might take wing from my rectum.
PDXTai - August 16, 2008
But if he posts a shiny shiny ERA we will think he has value and won't trade him
we never trade good players especially if their goodness is unsustainable fluky goodness remember?
