Rosenthal drops the bomb:
Free-agent infielder Craig Counsell has reached preliminary agreement with the Brewers on a one-year, $1 million contract, according to a major-league source. The deal is pending a physical.
The Cardinals, after losing third baseman Troy Glaus, did not actively pursue Counsell, sources said. The Mariners did have interest, but Counsell, who lives in Whitefish Bay, Wi., preferred to stay home with the Brewers.
With Counsell and Hairston off the table, among a few others, the remaining FA utility options seem to be limited to guys like Alex Cintron and, I dunno, Ramon Martinez. We'll see if this triggers an urge to swing a trade, or yawn, or both.

We should trade for Rolen and put him at second

Juan Uribe please (assuming no $$ for Orlando Cabrera)
Plays SS and 2B. Should be cheap. wOBA projects around 5 points higher for Uribe than Counsell. Counsell has career UZR/150 numbers of 14.9 at 2B, 20.2 at 3B, and 7.4 at SS. Uribe has put up 10.3 at 2B, -4.2 at 3B, and 2.3 as SS. If they are both playing just 2B/SS, Uribe is about 5 runs worse defensively over a full season.

If our search for the Mark McLemore of this era
turns out to be the last thing we do I’ll be a bit dissapointed. We could really use another regular bat in the line-up.

I think we'll find that bat.
This is the perfect market to wait until the last minute to sign or trade for a guy. (Dunn and Swisher are good examples)

"The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay, if she'd put fifteen more miles behind her...."
