Lookout Landing

So

About eight months ago, Matthew and I were seated among a host of baseball officials and executives at the First Annual PITCHf/x Summit in San Francisco. One of the people sitting at our table was none other than Mat Olkin. He didn't say much, but we noticed that, when asked, he introduced himself as an employee of the Royals.

I think that's about as low as I've ever felt as a Mariners fan. It was at that point I realized that either our team no longer had a sabermatrician on staff, or the sabermatrician they had on staff was so embarrassed by the connection that he'd sooner admit to working with Kansas City. I spent the rest of my weekend consumed with thoughts of how I was devoting myself to a baseball team for whom the clock of intellectual evolution was ticking steadily backwards.

Now it's 2009, and I can't even begin to wrap my head around how different this organization looks. Yeah, ownership is still the same, but it isn't, because Armstrong and Lincoln have elected to defer to a brand new front office that seems to know exactly what it's doing. Zduriencik, Blengino, McNamara, Fusco, Grifol - there's intelligence. There's real-life, legitimate, powerful intelligence at the top, and in just half an offseason the new crew has already made a case for its being one of the strongest front offices in baseball. And now, to top things off, it's been made public that Tom Tango's going to be working as a consultant (along with Olkin, who will have a more appropriate role). Regardless of how much Tango actually goes on to contribute, and how much consideration will be given to his input, the fact that the Seattle Mariners went out and hired probably the greatest publicly accessible statistical analyst in the world speaks immeasurable volumes about how much this team has changed. Bavasi may have wanted to make this organization better, but the bottom line is that Zduriencik and the rest of his front office seem to actually know how to do it.

Tom Tango works for the Mariners. Given everything we've gone through over the past five years, it's absolutely flooring to see how good our organization suddenly looks on paper. And while we can't yet be certain how things will work out in the long run, it's the groups that look the best on paper that have the strongest odds of success, so with that in mind, I am more than prepared to usher in a new era of Mariners baseball. An era of pride, an era of relevance - an era of winning. For the first time in my life, I believe with all my heart that the people in charge of my baseball team are the right people to take it where we all want it to go.

And I can't explain how weird that sounds.

...And thus begins the beginning of the end for Lookout Landing
How much longer before Corco's running this place?
No way he lives long enough.
The Corcalypse is nigh
*Corcapolypse
People can say what they want about you, Corco.

But you’ll never be this guy. (Warning, LSB link)

OK I am not fond of that gentleman

What a tool. If I were in a Texas bar I wouldn’t be screaming GO OHIO STATE when their fans were equally obnoxious- that’s fucking stupid

and Ohio State fans displayed a great amount of class by not kicking the living shit out of him
I've never met that guy or hung out on LSB before

but I’m betting that “incident” never happened. It’s all too perfect.

agreed
He's young and thinks he's a badass.

Although…that seems rather redundant.

So can the mods choose how many recs makes a comment green?

Because there is a green comment with only 3 recs.

Yes
Glad you don't set it at three, or whatever number they use.
We have higher standards.
Disclaimer

When I say “we” I do not include myself as a decision maker.

We have more people reccing
I was going for sarcasm and wrecked it.
I think HH sets it at 1 rec.
Someone should go over there and green an entire FanPost
Don't give me any ideas.

Can mods see who rec’d what?

Not that I'd really do it, but if someone did it would give me momentary pleasure.
Anyone can see if you rec'd something by clicking on your name.
Yeah but if you rec and don't comment, then there's no name on the thread to click.
Actually

During the Teahen-for-Gutierrez rumors we at Let’s Go Tribe spent a lot of time at Royals Review. When we realized one rec turns things green we rec’d every LGTer-generated comment. We’re very good guests that way.

Try having hung around this franchise since 1979 or so

and multiply how weird it sounds to you by about 1000. I still can’t quite wrap my head around what’s going on this winter, but I love it.

Completely, this teams been so consistently bad for so long it's like poverty.

One of those conditions in life people learn to live with instead of a problem that can be solved.

Drat, reply fail to pdb.
I can't believe how much things have changed so quickly

I remember reading back in October how we had interest in Randy Smith and thinking to myself for the first time ever that no matter who was hired, things would never ever change. The concept was so bad that I thought about giving up on baseball for the first time in my life. I don’t understand how this literally went as good as it possibly could.

It's like Felix is starting every day, and hitting a grand slam.
It still hasnt sunk in for me, but im slowly starting to believe
Seattle Mariners 2009: I Want To Believe
There's a classic photoshop lurking in here somewhere for someone with some creativity.
Seattle Mariners 2009: Please Don't Suck

Applies most other years, too…but yet we keep coming back…

Its hard for me to actually buy into things

Its not that I don’t believe things are better now. Its just hard to change when you’ve thought one thing your whole life and now everything seems to be changing. I think it really is going to take a year or two for me to fully comprehend the changes taking place.

Fuckin' Royals

Seriously, does anyone consider us to now have the best front office in the division? In terms of resources, statistical/scouting analysis, and intelligent people running things? I mean, not only have we established a strong stat base, but……good lord…..we also have a strong scouting background as well. And that’s much more difficult to acquire.

And money.

We could be embarking on something wonderful.

We still inhabit the same division as Oakland
Its kind of cool to think that Tango's

Defensive Evaluations from us fans may (in the same breath may very well not) actually get some consideration from the front office.

I like how even the hopefulness of our Fearless Leader is still not enough to shake the Sad Sexson site image.

Not that I am for taking it down; it’s a good reminder of who we are and where we’ve been.

I thought that was Rick White

Is it not?

Rick White never knew rock bottom

the way Sexson knew it.

Did you ever get a further explanation of the Olkin thing?
One of the weirder things about this for me is that I'm actually anxious for us to make another move.

To were before,I dreaded every rumor that mentioned the Mariners.

Same here. It is so crazy to be excited by the FO!

I am just as excited about the FO as I am about seeing the new guys on the team.

All the optimism around here is freaking me out a little.
I'm waiting for the other show to drop.

Lincstrong: “SInce we saw the Rays compete and win the AL with a payroll of 40 million, why are we spending 110 million? Cut payroll.”

I know. Happiness/Joy is hard to understand being an M's fan... and well, being someone that has lived my life.
I'm going to go ahead and give Armstrong and Lincoln some props.

I seriously doubted their ability to make a good hire but they have proven me wrong. If they truly step back and let this group do their thing it will go a long way towards rehabbing their image with the fan base.

Bad process + good outcome = dumb luck
How do you know the process was a bad one?
I'm not giving benefit of the doubt just yet
I am not totally either, but I am opening my mind a bit.

These men may have learned and with all the vitriol I have thrown their way in the past it may be time to give them a pat on the back for once.

We ended up with good collection of GM semi-finalists and a strong collection of GM finalists

Seems like good process to me!

I don't mean this question to sound as it will inevitably come out

but when can we expect results? What I mean is, when will the decisions of this front office begin to bear fruit – not in a “WE WIN THE WORLD SERIES EVERY YEAR THIS IS AWESOME” way, but in an Oakland/Atlanta “sustainable excellence and playoff expectations every year” sort of way? Two years? Three? I just don’t know how long it will take to strip away the effects of the last several years.

I'd guess two years
Depending on how the rest of the offseason plays out

I still think it’s entirely possible the Mariners contend (and I mean actually contend, late into the year) for the division this year.

If Bedard were to return to form...

that would be a dangerous playoff team.

and besides, as Billy Beane said about the playoffs in Moneyball – “It’s all fucking luck”

I mean contend in a "we meant to do that" kind of way
For the moves of this organization to bear fruit?

I’d say about four years?

That’s not my estimate of how long it takes to compete again, but the length of time it takes for moves made by this new org to be the primary motivator for success.

This seems about right.

You have to weed out the dead weight from the old system, begin constructing and implementing the new system, and allow time for development of the players produced from the new system.

Right now it seems GMZ is patching up holes in the sinking ship while throwing dead weight overboard. Within in two years he will have his system in place, and then allow another two years for it to develop and bear fruit.

That sounds reasonable and was sorta what I was thinking

Jeff’s two years would be fantastic, but I’ve been patient this long and I can wait four if it means consistently being a successful organization.

My two years was for a return to legitimate contention

Four years is more realistic for the FO to have its entire system comfortably in place.

Either way it's better than perpetual bumbling

and for that I am grateful.

Thankfully, our weak division will allow us to compete while we rebuild as well!
I should add that I think it's basically four years no matter who.

For a new organization to see it’s new processes/talent become the dominant force on the big league club. There’s just so much lag time with these things.

its
Gotta side with Matthew on this one
oh wait, second it's not first.

I retract my siding.
