I like the Hardball Times revised zone ratings [RZR] and out of zone plays [OOZ]. I think you can take their statistics and couch them a certain way, and get some really good indicators. --Tony Blengino

I think that with the Hardball Times metrics you can come up with a baseline fairly easily and know what you’re talking about, whether a guy is above or below average at a certain position, and watch trends over the years fairly easily. --TB

We know the new group values defense highly.
We know Yuni rates extremely poorly amongst its preferred metric.
Something's got to give eventually.

For completeness, his UZRs show a poor trend as well.

I wish the Dodgers still needed a shortstop

Well played.

Why do I always read that as Creds?
The Typical Idiot Fan - January 5, 2009
Because there's a big C before the R?
joof - January 5, 2009
Me too. But look at Cincinnati....
You know what? Johnny Cueto is too short to play baseball. Aaron Harang is D-O-N-E. Or, just to be nice, Zach Stewart and Juan Francisco.

When I read Blengino's quote
The first thing I did was go look at Yuni’s RZR and OOZ at THT.
I wish we had an easy alternative in the organization but we just do not have any talent at that position.
Sec 108 - January 5, 2009
You could always sign Orlando Carbrera for two years.
JI - January 5, 2009
He is a 3 Win player.
I’d take him over Yuni any day.
Sec 108 - January 5, 2009
I don't think he's that good
but he’s about 2 wins better than betancourt.
JI - January 5, 2009
LaRue reported today that GMZ has an offer pending on a player right now.
I would love if that offer was to Orlando Cabrera.
BrianL - January 5, 2009
Interesting..
I would think that if it was a more substantial player, it would be among the rumor mills by now. Last time we “had an offer pending” we signed Branyan the next day.. Sounds promising for a Cabrera-type signing.
seattlesundevil - January 5, 2009
Just read the article
Didn’t see it at first.. But then in the comments section, LaRue says it’s not to Dunn or Griffey. One more land mine dodged!
seattlesundevil - January 5, 2009
I would hope they trade Yuni first though
seems might it nuke his value just a big if they sign another SS first
seattlebruin - January 5, 2009
And then sign Orlando Hudson for 2B.
Matthew - January 5, 2009
I'm cautious because UZR doesn't like him.
JI - January 5, 2009
I'd almost rather see if Lopez can break out
JI - January 5, 2009
You're missing the Orlando-Orlando DP combo
joke. I don’t actually care for Hudson (unless he comes cheap)

(sigh)
Matthew - January 5, 2009
(the correct response would be to ridicule me for being LLemminged on to xkcd)
JI - January 5, 2009
xkcd is its own justification.

O-Cab
Being that signing Cabrera would cost us our second first round pick, I’m reluctant. Anyone want to convince me that it’s still worth it?
katal - January 5, 2009
Forgot about that
so no, probably not worth it
JI - January 5, 2009
Same goes for Hudson
I love the idea of one of those guys solidifying our defense, but it isn’t worth the pick to me.
katal - January 5, 2009
Quiet you fool!
JI - January 5, 2009
If the Ms want me to shut up, there's an easy way.
Matthew - January 5, 2009
You're not worth killing.
JI - January 5, 2009
I am sure they could buy him off with various types of high quality beer.
mark sobba - January 5, 2009
That has been poisoned by a variety of things...
Slurvey - January 5, 2009
That Jeff S guy sucks more then Yuni.
Awesome.
joof - January 5, 2009
A potential question
for one of you folks going to this Q&A maybe?
Although in the interest of saving face they may not comment directly on it, but it certainly is worth throwing a, Hey, check our SS’s UZR/OOZ/RZR comment out there
mariners124m - January 5, 2009
I think a question along the lines of
Do you have a plan in place to try to help Betancourt get his defense back to the level it was back in 2005?
is totally appropriate. I don’t know how they’re answering it, but then you’re telling McNamara/Blengino that his D is bad rather then asking if it as bad and then you’re asking whether they intend to fix the problem
Corco - January 5, 2009
Pending offer?
Burrell’s contract makes me even more hopeful that maybe Abreu won’t cost as much as people think he will. If we can get him at about the same rate, we should.
DAMellen - January 5, 2009
I'm against adding a league average DH on a multi year deal
Unless we have second, short, and left sorted out there’s no point in hamstringing our payroll & roster fexiblity.
JI - January 5, 2009
Seconded
once out of the field, he’s not really worth all that much anymore.
Bearskin Rugburn - January 5, 2009
Random shot in the dark at mystery offer
Mark Grudzielanek. Goes with the whole “difficult to spell last name” theme.
JLC - January 5, 2009
If we were closer to contending that MIGHT make sense
but for our team I just don’t see how it really helps.
Edgar for Pres - January 6, 2009
It helps our campaign to hoard rare consonants
for when the vowel bubble collapses. :)
(I forget whom I need to credit for that one.)
