This season has suddenly gotten a lot more interesting
Instead of not giving a crap about 5/9th’s of our lineup and most of our rotation, suddenly we have Jeffie, Wlad, Reed, Dickey, and soon RRS and Morrow to watch and it’s pretty fun to monitor their progress (and I guess, to a much lesser extent, LaHair too). Even if they don’t pan out, it’s so much more entertaining to find out what you’ve got in them than to watch people who are proven to be terrible day after day after day playing meaningless baseball. Because with this fresh blood in the lineup the baseball isn’t meaningless anymore, it has great meaning for the future of the club, and that just makes it a million times more entertaining.
It almost makes you want to care about this team again.
OlSalty - August 6, 2008
Amen amen AMEN!!
It is good to see a team that might actually havce a brighter future…
Happy to hear (earlier this week) about Joh’s role being lessened…then seeing Jeffie get playing time is great since i am a proud Jeffie fan
We could actually have an interesting lineup that wont make u want to roll over in agony over half the time! I don’t expect EVERY one of above names to become “aces” or “all-stars” but at least we can have some fun rooting for them!
Smith18 - August 6, 2008
Woops that was supposed to be a "reply" to OISalty's post
Smith18 - August 6, 2008
I know Morrow'

Fail - stupid enter key
SethGrandpa - August 6, 2008
As I was saying...I know Morrow's starting tommorow but how cool would it be for RRS & Morrow to tag team a start (RRS pitches 5, Morrow 4)?
That said I know it’s probably a bad idea to mention “tag team” and RRS in the same sentence. Jeff and NOLA will probably get all hot and bothered.
SethGrandpa - August 6, 2008
Uhh.
That’s not their roles. BUT, you know what would be cool, if Morrow and RRS become our 1-2 punch one day (after Felix ditches the Mariners for being to stupid to extend him).
Fin - August 6, 2008
Or we could have a sick 1-2-3 punch because
my mind will not allow me to conceive of Felix leaving. And we have a bunch of very high upside arms in the low minors. If a couple of them pan out, our new GM won’t have to rely on the shitty FA pitchers anymore (although he shouldn’t anyway)
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
Felix will be a Mariner for many years.
I know this because I have crystal balls.
kevin_ess - August 6, 2008
Make sure you wear a good cup when playing baseball.
Crystal shatters easily
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
We should probably stick to fighting over RRS rather than any sort of tag team situation.
Kirsten Schlewitz - August 6, 2008
Vidro looks a bit like Loafie in that older pic of him.
Fin - August 6, 2008
Then over time Canada gradually turned Vidro white.
Alex B - August 6, 2008
I don't ever want to see that face again...
TroutMask - August 6, 2008
That first picture is Loafie and Felix combined. I swear.
kentroyals5 - August 6, 2008
LOPEZ
Look at him bailing out the team. Look at that big line.
Slica - August 6, 2008
.348/.384/.551 since the All-Star break
has hit safely in 26 of past 28 games
seattlebruin - August 6, 2008
I love that we all seemed to forget how young he is.
I basically wrote him off after last year, forgetting that he was 23.
Hopefully his Fielding Bible +/- this year is flawed for some reason.
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
I'm not sure I can possibly accept him going from average-above average to awful in one season
especially when individual fielding metrics aren’t as advanced as hitting metrics yet. On the other hand, after watching Yuni… anything is possible :(
seattlebruin - August 6, 2008
Yeah.
RZR has him as 16/20 MLB qualifying 2B, but he’s #3 in OOZ (behind Utley and Roberts). The Baseball Analysts had him slightly below average (-2 runs or so). I feel like he can’t be that bad; I’d peg him at average-slightly below average based on what I’ve seen. And if this is his real bat, then he seems to be a .770 OPS guy who gives you ~slightly below average D while cheap. That is an asset.
I wish he was the SS and Yuni was the 2B. That way we could easily replace Yuni (Hudson, Ellis, etc). Instead we will either have to find a cheap okay guy at SS (Cedeno) or get in a bidding war with the Sawx for Furcal. And that’s assuming we even recognize that Yuni is a problem and do something about it.
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
I have to think that even the scouts have noticed Yuni's range has vanished.
The team can’t be completely oblivious to it.
BrianL - August 6, 2008
I really hope so.
But if we knew he was slipping, don’t you think we would have tried to sell him to other teams when he still had good value? The Dodgers would have given up something shiny for him; but from all accounts we never really discussed him with any teams.
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
That's the problem with rooting for a stupid team
Ever notice how it’s always the smart teams ripping off the stupid ones, not the stupid ones ripping off one another [cough] Dodgers [cough]?
seattlebruin - August 6, 2008
Yeah, maybe our new gm new gm new gm new gm
can trade Yuni to someone this off-season and get Furcal or something. Otherwise we will play the Limbo with Yuni’s range. (How Low Can You Go?)
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
Interestingly, this may the one case where there is a floor
his name is Derek Jeter
seattlebruin - August 6, 2008
Watch Jeter in 2010
that’ll redefine his floor.
pdb - August 6, 2008
Yeah.
I think Derek Jeter in 2012-2014 would be the Mariana Trench of SS defense.
craig3410 - August 6, 2008
And I, for one, can't wait
because I’m really looking forward to seeing if the fan reaction to that is more Knoblauchian or Mattinglyesque. I’d love it if they turned on him like a feral dog on an injured squirrel, but I have a feeling they won’t.
pdb - August 6, 2008
My boss still says he's the best defensive shortstop in the MLB.
Then I laugh at him and start repeating “under a diving Jeter” over and over until he makes me leave.
Faux - August 6, 2008
I always wanted to open an Italian restaurant when I lived in Hartford
just so that every day, my daily special could be “Pasta Diving Jeter”.
pdb - August 6, 2008
I will give you a Rec
to help get you started
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
It's amazing how many fans ignore any sort of analysis and rely purely on their "feelings."
I’m so glad I found USSM and LL.
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
Its funny how THT
has him as the second best shortstop in baseball (based on RZR) for qualified shortstops….. which means he’s probably going to win yet another gold glove… uggggh.
MfaninAlaska - August 6, 2008
Pathetic # of OOZ plays
(but better than Yuni’s…damn). Justin Inaz’s rankings that turn both in- and out-of-zone plays into a total number of runs saved would be handy in this situation….
marc w - August 6, 2008
Wouldn't the Mariana Trench be a good shortstop?
It would catch everything.
Llewdor - August 6, 2008
Poor arm.
Aaron Campeau - August 6, 2008
Good range, though.
pdb - August 6, 2008
EspaƱa is better
Gomez - August 6, 2008
I think...
Pelakoudas and other baseball people know this.
Somehow, I doubt HowChuck know this.
rtang - August 6, 2008
Hmmm, interestingly, post ASB seems like he's not hitting the ball as hard
64 BIP, 10 LD (15%), 23 FB, 31 GB
For the past 28 games though, 106 BIP, 20 LD, 37 FB, 49 GB
So in conclusion, he may just be getting a little BABIP lucky right now, but his HR/FB is only standing at 6.4% and I think he has more power than that so yeah… for whatever that’s worth
seattlebruin - August 6, 2008
I love this team again.
Yes, yes I said it. I don’t care that it’s imperfect. I still love it.
Kirsten Schlewitz - August 6, 2008
Yeah, it's like that puppy in the shelter
with one eye and three legs and it’s drooling on itself and you think “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww, poor thing!”
craig3410 - August 6, 2008
And you take it home because the puppy does still have three of its legs.
Kirsten Schlewitz - August 6, 2008
So Joba Chamberlain is almost surely headed to the D/L
and is surely headed off to see James Andrews for a second opinion after getting his MRI results back on his shoulder.
Matthew - August 6, 2008
And Geoff Baker will surely cite this as why taking Morrow out of the pen is a bad idea.
Goose - August 6, 2008
Hope you enjoy pinstripes, Wash.
BrianL - August 6, 2008
Please please please.
Faux - August 6, 2008
Has he been placed on waivers yet?
Thingray - August 6, 2008
That's good and suck
Jeff Sullivan - August 6, 2008
Washburn to waivers nowwwwwww
OlSalty - August 6, 2008
I hate the Yanks (and despise Chamberlain the player)
but I know how Yankee fans feel. I actually feel bad for him.
For a fantastic time, check out the gamethread from April 18, 2007. At the time, the word funny was not in anyone’s vocab, but the reactions are kind of hilarious in hindsight.

Haha awesome.
I was at the game and that was exactly my emotion “graph”
dbroncos31 - August 6, 2008
That line up list looks so primitive.
