We'll see if this just turns out to be another example of Mariner PR spin but for now, let us indulge in the possibility that Erik Bedard's shoulder is actually structually intact. As Geoff Baker mentions, that puts his recovery timetable at around the six month mark, or late March.
Given Bedard's general fragility, I wouldn't expect him to hit that timeline, but it certainly does elevate the issue of whether or not to offer him arbitration to a new level. With a labrum tear, that would have been a no doubt 12 month recovery and an easy no-tender decision. Now? I think you have to seriosuly consider retaining Bedard and beyond the contractual obligations, what does this mean for 2009? Is a Felix, Bedard, Morrow, Rowland-Smith, Silva rotation back to being a possibility as early as May?

I'm not sure how to handle this whole "good news" thing...

This is like a kid with terminal cancer being given a cupcake
Jeff Sullivan - September 26, 2008
Does the cupcake come with sprinkles?
Matthew - September 26, 2008
Sure, why not
Jeff Sullivan - September 26, 2008
Yes, but the sprinkles contain Potassium Benzoate.
(that’s bad)
Smegmalicious - September 26, 2008
Can I go now?
Mariner John - September 26, 2008
We all have to die someday and funfetti cupcakes are fuckin delicious.
Robert - September 26, 2008
You can turn it into bad news
by pointing out that the Ms might offer him a contract and then have him linger to recover and then spend most of 2009 not pitching.
Matthew - September 26, 2008
Much better.
BrianL - September 26, 2008
So, this is worth asking.
How hard of a kick in the balls is it that noting if Bedard had gotten this done when the MRI came in July that he would be 100% by spring training?
Matthew - September 26, 2008
It's a kick in the balls to be sure
but I don’t think it’s as hard of a kick in the balls as other shit we’ve had to deal with these season.
Really though, Erik was stupid for pitching through the injury, but how much of the blame lies with management and coaching for not getting him looked at earlier?
BrianL - September 26, 2008
I know what Bedard was thinking though.
He knew how many eggs the Mariners and Bavasi had put in his basket.
Mariner Melee - September 26, 2008
Not as hard as believing he had a torn labrum
Gomez - September 26, 2008
100% going into spring training would have been nice to build up his trade value..damnit.
kentroyals5 - September 26, 2008
Why would you trade him before the season?
Aaron Campeau - September 26, 2008
Not that...but have a fresh start to the year to build trade value
Now that he is already coming into next year ‘late’ his value is down.
kentroyals5 - September 26, 2008
If they plan to trade him at all they should non-tender him.
Aaron Campeau - September 26, 2008
One ball ruptured. That's how hard.
Sec 108 - September 26, 2008
This gets back to the age-old question: how competent are the M's medical personnel?
Seriously, this sort of thing seems to happen all the time (eg. Meche’s ‘dead arm’) – pitchers receive MRIs which come back inconclusive or misdiagnosed, they either try to pitch through them or they spend months of futile/inconclusive workouts on the side. Generally, this ends in TJ or labrum surgery. If this case is slightly better, hooray – a Guardado exemption to the standard operating procedure.
The point is, this IS a kick in the balls, and I just want to know how many more times I can expect this happening before someone gets fired.
marc w - September 26, 2008
Have you ever seen an MRI?
They’re incredibly difficult to read, especially when there may be some known issues already going on in there. I know that many, many doctors looked at my knee MRI and thought it was ok, but once they cut it open they found a bunch of crap that just wasn’t visible.
Smegmalicious - September 26, 2008
Washburn
You’re making a huge assumption here that we get a good GM who doesn’t have to listen to Chuckles and who can finally dump Washburn off on someone with that potential rotation.
PascoJoe - September 26, 2008
We've been over this ad infinitum.
Let’s not dredge that topic up here. This thread is for Bedard.
Matthew - September 26, 2008
Dont wanna rain on the parade...
But the Nationals are down 3-0 in the 1st courtesy of Ryan Howard’s 3 run shot.
Slica - September 26, 2008
This thread is for Bedard.
Matthew - September 26, 2008
Sorry sorry sorry!
Slica - September 26, 2008
haha suck it scrappy
Robert - September 26, 2008
Dude you're just gonna' piss him off.
Aaron Campeau - September 26, 2008
You guys are missing the point
We are gonna be able to sign Bedard to a long term contract for cents on the dollar. Medical staff releases rumor Bedard has a torn labrum when he does not. All the teams in MLB freak out. No one will offer him a contract. We score big when Bedard returns healthy for the next 5 years at $10 mil/yr.
Edgar for Pres - September 26, 2008
10 years at $5 million!
Wilder. - September 26, 2008
Baker just updated his post, mentioning that it's six months for a FULL recovery.
ThundaPC - September 26, 2008
No way.
He’s been inactive for so long, it’s going to take a long time to rebuild his arm strength.
Smegmalicious - September 26, 2008
Hot diggity damn.
BrianL - September 26, 2008
That would be an OK rotation. King Felix!/EriK/Morrow!/RRS/Silva...
Won’t lose you 100 games but probably won’t win you 100 either.
Slurvey - September 26, 2008
I am not the most important person around here,
But kudos on improving your comments.
Sec 108 - September 26, 2008
Getting Bedard back before May makes it much easier to compete next year.
JI - September 26, 2008
Let's trade Triunfel and Aumont for Manny Ramirez..we are right on the brink of competing for a championship!!
